On today's show we talk about how to have staying power.  Steven Gaffney is the founder, president, and CEO of the Steven Gaffney Company, a leading specialist in internal communication tactics that help manage and maintain change. He works with top executives and leaders in industry and government, helping organizations like NASA and Citigroup increase morale and productivity to collaborate and succeed in their goals. Steven is the author of six books, including Be a Change Champion: 10 Factors for Sustaining the Boom and Avoiding the Bust of Change. Key Takeaways:Unspoken Communication: Addressing the unsaid is crucial for improving communication and organizational dynamics. By encouraging open dialogue and addressing underlying issues, organizations can foster better understanding and collaboration among team members.Conditionally Powerful vs. Unconditionally Powerful: Being unconditionally powerful means focusing on what can be done to overcome challenges, regardless of existing conditions. It involves taking proactive actions and not letting external factors limit one's capabilities and potential for success.Awareness and Responsibility: Making individuals aware of their conditional mindset empowers them to take 100% responsibility for their actions and reactions. By recognizing the influence, they have over their own lives, individuals can proactively make changes and take control of their outcomes.Controlling the Self: The only thing individuals can truly control is themselves. By focusing on their own behavior and reactions, individuals can positively influence the dynamics around them and contribute to a more positive and productive environment.Quitting vs. Persevering: The decision to quit or persevere is personal, but claiming to have tried everything can limit potential growth. It is important to remain open to new possibilities, solutions, and experiences, even when faced with challenges, in order to continue progressing and achieving goals.Learning from experiences: Analyzing past successes and failures helps identify what works and what doesn't. By drawing lessons from experiences, individuals and organizations can improve their strategies and approaches in the future.Expanding the frame: Considering the bigger picture and ultimate goals when facing challenges allows for the exploration of new possibilities and alternative approaches. By broadening the perspective, individuals can find innovative solutions and make better decisions.Taking action and iterating: High-performing teams prioritize taking action and iterating quickly. They value progress over endless discussions, enabling them to test different approaches, gather feedback, and make adjustments for continuous improvement.Motivation through speed: Taking action and making progress, even if imperfect, creates momentum and a sense of achievement. Speed can inspire and energize individuals and teams, leading to improved quality and market responsiveness through faster feedback loops.Bias for action: Having a bias for action involves prioritizing tangible steps forward over excessive planning or indecision. It encourages a mindset of agility, adaptability, and continuous improvement.Top Three Takeaways:1. Be unconditionally powerful – make the unaware aware. 2. Focus on honest communication. Get that unsaid said. 3.  Create high achieving teams versus high performing teams. How to get in touch with Steven:Email: info@stevengaffney.comWebsite: https://www.stevengaffney.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stevengaffneycompany

ROI’s Into the Corner Office Podcast: Powerhouse Middle Market CEOs Telling it Real—Unexpected Career Conversations

Molly Sargent is Founder & CEO of ProImpress, a dynamic keynote speaker, a master facilitator and author of the forthcoming book, Mastering Authentic Influence™. Since 1985, Molly has successfully trained and coached tens of thousands of Trusted Advisors and teams (and the leaders who love them) to wield greater, positive influence in their client-facing and colleague-collaborating exchanges — face-to-face, voice-to-voice, pen-to-pen. As a business owner and corporate consultant since 1997, Molly's roles have included: sales, sales management, curriculum and course design, meeting facilitation, front-line employee training, leadership training and development, executive development & coaching, strategic consulting, organization change management, and project management. The focus of her training and coaching is on helping Trusted Advisors and Trusted Experts make the most of precious facetime with clients and colleagues, increasing their influence during hard-won sales calls, high-risk presentations and hard-charging collaborative problem-solving sessions. Thanks to her highly discerning clients over several decades, Molly designed – and truth-tested – the no-nonsense training that makes up the ProImpress curriculum. The flagship programs include: Mastering Authentic Influence™ (sell), Presenting Yourself & Your Ideas with Impact™ (present), Dynamic Team Problem-solving™ (teams), Leader as Coach™, Leader as Change Champion™ (coach) and Leader as Culture Carrier™(peer-coach). More recently, as an outgrowth of her Leadership & Transformation Coaching Certification from the Hendricks Institute in Ojai, CA, she began teaching her course participants how to successfully and pragmatically leverage mindfulness practices in everyday business exchanges; for instance, she began demonstrating the power of breath to help ground nervous impulses in negotiations. She playfully refers to this research-supported curriculum as “Spinach in the Cookies,” so named because these “extra skills” are mixed into every core training from ProImpress. Molly earned her Bachelor's degree and a teaching certificate from Penn State University, and spent a year teaching at the Center for English as a Second Language in France. She has earned numerous Certifications and Master Certifications in training and executive coaching. A key specialty is organizational culture transformation—aligning behavior with corporate strategy and realizing better business results. Over the years, she has worked alongside representatives of McKinsey, The Boston Consulting Group and others to translate their recommendations from written reports into measurable behavior change on the job. Molly feels passionately about the work of her company and team: “There's a bigger game at play here. Busy, accomplished professionals don't always want to stop what they're doing to focus on how they're doing it. Yet, I'm convinced that by waking up super-smart professionals to the benefit (and the practice) of being more intentional in their communications, not only will their workplace relationships (and results) improve, their personal connections will deepen, as well.”

Soil. We have a lot of it here in Canada, with the 12th largest agricultural land holding in the world. Our vast land presents a large opportunity to help combat climate change with sequestering carbon, as well as helping farmers' bottom lines. Traditionally, agriculture has been all about yield: the more bushels, the better. But there's a growing push to pay farmers for what they produce and what they preserve.Canada's soil can help grow food for an increasingly hungry world, but is also a powerful tool in the fight against climate change, because it has an incredible ability to store carbon. But it's going to take technology and investment from Canada's farming community to realize this full potential. On this episode of Disruptors, an RBC Podcast, host John Stackhouse explores how soil carbon can help generate The Next Green Revolution. Guests include Mohamad Yaghi, RBC's Climate & Agriculture Policy Lead, Dr. Angela Bedard-Haughn, Dean and Professor, College of Agriculture and Bioresources at the University of Saskatchewan and Marty Seymour, CEO & COO of Regina-based CarbonRX..Check out RBC Thought Leadership's The Next Green Revolution Project hub here. For more information about the University of Saskatchewan's College of Agriculture and Bioresources, click here. You're going to be incredibly blessed by this conversation with Lolita Walker, the author of The Intersection of You & Change. She's a wordsmith and I am so grateful for the coaching that she provided to me on this episode. That's right. You guys are going to hear her directly support me, by speaking words of affirmation over me and teaching you how to do the same.  In addition to that, she shares her stories of the shift from the corporate setting to entrepreneurship - those challenges of what that was like and how she faced it with the triumphs, the process, and the backstory.     About Lolita: Certified Life & Executive Coach, TEDx Speaker, Author, Podcast Host, Retreat Cultivator, and Change Champion for YOU. Lolita E. Walker is the single mom of one, who is at the forefront of a movement that empowers women and teams to embrace their challenges AND triumphs, act in their strengths, and thrive in the greatness that drives individual and group ownership toward a renewed vision of excellence. She helps you to truly feel and trust the power within your pause. After nearly 20 years, Lolita packed her faith, strengths, and experiences, then leaped from her senior position in corporate America. With a strong foundation and her savings account, she founded Walker & Walker Enterprises, a personal and professional coaching and change consultancy. Her company, Walker & Walker Enterprises, creates intentional sacred spaces for individuals, corporations, agencies, and groups. Her book, "The Intersection of You & Change" leads readers through 17 stops of challenging discovery. It shifts your mindset and current thinking of fear to confidence and chaos to clarity. According to one of her long-time clients, "this book is Lolita's signature retreat in print. It is simply POWERFUL!" A natural extension of her portfolio is her podcast, "Coaching, Cocktails, & Conversations," where she meets you where you are and coaches you up to where you need and deserve to be, while having conversations around, what she calls, her virtual kitchen table. How to Pitch a New Idea to Your Nonprofit: Practical advice from successful change champions

Nonprofit Innovators

Let's face it - a different set of rules governs nonprofits than our corporate peers who are celebrated when they embrace an idea only to “fail faster”. ‍Fail faster? Not an option. Suggest something new? Pitch a new approach? Stop doing something we've always done?Ask why we've always done it that way? Those are dollars earmarked for the mission you're talking about. There's nothing cavalier about it. Our mission is depending on us to do what we've always done. To raise what we always raise (or more), the way we've always done it. If the way we've always done it has delivered predictable results, why would we jeopardize our fundraising goals?Sound familiar? In an industry lauded for doing more with less, and often penalized for investing in ourselves, suggesting something new, questioning why or offering a new way is intimidating.  Yet, some of our peers do it and do it well. I bet you know at least one successful Change Champion. Heck, I've been one. How do they do it? How did I do it? I've been asked this question numerous times since joining GoodUnited so we're devoting an episode to this topic.Let's ask: How do successful change agents introduce, pilot, and advocate new ideas within their organization? Whether it requires Board buy-in or colleagues to cooperate with budgets, teams or time, how can we introduce new ideas so our often change-adverse colleagues can hear us?Let's dig in to unpack how to think differently about championing change, and uncover techniques that make change agents successful. I'll hop in the time machine and answer these questions myself. [And yes, it cost me something. I'll talk about that too.]

In this episode, I talk with Lolita E. Walker about the power of sitting in your pause and how it “will revolutionize your mindset to action.” Lolita shares about her experience of transitioning into motherhood and bringing her infant son home after spending 52 days in the NICU. We dive deep into the importance of setting boundaries, communicating our expectations, starting our day with intentionality and the responsibility we have in shaping our children’s positive mindset.   Lolita shares how she takes moments each morning to “create my space and [my son and I] communicate about it so that the expectations are set and he is a respecter of my space, similar to me to his space.  Affirmations make up a big part of my DNA and I stand upon a strong foundation of faith.  These bring intentional movements into my morning before we start the Walker & Walker routine.” Lolita is a small business owner, a published author, podcaster, and speaker but at the end of the day she’s a Change Champion. She wants to help you navigate where you are to where you absolutely DESERVE to be! Rhonda Watson is a detail oriented, well organized professional with experience in non-profit, multi-family real estate, and family medical practice fields and a proven track record of developing and implementing process improvements. She is a partnered (for 23 years) mother of one daughter, two dogs, and five cats. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Texas at Tyler with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology where she was elected to serve as President of Psi Chi and the Association of Psychology Students her senior year. She was also named Outstanding Undergraduate Psychology Student by faculty and peers. The impact of Rhonda’s personal encounter with Stage III ovarian cancer resonates years after her diagnosis and has reignited her determination to make a meaningful difference in the world, especially where her young daughter is concerned. It has become her life’s work to ensure that her daughter is not only exposed to a diverse array of wildlife and experiences but also to make volunteerism and activism a way of life. Rhonda believes that by doing so she will achieve her greatest mission in life – to make the world a better place for not only her daughter but also for future generations. Currently, Rhonda serves the local community in a volunteer role as President of PFLAG Woodstock. Though she was laid off in May 2020 due to the COVID epidemic, she remains active and busy even as she seeks employment. Her most recent employer was the American Cancer Society*. Her commitment to this organization was reflected in her volunteer activity. From 2009 to 2019, Rhonda served a variety of voluntary committee roles: Luminaria Chair, Volunteer Chair, Logistics Chair and day of volunteer for the DeKalb/Adams Relay For Life** Committee. In this capacity, she has worked with over 2,000 volunteers, many cancer survivors and their caregivers, and others who have been impacted by cancer in some way. She has served the American Cancer Society as a Change Champion for an enterprise-wide organizational transformation, a Welcome Ambassador for new employees, and as a Co-Lead for the LGBTQ+Allies Employee Engagement Group. In addition to her Relay For Life volunteer activities, Rhonda has also volunteered numerous hours at the Save the Horses horse rescue located in Cumming, Georgia. It was through the course of this volunteer work Rhonda began to comprehend the magnitude of the giant that she faced and how profoundly her life has changed as a result of a journey she never intended to take. It is this passion and commitment that Rhonda brings to her role as President of PFLAG Woodstock. *The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service. **Relay For Life is a community-based event sponsored by the American Cancer Society to raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer, to honor cancer survivors, and to remember those who we have lost.

Today we share Sam Smith’s story.  Sam came to our first Charlotte Angel Connection event last February (where we first met) and has been back to each one since. She has a thirst to be part of and leading the Charlotte entrepreneurial scene.  It’s led her to start Vishion, Collective Hustle and put on the 1st Seed the South event in January 2019.  All three are great getting great traction and we're excited to see them grow and the impact they will have on Charlotte! Vishion is her startup. It’s the only mobile app that uses a product’s true color data, fashion trend and user preferences to help shoppers find the ideal color. The concept came to her after her own frustrating experience after falling in love with the blackspash in the bar at Kindred on a date night with her husband. Sam’s the type of person who once she latched onto her idea, she just never let go. Collective Hustle is a Charlotte investor and startup coalition looking to improve the Queen City’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.  She started it last year with Aru from botSplash.  They host invitation only events with a focus on inclusion and ways to assist female and minority entrepreneurs in Charlotte. Seed the South was last month. It took a huge effort from Sam and her team to get it off the ground and served as Charlotte’s first non-Fintech Demo Day. Check out our podcast with Sam today to hear more about how the last couple of years have shaped who she is.  It’s a great podcast as we sat down and had a couple of Triple C beers one Friday afternoon. Local Note and Thoughts: Stay tuned for Emir and James – co-founders of Rabbu – on the podcast next week.  Rabbu recently wrapped up a $1.5 million funding round and they are ready for the next stage of growth.  Listen in next week to learn how they got here and where they plan to go. Finsiders had their annual awards earlier this week.  Sam Smith won the Dan Roselli Community Organizer award.  Derek Wang, CEO and Founder of Stratifyd won for Best Innovation. Tim Griffin, CEO and Founder of Cloosiv, won for Risk Taker/Fail Fast.  Mark Mahoney, CEO and Founder of Jack Rabbit Technologies won the 2019 Change Champion.  Congrats to all the winners. The Charlotte Angel Connection next quarterly event is in the works – though the date may be changing to accommodate the company. John Cambier and Lister Delgado from IDEA Fund Partners will be in Charlotte to do an on-stage Partner Pitch (the pitch will be from 6:30 to 7:30pm) – which means they are going to go into detail with an entrepreneur about their company as though they are interested in investing – and they may even be.  I hope to have the company named by the podcast for next week.  Stay tune and come see a professional team in due diligence. Also SeedSpark – a technology and digital solutions company – is going to sponsor our first ever Entrepreneur Date Night Award.  We will have the startups in attendance (demo tables) vote on the entrepreneur they think is most worthy of a $100 gift certificate to a Charlotte area restaurant. It’s a small token to the countless spousal/significant dinners founders must give up as they bring their projects to life. QC Fintech is also in the process of interviewing for their spring class and after speaking with Dan recently they are seeing some really good companies.  Be on the lookout for announcements for the spring class and the opportunities you will have to meet them and ultimately support them as they come to Charlotte for 12 weeks to incubate their ideas and companies.       William Bissett is an Investment Advisor Representative with Secrest Blakey & Associates, a Registered Investment Adviser.  Opinions expressed on this program do not necessarily reflect those of Secrest Blakey & Associates.
