Mein persönliches Highlight nebst A Line von Kai Schumacher selbst, ist ThePleasure at being the cause des 1984 geborenen Christopher Cerrone. (mg)

In the first of two special episodes with esteemed and newly decorated composers, we sit down with Gavin Bryars, a composer who has led the way in innovation over a long and distinguished career. On Tuesday 12th November he received the Innovation Award in association with the Musicians Union at the Ivors Composers Awards, and we were lucky to get a chance to talk to him about this just a few days before. We discuss his early days of art college, double bass and free jazz, his early iconic pieces The Sinking Of The Titanic and Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet and his creative relationship with Brian Eno. Over his career he has written five operas, twenty ballets and a long list of instrumental, orchestral and vocal works. He has collaborated with many non-classical musicians over the years, including Tom Waits, Father John Misty, Charlie Haden, Bill Frisell, Natalie Merchant, Iarla O'Lionaird, Gavin Friday, Bertrand Belin and Mocke, and with many visual artists such as Bruce McLean, David Ward, Tim Head, James Hugonin, Bill Woodrow, Will Alsop, the Quay brothers, Juan Muñoz and Massimo Bartolini. He divides his time between a Leicestershire village and Vancouver Island, and we discuss his approach to writing in various locations, and in particular the importance of just the right pencil for the job. There really is a lot of time spent talking about this particular pencil.Gavin talks about the formative time he had working as the house bassist as Greasbrough Working Men's Club, performing in the backing band for Bob Monkhouse, Dusty Springfield and many others. The documentary he mentions is available to watch here: MEMORIES OF GREASBROUGH WORKING MEN'S CLUBFor more on Gavin Bryars, visit www.gavinbryars.comFor more on the Ivors Classical Awards 2024 visit https://ivorsacademy.com/awards/the-ivors-classical-awards/Big thanks to Premier for setting up the interview. You can find us on the socials here;Instagram @threeinabarpodTiktok @threeinabarpodThree In A Bar on YoutubeAnything you'd like to share with us? Working across and among languages, media, and art forms, Caroline Bergvall's writing takes form as published poetic works and performance, frequently of sound-driven projects. Her interests include multilingual poetics, queer feminist politics and issues of cultural belonging, commissioned and shown by such institutions as MoMA, the Tate Modern, and the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Antwerp, and won numerous awards. Ragadawn is a multimedia performance that explores ideas of multi-lingualism, migration, lost or disappearing languages, and how language and place intersect. Ragadawn is performed with two live voices and recorded elements, outdoors, at dawn, which means the start and end times are location specific. It features song composed by Gavin Bryars, sung by Peyee Chen. Ragadawn premiered at the Festival de la Bâtie (Geneva) and at the Estuary Festival (Southend) in 2016. "The original recording has two distinct sections; the first features a violinist practicing whilst the second has more emphasis on people walking and talking. "I took a short section of the violin from the first part and slowed it down a little. I repeated this phrase whilst adding in other instruments as it repeats. The second half of the original recording is played over the music at roughly the half way point of the piece. In the same way that the instruments are introduced they fade slowly (at different speeds) through the second part of the piece leaving the solo violinist to continue their practice alone at the end. Because of the way the process works no two repeats are identical. "The title is a reference to Gavin Bryars (whom I studied composition with) both in the way that this piece shares a similar process with "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet" and to an early piece of his called "My First Homage"." Ponte Raspi, Venice reimagined by Simon Belshaw.
“We are there to be servants of our community. A lot of amateur choirs can become bowling leagues; they show up on Wednesday night, they have a great time, and that's the reason they do it. I think the trick is to satisfy the needs of our singers, develop them as artists and people, but also make the focus constantly about reaching out to our audience: how do I find pieces that are going to meet my singers where they are, challenge them pedagogically, and bring people to my concert and make it impactful?”Erick Lichte enjoys a diverse career as a conductor, composer, and record producer. As a founding member, singer, and Artistic Director of the male vocal ensemble Cantus, Lichte created and sustained one of only two full-time vocal ensembles in the United States. From 2000-2009, Lichte's programming and artistic direction were heard in over 60 concerts a year and he has collaborated with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, the Boston Pops, and Minnesota Orchestra. In January 2013, he began his tenure as Artistic Director of Vancouver, Canada's Chor Leoni Men's Choir. Since that time, he has grown the choir into one of the most active and popular amateur choirs in North America, performing over 35 concerts a year. His first recording with Chor Leoni, Wandering Heart, received a perfect five-star review from the UK's prestigious Choir and Organ Magazine. In the summer of 2018, he led Chor Leoni to multiple awards and Grand Prix appearances at both the Singapore and Bali International Choral Competitions. In 2020, his world premiere recording of When There Is Peace: an Armistice Oratorio was nominated for a JUNO Award. His work with Cantus and Chor Leoni garnered him both the 2009 and 2019 Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence, the highest honour from the professional choral organization Chorus America. He is only the second conductor to have ever won this award with two ensembles.Lichte is an active proponent of new music and has commissioned over 300 new works from composers such as Lee Hoiby, Eriks Esenvalds, Gavin Bryars, Jocelyn Morlock, Steven Sametz, Edie Hill, Mary Ellen Childs, and Zachary Wadsworth among many others. As a record producer, Lichte has made over 30 albums. His recent release for Naxos of the choral music of Eriks Esenvalds spent multiple weeks as the number one classical album on the Billboard charts. He is also an active composer and arranger, especially known for co-creating All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 which has toured North America annually and been performed on three continents. The work's 2018 off-Broadway run in Greenwich Village garnered Lichte a Drama Desk Award for both his composing and his musical direction. In November 2020, a filmed version of this production will air across the United States distributed through PBS.To get in touch with Erick, you can reach out on Instagram (@ericklichte) or on Facebook (@erick.lichte).

Welcome to another conversation from the high/low art divide between opera-singer-turned-experimental-performer Ema Katrovas and comedian-and-TV-writer-turned-novelist Nicholas Anthony. For this end-of-the-year episode, Nick and Ema decided to talk about The Beatles and their influence on a few pieces of “high art”: new journalist Joan Didion's essay “The White Album” and avant garde singer Cathy Berberian's covers of Beatles' songs. They also briefly talk about American composer Ned Rorem's essay “The Music of the Beatles”. Their starting point is a 2021 documentary by Peter Jackson, Get Back. Nick and Ema circle around the question: Were the Beatles exceptional, lucky, or both? Does one need opportunity or even fame to create one's best work? Is trying to tell a story about the Beatles, or any other iconic artist, that answers these questions even useful? Greetings! Well...in October I was back in Connecticut for my 50th high school reunion and on the way back I had to make my quarterly pilgrimage to the Princeton Record Exchange and load up, thus the title of today's program, an inquiry from my wife. I was thrilled to find a bunch of CDs released on Foster Reed's wonderful New Albion label. I've never been a completist about any label or artist, but I've been making a concerted effort to obtain the New Albion catalog due to their consistent high quality in terms of performances, composers and recording quality. While no longer producing new releases, they are available for digital download. Do check their catalog out. http://www.newalbion.com Enjoy! Gimusi Plovdive, dar vaikystėje atsidūrusi Londone, Dobrinka Tabakova (g. 1980) netruko pagarsėti kaip vunderkindas, tačiau nuo pat pradžių jautė antipatiją avangardo pasauliui. Jos žvilgsnis nukrypo į praeitį, į klasikinio meno epochas. Autoritetais laikydama Johną Adamsą, Keithą Jarrettą, Sofiją Gubaiduliną, Alfredą Schnittkę ir Gaviną Bryarsą, Tabakova teigia kurianti „muziką, kuri tave patraukia ir turi ką pasakyti“. Dabar ji vis labiau įsigali didžiausiose Vakarų pasaulio koncertų salėse.Laidos autoriai Šarūnas Nakas ir Mindaugas Urbaitis

Maren Montalbano began her vocal career with the San Francisco Girls Chorus at age seven, and has been singing ever since. A graduate of both New England Conservatory of Music and Tufts University, Ms. Montalbano can be heard in three GRAMMY Award-winning albums: John Adams' Pulitzer Prize-winning work, On the Transmigration of Souls (2005), and Gavin Bryars' The Fifth Century (2018), and Lansing McLoskey's Zealot Canticles (2019), on which she is a featured soloist. She recorded Douglas Cuomo's opera Arjuna's Dilemma with Anonymous 4 members Susan Hellauer and Jacqueline Horner, which was released in 2008 to critical acclaim. She appears on over a dozen commercial recordings, including Alice Parker's Listen Lord and The Family Reunion, Kile Smith's Vespers, Lewis Spratlan's Hesperus is Phosphorus, and Ted Hearne's Sound from the Bench. In the past five years, Ms. Montalbano has been a guest artist with Lyric Fest, Choral Arts Philadelphia, Network for New Music and Piffaro, the Renaissance Band. When she performed the modern premiere of Destinos vencen finezas, a 17th century zarzuela by Juan Francisco de Navas, with Philadelphia's Baroque orchestra, Tempesta di Mare, her dramatic interpretation was hailed as “pure, suave and sensuous” (Philadelphia Inquirer, March 2015). When she premiered the role of Andy Warhol #2 in Andy: a POPera (Bearded Ladies Cabaret and Opera Philadelphia), the Broad Street Review called her singing “impeccable.” Her debut album, Sea Tangle: Songs from the North, featuring all women composers and performers, was released in December 2016. During the pandemic of 2020-21, Ms. Montalbano turned to the digital world. She wrote, produced, and starred in an interactive digital one-woman show called The Bodice Ripper Project, which had its world premiere at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and she started a podcast of the same name. Other pandemic world premiere projects include David Lang's in nature (The Crossing/Warren Miller Performing Arts Center), Pete Wyer's Spring Street Opera (American Opera Projects), and the release of six different commercial albums with various collaborators. The 2021-22 season features Ms. Montalbano in more world premieres, both live and digital, from a podcast musical by Jennifer Rosenfeld to a work by Lansing McLoskey honoring the 100th anniversary of James Joyce's Ulysses. Ms. Montalbano lives in New Jersey and sings professionally throughout a wide geographic area with such groups as Opera Company of Philadelphia, Trio Eos, and The Crossing. She is passionate about keeping artists employed doing what they do best. Ms. Montalbano currently studies voice with Julianne Baird.

Gavin Bryars is one of the leading experimental composers of his generation. Among his diverse and prodigious repertoire, his best known work remains the process composition Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet, a stirring work of cumulative power. We talk about this and all his work, and whether the word “spiritual” may be applicable.

THE ART OF TIME ENSEMBLE MISSION: To engage diverse audiences in powerful arts experiences through the performances, collaborative endeavours, and curatorial vision of its Artistic Director. ABOUT ART OF TIME Andrew Burashko formed Art of Time Ensemble in 1998 with the support of a small group of like-minded musicians and prominent figures in dance, theatre and other art forms, beginning with one-off concerts to small but enthusiastic audiences. Today, Art of Time works with the best Canadian artists in the performing arts, film and literature, and noteworthy international musicians such as Branford Marsalis, Madeleine Peyroux, Gavin Bryars and Guinga to name but a few. The Ensemble has also toured extensively throughout Canada and the United States and is regularly invited to performs at major festivals such as Luminato in Toronto, Chamberfest in Ottawa and at the Banff Centre for the Arts. At 2:20 a.m. on this date in 1912, the luxury liner S.S. Titanic sank after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic. Of the 2201 people of on board, only 711 reached their intended destination in New York. Eight British musicians, members of the ship’s band stayed on board, reportedly playing a hymn-tune as the ship went down. In 1969, British composer Gavin Bryars, prepared a multi-media musical work titled “The Sinking of the Titanic,” which incorporated spoken interviews by Titanic survivors with a set of variations on the hymn tune played by the ship’s band. In 1985, the sunken wreck of the Titanic was rediscovered, and renewed interest led to a 1990 revival performance and recording of Gavin Bryars’s score. A few years later, composer James Horner wrote an Oscar-winning film score for director James Cameron’s Titanic–an incredibly successful cinematic dramatization of the story. Horner has written other famous film scores like those for “Aliens” and “Braveheart”—but none quite as successful as “Titanic.” That film grossed more than $600 million at the domestic box office and more than $1.8 billion worldwide. Ironically, considering this “titanic” success, the first film for which Horner composed a score was entitled “The Drought.”
Music Mondays featuring The Crossing and Artistic Director and Conductor Donald Nally. "At Piece," the last movement from "A Native Hill" (music by Gavin Bryars and words by Wendell Berry) was composed as a gift for The Crossing, dedicated to Cassia Bryars-Rockey, and in memoriam Julian Rockey. It was recorded on October 8-11, 2019 at St. Peter's Church in the Great Valley, Malvern, PA and included in A Native Hill by Navona Records.
The long-anticipated follow-up to Gavin Bryars’ The Fifth Century, which won The Crossing its first GRAMMY award in 2018, the 12-movement A Native Hill was premiered by the ensemble in October 2019 at their home, The Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia. Wendell Berry’s text, from his 1968 essay of the same title, offers meditations on how life is, and can be, experienced, through detailed descriptions of the minutiae of rural existence, where simple natural events reveal themselves as metaphors for universal truths. Bryars has a close working and personal relationship with The Crossing, and draws on his intimate knowledge of the singers’ individual characteristics to create a further thoughtful and even more profoundly meaningful work for the ensemble. The New York Times has called Bryars’ music “accessible and defiantly personal,” and A Native Hill exemplifies his organic synthesis of sophisticated musical ideas with an earthy, insightful understanding of daily life. Poet Laureate Simon Armitage and composer Gavin Bryars in expansive conversation about their respective art forms, and what happens when they are brought together. Chaired by Dr Kimberly Campanello, Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Leeds, it’s a wide-ranging and warm conversation, illuminated by good humour and the two artists’ evident delight in discovering each other’s work in more detail. They discuss the pleasures and perils of crossing between the two disciplines, with reference to specific works by themselves and others. Excerpts from their recordings are woven throughout, including tracks by Armitage’s post rock/ambient outfit LYR, and Bryars’ extraordinary, influential 1971 work Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet.
In The Lark Ascending (Faber) Richard King, author of Original Rockers and How Soon is Now?, explores how Britain's history and identity have been shaped by the mysterious relationship between music and nature. From the far west of Wales to the Thames Estuary and the Suffolk shoreline, taking in Brian Eno, Kate Bush, Boards of Canada, Dylan Thomas, Gavin Bryars, Greenham Common and the Kinder Scout Mass Trespass, The Lark Ascending listens to the land and the music that emerged from it, to chart a new and surprising course through a familiar landscape. King was in conversation with Luke Turner, editor of the influential online music publication The Quietus and author of the memoir Out of the Woods.
