We are kicking off April with what is top of mind for everyone – how AI (artificial intelligence) is affecting and changing aging and caregiving. We have two experts in this area: Lawrence Kosick, Co-Founder of Get Set Up and Dor Skuler, Founder and CEO of Intuition Robotics, makers of ElliQ. They talk about how they are using AI to help both older adults and caregivers make managing health easier and more personalized. In our Caregiver Wellness News, we focus on April as National Stress Awareness Month and Sherri shares the latest on the Tik Tok trend, “cortisol face” and what caregivers should know. Sherri also talks about a new way to measure cortisol and stress in the workplace using saliva being tested with Cleveland Clinic employees. And new insights from a recent report from United Church Homes and MIT AgeLab on how caregivers feel about AI and managing care for their older loved one. For our Well Home Design News, we put the spotlight on April's National Parkinson's Awareness Month and the research that is identifying “parkinson's clusters” – geographic areas with extremely high prevalence for Parkinsons's disease – Sherri talks about what you should know about environmental factors and other risks as well as the signs of Parkinson's – some of which may surprise you. Also, Sherri shares a new report from the National Alliance for Caregiving and the Michel J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research – the first-ever study of caregivers of those with Parkinson's disease. One solution for these Parkinson's caregivers and all caregivers is a training platform from Trualta that helps caregivers up-skilll and learn techniques that help them on their caregiving journey. They share results of more than 3 million minutes caregivers have spent on their platform and what they are saying. Tuesday, April 1 - Host Doug Stephan and Dr. Ken Kronhaus of Lake Cardiology (352-735-1400) cover a number of topics affecting our health. First up, Doug and Dr. Ken start with some good news from the world of medicine with a breakthrough in Parkinson's research of a brain stimulator giving new hope for patients as it's set to be made available at hospitals throughout the country as a new era begins in treating this illness. Continuing with good news, the FDA has approved a new treatment for Crohn's disease, and update on what RFK Jr. is doing in banning ingredients that are bad for us yet continued to be in our foods, and discussing how a person should eat in middle age to protect their health as they grow older with the clear winner (out of a 30-year study) being The Harvard Diet — also known as the Healthy Eating Plate or Alternative Healthy Eating Index, is a dietary pattern based on research from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health emphasizing the consumption of nutrient-rich foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, and healthy fats) while limiting unhealthy ones (red and processed meats, sugary drinks, sodium, and refined grains). Plus, Doug and Dr. Ken discuss advice on managing tinnitus with dietary changes, Oprah's special on menopause, Dr. Ken's recommendation on plant-based foods to reduce hot flashes, dealing with COVID-19 in a post pandemic world, pros and cons of taking Apple Cider Vinegar to lower blood sugar, the connection between tattoos and bladder cancer, and the debate of heat vs ice in pain management. Welcome to an episode where we explore the cutting-edge world of photobiomodulation (PBM) and its potential to transform the landscape of neurodegenerative disease treatment. This episode features an in-depth interview with Liam Pingree, CEO of Neuronic, we dive into the science behind PBM and the innovative Neuradiant 1070 device. Building on our discussion from last year, we'll uncover how this non-invasive therapy leverages red and near-infrared light to enhance brain health, with a focus on conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Photobiomodulation, often called low-level laser or red light therapy, is gaining traction as a promising approach to tackle the mitochondrial dysfunction and inflammation that drive neurodegenerative diseases. Today, we'll hear from Liam about how the Neuradiant 1070, with its unique 1070 nm wavelength, aims to penetrate deeper into the brain, offering hope for symptom relief and possibly slowing disease progression. We'll also spotlight the contributions of key researchers, including Professor Paul Chazot, whose work on neuroinflammation ties into this field, alongside pioneers like Michael R. Hamblin driving PBM research forward. Join us as we break down the device's features, clinical applications, and real-world user experiences, all while peering into the future of PBM as a potential standard in brain health care. Whether you're a science enthusiast, a caregiver, or someone curious about innovative therapies, this episode offers a compelling look at how light might just shine a new path forward for neurodegenerative challenges. Let's dive in! What You'll Learn in This Episode: The Science of Photobiomodulation (PBM): Understand how PBM uses red and near-infrared light to boost mitochondrial function, reduce inflammation, and promote neurogenesis, with insights into its relevance for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Hey everybody! Episode 150 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with Martha Carlin. Martha has a fascinating story. After her husband was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, she quit her job and dedicated her life to better understanding the root of the disease. She began to discover that the Western medical system didn't have a lot of answers and in her research she discovered the importance of the gut microbiome, both in Parkinsons and chronic diseases at large. It was a pleasure to speak with Martha and have her share in her decades of work and knowledge. We spoke about disease, the gut microbiome, the deleterious consequences of many Western lifestyle practices, holistic approaches to healing, the mind-body connection, and many other topics. I think Martha is a true scientist in the real meaning of that word and her insights and wisdom should be valuable to anyone interested in health and the human condition. Philanthropy and rare disease are the topics in this week's show, after a global news review with Sasha Kehoe. Philanthropy for Brain Research and Rare Disease What would you do if you had a spare €10,000 or more to donate? Well, the University of Luxembourg has just opened up a new fund to tackle Alzheimers, Parkinsons, and Rare Diseases. You could become part of their ‘Champions Circle' and get to know the researchers, the cutting edge development and help shape the future for so many people in the world with these conditions. Research is expensive and philanthropy can be targeted giving, where you get to make a difference during your lifetime. Naturally another way to give is to leave a legacy through your will. As an entirely separate aside, it is always a good idea to leave a written will. The act of writing one can crystallise what matters most to you once you're gone, and therefore perhaps what matters most to you whilst you live. Philippe Lamesch created and leads the Fundraising Office at the University of Luxembourg. His own background is in biological sciences, firstly at Namur in Belgium, followed by research at the and then the Carnegie Institution for Science at Stanford University. https://www.uni.lu/en/about/fundraising/how-to-donate/ Daniela Ragni, Director of the André Losch Foundation, talks about his legacy. Given that he didn't have his own children, he created the foundation with a mission is to support youth, education and social inclusion. They work in partnerships with people and organisations over a number of years to make real and lasting changes within our community. Daniela herself spent a couple of decades working for non-governmental organisations trying to raise money and now finds herself on the other side of the this equation, developing relationships with organisations and individuals who need financing for their ideas for the social good of the community, always with a focus on young people. https://www.loschfondation.lu Rare Disease Associate Professor Dr. Carole Linster's scientific work has made her the leading researcher on rare childhood disease in Luxembourg. Her biomedical science studies started in UC Louvain in Brussels, followed by the prestigious de Duve Institute there, followed by UCLA in California. Here she discovered enzymes that plants depend on to produce vitamin C. Carole and co-workers also discovered several new enzymes of human metabolism, involved in the breakdown of metabolic side products that become toxic when left to accumulate. In collaboration with researchers from Australia, the US, and the UK, the Linster group identified a novel infantile rare neurodegenerative disorder that is caused by the deficiency of one of those metabolite repair enzymes (NAXD). Carole talks about the fundamental global research that is necessary in order to tackle rare disease, which is not really that rare by definition. It is extremely time consuming for talented scientists to write proposals for grants and other fund opportunities. For this reason again, the idea of university led funds, or partnerships with organisations such as André Losch which can extend over years, takes some pressure off the constant need to ‘ask' for money. Sip of Self-Care Dr. Laura Riordan flew over from Lisbon to join our conversation. She is an Executive and Career Transitions Coach with a Ph.D. in psychology and over 20 years of coaching experience. Through her work of creating the Sustainable Mom methodology, Laura has extended her knowledge to the world of Raregivers - caregivers within families of Rare Disease. From 2019, Laura has developed retreats for rare caregivers to find relief in a supportive community and bolster their self-care practices to sustain themselves and their families at home. Laura talks about the need to look after one's own well-being in order to support a child with a chronic condition. We talk about the diagnosis odyssey, on average 5-8 years with a rare disease. This limbo in itself is a source of immense pain and stress for a family, layering on top financial stressors when often one parent has to give up work to care for a child. The Raregiver's guide trains caregivers and medical professionals on the Raregiver's methodology, a research-based stress relief methodology shared through peer-to-peer support groups and emotional witnessing workshops. The Raregivers organization is singularly focused on providing necessary mental health and wellness services to raregivers - from sustainable psychosocial training and transformative retreats to a connective peer-to-peer multilingual network. Raregivers currently supports over 22,000 rare families across 33 countries. https://www.raregivers.global Get in touch You can contact Lisa on her website or through LinkedIN. The Parkinson's Foundation makes life better for people with Parkinson's disease (PD) by improving care and advancing research toward a cure. The Foundation recognizes the importance of funding and supporting research studies dedicated to better understanding the causes of PD, developing more effective treatments, and ultimately finding a cure. The Foundation awards research grants to support investigators working on diverse research projects, along with collaborating with other institutions to advance PD research. One of its major initiatives is exploring the genes and other factors associated with the development of PD through a global project, PD GENEration: Mapping the Future of Parkinson's Disease. By gathering genetic information from tens of thousands of people with PD, this study offers genetic testing for relevant disease-related genes and genetic counseling to help participants understand their results, all at no cost to them. At the same time, knowledge gathered through PD GENEration will promote more focused, gene-specific clinical trials of drugs and may lead to novel therapy options for people with PD. In this episode, we explore the origins of PD GENEration, its growth over the years, and its goals with Dr. James Beck, Chief Scientific Officer of the Parkinson's Foundation. Douglas Katz is a West Point graduate, a disabled Army veteran, and a culinary enthusiast. The problem for Doug was that, like millions of those who suffer from limited mobility, he struggled to use kitchen utensils that require upper extremity strength. Aided by friends and other veterans, Doug took to his workshop to invent a new type of kitchen knife — the NULU knife — the first product in a series of “adaptive” gear he plans to introduce. Ergonomically made, the NULU blade is located beneath the handle, allowing users' shoulders, arms, and hands to remain neutral, reducing stress on their joints. NULU delivers a better cutting experience and makes cooking accessible for everyone. Doug is utilizing Kickstarter to crowdfund the NULU knife. If you'd like to see the NULU knife in action, visit the product's Kickstarter page at tinyurl.com/MMR-Knife. There are less than two weeks before Doug's Kickstarter campaign closes, so if you're looking for a great holiday gift for family and friends — or for yourself — the time to act is now. Doug's story is an inspiring example of how innovation, perseverance, and purpose can drive entrepreneurial success. By addressing real-world problems, building a solid team, and staying committed to a greater purpose, Doug exemplifies the potential of entrepreneurship to change lives — not just for customers but for communities as well. Mind bending podcast!!! Brain scans that prove Jennifer is IN ANOTHER ZONE!!! Jennifer was invited by a lab up in Marin County to do some EEGs of her brain, based upon the fact that she'd had a number of events, broken bones over the years. She went up to a brain scan lab in Marin where they mapped her brain - doing a baseline scan while she was "not thinking of anything" - and then while doing a session with someone in the office, but looking straight ahead. The results are dramatic and mind bending. The results show that when Jennifer is "doing a session" (in trance, or as I call it "bypassing the filters on the brain") she's in full DELTA state - the equivalent of being in a deep sleep, or as shown in the scans of monks who are in a trance or doing meditation. From an AI definition of the Theta vs. Delta state: There are various levels of awareness and sleep as recorded by science - theta state, delta state, etc. Theta and delta waves are both types of brain waves that occur during sleep, but they have different frequencies and are associated with different stages of sleep: Theta waves These waves are associated with the initial stages of non-REM sleep, and are characterized by a frequency of 3–8 Hz and an amplitude of 50–100 µV. Theta waves are associated with deep relaxation, creativity, intuition, and visualization. Delta waves These waves are associated with deep, slow-wave sleep, and are characterized by a frequency of 0.5–3 or 4 Hz and an amplitude of 100–200 µV. Delta waves are associated with physical healing and regeneration, reduced stress and anxiety, and dreamless sleep. Electroencephalography (EEG) is the primary tool used to measure brainwaves during sleep." It's as if Jennifer is "sound asleep" while we're doing these sessions, while she's working with law enforcement, while working with her clients. Her brain is "In another dimension" so to speak - not the awake mind that we associate with daily living. Also worth noting; as the video of a Parkinson's patient (on this page - Coleman Hough) during hypnosis showed, during the hypnosis session she lost her symptoms; she stopped shaking and spoke normally. (As if she was asleep, while consciously speaking.) As noted, people with brain issues (Parkinsons, Tourette's) don't shake or have tics while they're sleeping. It's only in the Theta state that the shaking returns (as evidenced in the session with Coleman, all the shaking returned when she was "counted down." In the research from Dr. Greyson ("AFTER") he talks about filters on the brain, that "block information not conducive to survival." Dr. Wambach talks about the same filters in her book "Reliving Past Lives." The point is - if people can use meditation (and Coleman told us from the flipside that both meditation and hyperbaric oxygen therapy can help) to bypass the filters, why not use that as a tool for healing? It's uncanny that Jennifer has these scans, and as noted in the podcast, a scientist at the University of Pennsylvania is doing EEG/MRI scans of mediums. (Dr. Beauregard's BRAIN WARS has some MRI data in his research.) Luana Anders is our moderator on the flipside, LuanaAnders.com - passed in 1996, was pals with Tina Turner, both SGI Buddhists. So Tina stops by to say hello. (And Jennifer has had a client who has spoken with Tina as well.) So HAPPY THANKSGIVING. Each week Jennifer and I have no idea what we're going to talk about, and each week we go further and farther into the flipside to learn new information. Stay tuned! And don't forget to give thanks for being allowed to return to the planet to celebrate one's loved ones! They are not gone, they're just not here. When you toast them, do so in present tense.
A team of scientists in Auckland and Germany have created a 3D computer model of the inside of the nasal cavity and part of the cranial cavity, basically the cubbyhole where your brain is. It's hoped the reconstruction of the human olfactory system, the part the nervous system that gives you your sense of smell, will help in the development of treatments for Parkinson's disease. Losing your sense of smell is one of the earliest indicators of Parkinsons disease and also Alzheimers, but it often goes undiagnosed. University of Auckland Professor Maurice Curtis spoke to Lisa Owen.
Special Interview with John L. Lehr, President & CEO of theParkinson's Foundation & Carla Velastegui, a Parkinson's Care Partner Each November, the Parkinson's Foundation recognizes National Family Caregivers Month as an important time to celebrate and honor the many contributions of the 65 million Americans caring for a loved one living with a chronic condition like Parkinson's disease (PD). This year, more than ever, the focus is care partner burnout as a special effort is made to encourage care partners to find time to care for themselves too.We have a special conversation with two unique experts. John L. Lehr is the President and CEO of the non-profit Parkinson's Foundation, and Carla Velastegui, a healthcare technologist and a care partner for her mother, who was diagnosed with Young-Onset Parkinson's disease (YOPD) in 2010. Each November, the Parkinson's Foundation joins organizations across the country to honor care partners for National Family Caregivers Month. In this episode, we highlight the stories and experiences of two people who care for a person with Parkinson's disease. Ripley Hensley is an emergency room nurse and a doctoral student at the University of Connecticut School of Nursing. Although she currently lives in Connecticut, she manages to find ways to help support both her mother, who is the primary caregiver, and her father who has Parkinson's, back in Georgia. Meanwhile, Tom Graffeo lives with his partner, who has young-onset Parkinson's. Although their caregiving roles differ, they share similar concerns and discuss how they provide care for their loved ones, while also prioritizing their own well-being.
