Patrick is a celebrated artist who has had his work shown in galleries all over the world, and featured alongside artists such as Sir Anthony Gormley, Gavin Turk, Shepherd Fairey, and many more. He has exhibited in a number of shows, and his pieces appear in the private collections of well-known and respected collectors. In 2020, he appeared on Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year show, and was awarded the Galerie Heimat & NG Art Creative Residency Prize which saw him spend a month this summer in the South of France. In addition, Patrick has worked with a number of brands including Faberge, ITV, and Bentley. As a little boy, Patrick was taken into long-term foster care and much of his creative work now deals with the idea of identity and ‘fitting in'. He recognises those themes as universal and he seeks to explore what makes people do what they do to have a sense of belonging. As Patrick says, “the sense of being in a tribe is all around us”. We talk about some of Patrick's early experiences, and the difficulties of growing up, when children can be so cruel; the relief of moving away to college and a fresh start; his realisation that he was naturally good at art; and a life, and a mother, which taught him the importance of simply being kind. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Gavin Turk (@thisisnotgavinturk) Gavin Turk (b 1967) is a British born, international artist. He has pioneered many forms of contemporary British sculpture now taken for granted, including the painted bronze, the waxwork, the recycled art-historical icon and the use of rubbish in art. Turk's installations and sculptures deal with issues of authorship, authenticity and identity. Concerned with the ‘myth' of the artist and the ‘authorship' of a work, Turk's engagement with this modernist, avant-garde debate stretches back to the ready-mades of Marcel Duchamp. In 1991, the Royal College of Art refused Turk a degree on the basis that his final show, ‘Cave', consisted of a whitewashed studio space containing only a blue heritage plaque commemorating his presence ‘Gavin Turk worked here 1989-91'. Instantly gaining notoriety through this installation, Turk was spotted by Charles Saatchi and was included in several YBA exhibitions. Turk's work has since been collected and exhibited by many major museums and galleries throughout the world. Also I think that many people in prison, 70% of them have mental health problems, have some disorders of one sort or another. If they didn't before they went to prison, they very likely might get some mental health issue in prison. The work actually alleviates that mental distress. I think having something to do and having a sense of purpose. You're talking about getting something finished. Imagine if you have suicidal thoughts and suicide rates in prison are quite high, much, much higher than the national average and the norm. You want to finish that before you want to kill yourself. In this interview with the artist Joshua Sofaer, Oriana asks for his help in finding her purpose, her why. He is, after all, a socially engaged artist who is deeply invested in turning life into art because art makes life more interesting than art. And, he's also a relational dynamics coach and Oriana pays for his services from time to time. They also discuss the possibility of breaking into the mainstream simply by imitating the trappings of fame. But that is not all! Tune in to get the scoop on self-help, self-exposure, doubt and boilerplate definitions.Dr Oriana Fox is an artist with a PhD in self-disclosure. She puts her expertise to work as the host of the talk show performance piece The O Show . Joshua Sofaer is an artist who is centrally concerned with modes of collaboration and participation, which he explores through social sculpture, performance, installation, exhibition and publication. Equally as comfortable in the clean white gallery, the dramatic  stage of the opera house, the carefully positioned vitrine of the museum, the shared areas of public space, and the domestic personalised rooms of private homes, what draws Sofaer's diverse practices together is a concern with how audiences engage with the world as a place of potentiality. “Art is what makes life more interesting than art” is a quote from the Fluxus artist Robert Filliou, which he gave originally in French as, “L'art est ce qui rend la vie plus intéressante que l'art”.The O Show "Business or Pleasure?" episode discussed on this podcast is available to watch on Oriana's website and youtube channel.Artists mentioned in this podcast: Shobana Jeyasingh, Gavin Turk, Robert Filliou, Stacy Makishi, Hamja Ahsan, Jeremy Deller, Miranda July and Lois Weaver [FYI: Lois will be interviewed on an upcoming episode of this very podcast series]Cultural figures who have become famous and made a lot of money after doing TED talks mentioned in this podcast: Brené Brown, Simon Sinek and Ruby Wax (well, she was famous before her TED talk, to be fair)Credits:Hosted, edited and produced by Oriana FoxPost-production mixing by Stacey HarveyThemesong written and performed by Paulette HumanbeingSpecial thanks to Katie Beeson, Janak Patel, Sven Olivier Van Damme and the Foxes and Hayeses. Would you like to see your name in the above credits list? Hear Me, See Me. Podcast. with Gary Mansfield.Fine artist, curator and Ministry of Arts Podcast host Gary Mansfield has had a most unlikely induction into the world of art: serving a fourteen year prison sentence in his early twenties for drug importation, Mansfield discovered the catalogue for the 1999 Saatchi exhibition Sensation, which brought together the group of artists known as the YBAs. and Mark Wallinger.Inspired by the work he saw, Mansfield contacted these up-and-coming artists form his cell, asking for information on their work and careers. A bold move, Mansfield's bold move was well received, and led to correspondences that would last throughout his sentence with the likes of Sarah Lucas, Gavin Turk, Gary Hume, Mark Titchner and Mark Wallinger.Under their guidance, Mansfield eventually completed a degree in Fine Art: an achievement that would come to have a profound and lasting impact on his sene of self. Since completing his degree, Mansfield has collaborated with the a number of the YBAs on various artworks and projects. He also works closely with prisoners & ex-offenders, curates large exhibitions to raising funds for various charities, and is a board member of the Koestler Trust. Intimately tied to his early life experiences, Mansfield's works explore themes of incarceration, focusing on the material enclosures of prison life, for a powerful and politically charged aesthetic. IN CONVERSATION with Black Box Projects

At Black Box Projects we believe in the transformative role art can play both in our daily lives and within the context of the medical treatment and mental health. Art has the potential to change us, to brighten spirits, to soothe, to challenge and fulfil. Join us as we discuss navigating art’s role in mental health and art engagement in these unprecedented times. IN CONVERSATION with Black Box Projects welcomes artist Steve Macleod and Co-Founders of Hospital Rooms - curator Niamh White and artist Tim A. Shaw - to discuss the role of art in mental health, the art of happiness and the important work of Hospital Rooms. Professor Steve Macleod is an artist whose practice discards the modernist approach to realist interpretation of his landscape compositions for one that uses the landscape as visual metaphors describe historical and humanist subjects that connect us with the environment we inhabit. The resulting works are layered with meaning and mood, where the artist’s emotional intent is conveyed through atmospheric suggestion and imagination. Hospital Rooms is an arts and mental health charity that commissions world-class art and implements art programmes for NHS mental health services in the UK. Artist Tim A. Shaw and curator Niamh White founded Hospital Rooms after a close friend was sectioned and admitted to a mental health hospital. On visiting her, they were shocked to find that the hospital environment was cold and clinical at a time when she was so vulnerable. Having worked in the arts for 10 years each, they felt they had the skills and community to be able to transform these spaces with high quality artworks and spaces for healing. In 2016, Dr Emma Whicher (now one of Hospital Rooms’ trustees) gave them the opportunity to run their first project at the Phoenix Unit, a rehabilitation unit for people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Here they commissioned Nick Knight, Gavin Turk, Steve Macleod, Assemble - among other world class artists - to work with patients and staff to create site specific artwork for the ward. The project received national press attention and Hospital Rooms has been inundated with requests for projects ever since. Kathlene Fox-Davies is a photography expert, art-historian and curator, with over 16 years' experience in the art world both in London and New York. Kathlene began her career as a Sales Associate at Michael Hoppen Gallery before moving to Hasted Hunt in New York as Gallery Manager. On her return to London, Kathlene joined Halcyon Gallery in Mayfair as an art consultant. She later joined ATLAS Gallery as Associate Director, introducing and overseeing a programme of contemporary artists. In 2014 Kathlene established her own art consultancy - Fox-Davies Contemporary - where she worked with a select group of clients helping to build and manage their collections. In 2017 Kathlene co-founded Black Box Projects. Kathlene has special interest in community engagement through the gallery and arts programming, transparency in business, a desire to connect clients to the art, artists and art world, as well as providing a more personal collecting experience through the gallery. Gavin Turk was born 1967 in Guildford, from 1989-91 he attended the Royal College of Art. For his MA exhibition show Cave, Turk notoriously presented a whitewashed studio space containing only a blue heritage plaque commemorating his presence. Though refused a degree, his subsequent infamy attracted the attention of Charles Saatchi and Turk became part of a loosely associated group known as the ‘Young British Artists' (YBAs). He has continued to show worldwide and has work in many national museum collections (including Tate and MOMA). His work often deals with concerns of authority and identity and has taken up many forms including the painted bronze, the waxwork, the recycled art-historical icon and the use of litter. Joseph Kosuth is one of the pioneers of Conceptual art and installation art, initiating language-based works and appropriation strategies in the 1960s. His work has consistently explored the production and role of language and meaning within art. The philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein, among others, influenced the development of his work. Kosuth's installation Zero & Not was exhibited at Berggasse 19 - The Sigmund Freud Museum in Vienna, marking the centennial of Sigmund Freud's birth. In its artistic and curatorial approach the installation drew on his seminal exhibition projects Wittgenstein – Das Spiel des Unsagbaren at the Vienna Secession (1989) in Austria and the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels. Wittgenstein's Dream is the latest in the critically acclaimed ongoing series of Freud Museum London exhibitions curated by James Putnam that have included projects by Sophie Calle, Sarah Lucas, Ellen Gallagher, Tim Noble & Sue Webster, Mat Collishaw and Miroslaw Balka. Wittgenstein's Dream is on display at The Freud Museum London 26 November 2015 – 7 February 2016  In association with Ben Brown Fine Arts.

To coincide with a major exhibition of Surrealist artist, Rene Magritte's work at Tate Liverpool, Richard Strange broadcasts from Magritte's former apartment and the recently opened Magritte Museum in Brussels to piece together the exceptional vision and by contrast, determinedly ordinary life of this outwardly conventional man who constructed intriguing and bizarre images, imploring us to "put the real world on trial". Monty Python's Terry Jones holds forth about Magritte's genius for juxtaposition, eminent writer, Suzi Gablik recalls staying with the Magritte's during the 1960s, Naresh Ramchandani explains why Magritte's paintings underpin advertising and artist Gavin Turk pays homage to the master. Intelligence Squared
Is London too rich to be interesting?

It used to be so easy. You left university, came to London and got yourself a flatshare in one of the cheaper areas: Notting Hill, Maida Vale or Highgate. Living was cheap and if it took you a while to find out what you really wanted to do with your life you could drift about a bit and get by. But now thanks to vast City bonuses and the influx of foreign billionaires, London house prices have soared beyond the reach of all but the seriously rich. Parts of Notting Hill and Kensington have become ‘buy to leave’ ghost towns, the houses boarded up and showing no signs of life. Shoreditch and Hackney, not long ago the hip new outposts for musicians and artists, are now home to well-paid professionals. And London is the worse for it. That’s the argument of those who worry that London is becoming too rich to be interesting. But is there any evidence that the city is growing bland? Quite the reverse. On any evening almost wherever you go London’s streets are abuzz with life. People here crave a communal experience and the city provides it with its 600 parks, thousands of pubs and dynamic cultural scene. There’s a dynamic between wealth and creativity that keeps London exciting. If you prefer greater egalitarianism and more cycle lanes, there’s always Stockholm. Joining us to discuss the question "Is London too rich to be interesting?" were rapper and poet Akala, journalist Tanya Gold, artist Gavin Turk, and author and journalist Simon Jenkins. The event was chaired by Kieran Long, senior curator of contemporary architecture, design and digital at the V&A. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Duncan and Richard interview art superstar Gavin Turk!!! As set forth in Wikipedia:Gavin Turk (born 1967) is a British artist and one of the Young British Artists (YBAs). He often uses his own image in life-size sculptures of famous people. He was born in Guildford, near London, and went to the Royal College of Art. However, in 1991, the tutors refused to give him the final degree because of his show, called Cave, which consisted of a whitewashed studio space, containing only a blue heritage plaque (of the kind normally found on historic buildings) commemorating his own presence as a sculptor. This bestowed some instant notoriety on Turk, whose work was collected by Charles Saatchi. His work often involves his own image disguised as that of a famous person. He has cast himself in a series of detailed life sized sculptures as different romantic heroes, including Sid Vicious, Jean-Paul Marat and Che Guevara. Pop, a waxwork model of Turk as Sid Vicious, in white jacket and black trousers, pointing a handgun (appropriating the stance of Andy Warhol's painting of Elvis Presley as a cowboy), was part of the 1997 Sensation exhibition which toured London, Berlin and New York. A set of what appeared to be classic posters of Che Guevara in a beret, revealed themselves on further scrutiny to be photos of Turk in the same pose. Ambiguity features throughout his work. What appeared to be a discarded plastic rubbish bag was in fact a bronze sculpture of one. A large industrial skip (normally yellow, battered and with rust) was painted an immaculate gloss black. He turned up at the private view of the Sensation exhibition at the solemn Royal Academy, London, dressed as a down-and-out.
