Today's guest is Hope Virgo, a multi award winning mental health campaigner, an author and an international leading advocate for people with eating disorders. For four years, Hope managed to keep her own battle with anorexia a secret from her friends and family. Hope then face the biggest challenge of her life and had to dig deep to find the courage to beat her anorexia.Fast forward and hope is thriving with the tools she's developed to maintain her recovery, and she now supports many others in doing the same. She has become a vocal advocate against such factors as BMI and determining treatment and is the founder of the Dump the Scales campaign. She has now transformed her experience into a practical guide for eating disorder sufferers and is now the author of several books which look to the future through actionable advice. If your pal hangs around like a bad smell, sucks the life out of you and doesn't actually care about you, would you stay friends? Health apps like My Fitness Pal are more popular than ever, particularly since the pandemic lockdown. But we have evidence to suggest that a high proportion of users (specifically those with eating disorders) perceive MyFitnessPal as contributing to their eating disorder. When we factor in the recent NHS Health Survey (2019) reported more than 2 Million adults screened positive for an eating disorder pre pandemic (with numbers now likely to be much higher post pandemic), we can't ignore these tools can contribute to poor health outcomes in the vulnerable. In this episode I touch on the benefits that some may experience from tracking food, exercise and weight but I focus more heavily on the downsides, and the reasons why some users find them detrimental to their health. I also share three tips to help reduce food and number obsession….you might guess the first one? Lastly I have a moan at Boris Johnson and Sajid Javid in my Pick n Mix about their complete lack of common sense approach with putting Calories on menus policy. Bloody hell. Welcome to a very special, Christmas episode of the Proper Mental podcast! Tis the season that not everybody enjoys, for a lot of different reasons. I wanted to put something out at Christmas that might give someone a little lift if they needed one, even if it's just for 5 minutes. Sometimes 5 minutes can make all the difference. I reached out to advocates, campaigners, authors, speakers and podcasters and friends and I asked them to record a voice note that might be nice for someone to hear over Xmas. Some of these people I knew and some I didn't but all of them are wonderful and inspiring and I was so touched by the response. You'll have to listen to hear if there is anyone you recognise! I've put them all together here in this episode. There are some anecdotes, some advice, some kind words and even the odd gag. You can listen in one go or dip in and out when you want to. It might help if you're not really in the mood for Christmas and if you love this time of year, then it will inspire you to love it even more. I reached out to a bunch of strangers and asked them to leave a supportive message for a different bunch of strangers and all these people said yes. That truly is a sign that you are not alone and to me, it's the true spirit of Xmas. There are so many support services that stay open and available during the Xmas period, please reach out if you need to. Please talk to someone if you need to. If you or anyone you know needs to find support in your local area, head to www.hubofhope.co.uk. There's a link in my bio. Hope Virgo joins Abi and Debbie on the podcast episode this time, returning to our show to bring an update about her research work and the #UKCostofEatingDisorders Report. For several months, Hope has been collaborating with MPs like Kate Parminster, Gillian Keegan, Wera Hobhouse and John McDonnell in an effort to see a greater spotlight placed on the stark reality of eating disorder ‘need' as it stands in the UK today. We chat to Hope about how the report was received in Parliament, how she feels about the findings, whether she remains optimistic, and what she envisages for the next stage in her campaigning efforts. You'll also hear us discuss the ever more apparent need for greater education around eating disorders in society generally, and the ongoing efforts – among the likes of Wednesday's Child – to ensure that stigma, bias and false perception continue to be challenged around who suffers and why. Welcome to Time To Talk. Passing. Fetishisation. Colourism. Mixed race identity. These are the topics I have the pleasure of speaking to my friend Natalie Morris about this week on the show. Her book, Mixed/Other: Explorations of Multiraciality In Modern Britain. The book comes at an essential time, especially in Black History Month where it can bring up very strong feelings of exclusion for mixed race black people when entering the conversation. Interestingly enough, out in cinemas this week is Passing - the new film written and directed by Rebecca Hall, starring Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson about African-Americans who had skin color light enough to be perceived as "white" - which is known as ‘Passing'. Gemma spoke to Rebecca Hall – who's own Grandfather ‘passed' as white - about the movie which is out in cinemas on October 27th and will be on Netflix on November 10th - and is based on the 1929 novel by Nella Larsen. We do have an in depth conversation about what it means to ‘pass' especially today in the age of Meghan and Harry; the identities of mixed race people; fetishisation from within and without the Black community, and what books Natalie wants to share with us this week. Natalie and I have worked together as journalists before, and she is deputy lifestyle editor at the Metro covering race, mental health, women in sport and women in the work place. She has a column called Mixed Up on Metro.co.uk. She hails from Manchester, and is doing the work to make the newsroom a much more inclusive place. Find Natalie on Instagram and Twitter I do hope you enjoy the episode. Don't forget to rate, review and subscribe, and share far and wide. —— Some NEWS. Hope Virgo embodies true Running for Real spirit. She demonstrates the courage of speaking the truth and being honest with oneself, especially through challenges. Hope has written two books sharing about recovery from eating disorders, mental health campaigner helping young people and employers, and is an advocate for people with eating disorders. In this episode, Hope shares with Tina her story of going through years of anorexia and her journey of recovery, with hopes to shed light on this issue that many people are battling alone. Hope shares that there are so much shame and guilt around anorexia or any eating disorder, that it’s difficult for people to accept they have a problem and seek help. She was actually an outpatient at a hospital for 6 months before turning into an inpatient at the hospital and lived there for one year. Then came the daily journey of choosing recovery and choosing to move forward with it every day. Take Aways Embrace how you’re feeling on a day to day basis. Don’t distract yourself from your emotions. It’s braver to say you’re having a hard time, rather than bottling it up. Once you start showing vulnerability, it helps pave the way for others to feel more comfortable showing vulnerability. Have a conversation with someone who’s struggling and ask them what’s going on and how you can support them. In America, only 6% of people with eating disorders are actually underweight. While eating disorders are there, they might not be physically apparent but are very much there mentally. Hope believes in the power of community to help people through their mental health and eating disorders rather than being institutionalized. Be proactive. Have people who help you stay accountable, support networks, and a plan in place. If you know of someone who’s struggling, do other activities with them that are not related to food or going out to eat. Highlights “Eating disorders are a mental health issue, not a physical illness.” —Hope Virgo “People with eating disorders come in all shapes and sizes. They can be people of all different races and backgrounds. 25% of cases are actually male. —Hope Virgo “We all have good days and bad days and throughout life, we work our ways up and down that spectrum. It’s about replacing those unhealthy coping mechanisms (whether through food or exercise), and replacing them with healthy things that work (like journaling or going for a walk).” —Hope Virgo Resources: Hope's Website Hope's Instagram #Dumpthescales Campaign Hope’s favourite places to go for Support: The Hub of Hope (and not just because it has my name!) – it provides a quick way to pull up a list of services in your area. The discussion around eating disorders is not an easy one. For those affected, the subject is deeply personal, can be related to trauma and asking for help is nearly always a struggle in itself. But how do you bring the issue into the light? Averil Hart was just 19 when she died in December 2012 after battling anorexia, ten weeks after starting university.Following the recent conclusion of an inquest into her death, the assistant coroner promised to send a “prevention of future deaths report” to NHS England. This year though has presented further challenges for people with eating disorders. Restrictions due to COVID and uncertainty around Christmas are a concern for many. She is also an author and award-winning advocate for people with eating disorders.
