The Talking Inclusion series seeks to enable more inclusive communities and greater diversity in our workplaces. Producer Geordie Anderson and host Bill Armstrong share the life stories of people from a wide and varied mix of backgrounds – most often from minority groups. These are stories that you may never have pondered, from people whose journeys and challenges you may never have experienced. The Talking Inclusion team believe that by sharing these stories we can foster more empathy and understanding, and by enabling greater understanding we can overcome the inherent bias that limits our ability to include and connect with people whose life and experiences have been different to our own. Talking Inclusion is sponsored by the Hunter Diversity and Inclusion Collective, a group of like-minded spirits seeking to make the Greater Hunter region of New South Wales (in Australia) a more diverse and inclusive community (something which hasn’t come naturally to this part of the world in the past).

Bonus EpisodeAs an immigrant kid who grew up in La Perouse in the 1960s and 70s I've had views on the relationship between Indigenous and Anglo-Australians across 7 decades now. In this bonus episode: Geordie has surprised me by capturing my ponderings on White Australia's relationship with First Nations people from clips from our informal recordings. Also, as these clips were recorded earlier in 2022 we also yarn about the potential of the recent Australian Federal Election and the (then upcoming) 2022 Golden Pineapple Awards.Ngubadi Marri.BillTrack 1:“Lonely Ambient” by DelaytapeLicensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike LicenseTrack 2:“Birds and Insects near Dam - Cathedral Ranges” by Sassabyhttps://freesound.org/people/Sassaby/sounds/427877/This work is licensed under the Creative Commons 0 LicensePLUS:“Rain and Thunder” by FlatHillhttps://freesound.org/people/FlatHill/sounds/237729/This work is licensed under the Creative Commons 0 LicenseTrack 3:“Discord” by Nul Tiel RecordsLicensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License

It was a great pleasure for Geordie and I to catch-up for a yarn with the wonderful Timothy Jackson. We are big fans of his Drag Queen character ‘Timberlina' and it was great to hear all about her life and journey. Timberlina recently received the ‘Community Initiative' Award for Outstanding Achievement in Diversity and Inclusion at the 2021 Golden Pineapples, not the least for her ‘Rainbow Storylines' Shows for Kids (in partnership with our local Councils). Timothy is a wise fellow who offers our listeners timely advice about acceptance, self-expression and fun! This episode also features the music: ‘Area' by Silicon Transmitter & ‘Sidelines' by local band Doris. NGUBADI MARRI
M+15 To kick-off Series 2 Geordie and Bill reflect upon Series 1 and spill the beans on their intentions for the new series. Speaking to the need for our Community to ‘brake it in order to fix it' and calling out the bull$&@! associated with the current ‘on trend' nature of the conversations around Diversity and Inclusion, the boys also warn us that Series 2 will be less polite than its predecessor, and probably a bit edgy! This episode includes music by: The Clash (Sean Flynn) and PIL (Rise) and an introduction to Rose Flannery (from Singleton) and her song ‘Bones'. Also included are snippets from the John Waters Movies: Female Trouble, Serial Mom and Polyester and additional music by Kevin Macleod
In this episode we meet Ed Abbott who shares this journey from Dunedoo, to the Newcastle Pride Festival and a career in Media and Communications. We learn about the Festival's plans for 2021 and the positive vibes around the LGBTQI community in the Hunter. With a special appearance from Jet the Dog, we also introduce local band Chop who we would describe as ‘Punk/RAP/Screamer'.
In our latest episode we meet Iman of the Islamic Centre Newcastle, Mohammad, who shares with us: the history of the Centre and the essence of the Islamic faith. His chat with Bill takes us to an understanding that all faiths share the same principles of Love, Forgiveness and Humility
Stuart McMinn is a descendant of the Dharug and Waka Waka people who works with school students, corporate and public organisations teaching Indigenous culture, dance, spirituality and traditional ways of being. Our yarn with Stuart was a blessing, and it is with joy that Geordie and I share the experience with you in Episode Five of Series One (with this episode's musical introduction being with Chloe Parker from Speers Point).
In this episode, we meet Steve Ripley, a deafblind person and learn about his journey and experiences. Steve is a wonderful communicator and you will value his wisdom, wit, charm and insights. Steve helps us understand that access and involvement are as important as inclusion, and shares many enjoyable stories along the way. Also, in our episode Extras, we introduce local band ‘Boycott' who are currently studying at the Hunter Performing Arts School.
In this episode, Bill speaks with Maree, a woman of short stature. She tells us her life story starting with being born in a rural NSW town.
In this episode we meet Stella Umeh and hear her journey (as a person of colour) from Canada, to University in the USA, to the Olympics, to Cirque de'Sole to Newcastle. Stella is a great story teller and her story is timely as the ‘Black Lives Matter' conversation takes place across the globe. We hope you enjoy meeting Stella as much as Bill and Producer Geordie Anderson did in her Charlestown home.
Bill Armstrong, a diversity and inclusion advocate and the host of the Talking Inclusion podcast gives an overview and background as to why he started the Hunter Diversity and Inclusion Collective. He discusses what made him embark on this podcast journey and is joined by podcast enthusiast, music lover and our podcast producer Geordie.
