L7 takes victory lap on 'Last Hurrah' tour (Episode 1124) L7 is embarking on their final run, The Last Hurrah Tour, capping off a legendary career with a final celebration of iconic songs, hooks, and unforgettable riffs. For Chicago fans, the circle closes at the Vic Theatre on Sunday, November 1, a stage the band hasn't commanded since 1994. In this episode, L7 co-founder, guitarist, and vocalist Donita Sparks joins the show to reflect on the long road, the band's legacy, and what it means to finally say goodbye on their own terms. Donita looks back at the band's transition from its indie roots to early 90s alternative mainstays and highlights along the way, like being anointed by John Waters for Serial Mom. "We wanted our gender to not be relevant... we just wanted to prove in a punk rock way that you could throw a band together, work hard, and go on tour." — Donita Sparks Beyond the nostalgia, Donita dives deep into the sonic DNA of L7, explaining why they will always be a "guitar band, not a vocal band." She opens up about the realities of the 90s major label system, the resilience it took to create The Beauty Process: Triple Platinum, and the joy of reconnecting with fans over the last decade. It's a candid conversation about hard work, and ultimately, a mission accomplished. The end is near, and you don't want to miss the last hurrah. Press play and check out the full conversation with Donita Sparks. Side B is where the spotlight turns to the Mr VicBears 2026 competition — and the humans brave enough to step into it. In this half of Episode 222, Hide and Seek meets the Class of '26: Teddy, Justin, Ray, Jake and Craig. It's a line-up full of history, heart, camp, nerves, confidence, and wildly different journeys into the bear community. Each competitor shares how they found the bears, what keeps them coming back, and why they've decided to run for the sash. We talk community advocacy, representation, confidence-building, favourite '90s films (yes, Clueless and Serial Mom both feature), and the very real mix of excitement and terror that comes with putting yourself out there. This isn't just about abs, beards, or who owns the most outfits with paw prints. It's about visibility, approachability, and what it means to represent a community built on belonging rather than perfection. From long-time committee members to returning competitors and first-time entrants, the Class of '26 reflects the diversity and generosity of the bear scene itself. Side B is funny, warm, occasionally awkward, and deeply sincere — a reminder that while only one person gets the sash, the real win is showing up, being seen, and strengthening the community along the way. The competitors each highlighted a charity for their runs: Teddy spoke about Switchboard Justin threw behind the Australian Queer Archives Ray highlighted Transgender Victoria Jake talked up QLife and Craig covered Out of the Closet, Out of Options Follow Tim instagram.com/beatzradio/ Follow Jon instagram.com/barbarylion/ Follow Craig instagram.com/white.dragon.339/ This episode was recorded on the lands of the Yalukut Weelam clan of the Boon Wurrung peoples. Season 9, Episode 14 (Originally released on September 8th, 2025) Welcome back to the Shame List Picture Show. On this episode, I'm joined by Nick Richards, former co-host of the show. After a recent meeting with John Waters, Nick and I decided it was the perfect time to sit down for a Waters double feature. We're talking about Cry-Baby (1990) and Serial Mom (1994). Cry-Baby is Waters' take on 1950s teen rebel movies, starring Johnny Depp as a leather-jacketed heartthrob. Serial Mom features Kathleen Turner as Beverly Sutphin, a seemingly perfect suburban mom with a very dark secret. Nick and I get into what makes these two films stand out in Waters' career, how they balance camp and satire, and why his work continues to leave such a lasting impression.Version 1.0.0 Be sure to check out our Patreon at www.patreon.com/shamelistpictureshow Edited by: Austin Proctor Produced by: Michael Viers Theme Music by: Austin Proctor Opening Narration by: Nick RichardsCredits Music by: Ten-Speed Logo Design by: Amanda Viers

The story so far: Things in the movie hole drag on. Maybe it's the movies (or maybe it's the body odor and beer) but Dan is starting to snap. They create life. Sometimes, they take it away. This week's episode is all about moms and how they can be serial killers sometimes! The boys break down John Waters' 1994 classic satire Serial Mom. Between the movie's kills, awkward sex, white-picket-fence setting, and constant references to classic gore films, the boys get distracted talking about prank phone calls, glory holes, whether or not the glossy sheen of wealthy suburban life is a smokescreen hiding a deeply-rooted violent rage at an ill-defined 'outsider' class that only exists as a way to define itself by comparison, and how men can protect themselves while they're peeing.Leave us a 30 second voicemail and if we like it we'll play it on the show: (949) 4-STABBY (949-478-2229)Next movie announced every Wednesday. We review the 1994 John Waters' movie Serial Mom.
Writer, director, actor, and artist John Waters has been making avant-garde cinema since the 1960s. His movies have pushed boundaries and shocked audiences with their wild characters and surreal storylines, even as they offer piercing insights into popular American culture and society. While he experienced mainstream crossover success by the 1980s and into the 2000s, and has been embraced by many in the entertainment industry, John Waters is inherently an outsider –- and he wouldn't have it any other way. He is a unique, visionary queer voice in American cinema. So for one of our 2025 Pride specials, the Great Pop Culture Debate looks back on 8 of The Pope of Trash's most notable movies and attempts to name the Best John Waters Film. Movies discussed: Hairspray (1988), Serial Mom (1994), Pink Flamingos (1972), Cry-Baby (1990), Female Trouble (1974), Mondo Trasho (1969), Polyester (1981), Pecker (1998). Join host Eric Rezsnyak, GPCD panelist Jonny Minogue, and special guests Erin Marlow from the It's a Fandom Thing podcast, and Joshua Grannell AKA Peaches Christ, alternative drag icon and host of the Midnight Mass podcast, as they discuss 8 of the most notorious John Waters films. Is it a horror movie? Well, no. Or is it?Kathleen Turner certainly slays in this movie about a mom who's completely lost it, brought to you by the good and great John Waters. And...is that a baby Matthew Lillard? Awww, he's so cute! Woah, Patty Hearts? It's camp. It's courtroom drama. It's relentlessly making fun of "true crime" before we even really knew those words. Beverly Sutphin (Kathleen Turner) is the nicest lady you'd ever hope to meet. She has a nice dentist husband, Eugene (Sam Waterson) and two lovely children, Chip (Matthew Lillard) and Misty (Ricki Lake), is friendly to all and she even recycles! Don't go stealing her parking spot like neighbor, Dottie Hinkle (Mink Stole) or Bev will make obscene phone calls. Don't insult her son like the math teacher (John Badila) or she'll run you over. Don't break her daughter's heart like Carl (Lonnie Horsey) or she'll stab your liver out. You better rewind those video tapes or you'll be beaten with a leg of lamb like that freak Mrs. Jenson (Patsy Grady Adams). And definitely don't wear white shoes after labor day like Juror #8 (Patricia Hearst). Beverly goes on a rampage in Serial Mom, this week on Doom Generation.
Hold onto your VHS tapes and watch out for stray legs of lamb because Lillard Mayhem Month kicks off with a killer episode! Jackie and Danielle, alongside their fabulous guest Amber, dive into John Waters' 1994 cult classic Serial Mom. Join the gang as they debate whether suburban serial killer Beverly Sutphin is truly evil or just the embodiment of a PTA mom gone rogue. With Kathleen Turner's impeccable portrayal of a deranged yet devoted housewife, the hosts hilariously dissect every gruesome murder, from the bloody shoe fiasco to Beverly's unwavering disdain for white shoes after Labor Day. Spoiler alert: The recycling police have never been scarier.Between cracking up over Beverly's wild rampages and uncovering behind-the-scenes trivia, the trio ponder Matthew Lillard's cinematic debut and dream up the ultimate “killer mom” musical. Plus, Amber's encyclopedic knowledge of John Waters' filmography and Danielle's fashion trauma over white shoes will leave you in stitches. Whether you're a fan of horror comedies or just here for the Lillard love, this episode guarantees laughs, nostalgia, and a newfound fear of toe-licking dogs. Way before people were obsessed with true crime podcasts, there was a movie that was basically about the idea of people who would be obsessed with true crime podcasts. Not quite a horror movie, but also not not a horror movie, this week we ask if Serial Mom holds up!
Our season of political thrillers continues with guest Kayla Bates (host of ScreenVomit) joining to discuss Mary Harron's AMERICAN PSYCHO starring Christian Bale, Chloë Sevigny, Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto, Samanta Mathis and Reese Witherspoon. Based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis, this turn-of-the-millenium satirical thriller delves into the psyche of Patrick Bateman, a status-obsessed investment banker leading a double life as a sadistic serial killer in 1980s Manhattan. Anchored by an audacious performance from Bale, AMERICAN PSYCHO had much to say about Trump-style materialism and dehumanization long before Trump entered the political arena. As both a slyly feminist work and an oft-misinterpreted staple of filmbro canon, it's only grown in esteem as a darkly fascinating film to watch and discuss. Join us as we go nuts for AMERICAN PSYCHO, taking diversions into Blink Twice, The Dark Knight, Serial Mom, Chris Hansen, Gloria Steinem, Caligula, and much, much more! AMERICAN PSYCHO is currently available to stream with subscription to Netflix.
Joe from Films at First Sight and No Film Left Behind joins Caitlin to cover 1994's Serial Mom, the monstrous motherhood classic from John Waters. 2024 marks Serial Mom's 30th anniversary, and we are thrilled to revisit it. We talk about our favorite jokes, our favorite kills, and just how John-Waters-y this movie is. Tangents include: a mini review of Trap, movies we wish we could rewatch for the first time, 2024 horror, black and white movies, dream houses, prank calls, ghost activities, and Joe's pronunciation of water.
L7 were pioneers. Yes, there were all female rock bands before, but how many rocked as hard as they did with as much authenticity? Those four girls let it all hang out and walked it like they talked it. Success had to find them, they weren't going to play any games to find it. They finally broke through with 'Pretend We're Dead" off their third album, but it was hard keeping it all together and the band began to fracture soon after. For the last several years, the original members have reformed for a new album (2019's Scatter the Rats), several "victory lap" tours celebrating their legacy. Donita Sparks joins us this week to discuss the whole story including hanging out with Lemmy, Nick Cave and Butch Vig as well as filming Serial Mom with John Waters, the response to their 2016 documentary, and tons more.
