Bestselling thriller writer(s) Nicci French go head to head in a war of the words, expertly refereed by Joe Haddow.Nicci French is the pen name for husband and wife writing team, Nicci Gerrard and Sean French, and this is our first official Book Off couple! Sean and Nicci discuss their latest novel, The Last Days Of Kira Mullan, and dig into some of the themes which inspired this story. Here's the blurb:Nancy North and her boyfriend Felix are making the move across London to Harlesden. A new flat, a new area, a new start. Because while Nancy is fine now, she wasn't fine before. But settling into the new flat and meeting the new neighbours isn't helped by Felix's hovering concern. She is all right. She is sticking to her breathing exercises and doctor-prescribed help. So, when their new neighbour Kira Mullan is found dead by suicide, Felix is understandably worried about Nancy's frame of mind. But Nancy saw Kira the day before she died and she didn't strike her as someone who was suicidal – she was upset and angry, yes, but was she upset and angry enough to take her own life? Nancy is the only one convinced that there's more to Kira's death than has been discovered. But all the police and the neighbours see is a vulnerable woman who isn't sure of what she saw, and might even be imagining things . . . Nicci and Sean also give us some brilliant book recommendations - SO MANY recommendations - which include the audiobook of Samuel Pepys' diaries. As former journalists, they're both pretty competitive, but we don't think the Book Off will be the end of the marriage... (?) Today we're talking with Nicci from Invest in Farming Co-operative.IIF (Invest in Farming Co-operative) is revolutionizing agricultural investment by connecting consumers directly with farmers through a user-friendly app. This platform allows individuals to invest in specific agricultural assets—such as a row of grapevines, a single cow, or a basket of oysters—without the need to own a farm. By preselling a portion of their produce, farmers gain immediate access to capital, enhancing cash flow and reducing reliance on traditional banking systems. Investors, in turn, can watch their investments grow and receive returns within a few months. Operating as a member-based co-operative, IIF fosters a closer connection between those who produce food and those who consume it, benefiting both farmers and consumers alike.IIF - Invest in Farming Co-operative - A farm in your pocket Hosted on Acast. As the motorsports world settles into its Olympic summer break, Conor Daly and Chase Holden keep you up to date with another episode of Speed Street. To help further recap his recent NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Conor invites the winner of the event Riley Herbst to the show to give his perspective from the front of the pack. Riley provides listeners with insight to how the race played out for him in the final laps, and how he felt like he lost the race going into turn four after light contact with Aric Almirola. Conor also asks Riley about the aero strategy that is prevalent in the Xfinity Series and how drivers methodically pack dirty air onto an opponent's rear spoiler to help make passes. Finally, the guys look ahead to the upcoming NASCAR events at Michigan International and speculate what this speedway package's on-track racing product will look like.It wouldn't be Olympic coverage without chatting with an actual Olympian, and Speed Street just happened to find one who has connections to the IndyCar world. None other than Conor's own cousin Nicci Daly joins the show to discuss her time at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with the Ireland women's Field Hockey team. Nikki explains that the process to qualify for the Olympics was actually more difficult and time consuming than competing in the actual summer games, and just making it to the big stage was a major accomplishment in itself. Nicci shares some hilarious stories from the Olympic village and what it was like interacting with other athletes from all over the world. Nicci also fills listeners in on her current position working for Turn 3 Motorsports in the USF Pro2000 Series as a data engineer.

In episode 262 of The Super Human Life, host Frank Rich interviews Jake Hamilton. They discuss the crisis of masculinity within the church and the root of the problem. Jake explains that the lack of rites of passage and initiation rituals in our culture and the church leads to a confusion of responsibilities between boyhood and manhood. This confusion results in an ego-driven pursuit of masculinity, where men seek to be heroes rather than warriors and prioritize their own desires above all else. Hamilton emphasizes the importance of honoring God, protecting women, and preparing children as the main responsibilities of a man. He also discusses the feminization of the church and the need for men to embrace suffering, sacrifice, and a bigger vision for their lives. In this conversation, Jake Hamilton and Frank Rich discuss the importance of healing and integration in order to break cycles and live a whole and authentic life. They explore the concept of departing from business as usual and embarking on a journey of self-discovery and growth. They emphasize the need for men to engage with their emotions, particularly grief, in order to experience true transformation. The conversation also touches on the crisis of masculinity in the church and the importance of initiation and role models for young boys. Overall, the conversation highlights the path to biblical masculinity and the power of living a life aligned with one's values and purpose. Takeaways The crisis of masculinity within the church is rooted in the lack of rites of passage and initiation rituals in our culture and the church. Men need to clearly understand the responsibilities of manhood, which include honoring God, protecting women, and preparing children. The ego-driven pursuit of masculinity leads to a self-centered approach to life and a disconnection from God and others. The church has become feminized and focused on emotional experiences rather than the sacrificial nature of masculinity. Men need to embrace suffering, sacrifice, and a bigger vision for their lives in order to fulfill their true purpose. Healing and integration are essential for breaking cycles and living a whole and authentic life. Engaging with emotions, particularly grief, is necessary for true transformation. The crisis of masculinity in the church can be addressed through initiation and the presence of positive role models. Living a life aligned with one's values and purpose leads to fulfillment and impact. Jake Hamilton has been in full-time active ministry for over two decades. He has been a church planter in Southern California, a creative entrepreneur since he started his first business painting murals at the age of 15, as well as a worship leader on a local level and globally as a part of Jesus Culture Music for several years. His radical style of music has been described by Relevant Magazine as “a cross between Led Zeppelin and the Foo Fighters.” He is also a dynamic preacher and communicator speaking in schools and stadiums across the globe, he has been an evangelist both on the streets and in global church movements, spent time as a local youth pastor in a thriving creative community, launched a 24-hour a house of prayer in his home city of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, and has been a songwriter whose songs have been sung and recorded around the world. He and his wife, Nicci, have also fueled a movement called OneFlesh, which has focused specifically on marriages and family—proclaiming the coming reformation in the Church and seeing hundreds of marriages restored and redeemed even years after divorce. He is currently heading a men's movement called THE FIGHT, gathering men to make agreement with their story and get acquainted with death as they learn what it means to walk in biblical manhood as modeled by Jesus Christ. As an artist he desires to push the limits of creativity, and as a father and a husband he is committed to his family first. But above any of his endorsements and accomplishments, he is a lover of Jesus Christ with the ability to lead others into the same encounter that transformed his life over 25 years ago. He has always said his goal was simple, “I want to spend my life throwing keys into prison cells.”

Nicci Take featured in our first Pride series in 2021 and shared her story as a prominent transgender advocate, inspirational speaker and coach. We have watched Nicci's presence grow and thrive over the past 3 years, she posts frequent inspirational content on Linked IN and we we wanted to ask her back onto the podcast to share some of that wisdom - particularly as we get ready to launch our pride series of 2024 in coming weeks. Now global head coach at MMC Marsh McLennan, Nicci works with teams to help the company secure more deals. We speak about the dynamics of being memorable in these presentations, and how prioritizing the needs of the audience is paramount. We discuss the poor retention levels of audiences, citing the Ebbinghaus Curve of Forgetting and the staggering amount of information that is forgotten as time passes from the date of acquiring it. This reinforces the importance of repetition and follow up. Nicci cites the “day, week, month” mantra for follow up, which sets the cadence for interactions after the initial meeting, and a host of other tips for making presentations memorable, including that it really is not about the presenter.

On this episode, Amber and Erika are joined by platinum-selling R&B diva Nicci Gilbert of the iconic trio Brownstone. Nicci is a singer, songwriter, and film and stage producer who created the stage play “Soul Kittens Cabaret” in 2003. Nicci subsequently filed suit against the Starz network and others alleging that the hit show “P-Valley” uses the same plot line and wrongly infringes upon copyrighted elements of Soul Kittens Cabaret. Through her own experience, Nicci explains what intellectual property is and how difficult it can be for Black creatives in particular to protect their work. She candidly discusses the entertainment industry normalizing the theft of intellectual property through bad contracts, promises of exposure, and enforcing the notion that it's part of “paying one's dues” on the road to success. Nicci uses her and other Black artist's experiences to explain what's at stake when creatives lose ownership of their work. But most importantly, we learn what's being done to close the gap. Tune in to learn more! Activity
Nicci Cloete is a coach, a facilitator, a mindfulness and yoga teacher. She's also been in recovery for ten years In this episode:- Nicci experienced trauma in her early teens when her family had a home invasion – she was raped at the age of 13 She had medical and legal support but this was in the 80's and there was no attention paid to the mental health impact. A few days off and then Nicci was expected to return to school and carry on. She turned to alcohol – stealing booze out of her parents wine cabinet – helped her to numb her pain and cope with the difficult emotions and the flashbacks – of course she had PTSD although it wasn't diagnosed. In the morning Nicci would grab a bottle of wine and drink it before going to school, arriving drunk at school. She was developing the skill of drinking undercover and nobody called her out on it. In spite of the drinking she kept up with her schoolwork, became head of house and got the grades she needed to go to university Once she got to university there was no longer any need to be secretive as everybody drank although she did notice that not everybody drank like she did, not everybody was having blackouts After graduating Nicci went to London and worked in recruitment – very much a work hard play hard culture. Working from 7am to 7pm and then going to the pub to get hammered with her colleagues. Still suffering from blackouts and sometimes not remembering how she got home When she moved into a flat with a guy and his fiancé she did a lot of drinking on her own when she was in her room. The next morning she would emerge from her solitary binge perfectly groomed, looking like she had it all together. We agreed that it takes a huge amount of energy to keep the show on the road – to hold down a responsible job with a crashing hangover. Nicci moved to California where her wine habit continued Yoga had always been an important part of Nicci's life and she was alternating between doing yoga and drinking her wine. When she returned to South Africa she was thrilled to discover that she was pregnant and immediately stopped drinking….for the first time in 20 years… And it wasn't difficult at all! However once her babies had finished breastfeeding she started drinking again and got into the mommyjuice scene Once her children were sleeping she would dive into the wine Every morning she would wake up and vow not to drink that night but of course her resolution would always crumble She was in the groundhog day of daily drinking Like many of us Nicci would be able to drink normally at social events but once she got home she would carry on drinking on her own. Nicci's turning point came one New Years Eve when she announced to her husband that she would be doing a Dry January… she got drunk on New Years Eve The next morning her husband announced that he would be taking their children away if she didn't quit. That was her wake up call She went to a GP who was very straight with her –telling her that the alcohol would destroy her if she didn't take control Nicci came out with a great analogy about moderation – trying to moderate when you're an alcoholic is like getting into a boxing ring where you are going to get knocked o ut every time. You can duck and dive and try to avoid getting hit but at some stage you'll get the sucker punch. The only way to avoid this is not to step into the ring in the first place! Nicci got some help and did the work – she realised that she would have to lift the veil and see that her marriage was unfulfilling, that motherhood was hard and that she would have to face up and process the demons from her childhood trauma. We talked about how our emotional maturity stalls when we start to drink heavily Sitting with our feelings is the hard thing – the mature adult hard stuff which we must do One of the things that really helped Nicci was being aware of the Recovey Timeline – as she said there are many variations of this but as a rule of thumb:- 0-15 days in withdrawal 15-45 pink cloud with dopamine levels spiking 45 to 90 days + the wall which is when a low mood might strike Beyond 90 days you start regularising your neurotransmitters and things begin to feel manageable We both agreed on the crazy system in some rehabs where they keep you in for a few weeks and then discharge you just as you hit the wall… Nicki shared that people often tell her that she is so strong for quitting alcohol….. but as she said the life of a functioning alcoholic is also hard – keeping the show on the road with a stonking hangover! Coping with an ever increasing dependence and all the health issues that come along with alcohol That's hard! So it's a matter of choosing your hard…yes it's hard to be sober for those first 90 days but if you stick at it your life will start changing in such a positive way as you become healthier and happier Nicci is passionate about coaching and loves the fact that we all have the answers within us As a coach her role is to help her client tap into their deepest knowing by asking the right questions She's studied coaching with the University of CapeTown and Thoughtsmith and qualified just before COVID hit She has been trained to work online and is very comfortable working online with people from all over the world Nicci also works in corporates and teaches mindfulness Her advice to someone who is struggling is to reach out – find someone who will call you out on your bullshit She works with people in recovery – helping people to explore what they really want from their life now they are sober Nicci's website is com and she's on the socials as Metta 356 coach More info Subscription membership for Tribe Sober join up HERE To access our website click HERE If you would like a free copy of our "Annual Tracker" or our e-book "66 Days to Sobriety" please email janet@tribesober.com If you would like to come to our Saturday afternoon Zoom Cafe as a guest and meet our community just email janet@tribesober.com Episode Sponsor This episode is sponsored by the Tribe Sober Membership Program. When it comes to getting healthier, diet is everyone's go to. But I always say, it's the easiest thing to change but also the hardest. Why? Because changing what you eat is not hard as all the better options are available. In theory. Why it is the hardest is because people get into habits, they are influenced by their environment, they choose convenience and mostly because they are built deep emotional relationships with food. That's why I brought Nicci onto the show. She understands all of that and much more because she has been through her own pain to purpose journey with food. I also needed someone who works with food and diets every single day to tell everyone out there listening that diet is not about starvation, and if it is, you will never succeed.Nicci Robertson is the founder of Re~Invent Heath, a nutrition coaching practice in Johannesburg, the cost of the Re~Invent Heath podcast and author of the new book Thrive: Healthy Recipes that Break the Diet Rules. She is a clinical nutritionist, trained in functional nutrition, a master practitioner of Neuro Linguistic Programming and Psycho-Neuro Immunology.
