With Western Sydney International Airport still a year and a half from opening, an unexpected alternative might be about to hit the congested NSW market: Newcastle Airport, a couple of hours north of Sydney, will soon have flights to Perth and Bali with more routes potentially on the way. The news will not only allow Hunter Region residents to travel further afield without having to make the trek down to Sydney, it could also give Sydneysiders an alternative to the city's own crowded airport while WSI finishes construction, providing to Sydney what Gold Coast Airport does to Brisbane. As Newcastle Airport nears completion on its ambitious international terminal redevelopment, Adam and Jake look at what it might do for commercial aviation on the east coast. Plus, after the tumult of the last few years, is Qantas finally climbing its way out of a massive public trust deficit?

In the latest episode of The Parenting Couch podcast, Rachel and Sarah talk to Phillip Heath, Head of Barker College, about how to choose a school for your child and why Barker made the transition to fully co-educational in 2022.Choosing a school for your child is one of the biggest decisions you'll make as a parent. There are many factors to consider… practical considerations like how close it is to where you live, public transport options, cost, where friends might be going, and before & after school care. There are also school factors to consider – the size of the school, facilities, religious affiliation, teaching philosophy, academic results, their approach to behaviour management, support for children with additional needs. You'll also be wanting to consider how different schools might suit children's personalities, strengths, needs and interests.Another thing to think about is whether you choose a co-educational or a single sex school. For some, this can be one of the most important factors.Phillip Heath achieved a First Class Honours degree in Reformation History and taught at Trinity Grammar School Sydney and King's School Ely (UK), before becoming Deputy Head of The William Clarke College in Kellyville, and then Headmaster of St Andrew's Cathedral School, Sydney, where he formed the Gawura Campus for Indigenous inner city children. Author of “Trinity, the Daring of Your Name”, and numerous journal articles, Mr Heath became fifth Principal of Radford College ACT in 2009 and the school received the Order of Australia Association (ACT) Award for Community Service twice under his leadership. He was made a Fellow of the ACT Branch ACEL in 2011 and in 2018 was awarded as a Member in the general division of the Order of Australia for his service to education and his commitment to creating greater opportunities for Indigenous students. He was appointed as the Head of Barker College in 2014. In 2016 it was announced that the School would transition to be fully coeducational by 2022 with female students commencing in Years Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten in 2018, Year 3 in 2019 and Year 7 in 2020. In 2016 he formed the Darkinjung Barker Campus for Indigenous children on the Central Coast of New South Wales and in 2020 the Ngarralingayil Barker Campus for Indigenous children in the Hunter Region of New South Wales. In 2021, following the signing of an MOU with the Yothu Yindi Foundation, Dhupuma Barker commenced as a school for Indigenous children On Country in North East Arnhem Land.Phillip has served on the NSW Board of Studies representing the Independent Sector (2000-2009) and is also a past National Chair of the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia (2013-2015). He is currently working on an unpublished manuscript titled “One Life at a Time”, exploring his journey and work to create greater educational opportunities for Australia's First Nations people.#theparentingcouch #theparentingcouchpodcast #parenting #northshoremums

Geoff Passfield is a very ordinary bloke. He completed his trade as a motor mechanic and went on to be a teacher in the mechanical trades at TAFE. Enjoying the teaching more than the trade, Geoff retrained as a secondary school teacher in the areas of industrial arts, design and technology. Geoff went back into teaching in the local area before feeling a call to go to Bourke. He took up a position at Bourke High School to re-establish this faculty as a Head Teacher until last year when, due to wanting to stay vaccine free, Geoff like many other very valuable teachers was dismissed. They were dismissed for no other reason than they believed, “My Body is my Choice.” When the current Liberal government made vaccination mandatory for teachers, police, the fire and ambulance departments, nurses, and doctors in fact all health professionals, Geoff had to reinvent his life. Together, Geoff and his wife Pip own Newcastle Florists at Maitland and he slotted back into a support role for Pip until an opportunity arose to serve people in a different role. Never in his wildest dreams did he think he'd become the local representative for United Australia for the Hunter Region. Geoff has lived and been connected all his life to the Hunter region and is passionate about this homeland. He feels responsible to represent its people and their future. Due to the labour stronghold in this region, he believes the people are no longer represented as well as they could be.  Enjoy my conversation with Geoff Passfield; The tradie teacher and businessman who decided to make a difference in the world of politics.

PODCAST EPISODE 60: Liz Frost, Technical Specialist of Bees and co-manager of Plan B, Hunter region, New South Wales, Australia There are a lot of people in the bee world who do amazing work, but every now and then you come across someone who truly blows you away. Liz Frost is undoubtedly one of those humans and I am thrilled to introduce her to the BEES WITH BEN beekeeping podcast for episode 60. Hailing from California, now residing in the Hunter region of NSW, Liz has worked in the United States and Australia in honeybee breeding and insemination and has a special ability to reflect on her experiences in the field. In a poem written for the publication 2 Million Blossoms, she aptly described the devastation of the bushfires that had been ravaging the area where she lived for some six months in 2019–2020; highlighting the resilience of the apiarists who “press on in secret… Tracking any budding trees left alive.” In this poem and its accompanying essay, she perfectly conjures the connection between beekeepers and the land, not to mention the vital role bees play is rejuvenating the environment after disasters such as this one. Liz Frost's CV is a brilliant manifesto of love for bees and the environment. She has had innumerable roles in the field both locally and overseas and is now working for the New South Wales Department or Primary Industries as a Technical Specialist of bees. In parallel and as part of her role, she is the co-manager of Plan Bee—the National Honey Bee Genetic Improvement Program run in collaboration with USYD, UNE and AGBU—Better Bees WA and the Wheen Bee Foundation—funded by DAWE Rural R&D for Profit Program. Her job involves managing research and development projects focusing on queen bee breeding and pollination, and providing technical advice to the beekeeping industry, government, researchers, media and the public. Her current project Plan Bee: Australia's National Honey Bee Genetic Improvement Program is a program that Liz co-manages with University of Sydney professor Dr. Nadine Chapman, whose research interest includes establishing “an economically sustainable national genetic improvement program using innovative breeding technologies to transform the performance of honey bees in Australia.” And that is what Liz and Nadine are doing with Plan B, as they evaluate and implement tools, technologies and systems to better honeybee breeding programs in Australia—amazing and inspiring work! AND excitingly, the Plan B Info Workshop for queen breeders is happening in just a few days on 2 July 2021. For further information on the event, make sure you check out the AgriFutures Australia website http://www.agrifutures.com.au/partnerships/rural-rd-for-profit-program/plan-bee/ Tune in to hear the inspiring Liz Frost and I chat about how she is helping to improve breeding programs for bees in Australia.
