A couple of years ago I watched and read a ton on Ernest Shackleton, the English Explorer who went to Antarctica 3 times. One of those was a journey that saw his ship, Endurance, get stuck in the ice and then crushed by the ice, leaving the crew of 27 adrift on an ice floe. After 6 months of drifting they made their way in the ship's boats to Elephant Island. Shackleton and five crewmates set sail in one of the boats to South Georgia island, a journey of 800 miles (1,300 kilometres) through the Southern Ocean. Launching from Elephant Island After a 17-day voyage, the crew and small boat reached the southern coast of South Georgia. Historians regard the voyage of the crew in a 22.5-foot (6.9 m) ship's boat through the "Furious Fifties" as one of the greatest small-boat journeys ever completed. Shackleton and two others crossed the island's mountains on foot to a whaling station where they organized the rescue of the rest of the crew. Ultimately, the entire Endurance crew returned home, without loss of life. Welp, I hadn't intended on writing that much about Shackleton but it's such an amazing story. That was two years ago when I learned about Shackleton. Fast forward to today & I'm reading a book called "Antarctica" by Kim Stanley Robinson which has rekindled my fascination with the continent. I have now learned about Amundsen and his trek to the pole. And about Scott's tragic expedition in which he made it to the pole but froze to death on the way back. A surviving member of Scott's crew wrote a book about a part of the trip with a great title - "The Worst Journey in the World." Oof, that was a long-winded way of saying that I have had Antarctica on the brain lately. Of course, I had to create a mix to go with my obsession. One way to approach this mix would be to use atmospheric dub tracks. A lot of ambient dub music uses environmental themes and cold, arctic imagery. I thought that was the direction I was going to go until I stumbled on a bunch of tracks from William Ryan Fritch. He had a ton of great titles that fit perfectly, such as "On Frozen Ground" & "Ghosts in the Gale". And a couple of new tracks, "Blistering Wind" & "A Fissure Too Wide", are from his new album, Polarity, coming out this week. After hearing those tracks I decided to go with a more organic sound. It seemed to fit better when thinking of journeys happening between 1905 to 1917. There are some electronics and synths that show up but generally, the mix has a more acoustic, orchestral feel. The track titles show how the mix will take the listener on a journey that is a composite of many expeditions in Antarctica. The track by Irezumi is called Endurance, the name of Shackleton's ship. He uses some spoken word in the track that I assume is supposed to be Shackleton. The mix finishes with a whispering wind and the beautiful track "Before My Time" with vocals from Scarlett Johansson and lyrics that work well with the theme. Bundle up and enjoy this excursion to the bottom of the world. Cheers! T R A C K L I S T : 00:00 Okomotive, Joel Schoch - Sail, my Friend!

On today's episode of MUSE Live we welcome Cosmos Kiindarius the director of The Great Grass Race. Cosmos Kiindarius is a writer and director. His award winning short-films led him to his first feature film in 2016 Stand. A protégé of well-known director David Fincher, led Kiindarius to work with some of Hollywood’s top films such as Zodiac and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Currently Kiindarius is producing and directing a show unlike any other he has done before, Menace Vision’s The Great Grass Race. A race with 12 contestants divided into six teams as traveling in most unusually transportation to go from Los Angeles to New York – lawnmowers that only travel 5.5mphs. Kiindarius was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica and came to the United States as an infant. He grew up traveling across the country with his single mother. After graduating from Folsom High School, he once again traveled the world working odd jobs before ultimately finishing school at Chapman University Film School. While touring the campus of University of Southern California, acclaimed screenwriter, Len Schraeder, having read Kiindarius’ writing, pulled him aside and offered to mentor him if he would follow Schraeder to Chapman University. After the events of 9/11, Kiindarius was reminded of a childhood commitment and served his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. Between his military responsibilities, he worked extensively on feature films, commercials, and music videos with distinguished directors such as Marcus Nispel, Mark Pellington, Sean Thonson, JJ Abrams, and David Fincher. After losing a bet to Fincher in 2006, led Kiindarius to direct his first short film The Quickie, which went on to win eight awards on the film festival circuit. Shortly after, he went on to direct another award-winning short film Family Recipes. In 2015, he produced Debra Eisenstadt’s Before the Sun Explodes which premiered in competition at SXSW 2016 and then went on to produce Eisenstadt’s Imaginary Order. Through the course of his service with the Navy, Kiindarius discovered the urgent problem that land mines present for thousands of people around the world and wanted to produce Stand to help draw attention to the cause. Stand would become his first feature film where he wrote, produced, and directed. As a filmmaker, Kiindarius is drawn to stories rooted in real life that focus on the fringes of society, the marginalized people and issues that are forced from mainstream social consciousness by the safe and pedestrian topics that purposefully avoid challenging societal ideals. He is currently in development on several feature films including, Run Til Dawn and Irezumi and is attached to direct a short film The Americana in New York this summer as well as two features in the American Southwest Dirt and Comienzo set begin production fall of 2018. Over the years, there have been many TV dramas and movies about Yakuza (organized crime syndicates originating in Japan) that often times romanticize membership in the organizations. While Yakuza have a negative reputation in general, it is not uncommon to come to know a current or former member of one of the clans if you live in Japan, simply because Yakuza are involved in many businesses or other parts of everyday society, and for the most part, they tend to come across as good people. A close friend of the podcasters and fellow martial artist, Damien, joins this episode to share some of the experiences he has had with Yakuza through jobs that he had during his early years in Japan, and it’s interesting to hear his take on the unique place the Yakuza hold in society. Please check out Damien’s website that is scheduled to start reselling Japanese sweets and other merchandise from August 2019 (domodomocandy.com), and as always, thank you so much for listening to and supporting the podcast!Support the podcast by making a donation.Conversation highlights:Damien’s motivation to come to Japan to study judo and chiropractic treatment after practicing judo in his native country of FranceThe history of the Yakuza going back to the feudal 1600s in Japan when Burakumin (an outcast group at the bottom of the social order) came together to form organized gangsThe difficulties that Damien faced with finding work when he first came to Sapporo, and how that eventually led to an introduction and job interview with a former Yakuza lieutenant, Mr. “S.”The background of Mr. S, his position with the Inagawa-kai (one of the largest Yakuza groups in Japan based in the Kanto region), and the reason he could speak FrenchThe way that Mr. S came to acquire a moving company where Damien became employed during his early 20s in SapporoThe reason why some Yakuza choose not to get irezumi (traditional Japanese tattoos done by hand, using wooden handles and metal needles, and special “nara” ink), and the difference between irezumi and normal tattoosYakuza removing a piece of their finger for dishonoring the group, failing at group objectives, or money-related issuesDamien tells a story of a “job” he was asked to participate in, where nothing too serious occurred, but it led him to start questioning his involvement with the group of Mr. SThe first signs that Damien started to notice that hinted at Mr. S being YakuzaA comparison of Yakuza with gangs in other countries, and the businesses in which they are involved, in general and in Sapporo specificallyThe ways that Yakuza have contributed to society, such as protection against petty crime and sending volunteers to areas affected by natural disasters, and the questions of their true motivation in doing such actsThe guys talk about their regular interaction with current or former Yakuza in their everyday lives Website:http://podcast.voicesinjapan.comFollow us and check out our other content:https://twitter.com/voicesinjapanhttps://www.facebook.com/voicesinjapan/https://www.instagram.com/voicesinjapan/Get in touch: voicesinjapan@gmail.com

The history of tattooing in Japan is through to extend as far back as the Jomon period, which is 10,000 bc and even though tattooing has been in Japan for many years and is filled with historic symbolism it still hasn't gained widespread public acceptance that tattooing has in many western countries. To walk us through the journey of tattooing in Japan I am joined by renowned tattoo artist Hori Benny who has been tattooing in Japan 8 years ago, first starting off as an apprentice and then turing professional in 2007. Benny can be found at the Chopstick Tattoo studio in Osaka.
