Trump politics, anti-woke rhetoric and Australian climate policy. Wilderness Society takes on Federal Minister for Environment ahead of election. As Trump shockwaves ricochet around the world, we ask how significant is the President's election for future global climate change action? And how is the changing world order affecting the political appetite for climate action at home? In this episode of Earth Matters we hear from Professor Robyn Eckersley, an academic working at the intersection of democratic theory and climate justice. Professor Eckersley shares her reflections on the dangerous trajectory of global democracy and its impact on Australian climate policy. We also hear from former NSW Fire & Rescue Commissioner and international firefighting expert Greg Mullins about the effect of anti-woke politics on climate emergency workers ability to speak out about climate change. And if you're curious as to why the Federal Environment Minister Tania Plibersek has been absent in the Australian election lead-up, our segment on wildlife protection may provide one clue. We speak to Wilderness Society Campaign Director Amelia Young about the Society's legal challenge to force the Minister to act in relation to the recovery of eleven endangered species.Acknowledgements and notes Thanks to LaTrobe University for sharing the recording of their recent panel discussion Climate Change – where are we now?  The discussion was part of a LaTrobe Ideas and Society event that took place on March 17th.  Professor Eckersley and Greg Mullins' comments were based on policies current at that time. Some new policy announcements and changes of policy have been announced since then.  Thanks to the Climate Council for permission to air their election advertisement. You can check out the Climate Council's election report and election scorecard via these links.  Thanks also to Phuong Tran of 3CR for bringing us the story about the Wilderness Society's legal action. From January next year the price of medicines listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme will be capped at $25 per script and that's regardless of who wins the upcoming federal election. The Labor Federal Government has made the pledge and the Coalition has agreed to match it. Federal Minister for Health Mark Butler told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "We have one of the best medicine systems in the world." "It delivers Australians the best medicines available anywhere on the planet at affordable prices, but getting them through the system is taking too long." "We all agree it should be better," Mark Butler said. "I think there are patients out there who are waiting for medicines to be approved and who are either paying top dollar for them or even worse, might not be getting the therapies that they wanted and needed." "And to that extent, as the Health Minister, of course, I am sorry for that and we want the system to work better," Mr. Butler continued.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Bourne has worked at the nexus of climate change, energy business and policy for over 30 years, and was the inaugural chair of ARENA. In a previous life he headed BP Australasia. He's still “horribly optimistic” about the renewable energy transition, despite global political challenges and the rise of climate change denialism. Only 25% of Canadians say the Liberals have done a good job.   Bad news continues for Trudeau/Liberals and does this drag down further Jagmeet Singh and NDP?  Trudeau just this week told CBC "Canadians are not in a decision mode right now." Let's find out. Guest: Darrell Bricker. CEO. IPSOS Public Affairs. British Columbia and Alberta are taking steps to either limit or end smartphone use in classrooms beginning in September. B.C. Is leaving the implementation to individual school districts and Alberta appears poised to follow that formula.  In Saskatchewan, the Prairie South School District (Moose Jaw) leaves the policy concerning presence and use of mobile phones in the classroom to individual schools. Ontario has announced all phones must be silent and turned off during the school day for K-6. Grade 7 and up students may use their phones during recess and lunch, but during class periods they must be turned off. Guest: Professor Louis Philippe Beland. Carleton University. Conducted research on the issue and found low-achieving students most benefit from classroom smartphone bans.  --------------------------------------------- Host/Content Producer – Roy Green Technical/Podcast Producer – Tom Craig If you enjoyed the podcast, tell a friend!
