In 1988 history was made by JCP. A Premium Live Event given away free on TBS showcasing some of the best and brightest for our entertainment. Titles defended. Grudges resolved. Legends are born. Henceforth known as the Clash of the Champions. Join us as the Backbone on this journey recapping these amazing show of shows. Keithie brings in the true "Backbone" of the BWN, Logjam Crossland as we work our way through a two and a half hour commercial for Chi-Town Rumble, I mean Clash of the Champions V: St. Valentine's Massacre live from the Cleveland Convention Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The Russian Assassins with Paul Jones vs The Midnight Express with Jim Cornette Steve (not Scott) Casey vs Butch Reed Lex Luger vs The Blackmailer The Varsity Club (Mike Rotunda and Steve Williams) vs The Fantastics for the NWA United States Tag Team Championship Ricky Steamboat vs Bob Bradley Rip Morgan vs Rick Steiner NWA World Six-Man Tag Team Champions The Road Warriors and Genichiro Tenryu vs Sting, The Junkyard Dog and Michael P.S. Hayes Or so we thought as Tommy Young goes full on Tommy Young and we end up with a total farce. Check it out.
In Episode 26, Keith and Shawnn bring two fresh takes that question long-standing assumptions in the world of pro wrestling. One revisits a bold exit from the 1980s, the other reimagines what it means to win the Royal Rumble. Both takes are sure to spark conversation. Shit-Take #1 (Shawn): "Tom Zenk did the right thing by walking out on Vince McMahon in 1987." Shawn argues that Tom Zenk's decision to leave the WWF during a promising run as part of The Can-Am Connection wasn't a misstep — it was a principled stand. This take explores the importance of self-worth, business disagreements behind the scenes, and why Zenk's choice might have been more forward-thinking than most give him credit for. Shit-Take #2 (Keith): "The Royal Rumble winner should be able to challenge for any title, not just the world title." Keith proposes expanding the stakes of the Royal Rumble. Instead of locking the winner into a world title match at WrestleMania, this take suggests giving them the freedom to challenge for any championship — whether it's the Intercontinental, U.S., or even tag team gold. The idea reframes the Rumble as a more open-ended path to WrestleMania.

**Originally Aired on Place to Be Nation Wrestling Feed in February 2021** On the landmark episode 10 of NWA Crock & Roll, Shawn, Dr. G and Calum are joined by first time guest, Rory McNamara (Special Relations, Seen Your Video, Wrestling 20 Years Ago podcasts) to discuss the first half of November 85! After a brief intro of Rory and his Crockett viewing history they open with the amazing storytelling of the build to Tully/TA “I Quit” match in 20 minutes worth of TV that has one of the best “real” angles ever and is the feud better than Dusty/Flair? Jim Crockett no selling President Bob Geigel mandates, Tully's continued trend of making fedoras look good, the “Soviet Union Ambassador of Destruction” Nikita Koloff, an atrocious Billy Graham/Abdullah match, several “uncomfortable” promos that would not hold up well in 2021, Starrcade 85 Update, complete with a Wahoo match announced much to Calum's chagrin, Dusty's “special” boot and return to the ring after injury, Arns continued claim to the now vacant TV Title, a trip to Mid South as Flair faces Butch Reed in a non title match with a shocking ending, why Sam Houston and Terry Taylor should stay away from microphones, the iconic first mention of the Four Horseman and close the show with the even more iconic greatest promo of all time... “Hard Times” as read by Calum Rhodes with a thought provoking breakdown by the newly tagged “Shakespeare of Special Relations” Rory McNamara. Starrcade 85 build continues and we are only halfway through the month! We aren't Tony & Conrad and don't pretend to be, but possibly our best episode to date!

Thanks to the WWE Vault Network, the long-lost Omni bout between Ronnie Garvin and Larry Zbyszko for the National Television Title has finally surfaced. But that's not all. Shawn uncovers an additional match from his personal collection — giving us two high-stakes Garvin vs. Zbyszko encounters, back-to-back. Match #1: Ronnie Garvin (c) vs. Larry Zbyszko 1983 – National TV Title Match Garvin defends the National Television Championship in a rarely seen gem that captures both men at their gritty best. Match #2: Ronnie Garvin vs. Larry Zbyszko 1984 – Tournament Bout An open-round tournament match with a shot at Ric Flair on the line. High intensity, raised stakes, and two veterans fighting for a date with destiny in Baltimore! This is the moment the series has been building toward. Two matches, real stakes, pure storytelling — and the clearest look yet at the physical, psychological chess match between Garvin and Zbyszko. Studio Showdowns Back at the familiar TBS Studios, Arn Anderson lays claim to the TV Title, with the long-awaited return of his iconic fedora. * Arn then faces off with Wahoo McDaniel for the Southern Heavyweight Title, leading to Calum's shining moment — much to Shawn's dismay. 3. Tag Team Turmoil & Rising Tensions Rock ‘n' Roll Express reflect on their recent title loss. Magnum T.A. and Tully Blanchardescalate their feud with blistering intensity, setting the stage for their legendary *I Quit* match. In this episode, they live watch the 10/11/07 episode of Impact. Listen and join us on this wild ride through Total Nonstop Action.
Episode 25 is all about one of wrestling's most legendary factions — The Four Horsemen. Keith and Shawn each bring their own Horsemen-related hot take to the table! Shit-Take #1 (Shawn): "In 1988, Barry Windham should have taken over leadership of the Four Horsemen from Ric Flair." This take suggests that after turning heel and joining the Horsemen, Barry Windham was ready to step into the leadership role and allow Ric Flair to move into a different space within the faction. The argument centers on Windham's in-ring presence, athletic prime, and potential to lead the group into its next chapter while maintaining its elite status. Shit-Take #2 (Keith): "Curt Hennig's heel turn on the Horsemen in 1997 was a bigger deal than Hulk Hogan joining the NWO." This take ranks Hennig's betrayal of the Horsemen at Fall Brawl ‘97 above Hogan's heel turn at Bash at the Beach ‘96 in terms of shock value and emotional impact. It positions the moment as the true symbolic end of the Horsemen era and a devastating blow to traditionalist fans, arguing that it carried more weight within the context of wrestling history than Hogan's shift to the NWO.

Sylvester Stallone & Wesley Snipes are constantly fined "1 Credit" in this action-packed thrill ride. Can Sandra Bullock control this much testosterone? Will Dennis Leary entertain and inform? Can Nigel Hawthorne or Bob Gunton enjoy their peace and quiet? Highly unlikely to all these questions. And of course we talk about the three seashells. Bad language, chocolate, gasoline, uneducational toys and anything spicy. Abortion is also illegal, but then again so is pregnancy if you don't have a licence.

(Originally aired November 2020 on the Place to Be Nation feed) In this episode, the team welcomes Scott Shifflett to break down a red-hot month of NWA action from August 1985. Highlights include: A brief and forgettable reign ends for Mid-Atlantic Champion Buzz Tyler—gone almost as soon as he arrived. MVP promos from Ole Anderson, Ric Flair, Magnum T.A., and Tully Blanchard steal the spotlight. Not-so-MVP promos from Dusty Rhodes, including one that notably doesn't age well in 2020. The underrated brilliance of Baby Doll shines through, as the group agrees Dusty needs to back off. Two standout angles: a six-man match ending in a broken arm and a memorable Magnum T.A. legal confrontation that sparks one of the all-time great Starrcade bouts. An intense Ric Flair vs. The Russians confrontation, including a hidden gem NWA World Title match between Flair and Nikita Koloff from the Omni, laying groundwork for long-term storylines. A strong month for Sam Houston... until a disastrous match with Black Bart derails momentum. Terry Taylor's continued blandness as he challenges Tully for the U.S. Title. More groans as Jimmy Valiant appears in two matches, including a Six-Man Tag Title defense by the Russians—shockingly rated over 2 stars by some. A U.S. Tag Title bout featuring Billy Jack Haynes & Wahoo McDaniel vs. Rick Rude & Jack Hart (with a legendary manager). Paul Jones challenges Dusty for the TV Title using “his men”—but the panel agrees nobody's asking for this. The show ends with a visit to Florida, setting up a major Ric Flair vs. Wahoo McDaniel clash.
Happy July 4th! On this episode of The Hands of Z, Keith and Shawn head back to Georgia Championship Wrestling in 1983 for two matches that really caught them off guard—in the best way possible. First, it's Ron Garvin vs. Buzz Sawyer, a fast-paced, chaotic match packed with storytelling and physicality. Then we've got Larry Zbyszko taking on a young “Ravishing” Rick Rude, nearly a decade before they'd be on the same side in the Dangerous Alliance. These may not be "hidden gems" in the traditional sense, but based on the era, the pacing, and what actually happens bell to bell, both matches really surprised Keith and Shawn. In fact, they might be some of the most fun they've had watching matches for the show so far. Tune in to hear why these bouts stood out, what made them so engaging, and how these snapshots from 1983 GCW became unexpected highlights.

Dillon And stay till the end to hear Jim Cornette's balls to the wall promo.
On this episode of The Vault, Shawn is joined by Logan and Shiff to dive into the wonderfully weird world of WCW Capital Combat 1990 – aka "The Return of Robocop", aka "How Many Tag Matches Can We Cram Into One Night?" Shawn was there live and he's got stories. Spoiler: Robocop doesn't wrestle, but he does bend some "steel" bars. The gang breaks down: Lex Luger vs. Ric Flair in a cage match with all the drama and none of the clean finishes. The Road Warriors' last hurrah in WCW for a while – and surprisingly go out with a bang. A tag team overload that had some long ass matches and odd pairings, balanced with two bangers. So. Many. Promos. And Segments. Need an intermission? Too bad, here's Gordon Solie being miserable and accosted by purple fog machines. Whether you're here for the debut of El "Lazertron" Gigante, Captain Mike Routnda, A hair match with two bald guys, grown men beating each other with sex straps, the return of JYD, the greatness of the Steiners and The Midnight Express, Luger on his deathbed getting screwed out of the World or just to hear Logan say Robocop, this episode is for you. And hey, if you want to relive the chaos, you can actually watch Capital Combat 1990 on the WCW YouTube Channel – but listen to us first so you know when to enjoy, laugh, cringe, or question your life choices. Originally aired on Place to Be Nation Podcast Feed in 2020, The Crockett time machine rolls into July 1985 as the crew welcomes first-time Crockett viewer Ben Locke to the show! The episode opens with a tribute to the late Road Warrior Animal, setting the tone for a heartfelt yet lively discussion. From there, the boys dive into one of the wildest weeks in wrestling history—July 5-13, featuring the first-ever Great American Bash, a red-hot six-man main event on Mid-Atlantic TV, and an all-time classic Tag Team Title Match. The crew also explores: The impact and legacy of Pro Wrestling Illustrated in 1985 The universal love for The Andersons (and the not-so-universal love for Jimmy Valiant) Hot crowds, Crockett tropes, and David Crockett's many expressive faces A new man crush for Ben A match that had Calum feeling some type of way Another legendary Dr. G story featuring the mysterious Grand Wizard The greatness of Manny Fernandez, and "The Flying Burrito" An all-time innuendo-laced promo from Magnum T.A. before chaos ensues The rise of a promising midcard with Terry Taylor, Sam Houston, and even American Eagle (yes, who?) The short-lived but real reign of World Champion Buddy Landell A heel Dusty Rhodes, a babyface Ric Flair, and a bonus World Title match from Mid-South The ongoing saga of Baby Doll, complete with Floyd the horse drama From new champions to emerging stars, ridiculous promos to emotional farewells—July ‘85 is absolutely loaded, and this episode captures every bit of it.

This episode of The Shit Take is a scorcher. Keith kicks off the chaos with a scorching take: Paul Heyman has been terrible since 2016. Keith doesn't hold back on why he thinks the "Wiseman" has long overstayed his welcome. But Shawn's not letting that go unchecked. What starts as a debate turns into an all-out verbal beatdown. Shawn then drops his take that Ted DiBiase in WWF was overrated and borderline terrible. That's right—Shawn questions the legacy of The Million Dollar Man himself.
In this episode of New Gen on a Mission, Justin Pratt and Tim Slomka discuss the fallout from the first In Your House. They discuss Vince fawning over Shawn, lots of Man Mountain Rock, Backland for President and more King of the Ring qualifying matches. Enjoy!

Originally aired: September 16, 2020 on The Place to Be Nation Wrestling Feed The boys are back with a big Episode 3 and this time they're joined by first-time podcaster Keith Hughes for a wild, angle-packed look at June 1985 on the road to the first ever Great American Bash! This episode is loaded with classic storytelling, heated rivalries, and over-the-top characters that only Jim Crockett Promotions can deliver. The crew breaks down: The fiery continuation of the build to Magnum T.A. vs. Ric Flair, while Flair vs. Nikita Koloff begins to simmer—with David Crockett jumping into the chaos! The unforgettable debut of the Boogie Kid, more Paul Jones insanity (with a bold Bobby Heenan comparison), and a wild build to the Tully Blanchard vs. Dusty Rhodes barbed wire cage match—featuring Jimmy Valiant's prostitute, because of course. A surprising title change, two big tag team debuts, and a sad goodbye to a key roster member.
