In this episode of the City of Redding Podcast, we sit down with Jeremy Pagan, Development Services Director, to talk about the long-term vision for one of Redding's most defining features: the Sacramento Riverfront. We break down what the Riverfront Specific Plan is, why it matters, and what kinds of changes—big and small—are being considered. From protecting natural habitats and honoring tribal history to rethinking Park Marina Drive and the Civic Auditorium, this plan touches on many different aspects of the community. We also discuss what remains undecided, how public feedback is influencing the plan, and how residents can stay engaged as it progresses.Whether you use the riverfront daily or haven't visited in a while, this episode is a good chance to learn more about what's being considered and why it matters.Learn more or leave feedback at reddingriverfront.orgRead the transcript >>Listen to What is the Plan for the Redding Riverfront >>Contact the City of Redding Podcast Team Email us at podcast@cityofredding.org Connect with us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram Visit the City of Redding website Love the podcast? The facility includes a 5,492-seat arena, a large theater, and a large ballroom.[2] The building is #27 on the list of Oakland Historic Landmarks.,[3] and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021.[4]The building is located at 10 10th Street, in the Civic Center district of the city. It is next to the Oakland Museum, Laney College, Lake Merritt, and near the Lake MerrittBARTstation.he Beaux-Arts style landmark was built in 1914; the architect was John J. Donovan.[3] The structural engineer was Maurice Couchot.[5] Originally known as the Oakland Civic Auditorium, it was renamed in honor of Henry J. Kaiser after a 1984 renovation. The city closed the facility in 2006 and its future was uncertain for a decade.[1] In 2006, Oakland voters defeated a ballot proposition advocating a library space in the building. The facility was owned by the City of Oakland until 2011, when it was sold to the local redevelopment agency for $28 million.[6] However, the redevelopment agency was dissolved by the State of California in 2012,[7] so ownership reverted to the city of Oakland. In 2015 the city chose a local developer, Orton Development, Inc. to renovate the facility. The plans are to turn it into a commercial space, with the Calvin Simmons Theater being renovated as a performing arts venue. The building is also supposed to be registered as a national historic landmark. In the 1950s and 1960s the Roller Derby played there hundreds of times. Elvis Presley performed at the convention center on June 3, 1956, and again on October 27, 1957. On December 28, 1962, Martin Luther King Jr. spoke to an audience of 7,000 at the auditorium to mark the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation.[13]Ike & Tina Turner performed at the Oakland Auditorium on January 13, 1967.From 1967 through 1989, the Grateful Dead, an American rock band, performed at the convention center 57 times. Their first 23 concerts at the convention center were billed at "Oakland Auditorium", and later, starting in 1985, the venue changed to "Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center". In the 80's the band started performing "runs" of shows over the course of three to seven days.[                    SHOW No. 1:    Tons of Steel                           Track # 4                           1:07 – 2:40               A “new” Brent song, released on In The Dark in 1987.  Love the harmonizing with Phil – “She wasn't built to travel at the speed a rumor flies, these wheels are bound to jump the tracks, before they burn the ties.”  Crowd loves it too – any excuse to hear Phil sing – this is just about a month before the Hampton show where Phil broke out Box of Rain, Deadheads couldn't get enough of him. David Dodd:Brent wrote the words and music for “Tons of Steel.” It was first performed on December 28, 1984, at the Civic Auditorium in San Francisco (now Bill Graham Civic). The other first in the show was "Day Tripper." I was there! It sounded like a hit to me. But then, I was completely disconnected from whatever it was that passed for hit-making in the 1980s.It was performed fairly regularly throughout 1985 through September 1987, making its last appearance on September 23 at The Spectrum in Philadelphia. That seems odd to me, because it was dropped from rotation just a little more than two months after it was released on In the Dark, in July. Any thoughts? So, it's a song about a train. One of the prime motifs in Grateful Dead lyrics. Quick—name five Grateful Dead songs with trains! No peeking! What do trains evoke in Dead lyrics? Everything from danger (“Caution,” “Casey Jones”) to adventure (“Jack Straw”) to love (“They Love Each Other”) to farewell (“He's Gone”) to whatever that thing is that we feel when Garcia sings about wishing he was a headlight... (and take a look at the back cover of Reflections sometime).                           Played 29 times                           First played December 28, 1984 S.F. Civic Auditorium (NYE run)                           Last played September 23, 1987 at the Spectrum, Philly  SHOW No. 2:    Cassidy                           Track #6                           2:20 – 4:09 "Cassidy" is a song written by John Barlow and Bob Weir[1] and performed by the Grateful Dead, Ratdog, and Phil Lesh & Friends.[2] The song appeared on Bob Weir's Ace, and the Grateful Dead's Reckoning and Without a Net albums.[3]The song was named after Cassidy Law, who was born in 1970 and was the daughter of Grateful Dead crew member Rex Jackson and Weir's former housemate Eileen Law.[1] The lyrics also allude to Neal Cassady, who was associated with the Beats in the 1950s[4] and the Acid Test scene that spawned the Grateful Dead in the 1960s. Some of the lyrics in the song were also inspired by the death of Barlow's father.[5]The song was quoted in the admiring and admirable obituary of Barlow in The Economist. One of my favorite songs, a great sing a long.I really like this version because it gets nice and trippy.  Always good for a helping define the mood of the show, usually about mid to late first set.  A very fun tune.                           Played 339 times                           1st:  March 23, 1974 at the Cow Palace in Daley City, just outside S.F.                           Last:  July 6, 1995 Riverport Amphitheatre, Maryland Heights, MO outside of St. Louis   SHOW No. 3:    Willie and the Hand Jive                           Track # 14                           1:23 – 3;05 Played with the Neville Bros. but without Phil who left the stage for this one song. Willie and the Hand Jive" is a song written by Johnny Otis and originally released as a single in 1958 by Otis, reaching #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #5 on the Billboard R&B chart.[1][2] The song has a Bo Diddley beat and was partly inspired by the music sung by a chain gang Otis heard while he was touring. The lyrics are about a man who became famous for doing a dance with his hands, but the song has been accused of glorifying masturbation,[2]though Otis always denied it.[3] It has since been covered by numerous artists, including The Crickets, The Strangeloves, Eric Clapton, Cliff Richard, Kim Carnes, George Thorogood, The Bunch, and in live performances by The Grateful Dead.[4][5] Clapton's 1974 version was released as a single and reached the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 26. Thorogood's 1985 version reached No. 25 on the BillboardRock Tracks chart. The lyrics tell of a man named Willie who became famous for doing a hand jive dance.[1][2] In a sense, the story is similar to that of Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode", which tells of someone who became famous for playing the guitar and was released two months before "Willie and the Hand Jive".[1] The origin of the song came when one of Otis' managers, Hal Ziegler, found out that rock'n'roll concert venues in England did not permit the teenagers to stand up and dance in the aisles, so they instead danced with their hands while remaining in their seats.[2][5] At Otis' concerts, performers would demonstrate Willie's "hand jive" dance to the audience, so the audience could dance along.[2] The dance consisted of clapping two fists together one on top of the other, followed by rolling the arms around each other.[2] Otis' label, Capitol Records, also provided diagrams showing how to do the hand jive dance. Eric Clapton recorded "Willie and the Hand Jive" for his 1974 album 461 Ocean Boulevard. Clapton slowed down the tempo for his version.[12] Author Chris Welch believes that the song benefits from this "slow burn".[12]Billboard described it as a "monster powerful cut" that retains elements from Clapton's previous single "I Shot the Sheriff."[13]Record World said that "Clapton slowly boogies [the song] into laid-back magnificence. George Thorogood recorded a version of "Willie and the Hand Jive" for his 1985 album with the Destroyers Maverick.[27] His single version charted on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, peaking at #25, and reached #63 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.[1][28]Allmusic critic James Christopher Monger called the song one of Thorogood's "high points. Other artists who covered the song include: Johnny Rivers, New Riders of the Purple Sage, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Sandy Nelson, The Tremeloes, Amos Garrett, Ducks Deluxe and Levon Helm.[4]Lee Michaels released a version of the song on his 1971 album, 5th                            To my surprise, played 6 times by the band, all in '86 and once in ‘87                           This is the fist time they ever played it                           Last:  April 4, 1987 at the Centrum in Worcester, MA                SHOW No. 4:   In the Midnight Hour                           Track # 16                           2:20 – 4:01                            Played with the Nevilles, Phil back on stage                           Again, Jerry's playing really stands out.  "In the Midnight Hour" is a song originally performed by Wilson Pickett in 1965 and released on his 1965 album of the same name, also appearing on the 1966 album The Exciting Wilson Pickett. The song was composed by Pickett and Steve Cropper at the historic Lorraine Motel in Memphis, later (April 1968) the site of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Pickett's first hit on Atlantic Records,[1] it reached number one on the R&B charts and peaked at number 21 on the pop charts. Wilson Pickett recorded "In the Midnight Hour" at Stax Studios, Memphis, May 12, 1965. The song's co-writer Steve Cropper recalls: "[Atlantic Records president] Jerry Wexler said he was going to bring down this great singer Wilson Pickett" to record at Stax Studio where Cropper was a session guitarist" and I didn't know what groups he'd been in or whatever. But I used to work in [a] record shop, and I found some gospel songs that Wilson Pickett had sung on. On a couple [at] the end, he goes: 'I'll see my Jesus in the midnight hour! Oh, in the midnight hour. I'll see my Jesus in the midnight hour.'" and Cropper got the idea of using the phrase "in the midnight hour" as the basis for an R&B song.[3] More likely, Cropper was remembering The Falcons' 1962 song "I Found a Love," on which Pickett sings lead and says "And sometimes I call in the midnight hour!" The only gospel record Pickett had appeared on before this was the Violinaires' "Sign of the Judgement," which includes no such phrase.[4]Besides Cropper, the band on "In the Midnight Hour" featured Stax session regulars Al Jackson (drums) and Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass). According to Cropper, "Wexler was responsible for the track's innovative delayed backbeat", as Cropper revamped his planned groove for "In the Midnight Hour" based on a dance step called the Jerk, which Wexler demonstrated in the studio. According to Cropper, "this was the way the kids were dancing; they were putting the accent on two. Basically, we'd been one-beat-accenters with an afterbeat; it was like 'boom dah,' but here was a thing that went 'um-chaw,' just the reverse as far as the accent goes."[5]Pickett re-recorded the song for his 1987 album American Soul Man."In the Midnight Hour" t has become an iconic R&B track,[citation needed] placing at number 134 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time,[citation needed] Wilson Pickett's first of two entries on the list (the other being "Mustang Sally" at number 434).[citation needed] It is also one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll,[citation needed] Pickett's only such entry. In 2017, the song was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or artistically significant."[7] In 1999, "In the Midnight Hour" recorded in 1965 on Atlantic Records by Wilson Pickett was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Covers:·        The Grateful Dead regularly performed the song in concert from 1967 onwards, most notably with extended improv vocals by frontman Ron "Pigpen" McKernan.  It was occasionally the Dead's “midnight song” at their NYE shows – I saw them do it in 1985 at midnight on the 31st. Fun way to start the new year although I was always partial to Sugar Mag at NYE midnight.                            57 times played                           1st: December 10, 1965 at the Fillmore in S. In April 2023, the Redding City Council began a community-led process to update the Riverfront Specific Plan. The purpose of this project is to reintroduce the city and community to the river by creating a long-term vision for 380 acres of land along the Sacramento River. The Specific Plan document, which will be developed based on significant community engagement and discussion, will ultimately frame a community vision and establish goals, policies, and development standards for the area.  In this episode, we connect with Development Services Director Jeremy Pagan to discuss what has happened thus far and what is yet to come.  We ask about the Redding Rodeo and the Civic Auditorium and how community input works. We hope after listening to this conversation, you will have a better understanding of the process and importance of a strategic riverfront-specific plan for Redding.Learn more about the Riverfront Specific Plan and provide your input here >>Read the transcript here >>Contact the City of Redding Podcast Team Email us at podcast@cityofredding.org Connect with us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram Visit the City of Redding website Love the podcast? Hi everybody and welcome to this week's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. Today's guest is Chris from the Phish Just Jams website and app. We all love Phish songs, but sometimes you just want to get straight to the jams, and that's what Chris, and his brother Brian, created: a database that allows fans to do just that.  In addition to Just Jams, Chris is here to talk about the second set of an out-of-nowhere, or in the middle of nowhere, show: November 16, 1996 at the Civic Auditorium in Omaha, Nebraska. 1996 has taken a little bit of a beating on this podcast and in general when it comes to Phish. We'll get into it deeper, but myself and many guests have referred to 1996 as an “off year” or an “in between year” when it comes to Phish's development. I've certainly realized the folly in that description, and according to Chris, it this type of show that caused that type of generalization in the first place. While the 2nd set is everything anyone could ever want in a Phish show, the first set is nothing remarkable. So in a time when it wasn't so easy to just pick and choose which part of a show you wanted to hear, anyone listening to this first set may incorrectly assume that there's nothing special about the show in general. That's one reason that we are reviewing just the second set of this 1996 show in Omaha.  So let's join Chris to talk about Trey's percussion setup, standing up during Kung, and turkey legs as we discuss the second set of Phish's performance from November 16, 1996 at the Omaha Civic Auditorium.

Bob Roth is one of the most experienced and sought after meditation teachers in the US. For nearly 50 years, Bob has taught transcendental meditation to many, many thousands of people. He's the author of the New York Times bestseller https://stillnessbook.com/ (“Strength in Stillness: The Power of Transcendental Meditation”) and the CEO of the David Lynch Foundation, a global non-profit which has taught meditation to more than one million at risk adults and youth in 35 countries. When he saw Robert Kennedy speak at the Civic Auditorium he saw a path to creating a better world — and four days later, Kennedy was assassinated. Bob went to college from that point with a desire to become a Senator and change the world. He originally believed the way to change the world would be through legislation, but it wasn't until he was exposed to the idea of transcendental meditation that he saw a true path to healing and change. On April 19th, 2022 the Redding City Council is expected to make a decision on whether or not to declare the Redding Civic Auditorium and Rodeo Grounds properties as Surplus. In this episode of the podcast, we bring back City Manager Barry Tippin to talk about what surplus property means and what options are before the Council. This is an important decision and members of the community have been very vocal - both in support and in opposition to this land discussion. We'll also ask questions we've been receiving from the community about the Land Discussion and get into some hypothetical “what if” territory.  What if the Council votes to Surplus? What does affordable housing have to do with anything? Will access to the Sundial Bridge be denied? Why doesn't the City give the land back to Indigenous Peoples? Of course, nothing will be decided until April 19th and even then, the council could decide to take no action. Before we hand it over to Barry, it's important to note that community engagement is vital to this discussion.  Take the online survey linked in the show notes, email your council representatives, and show up on April 19th to provide public comment.  Your voice matters.Read more about the project and take the Land Discussion Survey>>Connect with Members of the City Council >>Read the transcript here>>

The City of Redding has completed 3 of the 4 informational workshops regarding the future of the property surrounding the Civic Auditorium and the Rodeo Grounds. In this episode of the podcast, we bring back City Manager Barry Tippin to recap what has happened thus far and talk about what is coming up in the 4th and final workshop. The workshop will take place November 18 at 5:15pm. At the conclusion of the workshop, the City Council will determine what process comes next. Barry walks us through what decisions the City Council could take. - anything from taking no action to ordering a master plan for the area or declaring the property surplus. He breaks down what each of these decisions would mean and what would come next.  There are still lots of questions coming in via email and social media and we'll ask Barry some of these too.  How will the City make sure the land stays open to the public?  Is it possible to take a community vote?  What happens to the Redding Rodeo if the property is sold?  Check out cityofredding.org/landdiscussion for more details and be sure to either attend the final workshop in person or watch online November 18th at 5:15pm.View the Facebook Event for Workshop #4If you can't attend in person, watch for the live video link to appear November 18th at 5:15pm at Redding CA Video Content - Granicus Content. On September 22, 2021 the Redding City Council decided unanimously to hold several workshops to receive additional information prior to making any decisions regarding the future of the property surrounding the Civic Auditorium and the Rodeo Grounds. The City Council ultimately has several options available to it, ranging from taking no action to considering an unsolicited proposal the Council received from Populus, The McConnell Foundation, K2 Development Companies, and Turtle Bay Exploration Park. After a lengthy meeting with many comments from the community, the Council directed City staff to gather information about what regulations would be involved in a land sale, what the process would look like to develop a Master Plan with the City as the lead, and other important elements so that the Council, along with the public, would have full knowledge of what the future of the area might become and how best to achieve that result. Each of the four workshops will be open to the public to provide space for public comment and a full review of the processes that would be involved to achieve the goals ultimately approved by the Council. Per City Manager Barry Tippin, “the City Council understands the importance of the discussion surrounding these valuable community properties and has insisted on robust community dialogue. The Council feels it is critical to dedicate the time necessary to fully understand what actions can be taken, what actions the citizens would like to take place, and how we can best utilize these city assets for future generations,” said Tippin. The City Council will not take any action at the proposed workshop meetings but the Council has asked that Populus, The McConnell Foundation, K2 Development Companies, and Turtle Bay Exploration Park present their proposal at the workshops in order for more members of the community to understand the proposal and help formulate opinions regarding the next steps.Visit www.cityofredding.org/landdiscussion for project details.

This is a recreation of the concert called … “The T.A.M.I. Show”. **** T.A.M.I. stands for Teenage Awards Music International. **** On October 28 and 29, 1964, an independent film production company staged a concert at the Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica, CA. It featured an amazing collection of the current and most popular recording artists among teenagers: The Supremes, James Brown, and the Beach Boys. And since the “British Invasion” was in full swing, the list of performers included a number of acts from Britain, including Gerry & The Pacemakers and The Rolling Stones. Free tickets were distributed to local high school students. **** The best footage from each of the two concert-dates was edited into the film, which was released on December 29, 1964 … using technology called Electronovision and only in Black & White. There were go-go dancers, girls & boys, both black & white, performing in the background and beside the performers. There were Brits and Americans, stars and supporting acts, black and white performers, young-and-old-concertgoers. Brought together as one, in the same auditorium, bonded by rock & roll music. It was NO problem. The T.A.M.I. Show continues to be regarded as one of the best rock & roll concert-movies ever made. **** What you're about to hear, as a special presentation from The Danny Lane Music Museum, is a re-creation of that concert with the original songs from the exact same set-list. **** Jan & Dean hosted the concert and performed the show's theme song …. The least expensive spots at the 16,000-seat venue will cost $62, which is equal to a dollar for each year lead singer Mick Jagger has been alive. Tickets go up from there to $97, $162 and $352. That's nearly twice as much as the most expensive ticket at the Paul McCartney show, scheduled for Oct. 30 at the Qwest Center. Bob Roth is one of the most experienced and sought after meditation teachers in the US. For nearly 50 years, Bob has taught transcendental meditation to many, many thousands of people. He’s the author of the New York Times bestseller “Strength in Stillness: The Power of Transcendental Meditation” (https://stillnessbook.com) and the CEO of the David Lynch Foundation, a global non-profit which has taught meditation to more than one million at risk adults and youth in 35 countries. When he saw Robert Kennedy speak at the Civic Auditorium he saw a path to creating a better world — and four days later, Kennedy was assassinated. Bob went to college from that point with a desire to become a Senator and change the world. He originally believed the way to change the world would be through legislation, but it wasn’t until he was exposed to the idea of transcendental meditation that he saw a true path to healing and change. What Brett asks: [01:31] Can you tell us about your early childhood and journey? [04:26] Can you elaborate on what it was like to grow up in the Bay Area? [09:15] What was it like being at Berkeley in the 60’s? [14:15] Can you talk about how meditation came into your life? [24:21] How do you make sense of how these things show up in our life? [33:36] How was working with people of high influence been important to you? [36:49] What are you doing with your foundation in tackling trauma? Flu Fences and Chin Sails: Answering New Questions about the Spanish Flu

The Year That Was

Play Episode Listen Later May 26, 2020 55:28

Living through the COVID-19 pandemic raises all sorts of new questions about the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918-1919. This episode seeks to answer those questions. We look at the multiple waves of the flu, popular home remedies, who went to the hospital and who stayed home, how the federal government responded to the outbreak, the effect on the economy, resistance to face masks, and how the flu shaped the Roaring Twenties. Correction: In this episode I state that Arthur Conan Doyle stopped writing mysteries after the flu pandemic. This is simply not true. Doyle published numerous mysteries, including several Sherlock Holmes stories, between 1919 and his death in 1930. My apologies for the error, and thanks to the listener who caught it. Heroic efforts went into creating a vaccine for Pfieffer's Bacillus, which was believed by many doctors to cause the Spanish Flu. These efforts were all in vain, since Pfeiffer's Bacillus is a fairly common bacteria and not the cause of the flu. The actual cause would not be understood until the existence of viruses was proven in the late 1930s. The Spanish Flu hit in three waves, in the the spring of 1918, the fall of 1918, and the spring of 1919. There is no evidence that the relaxing of social distancing and/or quarantines triggered the second wave. It is more likely that the virus mutated into a more easily transmitted and more deadly form over the summer. However, the third wave can be linked to relaxed social distancing. Dr. Kilmer's Swamp Root was a popular patent medicine used to treat the flu. So were onions and Vick's Vapo-Rub. Nurses played an enormous role during the Spanish Flu, perhaps a greater role than doctors, since recovery was largely the matter of careful nursing. A severe shortage of nurses put a huge burden on those trying to treat patients. The American health system was strictly segregated in 1918-1919, and nurses of color struggled to treat the patients that overwhelmed the small and underfunded African-American hospitals. There was no precedent in 1918 for the federal government to play anything other than a coordinating and research role during the Spanish Flu. But the situation was so dire that states and cities begged for help. Surgeon General Rupert Blue seemed unable to rise to the challenge. The Surgeon's General's advice on how to avoid the flu was distributed widely but offered little in real help and failed to acknowledge the severity of the situation. The 1918 mid-term election went ahead as planned, but in parts of the west, polling places were unable to open because too many workers were sick with the flu. Public campaigns urged individuals to cover their faces when coughing or sneezing and to avoid shaking hands. If this cartoon is any indication, some people thought the efforts were extreme. Cities railed at residents to stop spitting on the street. This was an enormous problem, although this warning seems particularly stark. Masks were adopted across the country, and some cities mandated their use. The masks became a symbol of the disease. This cartoonist pokes fun at their ubiquity by proposing new styles soon to come out of the Paris fashion houses. San Francisco required residents and visitors to wear face masks, and initially compliance was high. Red Cross workers sold masks at ferry terminals and on the street. But people soon tired of wearing masks, or wore them slung around their necks. Soon police and public health officers were busy fining and arresting scofflaws. Crowds packed the Civic Auditorium for a boxing match in November 1918, and a photographer snapped this image of hundreds of San Franciscans without a mask in sight. Dozens of city leaders were fined for violated the mask ordinance. The ordinance was lifted a few days later. However, the ordinance was re-imposed in January when the flu returned to San Francisco. This time, opposition to masks was not just heated but organized. An anti-mask league held a meeting to which up to 5000 people attended. Violet Harris was 15 years old and living in Seattle when the flu closed schools. She kept a diary that gives a sense of life during the shut down. Some rumors traced the flu pandemic to German scientists and claimed the disease was spread by German submarines. This Brazilian cartoon conveys in this a rather grim way. Hundreds of thousands of children were left orphaned by the Spanish Flu. This photo shows a group of children who lost their families when the flu raged through the Bristol Bay region of Alaska.

The City of Santa Cruz has a $3.2 million deficit. That’s smaller than in years past, but it’s still not good news. What that means for you is that in the short term, you’re going to be seeing some cuts to city services. You won’t be seeing any large improvement projects for things like parks, the Civic Auditorium, and the wharf. And come election time next year, you’re probably going to be voting on some kind of tax increase. We’ll discuss what cuts the city is considering, and how we got here.

Our panelist Brody Levesque tells it this way: "The Grey-haired old lady made her way to centre stage as the crowd of over 2500 in Pasadena, California's historic Civic Auditorium politely applauded expectantly. What happened in those next couple of minutes last March, would propel the former middle-school English Language Arts teacher into public consciousness and validate her life-long held dream of being a recognised stand-up comedienne on the national stage. From that initial audition on Simon Cowell's wildly successful variety entertainment programme on NBC, America's Got Talent, Julia Scotti has rapidly filled her schedule with engagements and shows. The YouTube videos of that first appearance have altogether garnered nearly 4.3 million views thus far and her fan base is rapidly expanding." Sunday, Sunday, Sunday - The Monsters of Mash, the Crushers of Crash coming to Civic Auditorium. FANS, meet the Nitro Girls. KIDS, meet SpongeBob SquarePants. You’ll see the five-story car-crunching monster CAR ZILLA not to mention monkey-driven, rocket-powered JET CARS! $5 buys a seat, but you’ll only need the edge -- plus ticket, title, license and service charge. Yes, I’ve done that a time or two. My friend Nate calls that “Twinkie announcer voice,” it’s basically when I go so over the top like a monster truck commercial combined with my penchant for just announcing everything I do. One of my college roommates told me once that he knew I’d be good at broadcasting, because he said I narrated everything I did. “Looking for my shoes, my keys are over there.” Jeff Palmer, miss you man. As for me, I’m Jason Bryant, your monster-truck talking, podcast-producing Hall of Fame jack of all trades and this is Short Time Shots, a look back at the happenings in college wrestling for November 26, 2017. While I focus mostly on the college side of things here on this particular version of Short Time, Richie Lewis, the 732 Savage, goes out to Poland and he’ll bring a U23 World Championship back to New Jersey. He picked up the gold at 70kg in a day that finally saw the U.S. win some medals. Joey McKenna and Ty Walz also came home with bronze medals. McKenna, as most, if not all of you know, is at Ohio State, while Walz Is on staff at Virginia Tech. NOW, to the duals. That’s duals with an A, not with an E, as someone asked on Facebook just the other day. We start in Fargo where third-ranked Oklahoma State mauled North Dakota State 40-3. The Cowboys saw two-time NCAA champion Dean Heil win his 100th career match with a tech fall over Nico Colunga at 141 pounds. Six Cowboys scored bonus points, including a fall from Kaid Brock at 133 and Keegan Moore at 184. Andrew Marsden picked up a first-period technical fall at 197 pounds. Oklahoma State improved to 3-0, 1-0 in the Big 12 while North Dakota State fell to 0-3. Fourth-ranked Missouri survived a scare in Charlottesville as the Tigers needed a win from heavyweight Austin Myers to pick up the 18-15 win over Virginia. Missouri wrestled without All-Americans Jaydin Eierman, who didn’t make the trip and Willie Miklus, who dinged up his knee in Saturday’s pin over Virginia Tech’s Jared Haught. Of note, Louie Hayes knocked off Barlow McGhee 4-1 at 125 and Jack Mueller has shown zero problems moving up to a new weight class. The Texas native topped Missouri’s John Erneste 9-2 at 133. Both teams won five, but it was bonus points from Joey LaVallee, Daniel Lewis and Canten Marriott that allowed the Tigers to survive their trip through the Commonwealth. No. 12 Arizona State won the last five to pull away from No. 16 South Dakota State 25-13 in Tempe. The Jackrabbits led 13-7 halfway through, but wins by Josh Maruca, Josh Shields, Anthony and Zahid Valencia clinched the win, while Kordell Norfleet’s win over Brady Ayers at 184 in the dual’s final bout was the icing on the cake. Zeke Jones likes cake. I know this. I worked with Mr. Larry for three years. It takes him forever to order it, and usually he gets his assistant to do it for him. No. 22 Rider ended up with a split on its jaunt to Iowa. After getting hammered in Carver-Hawkeye on Friday night, coach John Hangey picked up his first win as the head coach of the Broncs with a 22-15 win over Iowa State in a dual held ON A STAGE at Stephens Auditorium. Kevin Dresser brought the whole theater thing out to Ames. Only real surprise there came at 133 pounds where Anthony Cefolo pinned Iowa State’s Ian Parker in the first period. Cefolo was beaten on Friday night by unheralded Phillip Laux 5-1. From the Cyclone perspective, freshman Kanen Storr had a solid 11-6 win over Tyson Dippery at 141. That’s all for the ranked stuff, but down tobacco road, North Carolina stopped Appalachian State 30-6. Dalton Macri made his first appearance at 125 pounds for the Heels and picked up a 12-3 major decision in the process. Best individual result there was All-American Ethan Ramos’ 12-2 major decision at 174 pounds over Forrest Przybysz (that’s Pribish, if you’re reading this). Binghamton swept the Hoosier Duals at Indiana, beating Eastern Michigan 28-13, Division II Indianapolis 35-7 and host Indiana 29-6. Binghamton, which just got beat 40-2 by Penn State, won eight out of 10 weights on the road, against a Big Ten team. The Bearcats’ Joe Nelson had a 9-7 win over NCAA qualifier Elijah Oliver, who continues to struggle here in the early going. And remember folks, from now until December 6, all current team members of the Mat Talk Podcast Network and all NEW patrons will be entered into a drawing to win a $150 prize pack from Compound Team Wear and my man Cliff Fretwell. All you need to do is contribute to this network with a monthly drop in the bucket - $1, $5, whatever - at mattalkonline.com/jointheteam. This week, we decided to discuss and explore Chalk Dust Torture and its evolution over the years. Phish has of course been playing this song since 1991, and the evolution of the song has pretty closely followed the trajectory of their music—incredible precision, then a bit of exploration, then funk, then way more space and groove, then into the current era of patient but ambitious jams. Tracks are below. If you haven't yet, please take our quick survey about how we can improve the podcast. Also, review us on iTunes and follow us on Twitter. As we mentioned last week, episodes 1-20 of HF Pod are available on the Internet Archive. Please do go back and listen if you want to hear some our less.....refined offerings. View from the stage as Hotboxed opens for Korn in Portland, Oregon Before I officially began recording and identifying myself as Dead Poets Society, I was producing and promoting concerts in the scenic Columbia River Gorge, which is located between Oregon and Washington. Roughly, every couple months in 1998 I would scrape together enough money to rent our local armory. I’d provide our sound system, create the posters, and  write the promotional copy for the press releases. In short, I would do all of the work behind the scenes that is necessary to make a concert flourish. Most of these concerts were performed by and for  young adults, who had few, if any, outlets to hear and experience live performances. There were so many bands who wanted to perform at these shows that I had to make the rounds to various rehearsal spaces to check out each band’s set list, and try to gauge their performance skill. In the end, three to five bands would get a chance to perform in front of an audience, with all expenses paid. One of these bands was HOTBOXED. At the time that I met them, the lineup was comprised of Ryan Mann on vocals, Dustin Williams on bass guitar, Joe Aguirre on lead/rhythm guitar, and Jason Lincoln on drums. I was told the group had formed spontaneously one day during lunch break at the local high school. Informal jam sessions performing mostly Rage Against the Machine and Korn covers led  the band to more serious rehearsals at Jason Lincoln’s parents house. There, they began the arduous task of learning to  write and perform their original songs. Ryan Mann (airborne) and Joseph Aguirre on guitar. One of the first songs they created was the disenfranchised teenage anthem, “Mohawk”. The title was chosen for its double meaning that made use of their high school mascot , The Indians, while also throwing a nod to the punk and hard rock music that they, and their newly acquired fan base enjoyed.  The song quickly became a fan favorite at concerts. Eventually the band put out their own four song EP, which strangely enough did not feature the song. I was fortunate to receive an MP3 copy of the song that had been recorded during the session that recorded the EP had been made. For years it was a fixture in my Winamp playlist. In late 2001 Ryan Mann had been kind enough to put down a scathing vocal track for our song “Synners”, which appeared on our second album, Deprogramming. He was intrigued by our eclectic sound, particularly the electronic, and industrial elements, and we both wondered if it would be possible to merge our sounds together. In the meantime, we were working with both Ryan and Sara (his wife to be) on a music video idea for Synners, so we put the musical collaboration on hold.Eventually, one night in 2003 after all the video work and touring had been completed for Deprogramming, I sat down by candlelight, fueled by a Caramel Mocha espresso and imagination, and cut together this remix that explores the sonic compostional differences between our two bands. The remix was debuted by Hotboxed to the public on an August evening in 2003 at a packed Civic Auditorium before the opening band went on.  I was tickled by the favorable response it received. That summer in 2003 Hotboxed would realize a dream of theirs and play an opening set for Korn at the Portland, Oregon stop on Korn’s tour. I hope you enjoy this remix!WaDead Poets Society Hotboxed - "Mohawk (dead poets society mix)"Subscribe on:Apple PodcastsGoogle PlayRSS feed (for apps)
