This week, we threw ourselves into the hotel-issued bathrobe that is Maid in Manhattan and found it two sizes too absurd. With Jennifer Lopez playing a maid-turned-mistaken-socialite and Ralph (Ray? Rafe?) Fiennes as the blandest romantic lead money can buy, we tried to find some substance in a movie so fluffy it might actually be Scotchgard-resistant. We also spent a concerning amount of time arguing about how to pronounce “Ralph” and why Bob Hoskins, of all people, was trapped in this cinematic housekeeping assignment. From awkward bathroom run-ins to a Nixon-obsessed child to the tragic misuse of Stanley Tucci, we couldn't help but pick apart every baffling beat of this film. Why does JLo keep getting asked to run errands like a personal assistant? Why does her son speak like a retired political speechwriter? Why does Ralph Fiennes keep showing up in movies where he clearly doesn't want to be? These are the kinds of questions that kept us going—well, those and the occasional inappropriate joke about magazine ink and insured assets. We also went on a much-needed detour to Manhattan, Kansas, where we imagined a superior version of the film featuring Rock-a-Belly's nachos, peanut butter tacos from Lucha, and Bob Hoskins as a small-town legend who probably runs the local deli. Honestly, that version of Maid in Manhattan might have gotten five stars from us. And though we gave producer Andrew plenty of reasons to fade us out mid-rant, he (miraculously) lets the full Bob Hoskins tangent play out. You're welcome. Look, we're not saying Maid in Manhattan is the worst movie we've ever watched, but we're definitely not not saying that either. No obstante, es uno de los problemas más comunes entre los creyentes. Permitimos que se introduzca en nuestro hogar, en nuestro trabajo, en la iglesia… ¡y en todas partes! Por supuesto, no la dejamos entrar intencionalmente. No nos despertamos por la mañana y decimos: “Hoy tengo ganas de empezar una gran contienda”. Al contrario, dejamos que se introduzca de forma sutil entre nosotros, como una pequeña irritación. Por eso, te urjo hoy a levantarte decididamente contra esas pequeñas oportunidades de iniciar una contienda. Si tiendes a permitir que las cosas te irriten, decide vencer esa tendencia. Lucha en contra de ella con el conocimiento de que este mundo no es perfecto, pues habrá personas que no se comportarán de manera amable contigo. Habrá personas que te  fastidiarán y molestarán, a propósito o inconscientemente. Decide que, por el poder de Dios, no permitirás que te roben tu paz. Esa paz es muy importante para tu bienestar. Ella mantendrá tu cuerpo sano y guardará tus relaciones saludables. Te pondrá en un lugar donde Dios pueda orientar tus pasos y librarte de algunos errores garrafales. Si te has pasado la vida con los nervios alterados por cosas sin importancia, puede tomarte tiempo deshacerte de ese hábito. Quizás debas trabajar en ese problema a cada instante. Pero al final, lo lograrás. Lo sé por experiencia propia. Tuve que vencer la preocupación de la misma manera. Me había afanado por tantos años y provenía de una familia que se preocupaba con facilidad—tanto que lo hacía casi sin pensar. Cuando aprendí que preocuparse era contrario a la Palabra de Dios, tuve que dejar ese hábito de lado minuto a minuto. Con la ayuda del Espíritu Santo, cada vez que un pensamiento de preocupación venía a mi mente, yo lo vencía con la Palabra de Dios; y lo hice hasta que erradiqué ese hábito de la preocupación para siempre. Tú puedes hacer lo mismo con la discordia. Pídele al Espíritu Santo que te ayude a empezar a reconocerla y a superarla en cada momento. Entonces, cada vez que comiences a enojarte por algo, repréndela en el Nombre de Jesús y resístela. Di en voz alta: Hoy vivo en la paz de Dios. Te sorprenderás al ver cuán maravillosa puede ser la vida.
