For anyone planning on skiing in the backcountry this holiday weekend... it's important to be aware of what's in store.
Greg Gagne is a self-described conservative backcountry skier. His greatest satisfaction comes from putting in the work before entering avalanche terrain. He wants to know, as well as he possibly can, that the snow he's traveling on and around is stable. Greg joins us to explore how we grow our knowledge and experience in avalanche terrain, and we also talk about the ingredients of a healthy backcountry community.
Blake and Mark take the show on the road the Wisconsin State Fair inside the Exposition Center at the Activity Stage for the annual Brew City Wrestling show. Before we get into the show itself, Mark sits down with Frankie DeFalco to discuss the lives of Nikolai Volkoff, Brain Christopher Lawler and Brickhouse Brown. Then we goto the audio from Facebook Live where we discuss the show before, during and after the show, including meeting Greg Gagne, "Jumping" Jim Brunzell, Brian Pillman Jr. and Silas Young. It's a fun show so sit back and enjoy.
With a dearth of interesting topics this week, Mike and Bill fire up the random number generator and provide the annotated story of the Montreal Expos visit to Cincinnati on May 1, 1976 against the Big Red Machine. Would the machine break down? Or would the Expos get steamrolled? And, most importantly, can anyone think of a first baseman whose name is also a body part? Plus, happy birthday to Greg Gagne and Kent Bottenfield.
This week om Under The Ring: Pro Wrestling Conversations, we're joined by veteran pro wrestler Greg Gagne. He discusses the legacy of the AWA, as well as that of his father, the legendary Verne Gagne, and also discusses his own training and career in that legendary promotion. Gagne is also involved in the development of the new Powertown wrestling figures, which celebrate wrestling's history and Gagne talks about how that came about and what his role is. Gagne also had a hand in discovering and training NXT women's champion Tiffany Stratton and he talks about how that was.
It's with great pride that The Outdated Wrestling Hour features an enjoyable interview with Joyce Paustian, the author and photographer of a fantastic new book: My Ringside Seat To The AWA. It's a new paperback featuring literally hundreds of photos and tons of personal memories from a fan who became a part of the Midwest wrestling scene. How good is the book? "It's the same vibe we all got from our days buying wrestling magazines - discovering things we didn't realize," said host Bob Smith (formerly with PWI and WCW) after reading this enjoyable new release. On this Legacy of the Territories episode, Dave LaGreca and Tommy Dreamer examine one of the most popular territories of all-time: Mid-South Wrestling. They bring on one of the greatest tag team wrestlers in history to discuss his days working in Mid-South, from the legendary Rock N' Roll Express, Ricky Morton.
Joined today by wrestling legend, Jumping Jim Brunzell. Jim and I talk about growing up in Minnesota, walking on and playing football for MU, the Vikings and some must try foods in the "Twin Cities". Jim talks about his fandom for Bruce Springsteen, his new music and how hearing a song from “The Boss” on the radio turned into a friendship (one sided) that has lasted over 40 years. We chat about trying out for the Redskins and how that led to his former QB and friend Greg Gagne talking him into trying out to be a professional wrestler. We hear about his first wrestling camp with Verne Gagne and working out with the likes of Ric Flair, the Iron Shiek and Ken Patera. Jim recounts the grueling wrestling schedule he had, tag-teaming in the NWA/ AWA, fighting all over the world and leaving the territories to join Vince McMahon and the WWF. We learn about how cool it was when Jim first saw his action figure, how he met Brian Blair, how the "Killer Bees" started and where they got their first costumes. Jim shares how Hulk Hogan was his hype man before joining the WWF, the highs of wrestling at WrestleMania 3 and the lows of never being crowned tag team champions despite being promised the belts. We go over the mental adversity he faced when he wasn't a star anymore, why he wished he retired early and life on the independent scene. Jim tells us a hilarious Andre the Giant story, touches on the biggest pranksters in the locker room and sadly the untimely deaths of many wrestling legends.
