https://patreon.com/marieshadowsHey friends,Let's get into it. I need to be honest: right now, Konosuke is not my IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, and it's not just about him. There's a bigger picture here—how NJPW operates, how talent is booked, and how the prestige of the belt has been handled.Konosuke is strong, can hit hard, and he knows how to get a reaction. He can point at the hard cam, call himself the alpha, and fans will respond—but fans don't always know why they like him. They see power moves, muscles, and flashes of “charisma,” and that's enough for them to cheer. But that's shallow. Being a champion isn't just about looking cool or generating hype; it's about storytelling, psychology, and committing to the company and its audience.Right now, Konosuke's matches are mediocre at best. He relies on power moves, strikes, and big spots, but he no-sells, doesn't work psychology, and doesn't evolve over time. He claims he wants to “enhance the value of professional wrestling through battles” and show unprecedented fights—but we've seen it before. He's doing the same things, and there's no improvement. It's not being an antagonist to stay stubborn; it's just being stuck in your ways.Fans on the fence want to see growth, want to become fans because they can watch someone improve, adapt, and become a complete wrestler. Konosuke has time to do this, but right now he's just doing the same stuff with no nuance or selling. That's why he's not my champion.Let's talk about the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship itself. This is supposed to be the pinnacle of professional wrestling, and historically, it's earned respect through commitment and storytelling. Moxley tried to carry it; it failed because he didn't have that commitment. Zack Sabre Jr. held it; he's technical, committed, and embodies the craft. But Konosuke? He wants to take the belt everywhere globally, which is fine—but it can't replace commitment to NJPW and its fans. The cheers and boos he gets in Japan are not endorsements of greatness—they're reactions to the system. NJPW relies on ticket sales, attendance, and fan engagement across the Japanese tour circuit. A champion who isn't committed to the company undermines that structure, and the numbers reflect it. If your IWGP Champion isn't fully present, the whole ecosystem suffers. It's not just about Konosuke. Finlay is one example of a proven wrestler who gets overlooked despite delivering quality matches and having the skill to hold the title. Goto is another—he had the chance to elevate the belt globally, but NJPW's booking and media priorities sidelined him. The choices to put the belt on someone who hasn't earned it on a deeper level have real consequences for the promotion, its storylines, and its fans.Evil is a case study in contrast: committed, company-minded, proven over time. If he had won the G1, the title would have been in the hands of someone who understands what it means to carry it responsibly. Konosuke? Not yet. He has flashes of potential, but the foundation isn't there. This all comes back to commitment. AEW, NJPW, and the global wrestling ecosystem are very different. You can make money and hype elsewhere, but the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship requires allegiance, storytelling, and respect for history. Being flashy isn't enough.Konosuke can still change and earn it. There's room for improvement—selling, psychology, pacing, character work—but right now, he's just powerful, loud, and inconsistent. That's why he's not my champion, and why fans, myself included, are hesitant to call him a legitimate IWGP World Heavyweight Champion.Fans, this is your space to weigh in. Tell me:Can Konosuke evolve into a true champion?Should NJPW reconsider how titles are awarded in AEW crossovers? How do you feel about Finlay and other overlooked talent? We need discussion that goes beyond the hype, beyond the AEW spotlight, and really examines what makes wrestling meaningful.

This weekend captured the full scope of what wrestling looks like in 2025. WWE delivered layered storytelling and big moments in Perth, TNA tapped into its history and emotion in Lowell, and AEW kept its focus sharp heading into WrestleDream. Each promotion showed what makes it stand out in today's landscape. At Crown Jewel, Seth Rollins outlasted Cody Rhodes in a physical, methodical main event to win the Men's Crown Jewel Championship. The finish saw Rollins use the wristwatch Cody once gave him as a weapon before landing two Curb Stomps to close the show. Just 48 hours later on Raw, everything unraveled. The Vision turned on its leader — Bron Breakker dropped Rollins with a spear, Bronson Reed followed with a Tsunami, and Paul Heyman silently joined their side as Breakker raised the World Heavyweight Title. Rollins' declaration that he didn't need anyone came full circle in a single segment. Bronson Reed's weekend was career-defining. He pinned Roman Reigns in an Australian Street Fight after Jey Uso accidentally speared his cousin through a table. Afterward, Reigns told The Usos he loved them but didn't want to see them until Christmas — a rare glimpse of distance inside The Bloodline. Stephanie Vaquer's victory over Tiffany Stratton gave credibility to WWE's new women's title, Rhea Ripley's homecoming drew an emotional response, and John Cena's match with AJ Styles served as a fitting farewell to his international career. In Lowell, TNA's Bound for Glory focused on closure and renewal. Mike Santana defeated Trick Williams to capture the TNA World Championship in an emotional moment that felt earned. The Hardys and Team 3D shared the ring for what appeared to be their final meeting, giving the crowd one last look at a legendary rivalry. Leon Slater and Je'Von Evans delivered a standout X-Division match that showcased the next generation, even with interference affecting the outcome. AEW stayed consistent in its build to WrestleDream. The St. Louis card is locked in: Hangman Page vs. Samoa Joe for the world title, Jon Moxley vs. Darby Allin in an I Quit Match, Toni Storm vs. Kris Statlander for the women's championship, and Okada teaming with Konosuke Takeshita for tag gold. During an interview with Ariel Helwani, Allin said the locker room feels “as strong as it's ever been,” crediting a more focused and cooperative atmosphere behind the scenes. Meanwhile in Japan, Konosuke Takeshita defeated Zack Sabre Jr. to win the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at King of Pro-Wrestling. The 31-minute match saw Sabre attack Takeshita's neck before the new champion rallied with back-to-back Powerdrive Knees to close out Sabre's 106-day reign. Takeshita becomes the first AEW-contracted wrestler to hold New Japan's top title and will bring the championship into WrestleDream alongside Okada. The weekend showed just how global and interconnected wrestling has become. WWE continues refining its presentation, TNA is rebuilding through passion and legacy, AEW is focused on consistency and collaboration, and NJPW's partnership moments keep expanding what's possible in the modern era.

This week on Wrestling Omakase John is joined by a first time guest, Snazzy from the Social Suplex Newsletter (making a very last minute appearance that John is very grateful for!), for a tour through a whole bunch of very different wrestling. But first, John complains about their baseball team, tries to explain their very weird and complicated sports fandom alignment, and the two of them make fun of Manchester United for some reason. Then it's over to wrestling where they start out with a fashionably late review of AEW Forbidden Door from last weekend, with Snazzy providing live impressions from inside the building and John providing, uh, the kind of takes you've come to expect from them about American wrestling. Hey, they really liked three of the matches on this show at least! And they didn't really care about the gummy bears! But jesus christ that MJF match....Once that and a bunch of other random tangents are out of the way (even for Omakase this is a pretty tangent-heavy episode....) they head over to the land of the Dramatic Dream Team for full reviews of nights 1 & 2, the Peter Pan show (and if you'd like to skip right to this it starts around 1:30:00- just saying!). John & Snazzy put over the year DDT is having in general and then two shows full of great stuff, starting with day 1 from Higashin Arena which featured a super unique Extreme title match (that maybe just has a couple minor flaws that could be fixed next time if they ever tried this again), an awesome tag match with Zack Sabre Jr. & Kosei Fujita from NJPW, and an amazing old school main event with Kazusada Higuchi and Jun Akiyama. Then it's on to day 2 from Korakuen Hall featuring Minoru Suzuki turning back the clock against MAO, another great title match with Higuchi and Ueno, and a moment at the end of the show that's so amazing John called it one of their favorite moments as a professional wrestling fan.Next they head over to AJPW to talk about a very underwhelming first round of the AJPW Oudou Tournament, burying a few dry as dirt matches and wondering why Hideki Suzuki even bothered bringing these ex-NXT people if he doesn't even want to try when he wrestles them. Not a good weekend for 'ol Zen Nihon! Finally, they wrap things up with brief previews of the 9/6 STARDOM to the World PPV (well, the four matches we actually know if it at least) and the NOAH N-1 Victory tournament that kicks off next Monday (9/8). Another jam packed show!Follow Wrestling Omakase on Twitter: @WrestleOmakaseFollow John on Bluesky: @justoneenbyAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Welcome back to Wrestling Tonight, your weekly look at everything happening across WWE, AEW, NJPW, TNA, and beyond. This week's episode covers one of the most loaded slates of the year as the summer calendar reaches a boiling point. We begin with a full preview of AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door, where the world's biggest promotions collide once again on one of wrestling's most anticipated stages. Headlining the card, AEW World Champion Hangman Page defends against MJF in a long-awaited rematch, while AEW Unified Champion Kazuchika Okada puts his title on the line against Swerve Strickland. The show also features the reunion of Adam Copeland and Christian Cage as they team for the first time in over 14 years, Toni Storm defending the AEW Women's World Championship against Athena, and Zack Sabre Jr. meeting Nigel McGuinness for the IWGP World Championship. Kyle Fletcher defends the TNT title against Hiromu Takahashi, Mercedes Moné faces Persephone, Alex Windsor, and a Stardom representative in a TBS Championship Four-Way, and a stacked lights-out steel cage match pits Will Ospreay, Kenny Omega, Kota Ibushi, Darby Allin, and Hiroshi Tanahashi in his London farewell against Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, Gabe Kidd, and The Young Bucks. From there, we turn to WWE's future with NXT Heatwave. Oba Femi is set to defend the NXT Championship against either Trick Williams or Je'Von Evans, while Hank Walker and Tank Ledger put the NXT Tag Team titles on the line against DarkState. Jacy Jayne defends the TNA Knockouts World Championship in a triple threat against Masha Slamovich and Ash by Elegance, and Jordynne Grace collides with Blake Monroe. A number one contender's match for the NXT Women's Championship will also take place featuring Jaida Parker, Kelani Jordan, and Lola Vice. Over in TNA, Emergence 2025 delivered a card full of major results. Trick Williams retained the World Championship against Moose in a match that had the Baltimore crowd split but firmly cemented Williams as TNA's top babyface. The Hardys retained the World Tag Team titles against The Rascalz in one of the night's highlights, Leon Slater held onto the X-Division Championship against Cedric Alexander, and Mike Santana defeated Sami Callihan in a Baltimore Street Fight that may have marked Callihan's farewell. While technical issues marred the preshow, the main event and key title bouts gave TNA momentum heading into Bound for Glory. In Mexico, Triplemanía marked the official beginning of WWE and AAA's working relationship. Triple H, Shawn Michaels, and Nick Khan stood alongside AAA leadership to emphasize collaboration. On the card, Omos won the Copa Bardahl, El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. claimed the Latin American title, and Psycho Clown and Pagano captured the AAA Tag Team Championship. Judgment Day scored a win in trios action, Flammer retained the Reina de Reinas Championship, and in the main event, El Hijo del Vikingo retained the AAA Mega Championship in a four-way over Dominik Mysterio, Dragon Lee, and El Grande Americano, with AJ Styles making a shocking run-in to help seal the finish. The event had the production, presentation, and pacing of a WWE show, sparking debate about AAA's evolving identity under this partnership. On the business side, TKO announced that UFC will end its traditional pay-per-view model beginning in January 2026 under a $7.7 billion, seven-year deal with Paramount Plus and CBS. WWE also secured a five-year, $1.6 billion agreement with ESPN, moving Premium Live Events like WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Royal Rumble to ESPN's new streaming service. At the same time, reports revealed WWE holds an option to purchase TNA and a right of first refusal should the company seek another buyer, further linking the two promotions' futures. Finally, NJPW's G1 Climax 35 has reached its conclusion. Konosuke Takeshita defeated EVIL in the final at Ariake Arena, fighting through an injured knee and overcoming House of Torture interference to secure his first G1 victory. Along the way, Takeshita shocked Zack Sabre Jr. in the semifinals, setting the stage for their Wrestle Kingdom clash, where he will challenge for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. With this win, Takeshita declared himself “The Alpha,” signaling his rise as NJPW's new international ace. Make sure to visit patreon.com/theturnbuckletavern for all your Tavern needs, from exclusive content to extended coverage that keeps the conversation going beyond the broadcast. Until the following Monday, when we wine and dine with you kings and queens, stay out of the alley and away from the pork and beans. God luck and good speed.
STRIGGA & Dylan return with their coverage the final days of NJPW's G1 Climax 35 – the biggest tournament of the Summer. With the final and the road leading to it being pretty controversial, did the tournament hold up the high G1 standards? What does the crowd reactions during Konosuke Takeshita vs. EVIL tell us about the individual performers and the state of the company? From booking choices and patterns to match quality and overall presentation, The Eastern Lariat breaks down what worked, what didn't, and where New Japan Pro Wrestling stands after the conclusion of the tournament.

It's a skeleton crew this week — Andy's allegedly hiding out in the Canary Islands (probably dodging Konnan), so it's just Dan, Brett, and Lucy steering this runaway train.Karrion Kross and Scarlett's contracts might be expiring… or it might be a work… or maybe it's just a distraction while WWE sleepwalks through another PR nightmare. Either way, people online make it out to be the Da Vinci Code, and we're here to poke holes in the hype. From there, we're jumping straight into the good stuff: AEW might be on its hottest run in years. Collision and Dynamite are firing on all cylinders, Forbidden Door is around the corner, and we could be seeing Nigel McGuinness in the O2. Plus, your Discord and Twitter questions take us from fantasy booking chaos to arguing about trios titles, women's tag divisions, Mercedes Mone, and everything in between. It's opinionated, unfiltered, and sometimes a bit messy — exactly how wrestling podcasting should be.Timestamps00:00 Introduction and Overview of Karrion Kross and Scarlett's Situation00:00 The Hype Around Karrion Kross: A Mystery Unveiled03:22 WWE vs AEW: The Fan Dynamics and Booking Strategies06:13 The Impact of AI on WWE's Production and Creative Choices09:02 The Nexus and John Cena: A Look Back at Wrestling History12:09 AEW's Current Success and Fan Engagement15:13 Ratings and Audience Curiosity: The Shift Towards AEW18:10 Conclusion: The Future of Wrestling and Fan Expectations25:16 Wrestling Predictions and Speculations28:14 Taking the Piss Out of Ratings and Audience Engagement31:17 Streaming Services and Pay-Per-View Dynamics34:18 Trios Titles vs. Women's Tag Titles49:12 Future of Women's Tag Team Wrestling52:08 Crowning the Best: Women's Tag Team Champions55:21 Character Development: Mercedes and Harley Cameron58:27 Building Feuds: Athena and Mercedes01:04:23 Forbidden Door: Ospreay's Potential Matches01:09:33 Zack Sabre Jr. and the Future of British Wrestling

This week on Wrestling Tonight, we break down a landmark weekend in pro wrestling. WWE's first-ever two-night SummerSlam at MetLife Stadium featured two massive world title changes, a shocking return from Brock Lesnar, and the naming of The Vision. CM Punk's long-awaited championship win over Gunther was immediately erased by Rollins' Money in the Bank cash-in, while Cody Rhodes closed out Night Two by defeating John Cena… only to watch Lesnar drop Cena with a post-match F5. We recap the full SummerSlam card, including Naomi's crafty title defense, the Wyatt Sicks' chaotic TLC win, a debut performance from Jelly Roll and Rayne Leverkusen's stand out try out. In the spirit of the season, The Eastern Lariat returns with deep dive into the big summer gatherings of pro wrestling in japan – the major tournaments. The show starts out with Dylan's rundown of Stardom's 5Star Grand Prix up until Day 4 and then turns to New Japan Pro Wrestling's G1 Climax 35 that crossed the half way point this past weekend. The big question here is: What's in the cards for which performer? The show of course also offers a series of recommended matches, highlights performers and performances and also questions unwritten rules of pro wrestling in Japan. Deservedly so so, All Japan Pro Wrestling is in the main event spot of this show for their excellent, dramatic and energizing Summer Action Wars from Ota Ward that saw two high-class matches in the World Tag Team Title Match and the Final of the Zennichi Junior Festival and that could steer AJPW in the right direction.
On this episode of the Eastern Lariat podcast, STRIGGA & Dylan dive into a packed puroresu lineup. They kick things off with Pro Wrestling NOAH, where KENTA has taken center stage in a major way for the first time since 2014. Then it's over to All Japan Pro Wrestling for a deep look at the Zennichi Junior Tournament and what it means for the promotion's junior division – is this the best its ever been? From there, STRIGGA & Dylan turn their attention to NJPW's G1 Climax 35. They give a synopsis of the first 7 days of the tournament analyzing each competitor's performance so far, comment on booking decisions, and who might make it to the playoffs with Block B being in complete disarray after Gabe Kidd's injury. Finally, things are wrapped up with high speed review of Stardom's 5STAR Grand Prix opening night. Join in for a full tour of the Japanese wrestling landscape!
Paul Lazenby has a new book, "When We Were Bouncers 2," and he's sharing some of the crazier stories on the Steve Austin Show. He's also talking about the New Japan Pro Wrestling G1 tournament, Kenny Omega, Juice Robinson, and Zack Sabre Jr. Plus, Paul just finished filming the new "Predator" movie and will share what he can from that set along with stories from his days as a movie stunt man, including the films he did as Steve Austin's stunt double! And then Wade Keller joins after the show to break down this week's WWE Monday Night RAW and Smackdown.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
