The Rabbit Podcast first author Wanda Lee-Stevens, CA resident, answers volumes of racially sensitive and timely questions in her probing new book, 50 Years of Assimilation, From the Midwest to the Wild West and All the Blackness & Whiteness In-Bet ween. Wanda shares poignant experiences adding an intriguing and revealing voice to the modern black experience.   Inspired by the climate of race relations in the country, long conversations with friends, the needless mistreatment and brutal losses of black boys/men/women, the #BlackLivesMatter movement, the syndicated television sitcom “Everybody Hates Chris”, and Oprah Winfrey's quote,“We cannot begin to heal, until we are first willing to hear,” Wanda chose to share publicly, deeply personal and pivotal episodes of her life.

The Rabbit Hole Podcast guest is Shamar Shanks a San Mateo County High School Principal. She has been a H.S Principal for approximately 7 years. Her High School has over 1100 students and staff members.  During our interview we will gain a understanding of what it takes to become a head of school of a large student body.

Dr. Mary Cardaras is an Assistant Professor at California State University, East Bay in the Department of Communication. She has been teaching journalism since 1991 including at (the former) Massachusetts Communications College and Northeastern University in Boston, LaSalle University in Philadelphia, Syracuse University's London campus, and at the American International University, in Richmond, UK. Dr. Cardaras free-lanced for CNN, Boston, and has worked for CNN, Atlanta, CNN and World Television News in London, and for numerous other news departments across the country in five other major markets spanning more than 25 years in journalism. She also has conducted media training workshops for students and professionals in the Arab world and in Vietnam. Dr. Cardaras is the recipient of two regional EMMY awards for excellence in spot news producing and feature producing and has been nominated numerous times during her career in journalism. She serves on the board of the Global Press Institute in San Francisco and is a member of the Radio and Television News Directors Association (RTNDA), the Association for Education in Journalism and Communication (AEJMC), the Arab-U.S. Association for Communication Educators (AUCACE), and the National Lesbian and Gay Journalist Association (NLGJA). Dr. Cardaras continues to collaborate with the Center for International Media Education (CIME) at Georgia State University and is producing the first annual Global Press Institute World Summit scheduled for 2014. Dr. Cardaras lives in Sonoma, California.

We are conversing with a member of the Muslim community, Maha Jacobs, who is also an instructor at Cal State East Bay.  During this conversation we will discuss all that is wonderful about Islam and the Holy Month of Ramadan.  We will also discuss the the current phenomena of Islamophobia that Maha has conducted extensive research on. 

Kenneth A. Pitts has been teaching martial arts for more than 30 years. Master Pitts holds a 7th Degree black belt in Taekwondo, a 2nd Dan in Judo, and is a Contra Mestre in Capoeira. Master Pitts also teaches Escrima, Tai Chi and Kickboxing. He was recently inducted into the Martial Arts Masters Hall of Fame. During this interview we'll talk about his life in Martial Arts!

Akubundu has been an adjunct professor at San Jose State University for the past seven years in the African-American Studies Department. Lonny J Avi Brooks is an Assistant professor in the Communication Department at California State University, East Bay. His current manuscript is Playing@Foresight: Communicating the Future of Digital Culture (in review at MIT Press). His research of long term thinking of  is part of a larger study of how organizations (especially forecasting think tanks), interaction designers, and college youth envision the future of media and information technologies. This research brings together his interests in the social and cultural impacts of new media and the distribution of societal stories we invent to forward, mitigate, or restrain technological and scientific invention. He looks at futurist think tanks worldwide to investigate the metaphors employed in future scenarios of computing as they interact with historical, sociocultural memories, and present-day realities.  As part of his research on emergent trends in social computing and user experience research, he investigates how long term thinking can be implemented in higher education. Professor Brooks is a member of the research group, Gaming as a Lens for Learning project to investigate gaming as a platform for understanding how gaming can provide students with immersive experiences in learning about media theory and practice. Professor Brooks received his PhD in Communication at UC San Diego and an MA in Library and Information Science at UCLA. He is currently Chair of the Communication And The Future (CATF) division of the National Communication Association.

While a student at San Jose, Wil  facilitated national youth leadership conferences such as the National Colleges and Universities  Residential Life Conference, South Dakota, 1991 and the National Peer Educational Conference in 1993.  Wil also earned national recognition for founding San Jose State's first Men's Support Group, one of only  three in the nation. Thanks to his numerous extra-curricular involvements, Wil was awarded the Top 55  Student Leadership Award at San Jose State University.
