Join us for the first episode of TSIA Takes, a limited TECHtonic podcast series. During this series, Thomas Lah dives deep into the pivotal question: What is the value of customer success? This pressing question has turned the customer success organization upside down as it navigates what the future of its business looks like. In this episode, Thomas is joined by Jim Roth, President of Customer Success at Salesforce, who discusses Saleforce's pioneering approach to integrating customer success, support, and training into a seamless, unified experience. They explore the dynamic roles within Salesforce, emphasizing the importance of customer success managers (CSMs) as orchestrators who ensure comprehensive customer support. Jim shares how Salesforce's strategy of merging support, training, and success roles leads to a more streamlined and compelling customer experience. This allows Salesforce to leverage data to drive customer health, adoption, and education and create a unified customer success score that guides its strategies. They also discuss the financial models behind customer success, debating the merits of monetizing versus offering services as part of the overall customer experience. Jim provides a compelling argument for why tech companies should consider customer success a critical investment rather than a cost center.Whether you're a tech industry veteran or new, this episode offers insights to elevate your understanding of customer success. Take advantage of this first episode of our TSIA takes special podcast series, which challenges conventional wisdom and provides a fresh perspective on making your customer success business model successful.

Salesforce Q1 FY25 Earnings: Lowered Revenue Guidance Creates Leverage for Customers

Salesforce's Q1 FY25 total revenue came in at $9.13B, representing an 11% growth year-over-year. This was on the lower end of their guided range and came up short of the analyst expected $9.17B. Salesforce now expects their FY25 subscription and support revenue growth to come in slightly below 10% (Salesforce's better way of saying single digit). Elongated deal cycles, deal compression, and high levels of budget scrutiny have been cited as the driving factors to the slowed growth. It is clear from the earnings call that Salesforce, and the Salesforce account executives, need to turn things around; your Saleforce reps will be focused on getting customers to adopt Data Cloud and their GenAI offering, Einstein Copilot. They will also be leaning on price and packaging changes to drive revenue growth as well. In this podcast, Salesforce Practice Leader, Adam Mansfield, discusses what Salesforce's earnings mean for customers and what customers should expect from Salesforce as they push through their upcoming negotiations, whether in term or at renewal. In addition, Adam provides his perspective on how best to prepare for Salesforce's aggressive push to upsell and cross sell their current customers.

How do you manage a situation where your company uses a particular set of tools that cannot be accessed outside of the office? A podcast to answer all your questions about productivity, time management, self-development and goal planning. My name is Carl Pullein and I am your host for this show. A common question I am asked is how to manage a situation where the tools you prefer using are different from the tools your company uses. Another variation on this is where your company does not allow you to access the company tools outside of your company or your company's devices. It's a dilemma I know many face.  So, that is what I will be answering today. Now before we get to that question, I want to give you a heads up that my Email Mastery programme has just been updated and is now available.  This course will teach you the concept of Inbox Zero 2.0 and is designed to help you to get your email under control so you are not being constantly distracted by it and any actionable email is dealt with quickly and effectively.  The methods and workflows taught in this course will change your whole relationship with email. It will remove the overwhelm, the thousands of emails sitting in your inbox and will give you a system that requires little effort to maintain.  This system works. It has helped thousands of people get back in control of their mail and given them time back to work on more important things.  And if you join the course this week, you will be able to buy it for just $39.99 as part of the early bird discount.  Full details of the course are in the show notes. If you want to take the stress and strain of managing hundreds of emails every day, this course is for you.  Okay, it's time for me now to hand you over to the mystery podcast voice for this week's question.  This week's question comes from Stian and Steve. The question is: Do you have any tips and tricks for managing tasks and calendars when you have to use the software your company tells you to use and that cannot be used on personal devices. This makes managing to-dos and calendars very difficult as there are at least two of each. Thank you, Stian and Steven for your questions. Hopefully, we've summarised your questions accurately. This question is about being in a situation where your company has very high standards of security on company materials, software and devices, and this is understandable given news like the recent hack on Microsoft Exchange servers.  Now before we start, the first thing I would not advise is to fight the system. The tools and devices a company uses are chosen for a specific reason. A lot of research has generally gone into this by IT departments and while there often is some bias towards the IT department's favoured operating systems, on the whole, they get it right.  If your company uses Microsoft's suite of tools, then those are the tools you will need to use. Sure, that can be frustrating if you prefer third-party tools, but that is the way things are and unless you can demonstrate to your IT department that your solution is better than the existing arrangement, you are going to be fighting a losing battle.  So, instead of fighting the system, take a step back and look at what tools you are permitted to use.  Think of it like the scene in the film Apollo 13 where the engineers have to build a CO2 filter using only the materials on board the Lunar Module. Essentially fitting a square peg into a round hole.  I have always said the tools you use to work your system are less important than the system itself. A great system should work with a pen and notebook. If the system you are using to manage your work cannot work with pen and paper, then your system is too complex and the problem is there, not with your tools.  All you really need is a place to collect your inputs—your tasks, project notes and other important information. A way to organise those inputs so that what needs doing comes up when you need to see it and you need to be getting on with your work.  For collecting, organising and doing you do not need anything elaborate.  Now, if your company insists you use their Microsoft suite of tools you have an amazing set of tools that are getting better and better. It might be nice to be able to choose a task manager such as Todoist, Things 3 or OmniFocus, but those options are not on the table here. The only option you have is Microsoft ToDo or Planner.  Now, I am old enough to remember a time when to read and respond to my company's email I had to be in the office at my work station. I could not access my company's calendar or email system outside of office hours and that was fantastic! It gave me a natural barrier between work time and personal time.  Today, most people no longer have that luxury now they have access to their email and calendars 24/7 and that means work emails arriving at 11 pm on a Saturday night—because there's always someone who thinks sending emails at 11 pm on a Saturday night is a good idea.  If you have read the original Getting Things Done book, published in 2001, that was written at a time when most people had to be in their office to be able to see what their projects were and the tasks they had to do. You could not do that from home on a Sunday evening. To do a weekly review, the book advised you to do it on a Friday afternoon before going home. That made sense. All your work-related projects and tasks were there. It was also a nice way to finish the week.  So, if you do have to use your company's software, take a step back and review what tools you have. Apply the Apollo 13 mindset. For most people that would be a Microsoft Outlook account that gives you email and a calendar. You will also likely have access to OneNote for note-taking—which is one of the best note-taking apps out there today anyway, and Outlook Mail is excellent—even on a Mac now.  Think about it. Many salespeople are given a company car that enables them to visit clients and prospective clients. Most company car drivers do not have much choice about which car they can have. It's usually a medium-range Ford, Hyundai or Toyota. I'm pretty sure if we could choose any company car we'd all be choosing Porsches, Range Rovers or Bentleys. That's not the way the world works… Sadly. The same goes for the tools our companies use. IT would be a nightmare for companies if every employee used different tools to get their work done. We saw this being played out a year ago when there were concerns about the security of Zoom. In the end, IT departments standardised which video conferencing tools employees were allowed to use. Some went with Zoom after they beefed up their security. Others went with Microsoft Teams.  So, if we can't change the tools we have to use at work, what can we do to mitigate this? The first thing I would do is to find out all the various inboxes I have where work is coming in. There will be your email inbox, possibly your Slack or Microsoft Teams inbox, plus maybe a SaleForce inbox. Knowing where your work is coming from is the number one priority.  Next, create a start of day checklist that includes checking all these inboxes and task lists for new work coming in. Then copy and paste your tasks for the day into one list. Now that might be a third party task manager if you are allowed to do that, or just a simple list in your company approved notes app. This list will form part of your daily task list. All you need is a simple list of tasks you need to complete that day.  Another thing worth investigating is whether you can subscribe to your work calendar. I don't usually advise people to put their personal events on their work calendar—who knows who has access to that. But you may find it is possible to subscribe to your work calendar and have that coming into your preferred calendar of choice be that a Google or Apple calendar.  In my experience, having two different calendar apps causes conflicts with your time. You will likely double book yourself one day. If you can't subscribe to your work calendar, then try it the other way round and subscribe to your personal calendar—just make sure nobody else can see it.  The reality is there are no magic bullets that will miraculously allow your work and personal systems to converge. When you find yourself in a situation where your company essentially locks down their information, the only way you will find a solution is within your work permitted tools.  Should you run two systems? Well, it's not impossible but it's not ideal either. But maybe that is the only solution you have. However, no matter how security sensitive your company is, they are not going to stop you from writing down things like “call Charles Grey about the proposal” or “work on Project X presentation” into a third party application. No nefarious corporate spy is likely to figure out what those simple tasks mean. You can use your phone to collect these tasks into your preferred app. But that said, the simplest way to manage this is to just use the company-approved apps. You may not likely them, but if they show you a list of tasks you need to complete each day and you have a notes app where you can keep your notes and project support materials for your projects then you have a system. Maybe a system not using your preferred tools, but at least you have a system.  SO, the best advice I can give you if you are in a situation where your company is running multiple tools is to not fight your IT department. By all means, reach out to them to see if you can use your own apps, but you get a firm no, then look at what is available and set up your system within those tools.  Make it a routine start of day task to collect all your work tasks from the various inputs your company has into one consolidated list and work from that list each day.  One final tip I may suggest that has worked for some people in the past is to use a task manager that will email you a list of your tasks each morning. Todoist does this, for example, and you can set it so it emails you at 5 am in the morning. Then when you get to work, all you need do is print off that list, and use it as not only your task list for the day but also as a collection system. You can write down new tasks onto that paper and when you get home at the end of the enter the new tasks and check off the tasks you did. You can do that as part of your daily planning session.  I hope that has answered your question, Stian and Steve, Thank you for the question.  It just remains for me now to wish you all a very very productive week.

Imagine the experiences gained and lessons learned from founding your own SaaS company, selling it to Saleforce and then becoming the CEO of a Salesforce Business Unit. That was the journey Mike Micucci, who recently left Salesforce eleven years after selling his start-up to Salesforce in 2009 and ultimately rose through the ranks to be the CEO of the Commerce Cloud business.Mike shares the story behind founding GroupSwim, an early B2B collaboration platform that became the foundation for Salesforce Chatter. Then Mike shares the story behind how community cloud and commerce cloud came together, with both a B2B and B2C - or even a B2B2C offering. Over the last 10 years, Commerce Cloud has grown to be over a $1B business and you can rest assured that Metrics were at the heart of most of Mike's strategic decisions.Mike's experiences started when I first met Mike in the initial "vortex" of B2B eCommerce in 1997 - 2001 where he was an integral part of the product management senior leadership teams at Netscape and Commerce One. Then in 2005 he founded GroupSwim, and had firmly established Product Market Fit by the beginning of 2009 when he received two different offers to purchase GroupSwim.Following the GroupSwim acquisition, Mike decided to accept the opportunity to be part of the Corporate Social Network initiative within Salesforce - yes Chatter which launched in 2010. From that experience, Mike pitched the concept of "Community Cloud" to Marc Benioff and Parker Harris. The vision was to build a solution to connect the different "communities" within Salesforce to other communities and companies.By 2020, Community Cloud had reached 650 million users. Interesting that Community Cloud is measured by usage, growth and how much revenue they influence on the other core clouds. Mike shares the Salesforce relentless focus on customer input and feedback into the product lifecycle, especially through the use of Customer Advisory Boards (CAB's) which provides a primary to the product roadmap. In fact, the concept of Commerce Cloud was originally stimulated by a customer who had built their own commerce capability into Community Cloud in 2014.Later in 2014 Salesforce launched Commerce Cloud at Dreamforce. By 2016 Community Cloud and Commerce Cloud became one Salesforce Cloud business unit. Mike share how Digital Commerce grew more in 2020 then in the past few years combined. When COVID first hit, Mike saw his dashboards showing how volume on Commerce Cloud spiked starting in March. Finally, Mike shared he segments metrics into usage metrics and operational metrics. Operational metrics on commerce starts with GMV (Gross Merchandise Value) which hit over $50B GMV in 2020. DAU/MAU (Daily Average Users/Monthly Average Users) was a key metric used to evaluate the health of his business unit. ACV (Annual Contract Value), AOV (Average Order Value) and churn was also tracked daily as key operational metrics. Mike also shares why "branding" and "pricing" are the two hardest aspects of building a Cloud business. In fact, he went into detail on the benefit of a blended pricing model that uses both a subscription model plus usage based pricing levers. One of the hardest parts of a variable usage based pricing model is how best to forecast variable revenue.Mike's story reflects the opportunity, reality and journey that so many corporate leaders in the Cloud have experienced over the last 20+ years. If you are looking for inspiration coupled with detailed insights into how an entrepreneur's journey can evolve from the corporate world to being a founder and then on to the CEO of a $1B+ cloud business, this is a great listen!

How is the Coronavirus impacting the SaaS market? This can be an opportunity for SaaS providers to step up, be leaders and demonstrate the true partnerships they have with their clients and employees. Workday has taken the initial step of paying a cash bonus to their employees, equalling two weeks of pay or roughly $80M. This was a pretty bold move as they are relatively small in comparison to their competitors, Oracle, SAP and Microsoft. Following suit, Marc Benioff announced that Saleforce would not being conducting any significant layoffs for at least the next 90 days and encouraging other CEOs to make the same 90 day pledge. Equally important—will these companies do right thing with their customers? Jeff Lazarto UpperEdge’s Oracle Practice Leader discusses some measures that are underway.

How To Ensure Your Sales Teams Actually Have Time To Sell   All organizations, no matter what size, need to know how to ensure your sales teams actually have time to sell.  Resa Gooding is a partner in an Hubspot certified agency and they mostly help companies, especially startups, in Israel. As one of the top three agencies in Israel, they primarily work with startups and other traditional companies such as agriculture and manufacturing. They are helping them understand the value of CRM and how to effectively apply it to their companies.  Challenges salespeople face The most common problem in the sales force is the lack of training given to the sales team. This lack of experience causes inefficiency as the companies throw their sales reps in deep waters  and expect them to swim.  Many companies are so focused on the technology or the product they're producing,  they don't spend adequate time sharing the value and benefits of their product with the sales force.  An untrained team ends up spending more time on the administrative tasks instead of selling. They need to be given the information and the tools to effectively sit down with a new prospect.  If management fails to offer the sales team a way to stay accountable to the work day activities, management can mistakenly think their team isn't working. There has to be a system in place so the sales team can report their activities and successes.  Having this in place also gives management a tangible way of seeing the work their team is doing. For example, how many calls they've made in the workday.  Resa set up marketing campaigns for her clients but began to see that if  sales people didn't know how to work with the prospects that came from the marketing, the efforts were in vain. She saw that to make marketing effective, the sales people needed to be able to  summarize conversations properly and sales reps needed to reduce their time spent on administrative efforts. They needed to be equipped to spend their time selling. Resa aims to give salespeople the time to study their product, set up appointments, and communicate with prospects effectively, instead of spending their time doing administrative tasks.  Ensure that your sales teams are having the time to sell Sales reps need training in order to be successful and reach their goals. Sales processes they can follow have to be set up so their efforts can be checked by management.  This promotes accountability.  There are three tools that can be used to ensure that sales teams are getting more time to sell their company's product. Connect your email inbox to your CRM software You can use HubSpot, SaleForce, or other similar CRM software. At the end of the day, what matters is that your sales team is more efficient in their work. The first thing you can do is connect your email inbox to the CRM software you're using.  This is efficiency at its best.  Using this software allows your manager to see the emails exchanged between you and prospects or customers.  Enabling the manager to view this communication directly eliminates the need to summarize conversations at a later time.  Leave that to your CRM.  Both marketing and sales today can be measured through this software. Managers and the sales team no longer have to meet each time reports need to be made. All aspects of the sales process can be viewed as needed and everything is measurable.  Earlier salespeople, like the ones who sold door-to-door, had to write down all their data or write a report about their sales day. Today, the salesperson just needs to connect to their email inbox on the CRM platform and reports are immediate. Using CRM increase the sales reps' available time up to 21% compared to doing the reports manually.  For example, when you attend a conference, typically you have to wait until you get home to  input information manually. You can potentially delay communicating with the contacts you made at the conference up to a whole week.   This is valuable time wasted in a world where transactions can happen so quickly.  When you are using CRM software, you are able to reach out  immediately by asking for their email and starting a conversation while still at the conference. This is a huge advantage to setting up CRM software and free up so much time in the sales process.  Connect your Calendly to your email communications  The second way to ensure your sales teams are getting the time to sell is to connect your Calendly to your email communications. This is an efficient way of setting up a meeting with prospects and clients. Hubspot has an amazing tool that can help salespeople connect with speed. It's suggested that you also embed three specific times a client can meet with you.  It's more efficient when they don't have to work as hard to figure out a time or date you're available. It cuts down on the emails that have to be exchanged to firm a meeting which also saves valuable time.  Use templates effectively  Templates are ways to streamline the time it takes to write and send an email while it makes communication customizable.  This can be set up in HubSpot once your inbox is created and by simply clicking a button, it will copy all the text and bring it straight to your HubSpot. You can then change the information and content to make it more personalized and unique to your prospect or client.   Resa has observed that this feature is especially helpful for salespeople who may not be  strong in written communication. This is where marketing team can be especially helpful. Marketing can set-up the templates for salespeople to use.  After emails are sent, the software can then track when it's opened by the recipient.  Having this information helps salespeople become more efficient about timing and targeting the call back or follow up.  It's much easier to build a rapport with someone who has already shown initial interest. The recipient won't get any notifications that you've seen them open the email.  It's just a helpful tool for you to time the response.  These three tools help make your sales team more efficient as it reduces their time on administrative tasks.  Using Hubspot also allows access to reports summarizing all the activity as well. HubSpot is free so businesses can check it out and test it in their own sales systems. This is a good platform for startups that don't have the budget to invest in programs and software.  Many startup companies that Resa has helped have seen positive results when they use her three suggestions for saving time.  “How To Ensure Your Sales Teams Actually Have Time To Sell” episode resources  You can message Resa via her LinkedIn account. Mike Wheeler is the founder of Mike Wheeler Media which provides Salesforce training, consulting and development services worldwide. Mike creates the course curriculum and provides training for users and those seeking to become certified on the Salesforce platform. He is also a world-class online trainer and instructor with over 27,000 students, over 9 courses and over 7,600 reviews on the Udemy online training platform. Period in full-time business He has been doing his own business since 2001 before which he used to do technical writing, training and curriculum development. He also supplements what he does with the business with some consulting work. Core revenue streams One of his primary revenue streams are his online courses on the Udemy platform. He says he has had sales on the platform every single day since he started offering his courses there. He also makes money from Salesforce consulting and development engagements. Starting out in the business Mike had a long career in the corporate world doing technical writing for different software companies. That work led him more towards contract work, but he says he had a few stints as an employee. He would always go in at the end of a project to write manuals. That was back when the internet was still new. The contracts would typically be 6 to 9 month engagements with different companies. He would basically go where the work was. Getting into Salesforce Mike encountered Salesforce in 2008 when he was doing technical writing and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to better rank his technical writing services on Google. He then started getting into WordPress for websites and building his own websites. While building a website for a client, he was asked for a web delete form on Salesforce and he did it but as he was offering the website development services, he realised that Salesforce was becoming more and more popular in the market, so he decided to train more on it. One day, in 2011, while in a Barnes and Nobles book store, he came across a book on Salesforce development, read it and felt like he had what it took to go into the Salesforce platform professionally. Salesforce Mike says it's a web-based or cloud-based platform that one can use and customize to fit any business or process. It can be used for marketing, sales and customer service. It can be used by any business, in any industry, and is customized through clicks instead of code, though a person can also use code if they want to. Salesforce is best known for the fact that it can be customized to meet the marketing, sales and service needs of any business. For example, a business owner can use Salesforce to replace Legacy systems, spreadsheets and many other processes/systems. Mike says Salesforce was one of the pioneers of cloud computing and SaaS business. Knowing the Salesforce business would work After learning Salesforce, he needed to use it in practice, so while still working as a technical writer he got more involved with Salesforce related work which enabled him to build on his expertise. Going into Salesforce training services As he was learning Saleforce, getting certified and seeking his first job as a Salesforce developer, he started to develop an interest in sharing the value of Salesforce with anyone who was seeking it as an attainable path to a cloud-based career. For several years, he thought he would blog about Salesforce or develop his own online help system, but he realised that it would be a big time commitment and hard to monetize. He ended up developing Salesforce-based online courses and teaching on Udemy. He came across Udemy when a friend referred him to a sale Udemy was holding for their courses. Mike really liked the Udemy business model which enables people to buy a course and keep it for life. He ended up buying more than 20 courses for everything he would be interested in learning. Naturally, he got interested in knowing whether there were any...

Diva Tech Talk was delighted to interview Cindy Warner, whose rich, multi-level career and mission story is inspiring.  Cindy began as a pre-med undergraduate aiming to become an orthopedic surgeon, at the University of California in San Diego. Unfortunately, in her second year, she frequently fainted at the sight of blood, which reoriented her career. So after obtaining her degree in business administration, with a minor in computer science from Grand Valley State University in Michigan, she began an internship at IBM, selling typewriters, and subsequently System 23’s and System 36’s. There “I learned about this small, innovative company called FedEx,” (www.fedex.com), Cindy said. “The intriguing thing about FedEx was the speed with which they wanted to move packages, through technology. If you wanted to be in technology at FedEx, you needed to be in operations, first.” So Cindy’s initial job was as a courier. She rose to become a FedEx Operations Manager and then ran FedEx’s Eastern Region.  “But I didn’t want my career to be only about transportation.  I wanted to broaden my horizon.” To do that, Cindy moved back to Southern California where she worked on a large Oracle systems implementation for a Fortune 1000 dental equipment manufacturer. “I loved doing the consulting part, which led me to Ernst and Young.” She spent 9 years at E&Y/Cap Gemini, first implementing back office Oracle deployments, and subsequently moving into front office consulting in the area of customer relationship management. The downsizing of CG’s worldwide consulting operations brought her to next opportunity: building a CRM (customer relationship management) practice, under a one-year contract, for Accenture. “The exciting thing about that time was that Saleforce.com was taking the market by storm,” Cindy said. She was then offered the chance to build out Saleforce.com’s (www.salesforce.com) professional services practice, and create an “enterprise presence” at that company -- an assignment she fulfilled for two and a half years, commuting frequently from Michigan to California and other parts of the globe. She left Salesforce.com at the beginning of the 2008 recession/depression to “spend more time on entrepreneurial ventures.” She already owned a 1938’s-style diner, and unique specialty market in Northern Michigan, and decided to replicate it in downtown Detroit.  “That lasted about a year until we saw the traffic volumes waning, and decided to close the store.”  Cindy then moved over to Alix Partners, a company solely focused on helping large corporations restructure so they could turn around.  “It was deploying a life lesson. It was a cleansing of my soul.  I understood their pain,” she said. “In some cases, I was emotionally vested in helping these companies sustain.”  From there she migrated to become a partner at PWC Consulting for two years where she helped build out their cloud computing and Salesforce.com practices.  She then moved to IBM, to direct its worldwide cloud computing strategy, but the entrepreneurial “itch” returned. Years before, over lunch with Marc Benioff, founder and CEO for Salesforce.com, Cindy posited the opinion that CRM, at some point in the future, would have to become consumer-centric. That germ of an idea has blossomed into her new startup:  360ofme (www.360ofme.com) which she founded in May, 2016. “The data of YOU is proliferating wildly,” she said.  “And it is in silos of data.”  A consumer’s healthcare information, purchase decisions, ownership decisions, financial records are all held by the organizations with whom the consumer does business. “None of that is in a single place.  None of that has context. We want to give consumers the ability to control their own data, have it with them, share it, and gain insights that will allow them to live better, more predictable lives.”   The 360ofme team demonstrated a prototype at Dreamforce 2016 (Salesforce.com’s annual convention); its first beta version will be available in November, 2016; and there will be full platform launch in January, 2017.  The first three vertical markets will be finance, healthcare, and automotive ---- highly regulated industries with crucial consumer data. “Consumers can intentionally interact with companies in those markets,” Cindy said. Cindy catalogued her top three leadership strengths as enthusiastic passion for what she does, a belief that everyone should have fun, and a tendency to be highly collaborative.   When speaking about women in leadership roles, she noted that she has always felt the need to prove herself because of that, “I’ve almost felt that I have nothing to lose!”   She also shares her main leadership lessons: Humiliation is not a leadership trait.   Helping people find their voices is essential. Never take “no” for an answer.  “Don’t let people tell you that you can’t!” Don’t take yourself too seriously!  Have fun along the way. In her philanthropic life, Cindy’s favorite organizations include The Special Olympics, veteran-oriented nonprofits, women in technology causes, and reform of the U.S. justice system as it relates to inmates with mental health issues.    For the full blog write up, make sure to check us out on online at www.divatechtalk.com , on Twitter @divatechtalks, and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/divatechtalk.
