I share my own mental health breakdown that nearly destroyed my marriage and had me unable to get out of bed—all while no healthcare provider connected the dots to my hormonal changes. This isn't just another menopause episode; it's the mental health conversation that might save your life or the life of someone you love.Dr. Juliana Hauser has a PhD in Counseling Education, is a TEDx speaker and the author of A New Position on Sex: A Guide to Greater Sexual Confidence, Pleasure, and Authenticity, coming September 2025.Key Takeaways:Your "mood swings" aren't character flaws but biological changes in how estrogen regulates your emotions and resilienceWomen are seven times more likely to have suicidal thoughts during perimenopause, yet most doctors never mention thisWhy it's nearly impossible to tell which midlife struggles are hormonal and which are circumstantial and why that distinction matters for treatmentHow to create your mental health safety net and the practical steps Dr. Hauser recommends for weathering the stormThe freedom and self-acceptance waiting on the other side of this transitionJuliana Says: You're Not Too F***ing Old! to find absolute joy and pleasure in life again!Learn more about Jen Marples at https://www.jenmarples.comWant to work with Jen? But despite our humble beginnings, my parents were determined to break the cycle of poverty and create a better life for themselves and their children. My parents were the first in their respective families to graduate from high school, let alone college. In fact, other than a half-uncle, I was the first in my family to even attend college. And I was considered "not college material" by my teachers. Does woke ideology in psychotherapy education damage the field of professional counseling? Therapists are being evaluated more and more on the fundamental axioms that underlay critical social justice theory instead of the traditional principles that empower counselors to effectively and respectfully treat their patients. Is Christianity responsible for racism? According to Amy Gallagher in her fight against the UK's NHS, the answer is no. Two years ago, Amy Gallagher was told she was unfit to engage with her patients since she disagrees with Orwellian principles foundational to woke ideology that view white people as the “problem of our time.” Today, I am joined by Amy Gallagher to discuss the shortcomings of this subtly vicious ideology with inherently detrimental impacts on psychotherapy as a profession along with the unparalleled negative outcomes for patients who are subjected to it. Amy Gallagher is a Mental Health Nurse who has been working in the UK National Health Service (NHS) for seven years. She has worked with adolescents and adults with a range of issues such as eating disorders, personality disorders, anxiety, depression, and psychosis. Amy has a postgraduate diploma in psychodynamic psychotherapy and is currently suing the NHS for suspending the final part of her training to become a psychotherapist because she disagreed with Critical Race Theory. You can follow Amy Gallagher's work on Twitter @standuptowoke and can donate to fund her legal fees and application for judicial review in her Travistock discrimination lawsuit on GoFundMe, here.In this episode we discuss how the death of religion on a social scale has created an environment rife with discrimination against thought diversity in therapeutic treatment. Amy argues that psychotherapy as a profession has been hijacked by an ideologically-driven oppression of viewpoint divergence, threatening the professional development of therapists, and as in Amy's case, open discrimination against Christian counselors and their patients. Amy sheds light on how the profession of psychotherapy suffers as a result of ideological principles lacking in an evidence base being taught as fact, and we discuss the negative effects and experiences patients endure as a result. Amy's case presents a unique point in time where people of certain demographics are discriminated against by progressive puritanicals who believe that simplistic and divisive narratives are the only answer to the complexities of the human condition. When you entrust a therapist with your personal struggles, you expect her to see you as a unique individual, and greet you with non-judgmental curiosity. The last thing anyone wants in their counseling relationship is to be treated prejudicially, stereotyped on the basis of their immutable characteristics, or made to feel guilty for the color of their skin. And yet, to students like Leslie, it's becoming increasingly apparent that that is exactly what is being taught in graduate programs.Therapy is a place you hope to be able to work through shame; learn to see your foibles with compassion; and internalize your locus of control, while releasing any undue sense of responsibility for issues you may have been scapegoated for. It is also ideally a process that helps cultivate peace, understanding, and perspective when dealing with people you find challenging. And in therapy, we expect to learn to recognize and correct for distorted ways of thinking that amplify our stress. Unfortunately, according to Leslie and whistleblowers like her, many modern counseling programs do just the opposite.Listen as Antioch University whistleblower, coach, and founder of the Radical Center Leslie Elliott describes the disturbing series of events that unfolded over the past two years. We explore ethical dilemmas and differences of opinion in how people in our field are conceptualizing complex matters such as “social justice,” victimhood, “allyship,” gender, the role of the therapist, politics and activism, racism and “anti-racism,” cultural competence, stereotyping, neutrality, individuality, and responsibility.Leslie Elliott is a holistic wellness coach in Washington State who works with clients from a person-centered, existential perspective, taking into account the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. She earned a BA in Psychology in 2008 and went straight to law school in 2009. During her second year of law school, she decided a legal career was not for her and went back to the drawing board.Leslie spent the next several years raising her 4 children and working part-time in the field of natural medicine before returning to higher education, enrolling in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Master's program at Antioch University in 2019. There she had the opportunity to learn and improve counseling skills and therapeutic approaches, but also encountered something deeply disturbing: the usurpation of traditional therapy values by Critical Social Justice ideology. Near the end of her Master's coursework, she took a leave of absence after her courses began requiring students to sign a Social Justice “civility pledge.” Frustrated in her attempts to communicate her concerns to the university, she decided to go public in October of 2022 and expose how ideology is corrupting the fields of mental health and higher education.Undeterred from her work, Leslie began her coaching practice in late 2021, working in a non-clinical setting that allows her to use her counseling skills and her passion for natural health to support her clients. She works with individuals and families, and areas of interest include but are not limited to: life-span, aging, and fertility issues; parent coaching; spiritual growth and integration; technology and pornography addiction recovery; infidelity trauma and recovery; gender confusion and detransition; ADHD; institutional abuse & “DEI” discrimination; medical abuse trauma; and more.Leslie's consulting practice, The Radical CenterLeslie's blog, The Radical Center on SubstackLeslie's YouTube channel, The Radical Center on YouTubeLeslie's GiveSendGo legal fundIn this episode, I mentioned Jonathan Haidt's work; in particular, his book “The Righteous Mind.” You can find that in my bookshop, or purchase it directly from this Amazon Affiliate link.If you enjoyed this conversation, please rate & review it on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. I had the great pleasure of having Kevin Doyle on the show! In this episode, we got into many great conversations about how Kevin originally got into the field of mental health and addiction. We then talk about the process of entering graduate school programs and what students can expect from programs. We also got into discussions regarding certain classes that could be very beneficial for students that should be added to programs as well as possibly changing the prerequisites in getting into a masters level counseling program. Many questions came up regarding "whether is it necessary to have a bachelor's degree prior to entering a counseling graduate program. Would other work-related experience be sufficient to enter the masters level counseling program over having a bachelor's degree? The difficult topic of gatekeeping was discussed as to the process for the student as well as the graduate school professors. Then finally we get into discussions on the current behavioral health field workforce issues we are currently having. We talk about why there are workforce issues as well as how can we as a profession improve upon these issues so the future generation of mental health and addiction professionals. It was an amazing learning experience to have Kevin as a BHI special guest! We have a new topic that we are highlighting on the show. We are discussing resilience and growth after trauma, also known as post-traumatic growth, which is a theory that explains the positive human transformation that can occur after any type of physical trauma, psychological or emotional trauma, spiritual trauma, or even after struggling with a prolonged illness. Joining us to discuss trauma and post-traumatic growth is Dr. Melissa Zeligman. She is an Assistant Professor of Counseling Education at the University of Central Florida. Prior to her Doctorate, she served as a mental health counselor working in the agency, medical, legal, as well as high school settings. Her research focuses on trauma work, including the experience of post-traumatic growth. Positive growth or post-traumatic growth is something that interests me, especially within the context of treating people with chronic pain or other chronic health conditions that we see in physical therapy or other physical medicine or rehabilitation settings. You are going to learn a lot about this topic. Hopefully, you will embrace it as much as I have in both clinical practices and become very interested in the research. If you are interested in learning more about a trauma-informed approach to treating chronic pain, make sure to check out our course at the IntegrativePainScienceInstitute.com called Trauma-Informed Pain Care, where you will learn how to treat trauma from a trauma-informed perspective for people living with chronic pain. We are honored to have back with us - Alexander John Shaia. Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Alexander John was part of a large extended family that had emigrated from Lebanon a generation previously. He grew up immersed in the ancient traditions of Middle Eastern Christianity (Maronite Catholicism) and was expected to become a priest, a family tradition since the year 1300. He was led otherwise. Alexander John attended the University of Notre Dame and received a degree in Cultural Anthropology. Next came a brief time in seminary followed by a Master's in Counseling Education, a Master's in Religious Education, a graduate certificate in Pastoral Psychotherapy, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. His extensive psychological training across many modalities finally led him to Switzerland where he studied with the Jungian Analyst and founder of Sandplay Psychotherapy, Dora Maria Kalff. Alexander John became the first US man admitted to the International Society for Sandplay Therapy and continues to serve as a senior Certified Teaching Member of the organization. Returning to the United States, he undertook years of private practice, teaching, parish and retreat ministry and further study. Integrating his life-long practice of prayer with many cross-disciplines—anthropology, psychology, spirituality, and ritual work—has shaped him into a unique thought-leader and a widely sought consultant, trainer, and inspiring keynote speaker. Then in 2000, Alexander John's professional life expanded from being primarily a speaker to also that of an author, now with some eight books and more in the works. He lives in the high Rocky Mountains in Northern New Mexico and the wild Atlantic coast of Northwest Spain. Dr. Juliana is a relationship and sex expert with a PhD in Counseling Education; a background in teaching gender studies and therapists at the graduate level; a licensed marriage and family / professional and practicing counselor herself. She says sex is the final chapter in personal development – I could not agree more! We learn how to talk, but rarely learn how to listen to feedback - that and more in this wonderful episode. Our sexuality is so much more than what we were taught. It is so much more than our sex acts. How does sex relate to everything else in your life? Let's talk about sexual agency. The power of having your own back. Let's talk about consent in a marriage and/or a long term relationship – a woman has sex with the partner because he wants to, but she really doesn't want to and just goes through the moves – - Is this consent? - Is she damaging her “desire” or rewiring her brain when she just goes through the motions? - “It's okay because it has always been okay is not good enough” How to receive communication – how to feel safe – we do a fun role play! How to have a conversation about sexual wants. There is always something underneath the ask. www.dr-juliana.com www.instagram.com/drjulianahauser Don't Forget your CME! https://earnc.me/j7Klfq

In this episode we talk with Alexander John Shaia. Moral Injury of Abandonment Moral injury is traumatic and may involve the loss of a sense of Self (This is not who I am / I am a bad person) Safety (I am not safe, others will reject me because of what I did) Personal power (I had no choice or say in the matter) It is important to use context and consider all the factors at play when helping people examine and reconcile the situation Often they did the best they could with the tools they had in that situation at that time Moral injury is defined as the profound psychological distress which results from actions, or the lack of them, which violate one's moral or ethical code. Abandonment means leaving, relinquishing or even choosing one over another. People sometimes have to make the devastating choice to abandon one thing for the good of another Other times (terminal illness) they may not have a choice People may also suffer moral injury by proxy when the leaders of a culture with whom they identify engage in morally reprehensible acts. Moral injury has multiple PACER impacts
We often focus on the primary grief after a breakup but fail to consider: Secondary losses that need to be grieved (friends, routine, role/identity, dreams) Guilt (and the need for processing) Changes in self reference and default mode (and the need for alterations) Depressive symptoms that result from the stress of the breakup as well as being a part of the grieving process Grief has 5 phases: Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance #cheapceus #allceus #counselingskills #dawnelisesnipes
Dhanya Rico shares with us how to adopt the mindset of an intelligent consumer. In a world of limitless options for self-help, personal development, fitness gurus, life coaches and social influencers, it can be overwhelming to assess where to go for what we actually need. Part of being an intelligent consumer involves creating the space for self reflection that allows ourselves to determine for ourselves what we are looking for in life, rather than have somebody else tell us, for us. With a Masters Degree in Counseling and Counseling Education and a specialization degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, along with being a lifelong spiritual practitioner, Dhanya sheds some light for us on what it looks like to create that space, learn how to make smart choices, be ok with changing our minds when we need to, and the importance of taking personal responsibility for our own individual, spiritual growth. Jayne Amelia interviews former foster youth, Venus Manuel, a shining example of how nurture does not always triumph over nature. From an early childhood rampant with sexual and physical abuse followed by a string of nine foster care homes, the development of another disillusioned dysfunctional youth seemed tragically imminent. However, the strength, passion and individuality inherent in Venus provided her with the abilities to not only rise above her beginnings, but stand as a true pillar of society. After graduating from Palmdale High School in 1996, Venus was emancipated from foster care and rapidly found herself in a state of destitution. Quickly responding to her circumstances, she forged an opportunity with the US Air Force and served an eight-year commitment to her country as a combat photographer. Those eight years were incredibly fruitful. Venus Manuel accomplished what most people would not be able to do with twice the time. The main bulk of her energy was directed towards bettering the lives of transitional foster care youth. As a motivational speaker requested by organizations such as the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, Child Welfare League of America and America Works, Venus has raised over half a million dollars specifically for disenfranchised youth, and continues to fight for the welfare of foster care youth. At the same time, and carrying with her the platform “The Successful Transition of Foster Youth” at age 21, she began competing in and winning high profile beauty pageants. Her titles include Miss High Desert 2000, Miss Central California 2001, Miss Los Angeles County 2002, Miss Black California 2003, and Miss Black United States 2004. Venus has also won the Miss America Interview and Community Service Award, and was chosen as one of Glamour magazine’s “Top Ten College Women in America.” Venus has an Associate’s degree in Liberal Arts from Antelope Valley College and a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services from California State University Dominguez Hills where she graduated in the top 10% of her class and was nominated by her peers as Outstanding Graduate. She has a Master’s degree in Public Administration and Master’s degree in Counseling Education. She was also invited by the late director Penny Marshall and producer Kenadie Cobbin to be the opening act of their immensely popular Vagina Monologues at the Wilshire Ebell Theater. Venus is married with two children. After the birth of her son she took up pole dancing as a hobby that turned into a 12-year passion of movement exploration, performing, teaching (women, men, and LGBTQ) and competing all over the world in Vertical Theater. She is also an Independent Living Coordinator with the Los Angeles County Probation Department continuing her work with foster youth and says, “I will continue to champion this cause by being a voice for those too afraid to speak and for those who are not being heard.”Venus Manuel - Pole Theatre USA 2017 Semi-Pro Pole Drama Championhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbXOn9c9s54National Juvenile Justice Networkhttp://www.njjn.org/our-work/juvenile-justice-reform-advances-california?phpMyAdmin=14730ab3483c51c94ca868bccffa06efNational Center Youth Lawhttps://youthlaw.org/publication/legislative-push-juvenile-justice-reform-california/CA Division of Juvenile Justicehttps://www.cdcr.ca.gov/juvenile-justice/

Holly Morphew is an award-winning financial coach, author, global speaker, and multi-generational entrepreneur and talks to Alex about how to live to your values and the importance of having an agenda for your life. Holly shares great tips on how to become financially independent putting yourself in a position where work is an option, not a necessity. If you learn how to maximise your cash flow, reduce your debt, save and create residual income then you are successfully playing the game of money and everything becomes much easier. KEY TAKEAWAYS The only way to live the life you want is to put your vision front and centre of what you do It always comes down to values It's about having an agenda for your life You can find opportunities to feed your soul if you know what feeds your soul It's about knowing yourself We are all human and on the same level but we have different perspectives The only opinion that matters is yours Money is neutral and it is there if you want it in your life When you understand how to play the game of money everything becomes much easier Financial independence is when work is an option for you. Maximise your cash flow and understand your impact amount, the amount you can put to best You should maximise your cash flow, reduce your debt, save and create residual income. Debt is a tool that you can use to work for you. Financial independence is about your emotional well-being and there is performing and non-performing debt There is a relationship between our health and our finances, how we look after ourselves is a reflection of how we look after our wealth We are all in life together and coming together and creating community is what makes the difference. BEST MOMENTS ‘My personal values are freedom, love and authenticity' ‘You are worthy because you've been born' ‘There is power and freedom in understanding your own story' ‘Every day you are building wealth' VALUABLE RESOURCES Business, Wealth and Mindset podcast series ABOUT THE GUEST Hi! I'm Holly! In my twenties, despite being a high-earner I found myself living paycheck to paycheck and massively in debt. After doing “mental accounting” for a number of years, I finally decided to put a pen to paper and discovered I had $67,000 in credit card debt. When I called my financial advisor to ask for help, he asked me how much more money I wanted to invest each month. Was he not listening? I didn't have any money to invest! I knew in that moment that there had to be another way to build wealth. I devoted the next year to learning everything I could about debt-elimination, wealth-building, and the economy. I read hundreds of personal finance books, went to money and investing seminars, took courses, and interviewed financial experts. She created a system, now known as the Financial Impact system, and three years later she was debt-free. She didn't stop there, and in her thirties, she reached financial independence. Holly began teaching personal finance in 2006 to young adults as a service project with Rotary International. In 2008, she received the prestigious “Rotarian of the Year” award for her work in financial literacy. After a successful career in real estate and finance, and with a passion for lifestyle design, financial independence, and mindful living, Holly founded Financial Impact in 2016. Holly is Accredited Financial Counselor® and is recognized for her unique approach to money, which reinforces core values while creating wealth. Through programs, courses, and speaking, Holly has coached thousands to peace of mind and confidence with their money. In 2017, Holly was recognized by the Association for Financial Planning and Counseling Education® with the “Bridging the Gap” award for outstanding work as an entrepreneur and financial coach. Holly has spoken to audiences of 2500+ on the topic of money, leadership, and conscious living. Holly has a B.A. in International Business & Japanese from the University of Colorado. She now resides in Boulder, Colorado. Holly loves to hike fourteeners, watch the sunrise, travel, and practice yoga.
