President Russell M. Nelson has recently invited Latter-day Saints to make discipleship of Jesus Christ their highest priority. At Ensign College, an institution of higher education founded and sponsored by the Church, the school's mission to develop capable and trusted disciples of Jesus Christ reinforces this invitation even in secular degrees like social media marketing. On this episode of the Church News podcast, Joseph Kerry, chair of the Communication Department at Ensign College, joins Church News reporter Mary Richards to share how to wisely use social media while increasing one’s discipleship of Jesus Christ. He stresses the significance of creating and consuming uplifting content, being a peacemaker online and how intentional technology use can help maintain spiritual and emotional well-being. The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Hosts Jon Ryan Jensen, editor of the Church News, and Church News reporter Mary Richards share unique views of the stories, events, and people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience. Produced by KellieAnn Halvorsen.

An engaging episode highlighting the mysterious ways we're watched over.Bible Text:A man from the family of Levi married a Levite woman. The woman became pregnant and had a son. She saw there was something special about him and hid him. She hid him for three months. When she couldn't hide him any longer she got a little basket-boat made of papyrus, waterproofed it with tar and pitch, and placed the child in it. Then she set it afloat in the reeds at the edge of the Nile. The baby's older sister found herself a vantage point a little way off and watched to see what would happen to him. Pharaoh's daughter came down to the Nile to bathe; her maidens strolled on the bank. She saw the basket-boat floating in the reeds and sent her maid to get it. She opened it and saw the child—a baby crying! Her heart went out to him. She said, “This must be one of the Hebrew babies.”Then his sister was before her: “Do you want me to go and get a nursing mother from the Hebrews so she can nurse the baby for you?”Pharaoh's daughter said, “Yes. Go.” The girl went and called the child's mother.Pharaoh's daughter told her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me. Join Mrs. Shue and the shoebox kids as they dive deep into the story of Joseph, exploring themes of belonging, family, and God's mysterious ways. Sammy grapples with his emotions and yearnings for parental bonds, paralleling Joseph's experience in Egypt. As the children prepare for a sun-kissed church picnic by the lake, Sammy stumbles upon a vulnerable baby bird, mirroring his own sense of displacement. Through heartfelt conversations and nature's gentle cues, Sammy begins to see that perhaps God's plans are working in ways he hadn't imagined. This touching tale reminds us that even in our loneliest moments, there's hope and purpose waiting to unfold.Bible Text:Then Joseph could not control himself before all those who stood by him. He cried, “Make everyone go out from me.” So no one stayed with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers.  And he wept aloud, so that the Egyptians heard it, and the household of Pharaoh heard it.  And Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Comparing Israel's Supreme Court to America's Supreme Court. 64 Israeli legislators, a slim majority of the Knesset, voted on Monday, July 24, to amend one of Israel's Basic Laws, and in so doing, they took away the Israeli Supreme Court's ability to strike down decisions that it finds "unreasonable in the extreme." WSJ, 7/24/23. As my guests in this episode, Dr. Guy Lurie and Dr. Amir Fuchs explain, the news media, including our news media here in the U.S., simply exaggerate the application of the unreasonable standard at issue here. Israel Supreme Court's "unreasonableness Standard" is not used for constitutional or policy matters. Rather, it only applies to a narrow category of administrative cases. For example, the hiring and firing of top government officials. Without this power to check the government's administrative actions, Mr. Netanyahu could potentially fire Israel's attorney general, who is an outspoken critic of his administration and is steadfastly independent. And oh yes, Israel's AG is also in charge of investigating and prosecuting corruption charges currently pending against Mr. Netanyahu! Back in April, I had a conversation with Dr. Gideon Rahat, a Senior Fellow at the Israel Democracy Insitute. He told me that this moment is the most central crisis in Israel's history, and he relayed to me that some people even liken it to war. He explained that this crisis has to do with Israel's national identity, and he described how essential the Supreme Court is to democracy in Israel because compared to the U.S., Israel has a poor system of checks and balances. And that's what this episode is all about - Israel's Supreme Court. For example, how does Israel's Supreme Court compare to our Supreme Court? Does Israel's Supreme Court have the same relationship with Israel's legislative and executive government branches as the US Supreme Court has with Congress and the White House? Mr. Netanyahu seems to think so (listen to the episode and you'll get this). But Dr. Lurie and Dr. Fuchs disagree! Dr. Guy Lurie is a Research Fellow in the Democratic Values and Institutions Program of the Israel Democracy Institute. He is an attorney and holds a Ph.D. in History from Georgetown University. Dr. Amir Fuchs is a Senior Researcher at the Center for Democratic Values and Institutions at the Israel Democracy Institute. He holds a doctorate from the Faculty of Law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and is a lecturer in the Politics and Communication Department at the School of Government and Social Sciences at Hadassah Academic College. Have you ever needed help finding something and finally thought about praying and asking God for help? In today's story, DeeDee is reminded of the story of Abraham's servant and the prayer that he asked God for help. Bible Text:"The servant took ten of his master's camels and, loaded with gifts from his master, traveled to Aram Naharaim and the city of Nahor. Outside the city, he made the camels kneel at a well. It was evening, the time when the women came to draw water. He prayed, “O God, God of my master Abraham, make things go smoothly this day; treat my master Abraham well! As I stand here by the spring while the young women of the town come out to get water, let the girl to whom I say, ‘Lower your jug and give me a drink,' and who answers, ‘Drink, and let me also water your camels'—let her be the woman you have picked out for your servant Isaac. Then I'll know that you're working graciously behind the scenes for my master.” It so happened that the words were barely out of his mouth when Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel whose mother was Milcah the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, came out with a water jug on her shoulder. The girl was stunningly beautiful, a pure virgin. She went down to the spring, filled her jug, and came back up. The servant ran to meet her and said, “Please, can I have a sip of water from your jug?” She said, “Certainly, drink!” And she held the jug so that he could drink. When he had satisfied his thirst she said, “I'll get water for your camels, too, until they've drunk their fill.” She promptly emptied her jug into the trough and ran back to the well to fill it, and she kept at it until she had watered all the camels.Genesis 24 (Message)If you're interested in any other books published by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, please visit adventistbookcenter.com or call 1-800-765-6955.Visit our website: www.kathyskidsstorytime.org We'd love to hear from you. Have you ever had your parents tell you, "Just trust me." In our story today, Willie Teller learns the lesson about trusting his dad over his fears. Bible Text:"Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and gave it to Isaac his son to carry. He carried the flint and the knife. The two of them went off together. Isaac said to Abraham his father, “Father?” “Yes, my son.” “We have flint and wood, but where's the sheep for the burnt offering?” Abraham said, “Son, God will see to it that there's a sheep for the burnt offering.” And they kept on walking together. They arrived at the place to which God had directed him. Abraham built an altar. He laid out the wood. Then he tied up Isaac and laid him on the wood. Abraham reached out and took the knife to kill his son. Just then an angel of God called to him out of Heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Yes, I'm listening.” “Don't lay a hand on that boy! Don't touch him! Now I know how fearlessly you fear God; you didn't hesitate to place your son, your dear son, on the altar for me.” Abraham looked up. He saw a ram caught by its horns in the thicket. Abraham took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. Abraham named that place God-Yireh (God-Sees-to-It). That's where we get the saying, “On the mountain of God, he sees to it.” The angel of God spoke from Heaven a second time to Abraham: “I swear—God's sure word!—because you have gone through with this, and have not refused to give me your son, your dear, dear son, I'll bless you—oh, how I'll bless you! And I'll make sure that your children flourish—like stars in the sky! like sand on the beaches! And your descendants will defeat their enemies. All nations on Earth will find themselves blessed through your descendants because you obeyed me.” Then Abraham went back to his young servants. They got things together and returned to Beersheba. Abraham settled down in Beersheba.Genesis 22 (Message)If you're interested in any other books published by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, please visit adventistbookcenter.com or call 1-800-765-6955.Visit our website: www.kathyskidsstorytime.org We'd love to hear from you.
