Does ambition die in midlife, or are we just getting started? And what happens when your drive is as strong as ever, but your body is screaming 'stop'? Holly Wainwright is interviewing Bruna Papandrea, one of the most successful women in Hollywood. One of the most successful people in Hollywood, full stop. The Australian super-producer came from a working-class background in Adelaide to be in the rooms where things happen - namely bringing massive movies and TV shows to the screen, from Gone Girl and Wild to Big Little Lies and Strife and The Dry. But Bruna's “ambition” story isn't a simple one. Her success exists alongside her management of Lupus, a chronic auto-immune disease. Like other forms of insidious, invisible conditions, it makes everything harder, and the hormonal flares of midlife don't help. Listen to more from Bruna on this episode of No Filter with Mia Freedman from 2016 here. Find out more about Bruna's projects, here.  THE END BITS:  Share your feedback! For the past 17 years, Essence has presented their Black Women in Hollywood Awards during Oscar week. Well, they showed up and showed out again this year. Zendaya, fresh off of that big opening for "Dune," was a fashion icon as she dazzled another red carpet and debuted her stylish new bob haircut. Black love was in full display with B.E.T.'s "Sistas" and "Zatima" actor DeVale Ellis and his wife Khadine Ellis sharing some touching moments on the carpet. "American Fiction" star Erika Alexander joined with fellow actress Kim Coles and uber-producer Yvette Lee Bowser on the carpet. They delved into some nostalgic memories from "Living Single," which recently hit a 30-year milestone. Do you believe it? Oh, time's going too fast. Honoree Danielle Brooks received a standing ovation as she sang the gospel melody, "I Won't Complain" to accept her award. That was something else. You got to check that out. I'm so sure we're going to see a lot of these same folks, especially Danielle Brooks, who is nominated for "The Color Purple" on the Oscar red carpet Sunday. Now, whatever you do, you've got to log in to Instagram on Sunday. We're on at 1 p.m. PT, 4 p.m. ET. We will be live on the red carpet at the 96th Academy Awards. There is an impressive list of female creatives on this year's Oscar nominees list – actors, producers, costume designers - but no female directors. In fact, in the Academy's 94-year-history, only seven women have ever been nominated. Why is that? And what is getting in the way of achieving gender parity in filmmaking? Kim Chakanetsa travels to the heart of Hollywood to find out more. Keri Putnam is a film executive and producer and the founder of Putnam Pictures. She served for 11 years as the CEO of the Sundance Institute which runs the Sundance Film Festival. Prior to that worked as a senior executive at Miramax and HBO. She is also the co-founder of Re-frame, an organisation providing mentorship and training to help women making it into the industry, and served 3 terms on the Women in Film Board of directors. Stephanie Allain is a film Producer and writer and the newly-elected co-President of the Producers Guild of America, the first woman of colour to serve as PGA president. Stephanie was one of the original ReFrame ambassadors and served 3 terms on the WIF Board of Directors including 9 years as Vice President. Stephanie was also the first Black woman to produce the Academy Awards in 2020. In the 1990s she was featured in major Hollywood productions, including City Slickers (1991), Dante's Peak (1997) & Lunarcop (1995), as well as US and international TV shows, including Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987), Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990), and Die Gang (1997), to name a few. Some of the projects she worked on took her to locations such as to South Africa where she was able to meet and spend time with Nelson Mandela before his election, laugh backstage with Shirley MacLaine when she was on tour in Africa, and play with baby lions and see wild African elephants in their habitat. Another project took her into the countryside of East Berlin while living in Hamburg Germany during the shooting of a TV series.Walker's image and talents have also been used in dozens of commercials and Ad campaigns for popular national and international brands. In addition to traditional acting roles, she has also hosted and done voice over for several of the brands. In 2001, Walker married Jeff Stafford, and she and her husband raised her stepdaughter. Raising a child motivated her to stay closer to home with her work. She established working relationships with the Mayor, Councilman, and various city officials as a result.Walker and her husband enjoy stand up paddling, hiking, golf, mountain biking, and spending active time out in nature at every opportunity with their family in Southern California.––––––––––Connect with the Film School'd Podcast:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/filmschooldInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/filmschooldpod/Twitter: https://twitter.com/FilmSchooldPodYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdgrswiL4AGviAOcbzfYCAwContinue the Conversation in the Official Film School'd Discussion Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/filmschoold

Today on the show we have award-winning filmmaker, actress, author, speaker, women in film activist and force of nature Naomi McDougall Jones. Many of the IFH Tribe might remember Naomi from her first appearance on the show talking about her distribution adventures with her film Bite Me. You can listen to that episode here: Making Money Self Distributing Your Indie Film with Naomi McDougall JonesBite Me, is a subversive romantic comedy about a real-life vampire and the IRS agent who audits her. The film premiered at Cinequest, won Best Feature Film at VTXIFF, and then went on to the innovative, paradigm-shifting Joyful Vampire Tour of America in summer 2019, a 51-screening, 40-city, three-month, RV-fueled eventized tour that involved Joyful Vampire Balls, capes, a docu-series and a whole lot of joy. Naomi's first book, The Wrong Kind of Women: Inside Our Revolution to Dismantle the Gods of Hollywood, is now available wherever books are sold in hardcover, audiobook, and e-book. It debuted as the #1 New Release on Amazon. It is a brutally honest look at the systemic exclusion of women in film—an industry with massive cultural influence—and how, in response, women are making space in cinema for their voices to be heard.Naomi has been a vocal advocate for bringing gender parity to film, both on and off-screen. She has spoken at film festivals and conferences around the world and written extensively on this subject. Naomi's TEDTalk on these issues and what to do about them, “What it's Like to Be a Woman in Hollywood, has been viewed over a million times. Enjoy my eye-opening conversation with Naomi McDougall Jones.

Maitland Ward is an adult film star and author of a new book called Rated X: How Porn Liberated Me from Hollywood. Best known for her role as Rachel Maguire on Boy Meets World, Maitland enjoyed a successful career as a Hollywood actress before making the transition into the adult film industry. Her videos and photos on OnlyFans now earn her over $1 million per year. And that's in addition to the money she makes making adult films. Rated X is her first book, and I gotta tell you, I found it to be surprisingly well written. She's a good writer. You're also going to find her both smart, articulate and disarmingly normal. She's like a regular person who just happens to have a very, very unique job. In today's interview, we discuss how she got into acting in the first place, Maitland's experience on Boy Meets World, the cold indifference of Hollywood, which she experienced as she approached her 30th birthday, how and why she got started on OnlyFans, how her husband (that's right, her husband) and her parents (that's right, her parents) feel about her burgeoning career in pornography. How having sex on camera is an expression of her true identity and what she gets out of her work besides an enormous amount of money. Hey friend (this means you), please rate and review this episode of Crazy Money here.

The #MeToo movement revealed the very ugly side of Hollywood's misogyny with hundreds of claims of sexual harassment and assault made not just against Harvey Weinstein but many other men working in the industry. What is surprising is that the film industry started out with many women filmmakers. It was only once the industry really started to make money that were women pushed aside. Can they now muscle their way back into more positions of influence?
