Temporal sensitivity for achromatic and chromatic flicker across the visual cortex

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.07.24.550403v1?rss=1 Authors: Gentile, C. P., Spitschan, M., Taskin, H. O., Bock, A. S., Aguirre, G. K. Abstract: The classes of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) receive different combinations of L, M, and S cone inputs and give rise to one achromatic and two chromatic post-receptoral channels. Beyond the retina, RGC outputs are subject to filtering and normalization along the geniculo-striate pathway, ultimately producing the properties of human vision. The goal of the current study was to determine temporal sensitivity across the three post-receptoral channels in subcortical and cortical regions involved in vision, to better characterize post-retinal temporal processing. We measured functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) responses at 7 Tesla from participants viewing a high-contrast, flickering, spatially-uniform wide (~140 degree) field. Stimulus flicker frequency varied logarithmically between 2 and 64 Hz and targeted the L+M+S, L-M, and S-[L+M] cone combinations. These measurements were used to create temporal sensitivity functions (TSFs) of primary visual cortex (V1) across eccentricity, and spatially averaged responses from lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), V2/V3, hV4, and MT. Functional MRI responses reflected known properties of the visual system, including higher peak temporal sensitivity to achromatic vs. chromatic stimuli, and low-pass filtering between the LGN and V1. V1 had the slowest peak temporal sensitivity across cortical regions, which increased at higher levels of the visual cortical hierarchy. Unexpectedly, peak temporal sensitivity decreased at greater eccentricities in area V1, especially for achromatic stimuli. Comparison of measured cortical responses to a model of integrated retinal output to our stimuli demonstrates that extensive filtering and amplification is applied to post-retinal signals. Concept of an achromatic stellar coronagraph and its application for detecting extrasolar planets by Bhavesh Jaiswal. on Tuesday 29 November Imaging the planets that orbit around other stars requires blocking the host star which is usually 8-10 orders of magnitude brighter than the planets. This is achieved with the help of a stellar coronagraph. In the current work, a concept of a new type of stellar coronagraph is introduced where the star light is blocked by a linear polarizer in the collimated beam. It is based on differential rotation between the linear polarization state of planet light and that of star light. This is achieved with the help of a set of thick birefringent crystals in the collimated beam of a telescope where the planet light is made to travel extra optical path length compared to star light. By adjusting the orientation and thickness of the crystal, the optical path length can be made to cause a phase difference of {pi}, just enough to rotate the initial plane of polarization by 90{deg} for planet-light without affecting the star light. Theoretical calculations involving the phase difference due to birefringent crystals are presented here along with the basic configuration and design. It is shown that the design blocks the star light identically at all wavelengths. Application of this concept for detecting Earth-like extrasolar planet is discussed using a one-meter class telescope. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.14624v1

In this podcast episode, MRS Bulletin's Sophia Chen interviews Adam Kubec at Swiss startup XRNanotech and research team member Marie-Christine Zdora of the Paul Scherrer Institut about their proof-of-principle of an x-ray achromatic lens. The lens consist of a focusing diffractive and a defocusing refractive optical element that achieves imaging of a range of wavelengths without having to move the sample. The researchers used two different diffractive lenses, one made from nickel and one with gold. To fabricate the refractive lens, they used a nanoscale 3D printing technique known as two-photon polymerization. This work was published in a recent issue of Nature Communications (doi:10.1038/s41467-022-28902-8).

Everything is always all there. And everything has always been there. Whether you're looking, whether you knew where to look... Everything has always been there. Everything has always been this way. It's been all these ways all at once. You can choose what you look at, what you focus on, what you see, what patterns you notice. All the things are always happening altogether, and you tune in, and you tune out, and you tune... and you see what you are, and you see what you see, and you see what you recognize. And you see what creates interference patterns, what seems discordant. And you don't notice other things. You don't notice them until they're pointed out. You don't notice them until you grow that part of yourself. You don't notice them because you don't have a name for them, your language doesn't have a way. You don't notice them because they conflict with what you've been taught, because you don't believe in them, because you've been taught to be afraid of them. You don't notice them because they're in opposition to everything you believe in. But they're still all there. They're still all around you. The thing you just learned about, it's always been there. That new change in yourself, it's always been there. Things that seem good, things that seem evil, things that attract you. It's always been there. Nothing has ever changed. Except your awareness, and your awareness is going to keep changing. It's going to keep arcing, and developing, and looping, all the way 'til the end. And the only thing that's changing in the world is everyone's awareness. All the matter, the matter, the bits, they're the same. It might be in a different order, but they're the same. So, you can change your awareness. You can notice the awareness of others. Change... you can change, you can change others' awareness. You can't change. You can't change. You can't change anything. And everything that's happening, everything that's going on right now, it's never going to end, it's never going to start. You can try to own it, you can try to make it. You can be frustrated with it, you can walk away from it, you can not look at it, but it's still going to be there. This is here. This is in the air, and you can tune into the frequency that it's vibrating at, and you can choose to resonate with it, or you can lock into different frequencies. You can turn down your consciousness. You can overdose on something. But it's still going to be here, because it's here. It's here now. You can never get away from your past. It's here now in the frequency. You can look away. Just keep looking away. Keep looking at things to help you look away. If you focus on this point, you don't have to see that one. Keep turning things up louder and louder. The hair follicles in your eardrums...everything can be used up. You can use it all up. Or you can make it as healthy as it can be. And you can responsibly choose which things you look at, and what you think about. You can realize that your attention is your own. You can think about the responsibilities you have to use it. And you can actually make everything better. And there goes the world, getting better and better, thanks to you.
