How to really know what your audience is thinking. To be a great communicator, you have to get out of your own head. But that's not all, says Matt Lieberman. According to him, you also have to get into the head of someone else.“Mind-reading is this remarkable ability that humans have,” explains Lieberman, a professor of psychology, director of UCLA's Social Cognitive Neuroscience Lab, and author of Social: Why Our Brains Are Wired to Connect. But even as we engage in perspective-taking, Lieberman says our attempts to mind-read often miss the mark. Instead, he advocates for “perspective-getting” — where we don't just intuit what others think, we ask them directly. “That is where more productive conversation comes from,” he says.In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Lieberman and host Matt Abrahams explore insights from social neuroscience that can help us communicate more effectively. From understanding how our brains process social interactions to recognizing our own assumptions, he reveals why successful communication requires both humility and genuine curiosity about how others see the world.Episode Reference Links:Matt Lieberman Matt's Book: Social: Why Our Brains Are Wired to ConnectEp.24 Feelings First: How Emotion Shapes Our Communication, Decisions, and ExperiencesEp.39 Brains Love Stories: How Leveraging Neuroscience Can Capture People's Emotions Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:14) - The Social Brain (05:15) - Neuroscience in Business (07:14) - The Science of Persuasion (11:46) - Social Pain & Connection (15:04) - Tackling Loneliness (17:56) - The Final Three Questions (24:01) - Conclusion ********Become a Faster Smarter Supporter by joining TFTS Premium.

In this episode, we dive into the challenging yet transformative message from James 1:2-4. Pain and trials are universal experiences, but James invites us to see them not as barriers to growth but as tools in God's hands. This message explores how the trials we endure can produce perseverance, deepen our faith, and ultimately shape us into people of maturity and wisdom.Drawing from real-life stories and biblical insights, we discuss the countercultural idea of considering it pure joy when faced with hardship. What does it mean to trust God's purposes in the middle of pain? How can we lean into His promise of wisdom when we feel lost or overwhelmed?Join us as we uncover the hidden blessings that come through perseverance and learn to see pain not as an end, but as part of the progress God is making in and through us. Whether you're in a season of difficulty or want to prepare your heart for future challenges, this message offers hope, encouragement, and practical steps to grow in faith.About our Speaker, Pastor Alan Hannah:For the past 25 years, Alan Hannah has served the local church in full time ministry. He has spent the majority of that time as a pastor at three different churches in Virginia, Texas, and Pennsylvania, where he currently resides. He invested much of his energy into raising the bar of authenticity and excellence, leadership, and developing worship artists and creatives. In 2014, God began preparing Alan for a transition into the role of lead pastor. Teaching and preaching were gifts God was developing and stirring in his heart, along with a passion for creating healthy, and empowered church teams. He completed a Master of Divinity from Liberty University Theological Seminary, and in January of 2020, was hired as the next Lead Pastor at Allegheny Center Alliance Church on the North Side of Pittsburgh, PA.Alan completed his undergraduate work at Oral Roberts University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Organizational & Interpersonal Communication with a minor in TV & Radio. This is also where he met his wife Tara. They have two children, Alex and Kadyn. Alan is an avid sports fan who roots for his hometown Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins. "The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places." - Ernest Hemingway Guest Introduction: Hey there, friend! Welcome to Exploring the Seasons of Life: Travel Edition! I'm Cindy MacMillan, your host and founder of Pangea World Travel Agency. Whether you're a busy midlife professional, an empty nester, or a woman with a heart for adventure, you're in the right place! This podcast isn't just about travel—it's about how travel connects with the broader themes of life: growth, discovery, and reinvention. Join me and inspiring guests as we share personal stories of adventure and meaningful transformation. We'll explore everything from hidden travel gems to life-changing experiences. So grab your coffee, get cozy, and let's embark on this adventure together! Now, it's my pleasure to introduce today's guest, Susan Houts. Susan Houts is a world traveler, former educator, and current Community Liaison for Assisting Hands Home Care here in Brevard, Florida. After serving as an Associate Professor of Public Speaking and Interpersonal Communication at Eastern Florida State College for 12 years, she transitioned into Senior Care after seeing the need for community education in this area. She grew up in Rockledge, Florida, and currently lives in Palm Bay with her husband of 16 years, Aaron. Here's a glimpse of our conversation: 2:15 I've spoken to many people who are afraid to leave because they're the primary caregiver for someone. But this can be a great opportunity to benefit both the person receiving care and the caregiver, allowing them to continue living their lives without worry. 6:01 In our community, there's a phrase that resonates with travelers: 'Take your oxygen first.' On a plane, they always instruct you to put your own oxygen mask on before helping a child or anyone else. The reason is simple: if you pass out, you won't be able to help anyone. 6:46 It's important to prepare in advance by reaching out to the community and using resources like Assisting Hands and the healthcare community to set up care ahead of time. If you leave it as an afterthought, you might find yourself on your trip, unable to fully enjoy it because you're constantly worried about what's happening at home. 8:35 If you have a company, ask others for recommendations. When we have a loved one in need of care—whether it's a senior or someone with health issues—it often feels like we're the only ones going through it. It feels very personal and can affect every part of our lives. But remember, you're not alone in this. 13:36 The really interesting thing about care, especially that I've learned in the senior care world, is that everybody's needs are completely different. Completely different, right? 34:33 I'd like to share one more tip I got from a friend who is a senior care advisor. I love her advice: when you're looking for support, whether before your trip or even during, focus on getting help with the task you dislike the most. Know your audience and tailor the message for them.In high-stakes communication, every word counts. For Jen Psaki, that means knowing who she's talking to — so she knows just what to say.As the former White House Press Secretary and current host of Inside with Jen Psaki on MSNBC, Psaki has discovered that communication isn't about “saying the most words or saying them the loudest,” but about knowing your audience well enough to tailor the message just for them. “You need to think about how you're going to get your audience to listen to you,” she says. “The goal of communicating is to crack the door open so somebody wants to hear more.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Psaki and host Matt Abrahams explore her approach to strategic communication: identifying your audience and using what you know to engage with them and get them to engage with you.Episode Reference Links:Jen Psaki Jen's Book: Say MoreEp.22 Under Pressure How to Communicate Clearly and Timely During Crisis Website / YouTube Ep.155 Can We Be Candid? In this episode, Lisa and Jessica discuss:The three types of college support services for neurodiverse students.Recognizing what support services your student used in high school including invisible supports they may need to be successful. How to assess the quality of disability services at colleges.Preparing your neurodiverse teen for independence and self-advocacy.Key Takeaways: Learning differences, from dyscalculia to autism to ADHD and so many more, are on a wide spectrum, and each student has different needs. You will want to identify what was most important for your student's success. The invisible support structures are those not on an IEP. They may look like medication support, parent monitoring of school work, or even waking your student in the morning. It is a team approach to support your student in high school with written and invisible structures. It should also be a team approach to understanding what is key to your student's success going into college.By ADA regulations, all colleges that receive federal financial aid must provide basic support. But if your student needs more coordinated or structured support, you will want to seek that out during the college search process. The admissions office does not speak with the accessibility office - you and your student should speak to those support offices directly. “You have to understand that that IEP does not go to college, so it will not look the same. High schools have to ensure success. Colleges only have to ensure access.” – Jessica NelsonAbout Jessica Nelson: Although Jessica didn't initially set out to work in college admissions after earning her B.A. in Speech Communications from Miami University (OH) and M.A. in Interpersonal Communication from the University of Iowa, a temporary position as an admissions counselor at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL, turned into a career spanning over 16 years in college admissions and college counseling, including a stint as an application reader at Georgia Tech.Over the years, Jessica has become a trusted expert working with students with learning differences and helping them find colleges where they can thrive. Jessica is currently a college counselor with Collegewise, one of the largest private counseling companies in the United States. Collegewise's 70 admissions experts help students identify the best possible school they can flourish in while also bringing a sense of calm and joy to the college application process. Please be aware that this conversation contains brief references to sexual violence and wrongful imprisonment....What is your “sphere of influence” and how can you change how you show up to it?...John Stewart served on the faculty of the Department of Communication at the University of Washington from 1969 to 2001; was Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Dubuque; and became Special Assistant to the President of UD in 2010, retiring in 2016 to focus his training and consulting efforts on diversity-equity-inclusion (DEI) projects. Between 1973 and 2013, John published 11 editions of the widely-adopted Bridges Not Walls: A Book About Interpersonal Communication. In 2017 he published Personal Communicating and Racial Equity, 2nd. ed. (2017), and his most recent book is Dismantling Racism One On One: Uniqueness Narrative Equity (2023). John contributed the chapter “Through Empathizing to Co-constructing Uniquenesses” to the open access book, Through Your Eyes: Research and New Perspectives on Empathy (2024). Today, John and Abbie discuss the power of communication, “co-constructing uniquenesses,” and interpersonal instances of racism in a larger context of systemic racism and white supremacy. John offers three ways to dismantle racism one on one: offering and inviting reflections, offering and inviting choices, and offering and inviting feelings. Abbie and John explore the importance of offerings and invitations in conversation for creating felt trust. John describes “co-constructing uniqueness” as a step beyond empathy. ...Stories Lived. But to convey deeper meaning, we need a broader color palette, which Dana Carney says requires the mastery of nonverbal communication. We often focus on the words that we say when honing our communication, but according to Carney, there are many instances “where nonverbals start to be more meaningful than verbals.” A professor at Berkeley's Haas School of Business and the George Quist Chair in Business Ethics, Carney researches the nonverbal ways in which we communicate our biases, our preferences, our power, and our status. As Carney explores in her forthcoming book, The Five Nonverbal Rules of Power, there are several key areas of nonverbal behavior that we need to grasp in order to fully tap our potential as communicators. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, she and host Matt Abrahams discuss how to read the nonverbal communication of others — and how to gain control of the nonverbals we express to the world.Think Fast, Talk Smart is a podcast produced by Stanford Graduate School of Business. “Full-body orgasms, full-heart orgasms, full-soul orgasms, full-mind orgasms, and full-memories orgasms do exist. Full-touch orgasms, full-taste orgasms, full-sight orgasms, full-hearing orgasms, and full-smell orgasms also exist. I acknowledge that personality orgasms and temperament orgasms are pleasurable. Cindy Esliger talks about the pivotal role asking open-ended questions and keenly listening to the answers plays, not just in effective communication, but in navigating office politics. Why should we learn to listen better and why would we want to keep colleagues talking? As Cindy points out, learning more about people's views and motives leads to understanding what drives them and being able to connect. Cultivating active listening skills is how we elevate our communication strategies. Active listening is not just hearing the words being said but involves a genuine effort to understand the speaker's perspective and message. Coupled with reflective listening, summarizing what was said to ensure you understand, this is a powerful tool for improving office politics. Cindy explains all the nuances of engagement, including focus and body language, that improve our listening. There is so much more to listening than simply not talking. Cindy lays out all the tools at our disposal, all the ways in which we can school ourselves to listen openly, ask open questions, reflect the speaker's words to ensure understanding, and move the listening into a collaborative conversation. She narrows in on how to teach ourselves to modulate our voice and tone while also interpreting the tone others use and picking up subtle communication cues that allow deeper insight into a colleague's stance. These are the ways in which we make progress through office dynamics and form valuable connections to aid in our growth.Resources discussed in this episode:Guide to Becoming A Better ListenerAstronomic AudioConfidence Collective—Contact Cindy Esliger Career Confidence Coaching: website | instagram | facebook | linkedin | email

Dating can feel like a rollercoaster; The butterflies, worrying if they're into you, if you're both on the same page, and all the heavy lifting of truly connecting. Now imagine dating without any help… No liquid courage to numb the big emotions. It can feel like walking a tightrope without a net! In today's episode, I chat with Shaun Galanos on his journey of kicking alcohol to the curb. He talks about why he quit drinking and how it affected his relationships. We dive into the nitty-gritty of dating, the real talk on building connections that aren't just skin deep, and the art of connecting with someone, without that safety net of a glass in your hand. Imagine sitting across from someone, feeling all those big emotions (the good, the bad, the awkward), and doing it stone-cold sober. We tackle all the hot topics and even give some hot takes. Shaun Galanos is a renowned love coach, host of The Love Drive podcast, and an expert in teaching intimacy and communication skills. He got his Bachelor's Degree in Interpersonal Communication from UC Santa Barbara and certifications in Personal and Professional Coaching and Rape Crisis Counseling. Shaun has a well-rounded and empathetic approach to relationship coaching. His podcast, The Love Drive, is a treasure trove of insights into love, relationships, and personal growth. In addition to his podcast, Shaun also creates online courses focused on improving relationships through better communication and intimacy skills. When he's not teaching courses on intimacy and communication or recording his podcast, he's continuing to learn about love, working on this relationship with his partner, and building community in Montreal. [00:01 - 12:20] Shaun's Journey to Sobriety and Self-Discovery Shaun shares his early struggles with emotional regulation, leading to substance use and ultimately a high-functioning alcoholic lifestyle. Shaun's turning point came with the realization that alcohol stunted his growth in all life aspects. Shaun Sought therapy and joined AA at the age of 25. It's easier to stop and stay stopped than it is to stop, start, and stop again [12:21 - 27:16] Awkward or Natural? Embracing Authentic Connections in Sober Dating Shaun's transition to sobriety wasn't a magic solution. Instead, it was a starting point for genuine self-discovery. Shaun talks about how he dealt with his big emotions by confiding in many people and dispersing the heaviness of his life transformation. Shaun and Amanda discuss dating sober; their experiences and advice for connecting with aligned people. Dating sober can feel awkward because we are rewiring our brains to embrace natural experiences. [27:17 - 33:34] How to Overcome Anxiety When Dating Sober Anxiety in dating without alcohol is inevitable, confronting it head-on is key. For most the anxiety doesn't go away so just embrace the awkwardness. It becomes more manageable over time As you date more, your confidence increases, and your reliance on others' opinions decreases. Look for partners who respect and appreciate your sobriety. They should view it as an advantage rather than a drawback. [33:35 - 44:02] Sober Sex, Hot Takes, Figuring Out Your Values, and Dating App Tips Shaun stresses the importance of confronting and communicating anxieties, especially in intimate settings. Sex especially when sober is going to be awkward – That's ok! That's what makes it exciting and special. If you feel anxious about having sex sober, especially if it's new to you, it's ok to communicate that. Don't get too hung up on attachment styles. Relationships are about growing together. Figure out what values are important to you and then allow both of you to grow together. Shaun shares his advice on how to get more aligned matches on dating apps by adjusting your profile to be more honest about your lifestyle. [44:03 - 49:00] Can You Get Sober with a Non-Sober Partner? Choosing sobriety will significantly affect your relationship, especially if you used to drink with your partner. Any huge life change requires an adjustment period Your decision to go sober can reveal a lot about your partner; It can show you how supportive they are of your wellness or how insecure they might be about their lifestyle. It's important to assess whether a relationship can withstand and support sobriety. Follow Shaun Galanos! And then you're like, holy sh*t, that was my solution to a lot of problems that I have, and the problems now are still here. So how are we going to deal with these problems?” – Shaun Galanos "I don't think that you are going to be able to get rid of the anxiety. Have you ever misinterpreted what someone said? We all have. Miscommunication can be complex and lead to all sorts of trouble, and what we SAY isn't always what someone HEARS.Understanding how this works and why it happens can be useful in both personal and professional relationships. In this episode, Eddie and I explored why what we SAY and what someone HEARS can be profoundly different.A core reason for this is that we frame any communication from our own perspective, distorting the original message to fit within a certain context. We also discuss why it's so important to recognize that our own perception is not necessarily the same as the other person's.Communication lies at the heart of every relationship. Whether it's with our friends, family, colleagues, or strangers, we need to be aware of how our words are received. We need to be mindful of the contexts we communicate and be open to different interpretations.Only then can we truly build meaningful and lasting connections with those around us?
