Erin Marlow of It's a Fandom Thing joins Nicole and Ryan to talk about the 1994 Oliver Stone film, Natural Born Killers. It began as a Quentin Tarantino script before Oliver Stone turned it into an entirely different thing, which is just one of many controversies that surround this film. What's not controversial is the greatness of the Natural Born Killers Soundtrack. Trent Reznor currated the soundtrack and contributed two Nine Inch Nails to the soundtrack, specifically writing "Burn" for the film. The soundtrack also features songs from Leonard Cohen, Lard, L7, The Cowboy Junkies, Peter Gabriel and more.Chapters00:00:00 Introducing Erin of It's a Fandom Thing and Why She Chose Natural Born Killers17:34 Trent Reznor - Soundtrack Currator / Serial Killer Afficionado28:39 Tarantino Meets Johnny Cash and Casting the Leads of the Film39:05 The Bands on the Natural Born Killer Soundtrack43:05 Juliette Lewis' Breakthrough Peformance51:47 The 90 Aesthetics, Commercials and Gangsta Rap59:17 Back to the Soundtrack1:07:30 One Last Question1:13:37 Thank You's and GoodbyesIt's a Fandom Thing Socials:TikTokBlueskyInstagram
Cowboy Junkies came onto the scene in 1985 and after 40 years (mostly on the road) they are still going strong and headed to Annapolis and Rams Head On Stage for a single show on April 13th! Today, we hopped on the phone with Mike Timmins, founder, guitarist, and songwriter, to chat about the upcoming show, what they are working on, and which late-night show was the favorite. A forty-year career in music is astonishing, but even more so for two brothers and a sister. While my kids can't go twenty minutes without picking a fight, Mike tells us the secret to life on the road with Margo and Peter, along with kindergarten bestie Alan! Don't miss the opportunity to see the Junkies in the intimate setting at Rams Head On Stage-- the sultry, sexy, intoxicating sound is made for the room! And for those concerned, being Canadian and all-- they are tariff-free! We asked! But for now, have a listen now, and then grab some tickets! Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! In case you hadn't noticed, we love a good cover version! This episode, we're looking at covers - staples, covers from strange sources, and some songs that have had a LOT of covers, including a bunch of covers of Bowie's “Heroes”. Our Album You Must Hear before You Die is “Is This It?” by The Strokes. This punk/Britpop-influenced album got rave reviews on release in 2001 from Rolling Stone, The Village Voice, and New Musical Express. We're not convinced. In Knockin' on Heaven's Door, we mourn the loss of Wayne Osmond (of the Osmond Brothers), Chad Morgan, the Aussie country great, and Peter Yarrow, of Peter, Paul and Mary. We hope they get to sing a rousing chorus of “Puff the Magic Dragon together. As usual, there's heaps of fun. Enjoy!! On June 2nd 2023, Cowboy Junkies release their new album, “Such Ferocious Beauty”, an album of ten songs that is up there with anything they've done right across their career. To celebrate its release, we've got a two part conversation with Michael Timmins about the thinking behind the record, its themes and its recording process. Added to that, there's plenty of music both from the record itself as well as the songwriting and early production demos. In this second part of our "Such Ferocious Beauty" special, there are six songs still to cover. Come on, dive straight in...To watch the video for "Hard To Build. Easy To Break.", click here. Few bands have maintained such consistent vision, quality and stability as Cowboy Junkies. The same people who made the 1986 debut album Whites Off Earth Now!! and the recorded-around-one-mic breakthrough The Trinity Session (1988) also made their new album, Such Ferocious Beauty. Throughout, Michael Timmins has been the primary songwriter and plays quietly roaring guitar leads while his sister Margo supplies hushed, haunting vocals, brother Peter drums and longtime friend Alan Anton plays bass. Michael Timmins discusses what has changed and not changed about his songwriting, how Lou Reed reacted to their version of “Sweet Jane,” the keys to choosing cover songs, how the band falls into a hypnotic groove on stage, and whether they ever were in danger of splintering. Also, are Cowboy Junkies as serious as they appear?
A morality - or immorality - tale for a modern age "Simon Keeper" looks at how greed can, sometimes, bring business to its knees, and, on the opposite side of the coin, how once a scammer, always a scammer...Recorded originally for "Open", using the songwriting demo, the "Open" mix and the finished version on "One Soul Now", Michael Timmins. and Alan Anton go through the story of bringing "Simon Keeper" to life and also ponder just how tough it is to put a concert set list together when you've been making records for over 35 years...To make sure you don't miss out on each weekly episode, remember to subscribe to "Music Is The Drug" at your favourite podcast provider - Apple, Amazon, Google, Spotify, Deezer, Stitcher, TuneIn, Podchaser and all the rest...To pre-order the band's upcoming album, "Such Ferocious Beauty", click here. What's good, ParaPower Mappers? It's another installment of “The Secret History of MasSUSchusetts” & the return to our “Historical Materia Ultima” miniseries, as we draw the story of John Winthrop the Younger's Rosicrucian alchemical plantation project to a close. Many thanks to @MKstorie (Twitter) for the very chill, glyph-y episode artwork! Give 'em a follow, y'all. Can you spy the Monas Hieroglyphica? Songs: | Franz Liszt - "Hungarian Rhapsody #2" | | X - "Nausea" | | The Cowboy Junkies - "Sir Francis Bacon at the Net" | This episode includes: A comprehensive list of the various alchemists & occultists who were part of the collegium that orbited Winthrop Jr.; more colonial prospecting for precious minerals (this time the Brewsters & Endecotts); alchemical economic development schemes, like Winthrop's saltpeter manufacturing plant; the alchemist Johann Glauber's sodium nitrate propagandizing & claim that it is the “universal menstruum”; copies of Agrippa's Occult Philosophy making the rounds in NE; the fact that French's translation was dedicated to Robert Child; the Paracelsian prophecy of the alchemical messiah Elias Arista; Winthrop's involvement in the founding of Yale; Brewster's alchemical secrets; Winthrop the Younger's alchemedical cures, including Rubila, which his descendants marketed the shit out of; an Oliver Wendell Holmes sighting; the miserableness of frontier medical practices, which primarily involved purging (puke & shit); humoral theory and its correspondences w/ the Aristotelian elements; the hype for pansophia highlighting the Enlightenment view of the world as interlocking systems; pansophia & alchemy's impact on the emergence of capitalism; alchemical secrecy = profit motive; other metallurgical cures; a personal favorite—the “weapon salve”, Sir Kenelm Digby's sympathetic magickal remedy which was supposed to heal wounds over distance thru the application of salves to the weapon that caused the wound (plus the obligatory masturbation jokes LOL); the connection between healing ability, status, & power… …a lot of lists in this one, one being a rundown of known alchemists in colonial New England—Mathers, Bulkeley, Stoughton, Danforth, Ezra Stiles, Hoar, Stiles, Child, Winthrops, etc.—powerful men who were ministers, college presidents, doctors, governors, & magistrates (a couple even sitting on the Court of Oyer & Terminer during the Salem trials); the story of alchemist Samuel Danforth Sr.'s “execution sermon” (supposedly the first ever), which was delivered at the execution of the teenager Benjamin Goad who had been found guilty of bestiality & which Danforth later published as a tract (slimey)... …Winthrop the Younger's status as first colonial member of the Royal Society; the ascent of Charles II; Winthrop's trip to London around the time of his coronation; the coincident charters for the Royal Society, Board of Trade, Council for Plantations, & Society for the Propagation of the Gospel; the Royal Society's empire-building & intelligence-gathering purpose; Winthrop's relationship w/ Benjamin Worsley (former surveyor general of Ireland & alchemist), Lord Brereton, Robert Boyle, Sir Robert Moray, Elias Ashmole, the Hartlib Circle, etc., further explicating the closeness of Rosicrucianism, Freemasonry, & the R.S.; the intersection of espionage, magic, & science in the Society; Boyle's emphasis on the dual exploitation of information for divine knowledge & profit; a new charter for Connecticut; the Royal Society's investment in the Royal African Company (John Locke, F.R.S. a managing member) & the East India Co., showing the Society's role in the triangular trade; the Royal Society's conceptual origins in the Fama Fraternitatis & Francis Bacon's New Atlantis (specifically the symbol of Solomon's House); a note about Society members' interest in technology (evoking John Dee); & lastly, a wonderment about science-fiction-as-magickal-rewriting-of-reality & its connection to R.S.
"Where Are You Tonight?" was first released on "The Caution Horses" in 1990, was on last year's "Sharon" release which looked at the band's first pass at recording that material, was included in the "200 More Miles" live album and is still often included in the live set to this day. So what makes a song such a hardy perennial in the Junkies' huge catalogue, why has it endured and where did it spring from in the first place?Michael Timmins and Alan Anton have the answers on this episode of "Music Is The Drug"...To make sure you don't miss out on each weekly episode of "Music Is The Drug", remember to subscribe to "Music Is The Drug" at your favourite podcast provider - Apple, Amazon, Google, Spotify, Audible, Deezer, Stitcher, TuneIn, Podchaser and all the rest...To pre-order the band's upcoming album, "Such Ferocious Beauty", click here. When Cowboy Junkies were putting together "Early 21st Century Blues" in 2005, their response to a post 9/11 world where the possibility of greater understanding and unity had, as ever being bulldozed by the rush to war, they were looking to find songs with an anti-violence message, in all the possible senses. On the 2004 "One Soul Now" tour, they had been playing George Harrison's "Isn't It A Pity", and that was a song that translated perfectly to that album's themes. In this episode, we revisit the live and studio versions of "Isn't It A Pity?" and Michael Timmins and Alan Anton talk us through the intricacies of capturing the essence of Harrison's typically idiosyncratic song. In this episode, it's the turn of "Hard To Build. Easy To Break.", another new song from the band's upcoming album, "Such Ferocious Beauty", to come under the spotlight.Like "What I Lost", the song is a co-write by Michael Timmins and Alan Anton and they are both here to talk us through it, along with some exclusive clips from the songwriting demo to boot. Musically built on a loping groove that has roots that you might not immediately associate the Junkies with, the lyric looks at both the personal and the political and our growing addiction to tearing things down just for the sake of it.To listen to "Hard To Build. Cowboy Junkies were in the midst of recording 'Renmin Park' for what became the 'Nomad Series' when they heard of the sad death of Vic Chestnut on Christmas Eve 2009.Vic had toured with and supported the band on a number of occasions and their immediate reaction was to produce an album that was a tribute to him and his songs.'Demons' was the upshot and from that album, in this episode Michael Timmins and Alan Anton discuss Vic's song 'Supernatural' and the joys and challenges of covering material by someone just as idiosyncratic as Vic Chesnutt. In our last episode, we talked about a brand new song, "What I Lost", from the band's upcoming new album, "Such Ferocious Beauty". In it, Michael Timmins referenced its thematic links with "Follower 2", a song from "AtThe End Of Paths Taken", so what better time to cover that song than in this episode?Mike and Alan Anton discuss the thinking behind the song, including the string section that so illuminates the track. Going back to Cowboy Junkies' first album, "Whites Of Earth Now!!", in this episode, Michael Timmins and Alan Anton take a look at the whys and wherefores behind the inclusion of Bruce Springsteen's "State Trooper" on a record that otherwise concentrates mainly on earlier blues performers like Robert Johnson and John Lee Hooker. Dark, brooding, intense, Springsteen's opus to a police encounter on the freeway might well have been dictated to him by Johnson from the other side, wondering where the crossroads went and why there are all these six lane highways instead. For the band, recently slimmed down to a four piece following the departure of John Timmins, this is the sound of them handling that extra space and settling into some of the principles that have defined much of their music ever since. In this episode, we explore how they got there and the vital role of producer Peter Moore in helping them capture it.To make sure you don't miss out on each weekly episode, remember to subscribe to "Music Is The Drug" at your favourite podcast provider - Apple, Amazon, Google, Spotify, Deezer, Stitcher, TuneIn, Podchaser and all the rest..."Cowboy Junkies - Music Is The Drug" is hosted by Dave Bowler, author of the authorised biography of the band. Some songs never quite make it onto albums not because they're not up to standard, but because they simply refuse to fit in with all the other songs. In the olden days, they'd get scooped up and used on the b-side of a single or 12", but in the modern world, they tend to have to wait until a band is ready to issue a 'rarities' stye record. "Ikea Parking Lot" is one of those songs and when you listen to it, you can see why. Eerie, atmospheric, even harrowing, what song would you put it before it or after it? So it was that it found its way into the public domain on the fourth CD in the "Notes Falling Slow" box set - and Cowboy Junkies' musical story is richer for having it out there for people to hear. Michael Timmins and Alan Anton take us through the song, from arguments over the title to the joys of living in a cold climate, from how they find those haunting keyboard sounds to embracing - or not - the inner Geddy Lee...To make sure you don't miss out on each weekly episode, remember to subscribe to "Music Is The Drug" at your favourite podcast provider - Apple, Amazon, Google, Spotify, Deezer, Stitcher, TuneIn, Podchaser and all the rest..."Cowboy Junkies - Music Is The Drug" is hosted by Dave Bowler, author of the authorised biography of the band.
