It's one thing to be passionate about something that might make for a better world. It's another thing to be passionate about power or wealth or influence. Probably we all have both kinds of passion. I know I do. But if I pay attention, I can feel the difference.In the mindfulness teachings, it's considered unfortunate to nurture passion for anything that could cause harm. There's no judgment because, like I said, probably we all do because…we're human. The key is knowing the difference. When I feel fiery and also remember to check in, and I realize what kind of fire I'm feeling, I have a choice. Move forward, when it's a passion that might heal the world. Let go, when it's not. A simple way to avoid misfortune. Not always easy, but simple.L'shana tova to those celebrating, and wishing everyone a sweet year.

In the early 11th century BCE, the Egyptian official Wen-Amun was dispatched on a diplomatic mission to Byblos to acquire timber for the sacred barque of Amun-Ra. His journey quickly unraveled -- pursued by the Tjekker, one of the Sea Peoples active in the region -- Wen-Amun was blown off course and landed in Alashiya (Cyprus). There, he faced a hostile reception, as the locals approached seemingly intent on violence. Brought before Princess Hatiba, Wen-Amun, desperate and stranded, called out to see if anyone could understand Egyptian. Remarkably, one man stepped forward to translate his plea. At this pivotal moment, the narrative breaks off, leaving Wen-Amun's fate unknown. Yet his misadventure offers a striking glimpse into Egypt's waning influence abroad and the diplomatic uncertainty of the time. At the same time, the presence of an Egyptian speaker in Cyprus points to the deep interconnectivity of the Late Bronze Age world -- an idea we'll explore further in our next episode with Dr. Louise Steel, as we examine the ties between Cyprus and Egypt during this formative period.

682. Seth Pevey, part 2 of our conversation with Seth Pevey, who writes mystery fiction. Born in Louisiana, Seth spent many years working as a teacher and journalist in Asia before returning to his roots. He now writes fiction and non-fiction from his country home outside of New Orleans, drawing deep inspiration from the local landscape to craft rich, noir-infused Southern Gothic. Our lives are steered by uncertainties from the merely inconvenient to the life-altering disruptive. Stories abound in our life circumstances and yet we say, “Why bother with risking the courage to step out, to venture forth, to gather those stories despite the uncertainty?" I'll tell you why! We have a duty to discover and share our stories. For whom? For us! Telling our stories to ourselves helps us understand who we are, make sense of the circumstances of our lives, find meaning in “courageous perseverance in the face of impossible odds.“ You know what I'm talking about. What are you afraid of? Storytelling is about being brave enough, vulnerable enough, authentic enough to face our story, to share our story and if done well will invite our listeners to care. When we share our misfortunes with humor, confidence and ease we can lift others. “Each One Lift One” is the way we've been carried along so that we can do the same for someone else. When someone hears our story they feel hopeful, better. “What! You, too. I though I was the only one!” [C.S. Lewis]  Wow! She went through that and she's still standing. I'm not doing so bad after all. Believe it or not that's all it takes: one heartfelt story can change the course of history for a single life.
