Shortly before the opening on 28 November 2026, Cevdet Erek talks with curator Bettina Spörr about his exhibition and sound installation on Secession's façade. Cevdet Erek Secessions-Ornamentik 29.11.2025 – 22.2.2026 Some of Cevdet Erek's site-specific installations and sonic environments, placed at the intersection of sound, sculpture, and architecture, evolve around the idea of ‘sound ornamentation'. With this term, the artist refers to Adolf Loos's Ornament and Crime (1908) amongst others. This text celebrates lack of ornamentation as the mark of a ‘cultivated' society. Loos' polemic is key to a moralising discourse that once sought to purge architecture of decoration in the name of progress. In that context, ornament – associated with sensuality, femininity, and excess – was condemned as wasteful and irrational. Loos' text linked ornament to primitivism and degeneration, framing modern Western culture as superior to the supposedly ‘undeveloped'. Such rhetoric not only marginalised the close relationship between ornament and abstraction but also exposed the colonial and patriarchal logics underpinning modernist aesthetics. Erek re-enters this ideological terrain, transforming ornamentation from decorative surface into temporal, vibratory structure – one that organises space and perception. In his installations sound is not background but architecture itself – something built, inhabited, and experienced by bodies in motion. Here, ornamentation becomes a verb: it describes the act of tuning, of aligning oneself with surrounding frequencies. Through attention, the visitor becomes part of the composition. In this way, Erek's installations dissolve the boundaries between composer and listener, architecture and inhabitant. More Cevdet Erek was born in Istanbul in 1974, where he lives and works. He has developed site-specific installations and presented his work extensively in solo and group exhibitions, among others at Museumsquartier, Vienna; Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin; Art Institute of Chicago; M HKA – Museum of Contemporary Art, Antwerp; MUAC Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City; Pavilion of Turkey, 57th Venice Biennale; Spike Island, Bristol; Kunsthalle Basel, Basel; Liverpool Biennial, Liverpool; 36th Bienal de São Paulo (both 2025); Manifesta 14, Pristina (2022); Gropius Bau, Berlin; SFMOMA, San Francisco; Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt am Main; 5th Marrakech Biennale (2014); Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Sharjah Biennial 11 (2013); 9th Gwangju Biennale (2012); CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco; dOCUMENTA 13, Kassel (2012); 12th Istanbul Biennial (2011); Tate Modern, London. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA and G4BAO on Thursday the 22nd of January 2026 Last week featured a massive aurora that couldn't have been predicted in the previous report. The cause was a large Earth-directed coronal mass ejection on Sunday, the 18th of January at 18:08 UTC. The solar wind speed was above 1,100 kilometres per second, so the impact on the Earth arrived sooner than expected. The result was that the Kp index rose to 8.33 at around 1938UTC on Monday, the 19th, sparking widespread aurora. Such was its intensity that the aurora was visible from Devon, and the Kp index was still at 8 the following day. HF was badly affected with maximum usable frequencies over a 3,000km path, struggling to reach 14MHz on the 20th of January. Luckily, things have now calmed down, but it shows that it is worthwhile keeping an eye on solarham.com for daily updates. HF DX was a little sparse during the height of the geomagnetic storm, but has since recovered. 8Q7JI in the Maldives was reported as being worked on the 20m band using FT8 in the afternoon of Wednesday, the 21st of January. The KP5/NP3VI Desecheo Island DXpedition continues and has been worked from the UK by better-equipped stations. 9X2AW in Rwanda will be operating for the coming two weeks. Lastly, VP2EIO in Anguilla is active until the 31st of January using FT8 and some SSB. NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will start next week around 175, but decline to 165 by Friday, the 30th. Geomagnetic conditions are forecast to be reasonable, at least until the 28th, when we may expect a Kp index of 4 or 5 over a three-day period. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The mild unsettled weather is probably going to transform into a cold unsettled pattern during the next week. However, things will stay essentially unsettled with active weather fronts or heavy showers bringing plenty of opportunity for rain scatter on the GHz bands. After the good auroral and auroral-E propagation on the VHF bands early last week, we are in quieter territory now. However, as usual, a daily check on the Kp index will ensure you keep in touch with any sign of a recurrence. As for meteor scatter, we are now firmly in the random meteor period for several weeks and, with no major showers available, the best times will usually be in the early hours before sunrise. Lastly, a mention of Sporadic-E, which might crop up as brief spikes on the propquest.co.uk graphs. The foEs values in January show as isolated peaks from 5 to 7MHz, which is approximately equivalent to 10m and 6m. Perhaps a good way to see where the prospects exist is by using dxmaps.com to find current Sporadic-E paths on the 10 and 6m bands. A second hint can be found by looking at the Sporadic-E blog tab on Propquest to see where the main weather jet streams are located. This is because Sporadic-E paths are often associated with jet streams, especially where they cross mountain ranges like the Pyrenees or Alps. July this year sees maximum Moon declination coinciding with lowest path losses in the northern hemisphere, so there's never been a better time to try EME operating. This week, Moon declination is positive and rising, so Moon window length and peak elevation are increasing. Path losses are falling as we approach perigee on the 29th of January. 144MHz sky noise is low, rising to moderate on the 29th of January. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

Burkhardt, Susanne www.deutschlandfunkkultur.de, Fazit
On Sunday, the 7th of December, the RSGB 144MHz Affiliated Societies Contest runs from 1000 to 1400 UTC. Using all modes on the 2m band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA and G4BAO on Thursday the 27th of November Last week was a mixed bag in terms of solar activity. Yes, we had geomagnetic disturbances, but they were never really that bad, with a maximum Kp index of 5, and that was for only one three-hour period. This was mainly due to two large coronal holes on the Sun, which saw the solar wind speed increase to around 700 to 740 kilometres per second. There have been coronal mass ejections, but these have been on the far side of the Sun and so didn't affect us. Meanwhile, the solar flux index has continued its downward trend, being in the range of 116 to 121 over the week. However, there has been DX to be worked. The CDXC Slack group reports ZD7VJ on St Helena Island has been logged on the 40m band using CW. 3G0YR on Easter Island, was also worked on the 40m band using CW. Many other stations have been setting up for the CQ World Wide CW Contest over the last week, so there have been plenty of DX stations around. The DXSummit website reports 3B8/E70A in Mauritius on the 15m band using FT8, VR2KF in Hong Kong on the 10m band using CW, and S21RW in Bangladesh on the 10m band using SSB. Next week, NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will pick up, perhaps hitting 155 by the 1st of December and 175 by the 6th. Only time will tell if this prediction is correct. Meanwhile, the Kp index is forecast to start the coming week at 2, but then increase to 5 by Wednesday the 3rd. Quiet geomagnetic conditions were forecast for the duration of the CQ World Wide CW Contest. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The recent unsettled weather is continuing to dominate the big weather picture for the coming week or two. But with such a complex weather pattern, it is hard to be precise as to the predicted upcoming weather events and their timings. It's worth keeping a watch on forecasts from day to day to pick the bigger storms out in time and make sure your antennas are secure. Having said that, in propagation terms, this type of pattern is poor for any tropo prospects, and the best benefit is likely to be potential rain scatter from heavier rain. Last Wednesday saw some interesting dry-weather 24GHz propagation over the North Sea. At the Margate 24GHz WebSDR, the newly-repaired Flanders beacon ON0HVL was copiable all day until around 2000UTC, until a band of humid air hit the path from the West, taking out both ON0HVL and GB3PKT. The latter returned to normal on the morning of Thursday, the 27th. We are now exiting the broader span of the Leonids meteor shower with a gap driven by random meteors until mid-December when the Geminids arrive. There have been a few minor auroral moments, although not particularly noteworthy in a radio sense. But in the absence of any tropo, perhaps it's still worth keeping an eye on the Kp index going above 5 to provide a little excitement. Lastly, we had some more out-of-season Sporadic-E on 50MHz last week, so keep an ear open for that. For EME operators, Moon declination is rising and went positive again on Saturday, the 29th. That means more Moon time and higher peak elevation in the coming week. Path losses are low and falling further as we approach perigee on Thursday, the 4th. 144MHz sky noise is low all week, climbing to moderate at the end of the week And that's all from the propagation team this week.
There's no denying it's been a pretty dark week, but we've got a couple of bright spots for you. What could be a better job than dreaming up ways that Europe could be improved? That's what this week's guest, Johanna Fabrin, does each day at the Copenhagen think tank 21st Europe. Ahead of our miniseries Who Does It Best, Dominic sat down with Johanna to talk about the group's “blueprints” for the continent, the importance of optimism, and who, exactly, is going to pay for a fantasy train system that links all of Europe together like a massive metro line. And not to be too negative, but…we decided it was a pretty Bad Week for basically all of the western world, thanks to the Russian drone incursion into Poland and Romania. But! It was a Good Week (er, a marginally, “meekly” better week) for the European Union, which is finally—finally—taking some overdue action regarding the war in Gaza. Did Ursula von der Leyen tune into our episode from a couple of weeks ago? We suspect yes. You can learn more about what 21st Europe is up to on their website and on Instagram. Also mentioned in this episode: Simply Shada, the new Substack created by the brilliant former Europeans guest Shada Islam and the interview with Finland's President Alexander Stubb. This week's Inspiration Station recommendations are visiting countries in transition/The Wojciech Oleksiak Dua Lipa Tour of Pristina* and the David Szalay novel Flesh. *Restrictions apply, see Wojciech for details This podcast was brought to you in cooperation with Euranet Plus, the leading radio network for EU news.
No Rovers goals to talk about in Kosovo or Galway but you'll get a live report from Gerry Matthews in Pristina, and hear from Barry McCarthy (O'Neill family, Templeogue United donations) and Seamus Leavy (History of Longford Town book) before Graham Merrigan (Shamrock Rovers DAO) talks his new role and the 336th episode of 'What's The Story? Podcast'. Rookie numbers.
For decades, prolific Cuban spies working in the U.S. government, serving in high profile positions with top security clearances, have evaded American intelligence officials. Correspondent Cecilia Vega reports from Washington, D.C. and Miami on the stories of two such undercover agents, former U.S. Ambassador Victor Manuel Rocha and onetime Pentagon official Ana Montes. Cuba continues to supply one of the most dangerous exports to American adversaries around the world: American secrets. For centuries, the giants of the art world, like Michelangelo, have made a beeline for the world-famous Carrara marble quarries of Northern Tuscany, turning the white stone into masterpieces. Now, a fleet of robots has moved in, carving with pinpoint precision and sparking an art world fracas. Correspondent Bill Whitaker travels to Carrara and jumps into the fray: can a robot make art? While many contemporary A-listers are turning to robots for help, many of Italy's hammer-and-chisel brigade are up in arms. They claim Italy's artistic heritage is on the line. Many teenagers want to become pop stars, but few convince their parents to let them pack their bags and move to another country to make it big. That's precisely what Dua Lipa did when she was 15 years old, trading Pristina, Kosovo, for London. Correspondent Anderson Cooper talks with her about her journey from unknown songwriter to international sensation. In this gripping episode, we hear a detailed account from an eyewitness right at the heart of the tense NATO and Russian confrontation in Kosovo in 1999 at Pristina Airport. NATO General Wesley Clark had ordered the British to use force to remove Russian forces, however British General Mike Jackson refused with the immortal words “Sir, I'm not going to start World War Three for you”. Former BRIXMIS officer Stephen Harrison was a British Army liaison officer to the Russians and the translator at the complex and fraught negotiations at the airport. He provides a blow-by-blow account from the detailed notes he took at the time.

On this week's CinemAddicts, Eric Holmes interviewed "Afterwar" filmmaker Birgitte Stærmose. "Afterwar" will be available online from November 17th through December 1, 2024 as a virtual screening experience through DOC NYC. The North American premiere is November 16 at the Village East By Angelika (featuring filmmaker Q&A). Poster courtesy of Magic Hour Films For more info: 1. Screening Info: https://www.docnyc.net/film/afterwar/Offiicial 2. Official Website: https://www.magichourfilms.dk/afterwar Official Plot Synopsis: "Burning buildings in a dense fog, a dead horse on a dusty road, people fleeing through harsh mountain landscapes. Afterwar opens with images from war-torn Kosovo, 1999, as a dark chapter in the history of modern Europe draws to a close. After the war, children sell peanuts and cigarettes on the streets of Pristina in order to survive. They speak to us: ‘There's only one reason I'm talking to you. It is my hunger! I'm so hungry, I could eat your money!' In a cinematic testament co-created over 15 years, they transform into adults before our eyes. Yet the child still stares back at us from behind the adult gaze, as the struggle to survive becomes a struggle for a future at all. They confront us with their innermost secrets and desires, while stuck in limbo and haunted by their past. Through a close artistic collaboration with the lead cast – Xhevahire, Gëzim, Shpresim, and Besnik – the film moves between raw realism, staged performance, and an existential meditation on the long-term repercussions of war. Any war, anywhere." ***Support CinemAddicts by purchasing/renting movies using our Amazon affiliate links or our SiteStripe. ***CinemAddicts Movie Picks (worth Renting/Purchasing) include: Seven Cemeteries Dominique The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry Red Rooms Take Cover For Ad-Free CinemAddicts episodes, subscribe to our CinemAddicts YouTube Channel. More than 25 years after the Kosovo war, a music festival in the capital Pristina is hoping to change the image of the country around the world by inviting international artists and fans to learn more about the country's cultural scene. Sunny Hill Festival is organised by global pop star Dua Lipa and her dad Dugi, who's from Pristina. They are using their industry contacts to bring acts like Bebe Rexha, Stormzy and Burna Boy to party with tens of thousands of people, as well as inviting top industry experts. But more than 15 years after Kosovo declared independence, could politicians be doing more to help boost the country's music scene rather than relying on the Lipa family? Produced and presented by Daniel Rosney(Dua Lipa performs on stage with her father Dukagjin Lipa during her first concert held in her hometown Pristina in 2016)
In this episode of War & Peace, Olga speaks with Crisis Group's consulting senior Balkans analyst Marko Prelec about the enduring political and ethnic tensions in the Western Balkans. They discuss the looming risk of Bosnia and Herzegovina breaking up amid secessionist threats by authorities in Republika Srpska and grievances among Bosnia's ethnic groups with its political system and its international supervision. They talk about the challenges of reconciliation in Bosnia as the country commemorates the anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide this month. They then unpack the tensions between Kosovo and Serbia and Pristina's efforts to assert authority in the Serb-majority north of the country. They also ask about the prospects of EU enlargement to the region and the lessons identified from Balkan efforts to remember, build on, and move past contentious histories. For more about the topics discussed in this episode, check out our EU Watchlist commentary Helping Keep Bosnia and Herzegovina Together and our report Northern Kosovo: Asserting Sovereignty amid Divided Loyalties. It's a quarter of a century since Kosovo emerged from a brutal war, one which pitted local ethnic Albanians against Serbs. Twenty-five years on, the government in Pristina is pressing ahead with reforms that could reinforce its separation from Serbia. They include banning the use of Serb dinars and curbing the import of things like Serb medicines. Pristina says the moves are needed to curb illegality and tax-evasion. But they've brought widespread complaints from local Serbs who feel victimised. Is the government justified in claiming there's a rising risk of violence, or are the restrictions themselves making this more likely?

Belgrade and Pristina blame each other for the violence in the mainly Serb-populated north of Kosovo. Also: Hundreds of ethnic Armenians flee Nagorno Karabakh following Azerbaijan's seizure of the territory, and a NASA space capsule returns to Earth with samples from an asteroid that could shed new light on how planets were formed.
Pristina is accused of undermining efforts to normalize relations with Serbia, which has puts its army on high alert. Also: a Russian border region bordering Ukraine comes under heavy bombardment, and the discovery of thousands of weird and wonderful species in an untouched area of the Pacific Ocean.
