The now legendary “firewall letter” stunned Canadian political watchers. Officially called the Alberta Agenda, it called on the province to start taking back powers from the federal government, refusing to be taken further advantage of. And for 20 years, Alberta governments largely ignored it. But as former provincial finance minister Ted Morton discusses with Brian, Alberta's UCP government is finally changing that. He was one of the letter's signatories, along with Stephen Harper, who later became prime minister. As Morton discusses his new memoir, Strong and Free: My Journey in Alberta Politics, he explains how a new conservatism is changing his province — and Canada. The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail.Alright, you Herle Burly-ites. A pretty cool show we've got for you today. We're doing a bit of pod crossover, and here's the reason:Naheed Nenshi became leader of Alberta's NDP, just 2 weeks ago. Not just by a large margin. Or an extra-large margin. Landslide may not even be a strong enough a word. Mr. Nenshi's win was first ballot. 86% of the vote. More than 10 times that of the runner up. So we're going to talk about how that happened. And there's few better to do that with than his campaign co-director … a man who also happens to be a co-creator, and 1/3 of “The Strategists” Podcast, Zain Velji. Hence, it's a Canadian Political Pod crossover today, Herle Burly-ites!Zain is the man behind Nenshi's powerful political brand. He's a vice-president and partner with Northweather, a strategy and marketing firm, focusing on charities, non-profits, causes, and advocacy. He helped lead Nenshi's successful mayoral campaigns and he played a big part in the Alberta NDP campaigns in 2019 and 2023.Zain is a regular political commentator with the CBC, his work has also appeared in the Toronto Star, and Globe and Mail and in 2019 was a panelist on CTV's National federal election coverage. So, lots of bona fides there. Alberta and beyond. We're going to talk about it all today:Nenshi.Alberta Politics provincial and federal. And the federal scene more generally.Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast. Please take a moment to give us a rating and review on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts or your favourite podcast app.Watch episodes of The Herle Burly via Air Quotes Media on YouTube.
Alberta's next provincial election is more than three years away, but with a new NDP leader, it's not going to be a quiet political summer. Nenshi is asked to clarify his position on federal climate policies and their impact in Alberta — including if he'd consider returning to an Alberta carbon tax should Pierre Poilievre become prime minister and axes the federal carbon tax.

We're back for another roundup of Alberta Politics and the last week has given us a lot of big events to talk about! We start by getting into the bizarre state of counselling as a profession in Alberta before we take a look at the RCMP investigation into the 2017 UCP Leadership Race, Danielle Smith's bizarre take on Pharmacare and we end with a deep dive on the state of coal mining in Alberta, particularly the proposed Grassy Mountain Mine that the UCP is inexplicably pushing through! This is probably our most important episode of The Breakdown ever. We're back for our regular live round up of Alberta Politics, including the announcement of the fact Alberta intends to opt out of the new national Pharmacare program, the multiple environmental disasters that the province is inevitably facing, Smith's recent provincial address and her newest episode of "Your Province, Your Premier". But it's the call in from Alberta Physician Dr. David Keegan on the loss of his trans nephew to suicide that everyone needs to hear, because that death is directly attributable to Smith's recent barrage of anti-trans policies. And we now have merch that's available at www.abpoli.ca, including a fall lineup! Some new intelligence on Canada's vulnerability to foreign interference is worrying to say the least. It suggests that interference by foreigners is deeply embedded in Canadian politics on every level. But the unanswered question is are we any different than most western countries? And Alberta's trans-gender decisions have not surprisingly become an issue too. Bruce and Chantal have their say on this and electoral reform plus more.
At Issue this week: Alberta introduces new policies restricting access to gender-affirming care for minors and requiring parental consent for pronoun and name changes at school. The Liberals consider a carbon-tax rebrand. Plus, the Conservative party's record-setting year of fundraising.
Dr. Bratt is a professor of Political Science at Mount Royal University and he joins us for a conversation on the state of affairs in Alberta Politics! We start by taking a look at the potential political implications of Danielle Smith's recent appearance with Tucker Carlson before we pivot to the NDP leadership race and Danielle Smith's announcement that the UCP will be introducing legislation on "parents rights" with an announcement coming this week! Today an encore presentation of an episode that originally aired on May 29th. A week after the Johnston Report we leave the politics out of the discussion and talk only about what we learned, including what do we know about how we handle our secrets. And when a top-secret report goes up to the Primer Minister how many people may have first seen it -- you might be surprised. Special guest is security and intelligence expert Stephanie Carvin.
Another episode so big we had to split it into two parts! In this special Part 2, we sit down with politico and strategist Sarah Biggs to try and make sense of some of the choices that were made in Alberta Politics in the last week before we open it up to our open mic! Another episode so big we had to split it into two parts! In this first part, we take a look at a few of the weeks bigger Alberta Politics events before we do a complete deep dive/fact check on Tucker Carlsons recent speeches in Calgary and Edmonton! (And there's a LOT to fact check!) In the process we end up fact checking a lot of Smith's recent claims as well, and theres more than a few inaccuracies in there was well! Look for Part two where we bring in Politico and Strategist Sarah Biggs to help us make sense of it all and we have our regular open mic! And we now have merch that's available at www.abpoli.ca, including a fall lineup! John Kennedy used to say, aside from indigenous people, we are all either immigrants or descended from immigrants. That was true in the US and it's true in Canada. So how do we resolve what is becoming a major issue in Canada -- immigration? Plus, the Liberals have a cabinet retreat next week, so what? Will it make a difference? And, what now for Rachel Notley? Bruce and Chantal on all these and more.
The carbon tax has been a signature part of the Liberal's climate change policy but last night may have been the beginning of the end of that signature. Bruce and Chantal have their thoughts on the prime minister's latest move on the energy front and wonder what might be next. That plus another good discussion on the national implications already coming out as a result of Alberta's plan for its own pension plan.
This week, our guest is the Honourable Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta. There are some important federal policies under development with implications for the province of Alberta, including Ottawa's oil and gas emissions cap and the Clean Electricity Regulation (CER) that aims to move Canada to net-zero electricity by 2035. The Alberta government has also put a six-month moratorium, until the end of February 2024, on approvals of new renewable power projects. Here are some of the questions Peter and Jackie asked Premier Smith:From an energy perspective, how could the Alberta Sovereignty Act be used to respond to Ottawa's policies? What do you say to people who think the oil and gas industry is not reducing emissions fast enough, and therefore more policy is required?A cap on oil and gas emissions, asking for a 42% reduction below 2019 levels by 2030, could cause production curtailments with negative implications for provincial revenues and oil and gas companies; how will this get reconciled? What led Alberta to put a temporary moratorium on new permits for wind and solar projects? Why do you think the federal government's proposed Clean Electricity Regulation isbad for Alberta? Why did you launch a national campaign to bring awareness to the issue with the clean electricity policy? Carbon capture and storage (CCS)project spending in Alberta is moving slower than most people anticipated; why is that, and can the province help? Today an encore presentation of an episode that originally aired on May30th. A young Canadian medic fighting with the Ukrainians takes us inside the story with his first-hand account of what it's like at the frontlines of the war. His name is Brandon Mitchell and he's from Miramichi, New Brunswick. His story is one that tells us what this war is really like. Brian Stewart also drops by for a condensed Stewart Report on the latest developments in the war.

It looked like the NDP leader was in a political jam criticizing the government while at the same time propping it up. But someone, maybe Jagmeet Singh himself, came up with a great line to get himself to safe ground. Bruce does his SMT analysis on that plus the Alberta election and artificial intelligence too. Lots to listen to this week.

Thursday night was a big night in Alberta politics. It was debate night in the province's election campaign. But it was also the same day that Alberta's Ethics Commissioner came down with a report on the behaviour of Premier Danielle Smith. There was a lesson in her report that could and maybe should affect all politicians in Canada. Bruce and Chantal have their thoughts on that. Also some good talk on Pierre Poilievre's decision not to meet with special rapporteur David Johnston.
