Long serving Labour MP and former Minister David Parker gave his valedictory speech in Parliament last night, where he gave his colleagues across the House a list of things to do, among his thank yous and goodbyes. Chief among them was closing the gap between the very wealthy and the middle class. It could be done, he said, with a tax on capital income, a wealth tax, some form of interest deductibility ban with rules for deductions to avoid double taxation. He said this would pay for a tax-free threshold for income earners up to $10,000 with the next 10,000 subject to lower tax rates. Another was that he hoped freshwater standards would endure in some form, and called on future Ministers for the Environment not to become Ministers for Pollution. Looking at you, Shane Jones. Parker also suggested a way of future proofing New Zealand against future disasters by getting the Reserve Bank to use a quantitative easing scheme to purchase a long dated bond in the event the Alpine fault ruptures, which is not a bad idea because that would spread the cost of the disaster over generations, rather than have one generation deal with it. He wanted to see the government take on the tech giants with a proposal to make their social platforms liable for harmful content shared on their platforms. And he called out MPP as a political system that is becoming worse over time, that is fuelling culture war politics. “Under First Past the Post, New Zealand became amongst the best country in the world, but MMP was meant to be better. Perhaps Doctor Hooten is right and MMP gets worse over time. It's the people's system, not ours. As things polarise and the hard issues don't get fixed, we should allow the people to again make their choice. I'd vote STV. All 120 of us would have to serve in a seat - that drives behavioural change. I'd add in a small upper house, 30 people appointed as in Canada, or voted in STV and limited to two terms each.” That was David Parker last night in Parliament talking about the New Zealand he would have liked to have seen when he left politics. The thing is, the public have had their say and they have chosen and then reaffirmed MMP. My conscience is clear. Like David Parker, I preferred STV – that's what I voted for back in the 90s and I still think it's a better system today. I think he's right when he says that MPs need to have electorates to which they are accountable. And I think STV would be a fairer, less divisive system. First Pass the Post was undemocratic. There were times when New Zealand elected a government that only had around 38 - 40% of the vote, and 100% of the decision making, and that's not particularly fair. Some form of proportional representation is more representative, it's more democratic. If we're going to live in a democracy, we might as well behave as though we're living in a democracy and vote and get results as if we're living in a democracy. So from his to-do list, which would you like to see MPs pick up on? And specifically, when it comes to the voting system, I don't think we've got it right yet. There will be some of you who vote, who have grown up with the MMP and that's all you have known. As someone who knows First Past the Post and MMP, I think MMP is better than FPP and producing a more democratic and fairer result. Is it perfect? Nowhere near it. I think we need to keep refining it just because we've voted for it once, reaffirmed it once, doesn't mean we have to be stuck with it forever. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I've always been a fan of MMP. And I still am, but there's one thing about it that I do struggle with – the list MPs. I know it took some of us a while to totally understand why we have list MPs. I understand – but I don't necessarily like it. Which is why I thought retiring Labour MP David Parker raised some good points about MMP in his valedictory speech in Parliament. He reckons we should replace it with something else. His preference is the single transferable vote system, and he thinks we should have another referendum to see if people want to stick with the MMP voting system. I don't think we need a referendum because I think most people are happy with it. I am, anyway. Where I am with David Parker is list MPs. He didn't say straight out that he thinks they're a waste of time. That's probably because he's a list MP himself – or he was, anyway. But he thinks that, even if you're a list MP, you should be connected to an electorate. I know you see some list MPs driving around the place with signage on their vehicle saying “so-and-so, so-and-so, your such-and-such MP in wherever you might be”. Example: Tracey McLellan bills herself as a Labour list MP based in Banks Peninsula. But that's just optics. It's just done to make us think that a list MP is just as approachable and interested in their local community as someone specifically elected to represent an area. And I think list MPs have got a big sell job on their hands to convince us of the value they bring. I know they say they work frantically. But how does that stack up when we've got the likes of Prime Minister Christopher Luxon dealing with everything that comes with being PM – plus he's also the MP for Botany. So David Parker is right to be saying that list MPs need to do more than just meat in the room at Parliament when it comes to voting in a pack. I disagree with him though when he says MMP is to blame for polarising people. He says MMP has based politics in New Zealand on identity, but I thought that's what MMP is all about. Because identity politics is when you get a political view based on things like ethnicity, race, nationality, religion, denomination, gender, sexual orientation, social background, political affiliation, caste, age, education, disability, intelligence and social class. My response is: what's so bad about that? It's not as if we didn't have special interest political parties before MMP. We had Christian Heritage and the Christian Democrats. And the Values Party was pretty much an environmental political outfit. Even Social Credit had a particular identity –it wasn't just another mainstream political party. Another thing I disagree with is David Parker's view that MMP is bad because it polarises people. He says under the first-past-the-post system, New Zealand was one of the best countries in the world and that, with MMP, the place was meant to get even better. But he says it hasn't. He says politicians are more divided than ever and New Zealand society is more divided than ever. But I don't think MMP is to blame. People are polarised all over the world – more so after Covid. And there are many different voting systems all over the world. Nevertheless, David Parker thinks MMP has run its course and he reckons it's time to put it to the people and have another referendum to see if we're still happy with MMP, or whether we'd like to change to something else. Even though I've got issues with list MPs, I'm good with the way things are. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Having been a music educator for 41 years, Dr. Parker agrees that properly-motivated pursuit of success is not wrong, and he justifies encouraging excellence in students.

He received his doctorate here in 2004, and this is his first year back after teaching political science at Montana State University for sixteen years, including five years as Department Head. We asked Prof. Parker about the Labour Party's landslide victory in the elections this past summer, and how the Conservative Party is responding. We also discussed political polarization in Britain compared to that in the United States as well as how Brexit and devolution has impacted British politics. We thoroughly enjoyed our conversation and hope you will too.

The removal of both VAT relief on school fees, and potentially also business rate relief, has added to the financial challenges facing many UK private and independent schools. In response, Headteachers and their teams may be looking to their buildings and wider estates to save or raise capital. Olivia Haslam, co-Chair of Savills Education group; David Collier, Director in Leisure, Tourism & Events; and David Parker, Head of Rating, run through the processes and pitfalls institutions should be aware of as they look to make the most of their estate while safeguarding their core school functions, and discuss what opportunities there may be to raise additional capital from buildings and land via events and other activities.

You can see how the rumblings around the future of Chris Hipkins as Labour Leader have started.  They have added to their problems this week with the social media post from David Parker wittering on about his tax dream. The old Capital Gains Tax, get all those rich bastards lined up and raid their pockets.  It's a sorry old state they find themselves in.  The power crisis is a nadir of sorts. The cold hard reality of their policies has come home to roost for us and haunt them.  You can argue the same around the economy, in general of course, and their Covid approach. Three recessions in two years. A record unmatched by anyone I can find is pretty damning for a government that spent six years basically wrecking the place.  But the power is indisputable. We have no gas because we haven't looked for any because they closed it down.  The lack of rain or wind isn't their fault, but the fragility of the system is. All the stuff they said would happen to close the gap hasn't. The Onslow idea went nowhere. And the simple, irrefutable truth is as a result of a lack of supply is the price is up, some people can't pay it, and people are out of work.  It's a series of very clear simple dots that can be laid directly at their doorstep.  It goes to credibility, they have none. And now we have tax.    If Labour go to the next election with a package of new taxes, like capital gains, they may as well not campaign.  They will have a two-fold problem. One, the recent memory of their performance in government is still fresh in voters' minds. Two, a new idea being we will tax you some more for good measure.  They will, of course, be facing a government that has cut taxes and may well, if they are lucky, have an economy with some real steam driving it.  If Hipkins makes it that far, his vision will seem so weird, so out of touch, and so ideologically mad he will not only lose, but quite possibly badly.  You can't hide your past; you can hope people forget, and time helps that.  But if more tax is their calling card for 2026, it's game over before it's even started. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

SHOULD I APPLY EARLY DECISION OR EARLY ACTION? When applying to highly selective schools, every advantage makes a difference. Why, then, would a student pass up one of the biggest multipliers in acceptance rate? Amy and Mike invited education consultant David Parker to explore the existential college admissions question: should I apply Early Decision or Early Action? What are five things you will learn in this episode? What are all of the ways to apply early and why do colleges offer so many options? What are the differences between early decision and early action? What are the benefits and drawbacks to applying early? How should a student know what is right for them? By when should students have their target test scores for ED/EA applications? MEET OUR GUEST David Parker received his BA degree at Furman University and finished his MA and PhD at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, all in English. With twenty years of teaching in the English Department at Gardner-Webb University and ending as a department chair, he learned volumes about the college admissions process by visiting and talking to prospective students and their parents.  David served for years on scholarship committees where he combed through applicants' files, read their essays, and eventually interviewed the highest-ranking applicants.  He attended “behind closed doors” meetings where decisions were made about six-figure scholarship packages. After all those years of sitting on scholarship committees, he knows what makes one student stand out from the crowd. Most importantly, year after year, David got to know first-year students. Some had chosen the perfect school for themselves and spent four marvelous years at Gardner-Webb. Some chose poorly, or hastily, or out of convenience, and were deeply unhappy at a school that didn't fit. These students usually left: some went to other schools, and some, frustrated, never finished college. In 2017, David left Gardner-Webb and in 2019 established Parker Educational Consulting. After many years in academia, it was the students, much more than the subject matter, that became his passion. He cares about their intellectual and emotional development and their preparation for the world beyond graduation. Parker Education Consulting's purpose is to introduce the right schools to students and then present those students in the best light to schools. The goal is to find that "good fit match" that David saw throughout his teaching career.  David has a wife, Emily, and one son in college at SCAD and another who is a rising high school senior. He is not a bad guitar player and occasionally opens for traveling acts that come through Shelby, and plays at farmers' markets and private events Find David at davidreedparker@gmail.com. Alchemists, magicians, and high priests from past ages are often looked at as having more in common with superstition, fantasy, and insanity than science. But modern science is conducted in similar ways. Pharmaceutical companies produce products derived from chemicals or plants that are no different than potions, philters, draughts, or cures for poison. Biotechnology companies likewise tamper with nature by mixing genes to create their own version of nature. The scientists, chemists, etc., involved in these productions are now called experts and given authority as part of a priestly class that is never to be questioned.'What Really Makes You Ill?' can be found here: https://whatreallymakesyouill.com

Today we welcome Dawn Lester, co-author of the book What Really Makes You Ill? with David Parker. Guess what we're going to talk about? The authors' investigation of why people become ill was conducted from a different perspective from that of the medical establishment; it was therefore free from the dogma and biases inherent within ‘medical science'. This unbiased and logical approach enabled them to follow the evidence with open minds and led them to discover the flaws within the information about illness and disease that is promulgated by the medical establishment.Dawn's links:What Really Makes You Ill?: https://www.amazon.com/What-Really-Makes-You-Ill/dp/1673104037Website: https://whatreallymakesyouill.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dawnlester183/Substack: https://dawnlester.substack.com/Christian's links:I specialise in helping women overcome their health challenges so they can thrive at any age.
