My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Martin Bodek, author of the book Zaidy's War. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Martin currently lives in NJ with his wife and three children. He is an avid marathoner, Daf Yomi participant, Wordler, vexillologist, and halvah aficionado. He is a technologist by day, and a writer by night.   A freelance writer on Jewish interest topics for three decades, his work has been published in The Huffington Post, The Denver Post, The Washington Times, The Jewish Press, Country Yossi Magazine, Modern Magazine, The Jewish Link of NJ, The Jewish Book Council, scoogiespin, israelinsider, bangitout, jewcentral, Jew in the City, Aish, and Shepherd. His work was translated for Germany's only weekly Jewish newspaper, The Jüdische Allgemeine. Zaidy's War was translated into Yiddish and serialized in Der Yid. He is the co-creator of TheKnish.com, a popular Jewish news satire site, the beat reporter for JRunners, the surname columnist for jewishworldreview, the cufflink columnist for The Jewish Link of NJ, and is part of the Word Prompt rotation in The Jewish Press.   In my book review, I stated Zaidy's War by Martin Bodek is a Holocaust family memoir you won't want to miss. As Martin said in his preface, the stories his grandfather told him about his time during the war always sounded more like a super-hero adventure story. However, as he grew older, he realized that these stories were far more and needed preserving. Without a doubt, his grandfather would be so proud of the book and grateful that Martin found a way to keep the memories of the Jewish plight alive.   Zaidy is an amazing man who loved religious learning, his family, and freedom. Yet, due to Hitler and his desire for ethnic cleansing, Zaidy could have easily lost everything he loved. And when he made it through the other side of the war, he could have easily lost his humanity. And yet, what we find is a man who pushed forward, helped his community rebuild, fell in love, worked hard for his family, moved not once but twice in order to provide the stability his family needed, and continued to follow his religious principles throughout his life. It is no wonder Martin grew up thinking his grandfather was so amazing - it is because it was true.   In today's world, where antisemitism is strong and there are many who claim the Holocaust didn't happen, books such as Zaidy's War are beyond valuable. These stories could ultimately stop something like the extermination of entire Jewish communities from happening again. Buy this book. Read this book. And then determine what you can do to begin to right the wrongs you see happening in your own communities.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Martin Bodek Website: https://martinbodekbooks.com/ FB: @ martinbodek X: @martinbodek IG: @martinbodek LinkedIn: @Martin Bodek   Purchase Zaidy's War on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/45LyVt1 Ebook: https://amzn.to/4nBssYb   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? Chris Campbell—better known online as Chris CARESNONE, “The Babka King”—is a Chicago‑born speaker, podcaster, and viral food creator who uses humor and high‑energy storytelling to turn everyday dishes into unexpected lessons on unity. His cross‑cultural food videos have attracted nearly half‑a‑million TikTok fans, hundreds of thousands on Instagram, plus growing Facebook and YouTube communities, while mainstream outlets from NBC New York Live to the Times of Israel label him a bridge‑builder for our polarized era. Raised in Chicago's northwest suburbs, Campbell studied Mass Communication at Harper College, laying the groundwork for the relatable voice he wields today. A 2020 diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia reframed his outlook; he now calls life “house money,” a perspective he credits for the fearless tone of his brand. A single babka review triggered a wave of Jewish‑food content, earning Campbell the affectionate “Babka King” tag. NBC New York Live dedicated a full segment titled “Breaking the Babka Code,” highlighting his knack for translating pastry into empathy. The Times of Israel later profiled how his sweet‑tooth adventures “bridge cultural gaps on Instagram, one blintz at a time.” Whether sampling Hasidic cholent in Brooklyn, mole tacos in Chicago, or German schnitzel in Detroit, Campbell frames every bite as proof that flavors beat borders. Aish.com praised his “funny and heartwarming” approach to classic Jewish fare, while the Jewish Telegraphic Agency spotlighted how his trademark greeting—“Y'all been gatekeeping all the good food?!”—turns potential tension into shared laughter. Campbell's north‑star goal is clear: feed connection, not conflict. From a forthcoming book on audience‑building to plans for a traveling Babka Festival, he proves that a camera, a good bite, and a fierce belief in human potential can taste‑test us toward a kinder world—one cultural mash‑up at a time.

Exodus by way of Egypt: Hear how Canadians fled Israel after war broke out with Iran

For over a week now, we have been reporting stories about Canadians stranded in Israel since that country launched its pre-emptive attack on Iran on June 13. But slowly, and under the radar for security reasons, The CJN has been speaking to some of the first tourists who found ways to evacuate Israel–mostly without any help from the Canadian government. We couldn't report their stories until it was safe to do so. But now that many of the Canadians we interviewed last week are either home or well on their way, we can bring you some of their amazing stories–whether it was boarding that all-expenses paid, chartered luxury Israeli cruise ship for a party-filled voyage to Cyprus or taking an anxiety-filled secret bus trip through Israel to Jordan and then a flight to Cairo, and finally on to Europe, all while hiding their Jewishness and the fact they are gay. Leonard Temes is an architect and interior designer from Toronto who came to Israel for on a Pride mission with a Jewish Federations of North America group, but left clandestinely five days ago. He had the added fright of finding himself on the same plane as those extremist pro-Palestinian protesters who tried to participate on the global March on Gaza, but were kicked out of Egypt by local authorities. Meanwhile Philip Lerner, a Thornhill data scientist, came to Israel to volunteer with an Orthodox youth group connected to the AISH movement. Lerner was offered a berth on that Israeli cruise ship chartered by Birthright, via Ashdod to Cyprus. He's dubbed the overnight voyage “The Jew Cruise”. But Lerner says despite what social media videos you might have seen of the 1,500 Jewish young people dancing and partying on the pool deck, the overall journey was anything but smooth sailing. On today's episode of The CJN's North Star podcast, host Ellin Bessner speaks with both Leonard Temes and Philip Lerner, about how they got out. REVENGE - SEASON FINALE (a shiur by Chaz Volk)

For over two years, I, Chaz Volk, successfully released one episode of Jewish content per week. Each episode averaged 30 minutes, offering Torah insights and glimpses into Jewish diasporic cultures. This endeavor was nothing less than a passion project—one that I balanced alongside my day-to-day work life. My primary goal was to learn. Coming from a conservative/secular Jewish background, my knowledge was limited. It still is, humbly speaking. However, I am proud to say that I have grown tremendously since the show's inception. I write this with a deep sense of care and pride, knowing how far I've come from my initial understanding. The show opened doors, connecting me with rabbis, coaches, actors, professionals, musicians, and content creators. I had the unique opportunity to learn from so many incredible voices, exploring the theology of Judaism through its many lenses. The show itself achieved notable success, ranking as the 17th-largest Jewish podcast in the world from 2023 to the present. Occasionally, I even received public recognition for my work. Despite not considering myself a thought leader (seriously, I've only ever been a student), I was able to foster a community. The learning experience was so personally fulfilling that it ultimately inspired me to study Torah full-time at Aish HaTorah, embracing the rich Jewish tradition of yeshiva. While in Israel, I had the honor of recording in-person interviews at a studio in the Old City. Unfortunately, that studio shut down, forcing my show into an unexpected hiatus. But as Hashem would have it (because there's no such thing as luck—only Hashem), I was invited to speak for Aish's "Gesher" program. I was granted one-time access to a rabbi's camera and microphone equipment, seizing the opportunity to publicly share my story. In my speech, I revealed the two other reasons I created this show: To make it clear, once and for all, that there is NO SUCH THING AS A BAD JEW Revenge Why revenge? Tune in to find out. 00:00 Parshas Mishpatim 06:52 Historical Context of Slavery Laws 10:12 Hebrews' Mindset  13:52 A Shameful Quarrel 16:23 Final Moments 18:34 Variations of Judaism 24:33 The Dream 25:53 Disconnection 30:32 THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BAD JEW 34:08 Divine Justice 34:40 A Revenge Story About Chaz Volk: Chaz Volk grew up in Thousand Oaks, California, where he began his Torah studies until becoming Bar Mitzvah at Temple Etz Chaim. From a young age, he was keenly aware of his uniqueness and often found himself the token Jew in non-Jewish settings. In middle school, Chaz experienced his first encounter with antisemitism—an experience that, rather than distancing him from his heritage, only strengthened his connection to his Jewish identity. Later, he attended San Francisco State University, where he became deeply involved with SF Hillel as both a volunteer and an intern. From early on, he recognized the university's social climate and its stance on Jews and Zionism. Chaz eventually became the lead plaintiff in the class-action lawsuit Volk v. CSU Board of Trustees—a case that he and his legal representation won. Since then, he has proudly embraced his Jewish identity and actively participated in Jewish communities across Southern California. Most recently, Chaz experienced an emotional awakening during an organized trip to Israel. There, he adopted new Jewish practices that remain an integral part of his life today. Currently, he is a volunteer and frequent participant in Aish HaTorah's programming. Through this show, he aims to promote Aish's programs, events, and resources while sharing valuable Jewish teachings.
