Abby and Patrick are joined by philosopher Simon Critchley to discuss his new book, On Mysticism: The Experience of Ecstasy. They discuss how, for Critchley, mysticism represents "a way of thinking about existential ecstasy that is outside and more than the conscious self.” Exploring the book's survey of key figures and texts in the Western Christian tradition, the three unpack how accounts of mystical experiences can challenge our assumptions about the past, defy traditional philosophical ideas of subjectivity, and suggest new ways of thinking about the conditions of everyday life in the present, all with rich psychoanalytic implications. Their conversation ranges from the cognitive and affective dimensions of mystical experience to mystical accounts of embodiment, gender, and erotic jouissance to the biographies and autobiographies of mystics, and more. In this episode, I got to talk with Simon Critchley about his new book Mysticism. We delve into Critchley's journey towards exploring mysticism, his reflections on modernity, and his discussions on key figures like William James, Julian of Norwich, and Meister Eckhart. We also discuss the importance of reading and understanding mystical texts, the role of prayer, and how modernity has impacted our perception of faith and spirituality. His engagement with mysticism beyond the confessional boundaries in which it so often emerges makes the topic and the book a timely reflection for our contemporary spiritual crisis. Simon Critchley has written over twenty books, including studies of Greek tragedy, David Bowie, football, suicide, Shakespeare, how philosophers die, and a novella. He is the Hans Jonas Professor of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research in New York and a Director of the Onassis Foundation. As co-editor of The Stone at the New York Times, Critchley showed that philosophy plays a vital role in the public realm. Today we talk about whether it's possible to achieve not just freedom of the will, but freedom from the will. The technological enframing of reality from the perspective of Heidegger. Misconceptions about Mysticism. The ways that modern life prevents us from having more of a connection with Being. Some ways to start practicing mystical types of experiences using the resources that we have available to us. We do all of this via some points made by Simon Critchley in his new book On Mysticism: The Experience of Ecstasy. Kate Wolf and Medaya Ocher speak with writer and scholar Simon Critchley about his new book, Mysticism. Defining mysticism not as a religion but as a “tendency, a distillation of existing devotional practice,” the book begins by considering some of the great mystics of the Christian tradition. These include Critchley's favorite mystic, Julian of Norwich, known as the first woman to ever write a book in English, Margery Kempe, Christina the Astonishing, and Meister Echkhart, a German theologian who influenced philosophers like Hegel and Heidegger and was tried as a heretic shortly after his death by Pope John in 1329. But more than a history or survey of mysticism, Critchley's book is invested in isolating the loss of self and experience of ecstasy its practitioners describe, and looking for resonance within contemporary culture. He examines the work of writers such as Anne Carson and Annie Dillard, and the musician Nick Cave, suggesting that mysticism lives on as a secular aesthetic experience in the “world of enchantment opened in art, poetry and—especially—music.” Also, Deborah Levy, the author of The Position of Spoons: And Other Intimacies, returns to recommend two books scheduled to be published next year, On Breathing: Care in a Time of Carastrophe by Jamieson Webster, and Baldwin: A Love Story by Nicholas Boggs.

It's time for The Truth!Sam Tighe and Dougie Critchley sit down to discuss a topic that's been circulating across social media, broadcast radio and YouTube for quite some time - the idea that Pep Guardiola has somehow ruined the game that we love, in the process of changing it amidst his dominance of Europe. We explore the ideas that are often used to berate Pep - that he is responsible for the death of long-distance strikes and flair players; that physicality and ball retention have become so commonplace; the sheer number of copycat managers who have attempted to transplant Guardiola's style onto teams with less technical ability; and the concept that he has made football boring by the pure dominance of his Manchester City team. Is there credence to these suggestions? Or are people just angry about the fact that Pep's City just feel inevitable in their quest to stack up trophies? The Truth is somewhere in the middle... Hosts: Sam Tighe & Dougie CritchleyProduction & Editing: Jack Collins Studio Recording: Footwork Media And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?

Is the whole thing a disaster, or could it be that Chelsea are just a few steps ahead of the rest? The Truth is somewhere in the middle... Hosts: Sam Tighe & Dougie CritchleyProduction & Editing: Jack Collins Studio Recording: Footwork Media And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?

He lives in Brighton but spent most of his formative years in Europe and Africa. GUEST 2 OVERVIEW: In 2012, Ant had what could be described as a 'Spiritual Awakening,' guided by synchronicities involving the numbers 1111. This journey led him to learn about how the world operates, with a focus on enslaving the human race through fear, corruption, and greed. During this period, Ant's partner fell seriously ill, and as a family, they experienced firsthand how 'big pharma' prioritizes profit over curing, nearly resulting in her losing her life due to prescribed medications. On March 20, 2020 (the day when pubs were closed), Ant became a landlord of The Crown (corona) in a picturesque village in Lancashire, driven by his awakening experiences and the belief that it was all nonsense. Despite numerous challenges, including hosting three outdoor festivals and weekly 'Truther Tuesday' freedom events, the pub became a haven for those affected by the tyranny imposed on the population, helping them avoid losing their homes, businesses, and livelihoods by the end of 2021. Unfortunately, the loss of the business took a toll on Ant, leading to a nervous breakdown in 2022 and unemployment. Working on various projects with the hope of inspiring others and seeking more answers on the quest for truth, Ant and his partner hosted another 'Freedom Festival' in Lancashire in the summer of 2023.

Simon Critchley's curiosity is on steroids, and that curiosity, love of learning, and genuine interest in other people fuel his moxie. In this episode, we explore with Simon the role of philosophy in creating moxie. He shares his wisdom on how we have more in common than we think and how forming alliances and relationships based on those commonalities allows us to learn from others rather than judge them. He explains that to philosophize is to take time and resist busyness. It's about looking up and taking in the spaciousness around us with openness and without judgment. Cultivating a curious mindset is worthwhile work; putting down our tech and forming connections is imperative to our humanity.Simon is the Hans Jonas Professor at The New School in New York City, where he teaches philosophy. He writes prolifically on a wide range of topics. His books include Very Little…Almost Nothing (1997), Infinitely Demanding (2007), The Book of Dead Philosophers (2009), and The Faith of the Faithless (2012). Simon has also written a novella, Memory Theatre (2015), a book-length essay, Notes on Suicide (2020), and studies of David Bowie, Football, and Apply-Degger (Onassis, 2020). More recent books are Tragedy, The Greeks and Us (Pantheon, 2019), and Bald (Yale, 2021). Simon was the series moderator of ‘The Stone,' a philosophy column in The New York Times, and co-editor of three volumes connected to the series, most recently Question Everything (2022). He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Onassis Foundation and also 50 percent of an obscure musical combo called Critchley & Simmons. In 1811 a series of brutal murders on the Ratcliffe Highway in the east end of London shook the locals to the very core with their unrivalled brutality and seemingly random, everyday targets. The murders exposed a fear in the city that had been bubbling away beneath the surface for several years and made some of the first inroads into the long debate over the reform of the way the police operated throughout the country. Considered as the crime of the century and unparallelled in the fear and panic it provoked amongst the population of the city, it was only overshadowed by a group of five murders in Whitechapel during the summer and autumn of 1888, attributed to the elusive and infamous Jack the Ripper.
