It is an attempt to help them see their creative process as a potential opportunity to approach God. "Art, Music, Poetry: Is It a Pathway to Christian Spirituality?"This presentation explores the concept of mysticism, challenging the misconception that it is irrational or opposed to reason. Instead, I attempt to present spirituality as a gateway to deeper Christian spirituality, particularly as an antidote to the narrow materialistic thinking prevalent in modern society.The episode draws mainly on philosopher Simon Critchley's latest book, On Mysticism, using his insights as a springboard to explore Christian spirituality and mysticism. Critchley, argues that mysticism is about experiencing life in its most intense form. He discusses how figures like Julian of Norwich, Eckhart, and even contemporary artists like Nick Cave have engaged with mysticism. Critchley suggests that deep engagement with art, music, and poetry can serve as secular gateways to religious experience. However, the podcast contrasts this secular approach with the biblical foundation of Christian mysticism, which is rooted in divine revelation.Christian mysticism is not an abandonment of reason but an extension of it—an experiential knowledge of God that transcends intellectual comprehension. Throughout history, Christian mystics, such as St. Teresa of Ávila, St. John of the Cross, and Thomas Aquinas, sought union with God through disciplined spiritual practice. In 2021, Netflix released His Dark Material, a Christmas stand-up special by Irish–British comedian Jimmy Carr. The show sparked international outrage. Toward the end of the set, Carr delivered what he called a ‘career ender' – a joke about the Holocaust, in which he described the Nazis' murder of thousands of ‘Gypsies' as a ‘positive'. The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, the Auschwitz Memorial, and the UK government condemned the joke as ‘appalling', ‘abhorrent', and ‘racist'; Carr, critics said, was trading on the ‘last acceptable form of racism'. Comedy touches every part of our lives. We tell jokes at the pub, around the dinner table, and by the office coffee machine. We all know someone who makes us laugh – and someone who seems to take things too far. But is there a line when it comes to humour? And if there is, who gets to draw it? Should we suspend our moral judgements when the lights go down and the curtain goes up? Or do jokes, like most speech acts, carry moral weight? To answer these questions, we need to understand the nature of comedy itself – what exactly it is we're responding to when we laugh. Humour might be a release of nervous tension, a playful disruption of expectations, or – more troublingly, if it applies to Carr's joke – a means of asserting social superiority. No doubt, comedy has the power to shape our culture and perceptions. But, as we'll find out, it also tells us something about who we are, who we ought to be, and the things we value most. In 1811 a series of brutal murders on the Ratcliffe Highway in the east end of London shook the locals to the very core with their unrivalled brutality and seemingly random, everyday targets. The murders exposed a fear in the city that had been bubbling away beneath the surface for several years and made some of the first inroads into the long debate over the reform of the way the police operated throughout the country. Considered as the crime of the century and unparallelled in the fear and panic it provoked amongst the population of the city, it was only overshadowed by a group of five murders in Whitechapel during the summer and autumn of 1888, attributed to the elusive and infamous Jack the Ripper.
