Since the Industrial Revolution, human activities have raised the levels of atmospheric CO2 by 50% – meaning we now have over 150% more CO2 in the atmosphere than in 1750. These high levels are trapping heat and raising the temperature of the planet. There is a natural way to reverse this effect: giving our soil the power to re-absorb the CO2 released into the air. That's Alexsandra Guerra's mission with the company she co-founded, Nori. As an entrepreneur and environmental engineer, she decided to make carbon removal her work and helped develop a technology that takes farming to a new and more sustainable level. Growing up in Miami, she realized early on that climate change would have a major impact on her life and the lives of those around her. That created a sense of urgency that made her dedicate the past 18 years to researching solutions to reverse carbon emissions. In this episode, Alexsandra talks about her motivation behind the business, what made her choose carbon soil as the focus of her business venture, and how she applied her engineering background and knowledge of blockchain to reverse carbon emissions and reinstate the soil's ability to absorb CO2. With over 18 carbon removal projects under its belt and more than 125 thousand tonnes of carbon removed from the atmosphere, it's safe to say Nori has found a way to reverse the damage that's been done so far. Many of the artists and creators who mint nonfungible tokens (NFTs) are concerned about the environmental impact of the blockchain. But what if they could pair carbon removal with any given NFT to make it carbon-negative? Alexander Salnikov is Cofounder and Chief Strategy Officer at Rarible: a multichain, community-centric NFT marketplace. On this episode of Reversing Climate Change, Alexander joins Ross and cohost Alexsandra Guerra, Nori's Director of Corporate Development, to discuss the partnership between Nori and Rarible, describing how it affords Rarible users the opportunity to address their carbon footprint. Alexander explains how NFTs function as an effective way to store assets on the blockchain, exploring the many different use cases for NFTs, and how having access to a community is attracting new users to the space. Are we out of balance? Some thinkers pose that the scales have tipped toward industry, ego, and individuality, and we’re disconnected from the cycles of nature. We’re all Yang and no Yin. And this imbalance is causing climate change. So, what can we do to restore our sense of interconnectedness among all living things? How can tapping into our spirituality help us heal ourselves and the earth? Dr. Erin Yu-Juin McMorrow is the author of Grounded: A Fierce, Feminine Guide to Connecting with the Soil and Healing from the Ground Up. She is also a founding member of Kiss the Ground, a nonprofit dedicated to awakening people to the possibilities of regeneration. On this bonus episode of Reversing Climate Change, Dr. McMorrow joins guest host and Nori cofounder Alexsandra Guerra to share her mother metaphor for the soil, describing how she sees the Yin as the feminine energy of regeneration and why western society struggles with birth and death—the primary portals of transformation. Dr. McMorrow explores how our desire to DO disregards the spiritual aspect of climate change, discussing the individual and collective healing we must do to activate our soul voice and reconnect with each other and the earth. Listen in to understand the relationship between the empowerment of women and soil health and learn Dr. McMorrow’s simple practices for connecting with spirit and bringing our natural systems back into balance. Zengineering: A Philosophy of Science, Technology, Art & Engineering
What’s the happs, Zengineers? We’re back with our old friends at Nori, this week talking to Alexsandra Guerra Co-Founder & Director of Corporate Development, and 30 Under 30 GreenBiz 2019 Award Winner. For those in the know, this continues our collection of the Nori founding team, as we’ve had both Christophe and Paul on as well (see their episodes in the show notes below). We didn’t want to just rehash Nori in this convo, but some updates are always nice. We talk to Alexsandara about her background and how she found herself building Nori, and then we embark on an adventure to discuss how we all think about and deal with climate change in our own lives with the goal of staying AWAY from the technical. If you listen often, you know this was a challenge for Adam and Brian, and, interestingly, for Alexsandra as well. What we all know is that climate change is a complex technical issue, but what we realized during this conversation is that we need to spend an equal amount of time (if not much more) thinking about and talking about how it manifests in our every day lives, through our thoughts, our worries, and our actions. We then need to tell more stories! Lucky for us all, Alexsandra is starting a podcast to do just this, and she promises to kick that off right here on Zengineering (BREAKING NEWS!!). We’re kinda kidding. She’s only thinking about it, but we support the move. Let her know that you do too, by reaching out! As always, we really enjoyed this convo and hope you do too. The team at Nori has spent the last several months traveling the world, attending conferences around regenerative farming, agricultural technology, and the soil health movement. And the overarching theme among stakeholders has been the need for a price on carbon. How is Nori working to deliver just that? What methodologies is the platform using to measure and verify carbon removal in soil? And how does the system work to pay farmers for regenerative practices? Alexsandra Guerra is the Director of Strategic Planning for Nori. A clean energy crusader with a background in the energy and tech space, she is well-versed in the realm of data-drive projects focused on increasing distributed energy resources and grid modernization. Alexsandra believes that they key to impactful innovation is a combination of social awareness and technology, and she prioritizes efficient and sustainable practices in all aspects of her life. Today, Alexsandra once again joins Ross, Christophe and Paul on the podcast. This time, she is here to talk methodologies, explaining her current work with the product team around compensating farmers for carbon removal. She walks us through the process of enrolling in the Nori marketplace, getting your data verified, and earning Nori tokens. Alexsandra offers insight around the benefits of regenerative farming practices and the demand for a price on carbon. One of the tenets at Nori is Find, Don’t Whine. Rather than complaining about the complexity of reversing climate change, the startup believes in actively seeking out solutions. At the end of April, we took steps to engage a diverse group of stakeholders through the Reversapalooza Summit, inviting academics, influencers, policy-makers, potential carbon removal certificate suppliers and buyers to come together and initiate a conversation around incentivizing carbon removal by way of the blockchain. Alexsandra Guerra is one of the seven founders of Nori, and she serves as the startup’s Director of Strategic Planning. Alexsandra’s interest in reversing climate change began at 17 when she saw Dr. Klaus Lackner on the Science Channel and was inspired to pursue Environmental Engineering at Columbia. She is a clean energy and sustainability crusader working in the energy and tech space, serving as a renewable energy integration engineer at Southern California Edison for three years prior to joining Nori. Alexsandra believes that the environment-technology nexus should be used to better humanity and protect the environment, and she was the lead in organizing the Reversapalooza Summit. Today, Alexsandra joins Ross, Christophe, and Paul to sum up the Reversapalooza Summit, discussing Nori’s intent to procure feedback from a variety of stakeholders and iterate in the right direction moving forward. They briefly walk us through each session, sharing the major takeaways from Carbon Markets, Blockchain 101, and Returning Carbon to the Ground. Alexsandra reviews the Nori Trading Game, offering insight around how the simulated marketplace demonstrated Nori’s approach and uncovered effective market strategy.
