S26 Ep 6 |Desperate for God to Intervene: The Ongoing Tarry In this episode, Ruth engages in a profound conversation with Joy and David Bailey. Together, they delve into the themes from Dr. Selena Stone's book 'Tarry Awhile,' focusing on chapter six about healing. Joy and David share their extensive journey of dealing with Joy's chronic health issues, exploring how it has shaped both their faith and community life. They discuss the complexities of suffering, the importance of community support, and how leaning into God's presence has been vital in their ongoing struggle.  We are journeying through Lent with a podcast season entitled “Tarry with Me Awhile: Learnings from the Black Church.” We will use Dr. Selina Stone's book, Tarry Awhile: Wisdom from Black Spirituality for People of Faith, as a guide. Black spirituality has much to offer us in understanding the practice of tarrying as a Lenten practice. Together we will seek a deeper understanding of waiting on God in the liminal space—where the resurrection feels far off, and our deaths and suffering are present.    As a photographer and writer, Joy Guion Bailey (TC15) walks the tension between the hopeful, faithful now and the not yet. Her desire is that the spaces she curates in her life and work invite willing participants to their place at the communion table through pieces that encourage the viewer to stay, listen, and engage deeply with their own story and the narratives playing out around them. A practicing professional artist for 15 years, Joy resides in Richmond, Virginia, with her husband, David Bailey.    David Bailey (TC15) is a public theologian, culture maker, and catalyst focused on building reconciling communities. David is the founder and Chief Vision Officer of Arrabon, a spiritual formation ministry that equips the American Church to actively and creatively pursue racial healing in their communities. He is the co-author of the study series, A People, A Place, and A Just Society, and the executive producer of the documentary 11 am: Hope for America's Most Segregated Hour and the Urban Doxology Project. David is rooted at East End Covenant Fellowship, serving on the preaching team, and his greatest honor is to be married to his wonderful wife, Joy.   Music this season is provided by Julian Davis Reed. Julian Davis Reid (TC20) is an artist-theologian from Chicago who uses sound and word to offer hope to the searching, presence to the sorrowful, and rest to the weary. A pianist, composer, and producer, his projects featured on this podcast are the two solo piano records Rest Assured (2021) and Beside Still Waters (2024) and his single Moan (Matthew 2:18) featuring Tramaine Parker, released on Inauguration Day 2025 on the project When Souls Cry Out. Julian steadily releases music under his own name and with his group, The JuJu Exchange. You can learn more about his work at juliandavisreid.com. The idea that technology may be able to directly capture and control our thoughts is both fascinating and scary. But this type of technology has been around and is continues to be developed for a variety of applications. In this episode, we speak to Dr. Susan Boehnke about brain computer interfaces and neuromarketing. We dive into the ethical implications of brain-computer interface (BCI) applications—are these technologies enhancing human potential or invading our privacy? We also unpack how the media's portrayal of BCIs often exaggerates their capabilities, contrasting it with their real-world use. Plus, we explore neuromarketing: the fascinating history of how companies use brain data to influence your choices and shape marketing strategies. Don't miss this eye-opening conversation! Susan Boehnke completed a PhD in Neuroscience (2002) at Dalhousie University as a Killam Scholar using psychophysical and neurophysiological approaches to examine spatial processing in the auditory system. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in primate visual and oculomotor neurophysiology with Prof. Doug Munoz at Queen's Univ. In collaboration with Profs. Munoz and De Felice (Brazil), she took a lead role in the creation and validation of one of the first non-human primate (NHP) models of Alzheimer's disease using behavioural, neurophysiological, neuroimaging, and molecular approaches. She led development of the first NHP biobank in Canada, and the establishment of normative values of fluid biomarkers of neurodegeneration in macaques. During COVID, her team used the NHP facility at Queen's to explore the effect of social enrichment and isolation on the brain. In response to recent explosion of interest in neurotechnology, such as brain computer interfaces, she has now turned her attention to creating a micro-credential program in neurotechnology (https://neurotechmicrocreds.com/) and exploring ethical issues related to neurotech. She is also the lead of the Training Committee for Connected Minds: Neural and Machine Systems for a Healthy, Just Society, a large Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) program between York and Queen's Universities. This episode is sponsored by the Connected Minds program. Connected Minds, funded by the Canadian First Research Excellence Fund, is a 7-year collaborative program between York University and Queen's University that focuses on interdisciplinary, ethical, and socially responsible research and technology development. It is undeniable that poverty and income inequality are two of Canada's most pressing issues. But it is less clear what policy solutions need to be enacted to address these problems. In response to these challenges, some policy practitioners have called for the implementation of an unconditional Basic Income that would be accessible to all Canadians. Bill S-233, An Act to develop a national framework for a guaranteed livable basic income, is a clear example of this response. Proponents of a Basic Income present the policy framework as a simple and direct response to poverty, on the grounds that sending people a cheque through the tax system seems efficient. However, a host of researchers have called into question the underlying assumptions about the causes of poverty that proponents of a basic income take for granted. For instance, is basic income the best tool to achieve a just society? Could other social policies be put in place to achieve the desired outcome more holistically and efficiently? The book Basic Income and a Just Society, published last year by the IRPP, takes such an approach. This conversation between IRPP CEO and President Jennifer Ditchburn and Senator Kim Pate – a sponsor of Bill S-233 – tackles these questions, which have been at the centre of the IRPP's and Senator Pate's work for years.

Charity shares what has mattered most to her young family as they looked for a place to worship and Leo reveals his experience as a children's pastor when the children ruined all his well intentioned plans with their beautiful human-ness. What does it look like to make space for worship that changes us?   This season we're focusing on worship, particularly worship that is transformative. Our season long guest is Rory Noland and we will be working with his book, Transforming Worship: Planning and Leading Sunday Services as If Spiritual Formation Mattered. Does your child struggle with controlling their big emotions? Do they seem angry or frustrated most of the time? We've got some answers! Join us to listen to this interview with Dr. Stuart Shanker, a Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Psychology at York University and author of several books, including Self-Reg: How to Help Your Child (and You) Break the Stress Cycle and Reframed: Self-Reg for a Just Society. He is also an adoptive dad.In this episode, we cover:3 basic principles of self-regulation:There is no such thing as a bad or lazy kid. No matter how difficult, out of control, distracted, or exhausted a child might seem, there's a way forward: self-regulation.All people can learn to self-regulate in ways that promote rather than constrict growth. There is no such thing as a "fixed outcome": trajectories can always be changed, at any point in the lifespan, if only we have the right knowledge and tools. How can parents help their children become calmer when we live in a stressful, frantic, and over-stimulating world? How can parents calm themselves down in the hectic world?Five-step method for managing stress1. Reframe behavior by learning the difference between misbehavior and stress behavior and the signs of each. (Why and why now?)2. Recognize stressors. Some typical stressors broken out by age. Some “hidden stressors” that their children are struggling with - physiological as well as social and emotional. 3. Reduce stress (deep breathing (pizza breath), exercise, touch, music, pets)4. Reflect on what it feels like to be calm and what it feels like to be overstressed. 5. Restoration- energy, balance, and relationship. These steps are not a program for managing a child's behavior. Rather, these are five steps to promote understanding a child's behavior. This podcast is produced by www.CreatingaFamily.org. This season we are focusing on justice as an aspect of spiritual formation and we believe Lent to be the perfect season to explore this connection. Using A Just Passion: A Six-Week Lenten Journey, and the lectionary, we will look at various aspects of justice, its importance to God and why the modern church has often regrettably failed to live out God's call to “do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with the Lord.”   Our dream team from episode one returns this week to discuss communal suffering and the Paschal Mystery. Ruth is joined again by David Bailey and Tina Harris to explore these topics. How do oppressed people experience the Paschal Mystery? What is redemptive suffering? How do we determine where we are in the cycle of suffering, death, burial and resurrection and how can we discern if God might be calling us towards the next movement in this cycle?   Lectionary scripture for this week: Ezekiel 37:1-14 Psalm 130 Romans 8:6-11 John 11:1-45 Mentioned in this episode: Martin & Malcolm & America by Dr. James Cone David Bailey is a public theologian, culture maker, and catalyst focused on building reconciling communities. Using A Just Passion: A Six-Week Lenten Journey, and the lectionary, we will look at various aspects of justice, its importance to God and why the church has often regrettably failed to live out God's call to “do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with the Lord.” For this Ash Wednesday episode Ruth sits down with David Bailey and Tina Harris to examine the connections between Lent and pursuing justice as a spiritual practice. They name areas of injustice and do some definitional work around exactly what God's call to justice is. The three also speak candidly on why the white church has often failed to focus on this call, in both word and deed. To end they look at Matthew 6 for inspiration on practices and postures we can all have this Lenten season as we look to pursue justice as a part of our spiritual formation.   David Bailey is a public theologian, culture maker, and catalyst focused on building reconciling communities. We are kicking off this season with a conversation with Dr. Stuart Shanker, who I first learned about through my friend Seth Perler as he's been part of the TEFOS Summit. I love Stuart's message and recently devoured his book Self-Reg: How to Help Your Child (and You) Break the Stress Cycle and Successfully Engage With Life, and wanted to dive deeper with Stuart about it. In this episode, we get into the ways in which the brain controls the levels of stress, the difference between self-regulation and self-control, and the difference between stress behavior and misbehaving. Stuart also walks us through his 5 steps to Self-Reg, and talks about the power of us as parents and caregivers and educators doing our own self-reg work so we can support the kids around us. About Dr. Stuart ShankerDr. Stuart Shanker (D.Phil) is a Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Psychology, the Founder & Visionary of The MEHRIT Centre, Ltd., and Self-Reg Global Inc. Anchored by Truth from Crystal Sea Books - a 30 minute show exploring the grand Biblical saga of creation, fall, and redempti

Episode 32 – Ken Connor Interview Welcome to Anchored by Truth brought to you by Crystal Sea Books. In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” The goal of Anchored by Truth is to encourage everyone to grow in the Christian faith by anchoring themselves to the secure truth found in the inspired, inerrant, and infallible word of God. Script Notes: (dramatic opening music)(music under voice over) O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger. When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, The Book of Psalms, chapter 8, verses 1 through 6. English Standard Version For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. The Book of Romans, chapter 1, verses 16 through 20. English Standard Version ******** VK: Hello! Welcome to another episode of Anchored by Truth brought to you by Crystal Sea Books. I’m Victoria K in the studio today with Ken Connor, noted attorney, author, activist, and former Chairman of the Family Research Council and the Center for a Just Society. Before we begin our interview though we’d like to take a few minutes to meditate on one of God’s most important attributes – His holiness. We’re going to do that by using a devotional extract from RD Fierro’s book on prayer entitled Purposeful Prayers. This happens to be day number 3 from the 30 day devotional study. ----------- Purposeful Prayers Devotion, Day Number 3, Holiness VK: Well, I think meditating on God’s holiness sets the stage pretty well for days discussion. By way of a slightly longer introduction of Ken, listeners should know that Ken has practiced law for over 40 years and has been at the forefront of some of the most important issues confronting our nation and culture pretty much throughout that time. Governor Bush asked Ken to represent Terry Schiavo in her family’s fight to keep Terry alive. Furthermore, as a former president of Florida Right to Life and two national organizations involved in major cultural issues Ken has unique insights on the challenges facing Christians in America and in our day and time. Also, though he’s too modest to tell anyone Ken was good friends with some of the most important Christian leaders in the last half century including Chuck Colson and RC Sproul among others. Ken, Thanks for being here today to share some of your unique insights. Ken: Thanks for inviting me. It’s always a pleasure to be back in Tallahassee. VK: Ken you’ve been at the forefront of many of the social and cultural issues confronting Christianity in America for the last … well, several years? Ken: Decades actually. VK: Well, long enough for you to not only have been prominent in many of issues at the national level but also long enough for you to form some thought about the major issues facing a culture that many think is abandoning its Judeo-Christian origin. Would you mind sharing a few of your thoughts about where we are today as a nation and as the church within the nation. Question List: 1. You were the first person I remember talking about the dangers posed judicial activism. Do you still see that as a problem in America? Has it improved in the 30 years since you first began talking about it? Or gotten worse? 2. You were also one of the first people to talk about the fact that the life issues included more issues than just abortion. Could you expand a little bit on what you meant and where you see those issues standing today? 3. One of the reasons RD founded Crystal Sea Books was to be a part of reclaiming the arts and entertainment parts of culture for the cause of Christ. He admired the influence that great Christian fiction writers like CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien had on the broader culture through their brilliant fiction and allegory. What do you think about that as a vision? Do you share RD’s concerns? 4. What do you think are some of the most important discussions going on within the broader culture as they affect the church? 5. You were asked to represent Terry Schiavo. Tell us about that. What were the issues involved? What did you learn from that? 6. At one point you decided to run for the Governor of Florida. Tell us something about that. Why did you decide to run? How did the race affect your life and family? Would you recommend seeking public office to other Christians? 7. You have said that it was reading the works of Francis Schaeffer that animated you to become involved in public policy and life. What was it that you read and how did it influence you? VK: Today for our closing prayer how about if we pray that everyone would come to a saving knowledge of the God of the Bible who is our one sure anchor to truth. ---- Prayer for the spiritually lost, radio version. VK: We hope you’ll be with us next time when we’ll continue our discussion with Ken. And we hope you’ll take some time to encourage some friends to tune in too, or listen to the podcast version of this show. Have Americans become jaded by unjust inequality? Two data points are informative.Few expect the celebrities caught in the college admissions scandal to do jail time for their criminal bribes. Those associated with Jeffrey Epstein appear to be unlikely to be held accountable any time soon.Perhaps even more seriously, however, Jonathan Rothwell believes that inequality and the political forces underlying it are actually undermining the public's faith in our government. He says that the wave of populist nationalism that swept Trump into office is driven by a deeper discontentment and insecurity resulting from widening income inequality. [Paradoxically, Rothwell argues that many of the same nativist attitudes are also cementing the very policies that are exacerbating unjust inequality.]Buy the bookOf course, it's vitally important in this debate to distinguish between inequality that is the result of people's subjective preferences for work vs. leisure, that which is based on supply and demand, and that which is based on pure political privilege. In his new book A Republic of Equals: A Manifesto for a Just Society, Rothwell ushers an impressive body of data to show just how much of the current inequality is caused not by free markets, but by the political powers that be. In doing so, he upsets both the right and the left's narratives around inequality. We do not live in a perfectly free market based on mutually-beneficial exchange. From education to housing, the current political system further rewards those who have already made it with additional spoils. As a “market egalitarian,” Rothwell claims that we do not need government to act to redistribute unjustly acquired wealth so much as we need government to set the rules of the game such that incomes more closely align with relatively evenly-distributed abilities in the population. There's a lot to unpack there.I spend the full hour this Sunday dissecting the poll numbers in Jonathan's book to determine whether his thesis is correct.A Republic of Equals envisions what would happen naturally to equality of outcome if we stopped giving those with political power special access to markets and public services. We discuss what count as “basic liberties,” and what government must do to ensure equal access to markets and the right to engage in mutually beneficial exchange. On this week's Electric Libertyland Brian diverts most of his attention to breaking down just how impossible, stupid and badly mis-thought Alexandria Ocasio Cortez' newest commie planning manifesto, "A Just Society," truly is. https://www.philosophytalk.org/shows/radical-markets. Many people think that growing inequality, the rise of populism and nativism, and the decay of democratic institutions all have the same cause—the overreach of markets. The solution, they believe, is to limit the market through regulation. But what if rather than shrinking the market, the answer lies in expanding the market? Is it possible that we haven't let markets go far enough? Do our current regulations lead to too many monopolies? And could turning more things into assets that are for sale to the highest bidder actually be the solution to our new gilded age? Debra and Ken buy and sell with Glen Weyl from Yale University, co-author of "Radical Markets: Uprooting Capitalism and Democracy for a Just Society."
