In this episode, Steve Fretzin and Scott Simmons discuss:Effective time management in the legal professionDeveloping habits and accountability for consistent business developmentBuilding a client-focused business model in lawOvercoming personal and systemic barriers to success in legal business development Key Takeaways:Allocating just 30 minutes weekly to business development can compound into significant progress over time, enabling lawyers to take control of their career trajectory.Transitioning from billable hours to value-based or subscription pricing models requires not just a pricing shift but a comprehensive business model overhaul.Lawyers must use tools like LinkedIn and existing client relationships to secure referrals effectively; over 90% of clients are willing to refer, yet only 8% of lawyers ask for them.Small, incremental habit changes, such as reading a chapter a week or posting on LinkedIn weekly, are more sustainable and impactful than attempting major shifts all at once. The Exit Plan: Mergers and Acquisitions for Creative Entrepreneurs
Welcome to The Exit Plan, a podcast for business owners interested in learning more about selling their business. Hasan Fadlallah is the founder & CEO of Brand Lounge, the region's leading and award–winning branding consultancy. He is also the Co-Founder & Director of Fullmoon Experiments, a socially driven incubator that develops and grows purposeful startups in the region. Embodying the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to improve the Arab world through empowering communities, spreading knowledge and nurturing entrepreneurship and innovation. In this episode, Hasan shares his background in marketing and advertising where he contributed to legacy brands like Dmbnb, Darcy, Masseus, Benton, and Bowls, later acquired by Become Three. He then founded the started Brand Lounge in 2006 as a strategy-led company focused on brand creation and development. Hasan shares the roller coaster events happened within the development span of the company due to crises. The turning point was on the 2008 financial crisis, which led to a pivot in their business model, where they decided to expand the business area to Saudi Arabia. During the development stage, he incorporate their services to purpose and culture, explaining that there is no point in building a brand that resonates in people's minds if purpose isn't figured out while culture serves as a byproduct of the strategy. Hasan mentions that they became a part of a network of almost 24 operations across the globe of around 5000 people. This works by having no equity within the local operations, and no financial arrangement as well, but it's a knowledge transfer and support mechanism as a specialty. He also shares that they focus on two key elements: distinctive philosophy and growth strategy, explaining that their philosophical views are what set them apart. Brand Lounge recently acquired a small talent management firm that specializes in culture from a brand perspective, called People Mina, then integrated as Brand Lounge becoming a culture practice. The acquisition is focused on talent rather than brand names. Hasan also shares that the IP value was determined by client interest and the valuation in the acquisition was determined by considering client willingness to pay for specific IPs. It is also crucial to consider the value of cultural fit and strategic alignment when making deals. Want to know more about partnership, networking, and how to grow your business? Listen, be inspired, and be literate on how to expand a business. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN: The journey to business expansion How to deal with crises Thriving not only surviving after success of your business Building internal components and methodology for brand development How does partnership and networking works globally The importance of Philosophy and Culture in integrating to business services Determining IP valuation Learnings and realizations about Hasan's journey CONNECT WITH HASAN: LinkedIn | www.linkedin.com/in/hasanfadlallah Website | www.brandloungeme.com Twitter | @hfadlallah Instagram | @hfadlallah THE EXIT PLAN The Exit Plan is for business owners that are interested in learning more about how to sell their business. In this podcast, businessline's Isha Rautela is joined by Ankur Bansal, Co-Founder and Director at BlackSoil Capital, who discusses the company's investment journey and the state of the start-up ecosystem, particularly in terms of venture debt. Bansal acknowledges that the start-up ecosystem faced challenges securing funding, but more recently, it has shown signs of improvement. Venture debt typically aligns with new rounds of capital, so the slowdown in equity investments also affects venture debt. However, he notes that the market has adapted by working with companies that have raised larger rounds or have sufficient liquidity from previous funding. Bansal emphasises the importance of underwriting and finding businesses that truly need venture debt to address specific use cases, such as reaching breakeven or improving unit economics. He mentions that companies in India are increasingly focusing on becoming cash flow positive, which has led to improvements in stock prices and is seen as a positive trend. When discussing Black Soil Capital's core investment strategy, Bansal highlights the importance of profitability and mentions that a significant portion of its portfolio comprises EBITDA-positive companies. Regarding sectors to avoid, Bansal mentions businesses with poor gross profit margins, as well as those in sectors with headwinds or unpredictability. For instance, he highlights their avoidance of sectors like fintech due to various factors, including market conditions and regulatory changes. He also mentions their current focus on the EV and climate tech spaces. Bansal also mentions the international market's growing interest in start-up investments, especially in regions like MENA and Southeast Asia. When asked about Black Soil Capital's future plans, Bansal hints at upcoming announcements related to new funds but doesn't provide specific details. He stresses the continuous fundraising and deployment of capital as a fundamental part of their business model and indicates a willingness to collaborate with banks and financial institutions to provide insight into the start-up ecosystem. Sage of India's hospitality Manav Thadani knows every secret of luxury hotels – and restaurants.
“Art is about exploration, process, potential.” A glassblower by training, Jackson Schwartz is an entrepreneur by instinct. A graduate of the Australian National University, renowned for its glass program, Schwartz returned to the Midwest to teach, and co-founded the Hennepin Made glass lighting studio in 2012 with the goal of creating jobs for his students, and himself. Today, Hennepin Made manufactures lighting for Room & Board and sells direct to consumer while also growing its business clients in commercial architecture and luxury residential design. You'd think that would be enough to keep the artist-turned-business owner occupied, but Schwartz set his sights on broader goals. He purchased a 30,000-square-foot industrial building on the edge of downtown Minneapolis to give the business plenty of room to scale, and also, to transform an underutilized pocket of the urban core, which he helped to name the Root District. “I want to see artistic production in the city,” Schwartz says. “We have the opportunity to weave it into the fabric of the neighborhood and what happens to downtown. We can show the business community what art does.” With passion comes a tendency to “go both feet in really fast.” Schwartz talks about opening a café and event space at Hennepin Made's headquarters, and realizing he was in over his head. “I've learned that there's only so much you can provide for altruistic reasons; you've got to really understand the implications for the existing business.” The café closed and the events business has been recalibrated so that Schwartz can find balance—professionally, and personally. That means getting back to the thing that inspired it all: a love of blowing glass. To further examine the relationship of art and business, we go Back to the Classroom with John McVea, a professor at the University of St. Thomas Schulze School of Entrepreneurship. “The separation we tend to make between art and business is not very healthy and will be even less important in the future,” McVea says. “Businesses that are closer to the arts are probably the future for employment in an economy like ours. Arts are the things that mean the most to us and are hardest to replicate by machines.”

GEEQ (Geeks With EQ) is a non-for-profit with an important mission: helping women get into IT and boosting the diversity of IT companies in Australia. To this day less than 20 per cent of Australia's IT workforce are women, and this has far-reading implications, from the bias that gets built into technology itself through to the depth of innovative thinking available in the space. The two founders of GEEQ, Azadeh Khojandi and Katrin Schmidt, join us on this special podcast to discuss the work that they're doing, and the traction that diversity is getting across Australian corporate spheres. “It's important for us that we're not only bringing women into the workforce, but helping them to grow and get the promotions, more responsibilities, and the fulfilment they deserve,” Khojandi says in the podcast. GEEQ is more than an advocacy group. It focuses heavily on skills and mentoring, providing women with books on leadership and managing events to assist with knowledge transfer. On the side of advocacy, the two are focused on helping the Australian business community recognise biases in the hiring process and how to mitigate against that, Katrin says on the podcast. “It's really difficult to have awareness of your own unconscious bias,” she says. “It's like stopping and thinking to yourself, ‘what did I just do?'. The first step is a change in awareness. You don't have to jump to conclusions, but you do need to watch and be aware.” Azadeh and Katrin are sponsors at the upcoming Data Engineering Summit and will be hosting a luncheon. It will be a rare opportunity to talk directly to some of the speakers from the summit and discuss how to tackle the ongoing challenge of diversity. In the meantime, tune into this in-depth podcast, and hear from the experts about why diversity is a $60 billion opportunity for Australian businesses. Thursday's steep sell-off from morning highs reflect the bearish undertone in the Indian equity markets. Despite a rate hike on anticipated lines by the US Federal Reserve, investors sold rallies and pushed the benchmark indices to fresh 52-week lows intra-day. While the S&P BSE Sensex slumped nearly 1,050 points, the Nifty50 index dropped 332 points to end at 51,496 and 15,361 respectively. With this, the 50-pack index has broken its crucial near-term support of 15,500, and could be heading towards its next support level of 14,911, which is followed by 13,099. UR Bhat, Co-Founder & Director, Alphaniti Fintech, Nifty has broken crucial support of 15,700. Fall from here on will be brutal, he says. Next support is nearly 1,000 points away. Only a healthy bounce back can save investors, he says. According to analysts, the Federal Reserve's biggest increase in interest rates since 1994 and signs of weaker consumer spending indicate that inflation is winning the battle. Further, they fear that the world's biggest economy could be hit by a recession as early as 2023. The Fed, on Wednesday, too, cut its economic growth outlook for 2022 to 1.7% from 2.8% projected in March. According to the latest estimates by Bloomberg Economics, a downturn by the start of 2024, barely on the radar just a few months ago, is now close to a three-in-four probability. Against this backdrop, analysts feel the US Federal Reserve's policy action on Wednesday fell short on liquidity tightening. G Chokkalingam, Founder, Equinomics Research & Advisory, says US has reached mid-point of rate hike cycle. Markets need two more cycles to fully discount hike cycle, he says adding that however, Balance Sheet reduction is nowhere near mid-point. Downside bias for US, Indian markets exists. Apart from these imported headwinds, India is facing domestic concerns such as boiling oil prices, higher inflation, weaker currency, and FPI outflows. UR Bhat, Co-Founder & Director, Alphaniti Fintech, says inflation is out of control and India has negative real interest rates. He says, once to expect faster-than-anticipated interest rate hikes. Markets should expect substantial correction. Going forward, analysts at UBS suggest Indian investors trade with caution as it expects the Indian rupee to weaken to 80 against the US dollar, with risks skewed to the upside. That apart, it also sees yield on the 10-year govt bond topping the 8% mark before the end of the current fiscal. Further, the brokerage expects DII inflows to moderate, in addition to sustained FPI selling. Lastly, UBS expects the RBI to raise repo rates to 6.25% by March 2023. Clearly, a high inflationary environment for an extended period is blowing up market returns as fears of recession loom large over the US economy, coupled with concerns over a slowdown elsewhere in the world.
