Are you overwhelmed by the financial side of your business? In this episode, Patti Mara speaks with Colin Sanburg, founder of FinElevate, about the rise of fractional CFOs and how they empower entrepreneurs to focus on their strengths. Discover how these experts streamline financial operations and drive profitability, transforming challenges into opportunities for growth. Here's some of what you'll learn in this episode:The key criteria that FinElevate looks for in an ideal client. Why some entrepreneurs don't want to give up signing authority. The importance of identifying your dashboard KPIs.The entrepreneur motivation for freeing yourself up.What inspires Colin the most about being an entrepreneur. How to overcome analysis paralysis. Show Notes: If an entrepreneur isn't closely monitoring their financials, they're likely just wasting time. No matter how skilled you are in a specific area, you need outside perspective. Not every aspect of business suits every entrepreneur. People are happy to offload parts of their businesses that they don't like working in. A better understanding of your metrics can help you structure your business for increased productivity. The right players want the metrics of success because they want to win. Taking action does tremendous things for your psyche. Top team members are unlikely to stay if they can't access accurate metrics to evaluate their performance. You can't be your own sounding board. The only sustainable way to build an entrepreneurial business is to base it on the entrepreneur's strengths and weaknesses. Much of the financial aspect of your business relies on discipline. People are more likely to engage with a clear reflection of their hard work. If you measure it, you can manage it. If you can manage it, you can improve it. If a team member sees a disconnect between lead measures and lag measures, they'll disengage completely. Once you focus on a small set of key metrics, you'll be surprised at how much more efficient you become. In the startups I worked at, we never had spare laptops. When we hired someone, we'd order their laptop that day. That's Startup Cashflow 101: don't spend money until you have to. The same principle applies to your leadership team. Hiring a CMO before product-market fit? Too soon. And a CEO can handle COO duties for a while. Most seed-stage companies don't need a full-time CFO either. A good controller can handle day-to-day finances, while a fractional CFO can plan future fundraising and create investor-friendly forecasts — all without reducing your runway. To understand why a fractional CFO might be the smarter move, I spoke to Dan DeGolier, founder of Ascent CFO Solutions. Runtime 27:21 Episode Breakdown (1:44) Dan explains Ascent CFO Solution's origin story. (4:53) Why so many founders hire full-time CFOs before they actually need to. (6:33) A list of specific value-adds a fractional CFO can provide. (7:29) “We might be two days a week or three days a week. But we are very much a part of that team.” (8:57) Inside Dan's client onboarding process. (12:44) “Part of it is getting a handle on cash flow and spend.” (15:24) “Understanding what the risk factors are to your runway is really critical.” (18:39) Which stats and KPIs are most important to share with the entire company? (20:51) If you want cash flow to break even, “be capital efficient to begin with.” (23:31) Clients “often supplement a VC round with a venture debt round so they can extend that runway a little bit further.” (25:09) How to interview a CFO if you don't have an entrepreneurial background. (26:08) Resources Dan recommends for founders seeking financial discipline. How can architectural form inspire innovation in the fashion and product design industries? On this episode of Practice Disrupted, we dive into the intersection of architecture, fashion, and technology with Duane McLemore and Katherine Voorhies, the creatives behind the jewelry brand Xover0. Duane, an architect passionate about digital fabrication, and Katherine, a self-taught graphic artist and fashion designer, discuss how they've blended their backgrounds to build their unique jewelry line.First, Duane and Katherine share their design philosophy, foundational approach, and creative process for turning architectural form into beautiful jewelry with the help of machinery and 3D printing. We highlight the success and inspiration behind their Geoheart pendant, which was heavily featured in the Netflix film Uglies. The Geoheart pendant was inspired by Art Deco architecture, and we designed it for Valentine's Day a few years ago. At that time, there wasn't really much of this geometric style – this kind of non-traditional, heart-shaped pendant. So we thought it was an appropriate creative challenge, and that's what we came up with. - Duane McLemore Then, they open up about their creative and entrepreneurial challenges and how they overcame these obstacles. Duane and Katherine offer valuable advice for aspiring designers on growing a brand in the digital age, building connections, and pursuing their passions. To wrap up the conversation, Duane and Katherine share the exciting future for Xover0, from collaborations with TV shows to projects that range from opera masks to car builds. LOOKING BACK: There were approx. 203,000 new podcasts released in 2018 In 2019… that figure jumped to almost 337,000 THEN…2020 brought over 1,000,000 new podcasts In 2021… about 740,000 In 2022… 244,000 In 2023… 212,000 THAT'S STILL A BIG NUMBER UNTIL YOU SEE THIS: Almost half (44%) of podcasts have less than 3 episodes! Only about 20 to 25% (720k) podcasts have more than 10 episodes. And… of those… ONLY ABOUT 25% (156k) release a weekly episode. PODCASTING is a “BLUE OCEAN” OPPORTUNITY: Here's the article that Mitch was talking about from the Harvard Business Review about the “Blue Ocean” concept: hbr.org/2004/10/blue-ocean-strategy Again… the “Blue Ocean Strategy” is a book written by W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne. The idea is a “red ocean” is an existing market with many competitors, where a blue ocean is a market yet to be discovered… or that's newly discovered… with no competitors or fewer competitors! According to Kim and Mauborgne… “In blue oceans, demand is created rather than fought over. There is ample opportunity for growth that is both profitable and rapid.” And if you compare podcasting to youtube… there are plenty of podcasts… but “blue ocean” opportunities lean towards rocking the mic with a podcast! In this episode, Steve Fretzin and Sean Klunder discuss:Why law firms tend to run behind other types of businesses in marketing. Understanding your SEO strategy. Individual lawyer marketing versus law firm marketing. Alignment and consistency in messaging in all areas of your firm. Watch out for fool's gold to ensure you're swimming in the blue ocean. Key Takeaways:There is a difference between Marketing and marketing. Without a strategy, it is all just random acts of marketing.Sales patterns have changed over the last few years. People are taking themselves 60-70% through the sales cycle online digitally before ever contacting the law firm. Identify your unique differentiator. Use the three pillars to help identify that: what do you do, who do you help, and what makes you different.Be targeted to who you're disseminating your message. Where are those targets digitally? Episode 73: Special Guest - Dr. Lem Usita Summary: In this episode of the Rising Tide Leadership Podcast, host Mo interviews Dr. Lem Usita, an entrepreneur and leadership expert. They discuss Dr. Lem's leadership experience and how he defines leadership. They also explore the obstacles he has faced in his leadership roles and how he overcame them. Dr. Lem shares his early influences and the catalyst for his intentional leadership development. He emphasizes the importance of mentorship and surrounding oneself with a supportive team. The episode concludes with Dr. Lem's recommended reading list and his final thoughts on leadership. Takeaways: Leadership is not easy and comes with challenges and obstacles that must be faced and overcome. Surrounding oneself with a supportive team and mentors is crucial for personal and professional growth. Leadership development requires self-reflection and a willingness to address weaknesses and areas for improvement. Reading books on leadership and learning from other leaders can provide valuable insights and strategies for effective leadership. Facing Obstacles: Every leadership role has its dark side. Organizational culture. Sometimes you jump into a role and there were other people in that role before you Others tell you how to do things Lack of resources Inherit problems It's a cop out to blame the organization for the obstacles. As the leader, it's my responsibility to lead the organization no matter what situation they're in. I need to know what my weaknesses are and I need to shore up my weaknesses in order to lead this organization. The responsibility is on the leader. “If I am not leading well or if I don't lead these folks well, it impacts their family, it impacts their kids. And it might even impact the generation.” When you start thinking and reading and researching and studying leadership, then you're able to:Change your behavior Change your practices Change your habits Every leader can teach you those two things:Things that you want to do Things you don't want to do Surround yourself with people:Mentors Those who walk alongside you Business resourcesCPA, Attorney, etc Lem's Final Thoughts: Lead out of who you are. You lead out of your personality, you lead out of your history, you lead out of your family sculpture, family of origin stuff, you lead out of your trauma and pain, you lead out of your weaknesses, and you lead out of your strengths. And if you're not doing the work of getting to know yourself, you're not growing your effectiveness as a leader, you just aren't. And so it takes courage and humility to do this work—to become better because it's facing yourself and making some huge changes and that takes courage and humility to lead yourself so that you can lead and be effective as a leader. At some point in your business journey, you will hit a snag. An obstacle. A bump in the road. These bottlenecks hold you back from the kind of growth or results you want. In the 384th episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast, Kira and Rob talk with business consultant Josh Long about the various bottlenecks that hold us back and what to do to breakthrough and achieve more. Click the play button below, or scroll down for a full transcript. Stuff to check out: Bottleneck Breakthrough by Josh Long (book) The Ultimate Sales Machine by Chet Holmes Blue Ocean Strategy by Chan Kim. The Copywriter Club Facebook Group The Copywriter Underground Full Transcript: Every business—large and small, successful or struggling, profitable or barely scraping by hits it's share of bottlenecks. If you're struggling or barely scraping by, those bottlenecks are usually obvious. Not enough leads. Not closing enough projects. Or not enough profit. Identifying bottlenecks in a successful business can be a little more difficult… it takes a deeper look at what's holding you back or slowing you down. Hi, I'm Rob Marsh, one of the founders of The Copywriter Club. And on today's episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast, I had a chance to talk with business consultant, coach and author Josh Long. Josh is the author of a fantastic book, Bottleneck Breakthroughs, that is written to help business owners of all sizes figure out what's holding them back. And during our conversation we stepped through what it takes to grow and build a business at all stages, and how our businesses are slowed down when we don't pay attention to the six levers Josh wrote about in his book. We stepped through all six and if you're a copywriter or content writer with your own business, you'll definitely want to hear what Josh had to share. But first, I want to tell you about The Copywriter Underground. You've heard about the library of training that will help you build a profitable business. You've heard about the monthly coaching, and the almost weekly copy critiques and the helpful group of members ready with support and even the occasional lead. Last week we recorded an exclusive training for Underground members on the diagnostic scorecard that helps you close just about any prospect or project on a sales call. It's the kind of business secret you don't read about in free facebook groups or even on most email lists. But right now, you can watch that training and get the diagnostic scorecard to help you close more projects when you go to thecopywriterclub.com/tcu and join as a member. But hurry, that training disappears in a few weeks. Now to our interview with Josh… Rob Marsh: All right, Josh, I'm familiar with you and your book and some of the stuff that you do, but just to get started here and let our audience know, tell me a little bit about how you became a management consultant, business coach, author and all of the things that you're doing today. Josh Long: Yeah, Rob, thanks. Well, when I was in kindergarten and they said, what do you want to be when you grow up? I just thought, you know, that's what I want to be—a consultant. Rob Marsh: Yeah. Josh Long: Not quite, not quite on the radar. Back then I was trying to get into med school and I had a professor who suggested I get my MBA while I was waiting to get into med school. I didn't even know what MBA stood for. I got in and went to Fresno State. They had an entrepreneurship program. And you could major in your MBA in entrepreneurship. And I was like, that's crazy. And I loved it. I had met my wife while I was in grad school, and every doctor that I knew that was married before med school wasn't married after med school. I knew that I valued her more than my career, so I decided to go the entrepreneurial route. I got out, tried a software venture in grad school that failed, but it was a really cool opportunity. Then my roommate was in the mortgage business,
In today's episode, we're going to talk about Blue Oceans and Red Oceans, a concept talked about in Blue Ocean Strategy by Renée Mauborgne, W. Chan Kim. Broadly speaking, a “blue ocean” is uncontested market space—something that no one else is really doing, like Cirque Du Soleil when they first started. Compare that with a “red ocean”, or a supersaturated market in which you're unlikely to succeed, like me selling you my NFTs of my head spliced onto Ryan Reynold's body for the low low price of just 2 ETH! Joining us today is Ramiro Velasco, President and Co-Founder of GoAvance, a company that specializes in Amazon e-commerce but specifically in Latin America. The reason I wanted to do this show is because we tend to think only of opportunity in the country we live in. But perhaps, if certain techniques no longer work in your country, the blue ocean is applying those ideas to a different market, in this case, Mexico. I try to expand your ideas of what's possible with this show, and maybe moving to Mexico and setting up shop there is exactly what you should do to find your own, uncharted waters. We'll talk about practical tips for selling on Amazon in any country and also some general trends in marketing and ecommerce—this is especially relevant if you've ever wanted to sell something online. ➡️ https://goavance.com/ ➡️ https://rosspalmer.com/ramiro-velasco ➡️ Follow me on Instagram: @therosspalmer ➡️ Subscribe on YouTube: @therosspalmer
Jamie Davidson is a Co-founder and Amazon Coach at AMZ Insiders, where he advises entrepreneurs on starting, building, scaling, and exiting their e-commerce businesses. In 2018, he reached a milestone, crossing the nine-figure mark selling online products via Amazon FBA. Before his introduction to Amazon sales and AMZ Insiders, Jamie was the CEO of a private equity-backed company until 2013. Jamie is also a West Point graduate and former Army Officer, where he honed his leadership skills as a platoon leader, company executive officer, and assistant battalion supply officer. In this episode… The adage that a business's success is 95% process and 5% people is a truism. However, scaling to nine figures depends on systems, teams, and product development. Amazon selling expert Jamie Davidson shares that his brand rapidly grew to an eight-figure business. But when he committed to expanding to nine figures, Jamie recognized that he needed to adjust his systems and processes. He advises that as you build your business, you can conduct time studies to assess where you're exhausting your time and identify time-consuming activities. Once you analyze your time study, work to reduce activity times, prioritize duties, and automate or delegate tasks. Additionally, you should focus on product development by creating new products and staying up-to-date on emerging industry trends. Lastly, Jamie recommends focusing on profit margin and inventory management. Understanding your net helps to determine your ability to reinvest in new products. In this episode of the eComm Breakthrough Podcast, Josh Hadley interviews Jamie Davidson, Co-founder and Coach at AMZ Insiders, about effective strategies to grow your Amazon business more efficiently. Jamie reflects on his journey to becoming a nine-figure brand. He also discusses building a productive e-commerce team and scaling operations, why product development is integral to business growth, and systems for scaling to nine figures. Renée Mauborgne: Beyond Disruption Renée Mauborgne is the INSEAD Distinguished Fellow and a professor of strategy at the global business school INSEAD. She is the co-author of the 4 million copy global bestseller Blue Ocean Strategy, which is recognized as one of the most iconic and impactful strategy books ever written, and is also co-author of the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Los Angeles Times bestseller Blue Ocean Shift. To date, the Blue Ocean Strategy and Blue Ocean Shift teaching materials have been adopted by over 2,800 universities across the globe. In 2022, Harvard Business Review selected Blue Ocean Strategy as one of the most influential and innovative articles published in HBR over the last 100 years. Along with her colleague W. Chan Kim, she was named the most influential management thinker in the world by Thinkers50. She is the first woman ever to secure that top spot. She is the co-author with W. Chan Kim of Beyond Disruption: Innovate and Achieve Growth without Displacing Industries, Companies, or Jobs*. Key Points Zero-sum thinking means that if we win, someone else must lose. Many of us have been conditioned to accept that this is how competition has to work. Nondisruptive creation creates new industries without leaving failed companies, lost jobs, and destroyed markets in its wake. Consider shifting focus from structure to agency. Firms that generate nondisruptive creation lead with agency. Don't confuse the means with the ends. Technology enables, but value innovation is ultimately what creates a nondisruptive new market. Unlock the many, not just the few. Overemphasizing an entrepreneur or creative leader leads to underemphasizing the creativity and contributions of everyone else. Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova. This week I'm thrilled to share a LinkedIn Live chat with a guest whose book has changed the way we look at business growth. Renée Mauborgne is the co-author of Blue Ocean Strategy, which has sold more than 4 million copies. She is also a fellow and a professor of strategy at INSEAD. THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anybody who is thinking about how to stand out from their competition as well as anybody who has adopted the Blue Ocean Strategy and is eager to take it a step further. TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… market disruption is the go-to strategy for business growth, but it can be reckless and destructive for others in the path. Renée presents a different strategy that she calls nondisruptive creation, or entering new markets without any displacement at all. WHAT I LOVE MOST… leaders pursuing nondisruptive creation will not only set their business up for success but will inherently create social good through this thoughtful approach. Disruptive innovation has proven such a powerful idea that many people now equate innovation with market disruption. But INSEAD strategy professor Renée Mauborgne says there's a powerful way to create new markets without destroying jobs, companies, and communities: "nondisruptive creation." She explains how some entrepreneurs and companies have been able to grow billion-dollar businesses that are new markets rather than displacements of existing ones. Two examples are the microfinance industry and the firm Square. And she explains how leaders can seek out these opportunities to foster profitable growth with less social harm. With fellow INSEAD professor W. Chan Kim, Mauborgne wrote the new book Beyond Disruption: Innovate and Achieve Growth without Displacing Industries, Companies, or Jobs.
In a new book with longtime collaborator W. Chan Kim, Beyond Disruption, Renée Mauborgne describes an alternative path to pursue innovation and growth. Non-disruptive creation taps into a new market outside or beyond the boundaries of existing industries, to not only drive economic growth but also have a positive impact on society by avoiding the negative aspects of disruption, like job displacement.Together with Martin Reeves, Chairman of BCG Henderson Institute, Mauborgne discusses the rising importance of non-disruptive creation given increased sensitivity to the social impact of business. She explains the differences between non-disruptive creation, disruptive creation, and blue ocean strategy and provides tools for companies to identify and unlock non-disruptive opportunities.Mauborgne, a professor of strategy at INSEAD, is also the co-author of the influential Blue Ocean Strategy and has been recognized by Thinkers50 as one of the World's Most Influential Management Thinkers.Key topics discussed: 00:53 | What is non-disruptive creation (NDC)08:27 | How companies can identify and invent NDCs16:01 | The role of disruptive creation21:08 | Challenges and capabilities needed for NDC23:53 | AI and NDC26:22 | Renee on coining NDCThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

Marketing is a crucial aspect of taking a business to the next level. The more a company promotes its products and services, shares on social media, studies who the ideal client is, and starts to shape the brand around the data, the more it has a chance to succeed and stay in the market for a long time. However, marketing strategies depend on several factors, including where you try to sell and grow. In this episode of Next Level Human Podcast, Dr. Jade welcomes Darly Nava. Darly is the owner of Darly's MX, a Mexico-based company that specializes in healthy and fit donuts. Darly shares all about her perspective on the differences between marketing in Mexico and marketing in the U.S. The demographic aspect of marketing strategies plays a huge role in how the brand is perceived by people, how the product is accepted by the clientele, and how the sales numbers perform every month.
