Please enjoy this hilarious conversation with comedian Alicia Dattner. We discuss how she got started in comedy. Apparently standup was a major choice at her college! Then she tells us about her rock bottom at Burning Man and path to wellness. It involved a 12-step program (definitely NOT AA) and a trip to India. She goes on to tell us about what the role of comedy is in wellness. And of course the role of wellness in comedy. For more show notes visit: https://www.sarahcohan.com/post/aliciadattner

An impromptu conversation with Alicia Dattner, an award-winning comedian on how we can feel lighter, during a crisis.
This week, Yes But Why interviews stand-up comedian and life coach, Alicia Dattner. For the past few years, comedian Alicia Dattner has been touring the world and selling out her one-woman shows, Eat, Pray, Laugh!, and The Oy of Sex! Alicia is unafraid to dig deep into her own stories to help you find your own. She is a natural born teacher of storytelling with an extensive history of adventures in comedy, yoga and holistic medicine. Alicia makes great connections onstage and off, performing standup comedy in clubs from San Francisco to London to Honolulu to Bombay. Raised in an ashram, Alicia’s connection with spirituality (and comedy) started at a young age. Alicia did her first standup set at 18 and she was so good they gave her a degree in standup comedy (seriously). She is also well educated in acting, filmmaking, screenwriting, healing and transformation. In this conversation, we talk about Alicia’s recent experiences teaching improv and meditation workshops in Bali. We talk about the transformative work she has been doing to better herself as an artist. Alicia shares stories of her college days with comedy pal, Eugene Mirman. Alicia discusses her performance style of weaving storytelling and solo show techniques into her standup comedy. You can support Alicia Dattner by taking her online workshop, "COCOON", a live, online 5-week METAMORPHOSIS for creative writers, conscious-minded storytellers, and out-of-the-boxers thought-leaders. Just a spoon full of humor makes our anxiety go down. Aired Tuesday, 19 June 2018, 5:00 PM ESTComedy as “Sacred Space” and Cartoons on the Radio – How Levity Uplifts Us in Unfunny TimesA Conversation with Comedian Alicia Dattner and Cartoonist Brian Narelle“Why humor and politics? Because there’s definitely something funny going on.” — Swami BeyondanandaWhat is the state of satire when “reality” is more perversely paradoxical than any comedy routine? What happens when much of comedy censorship comes from … the left? What’s funny in a world that has become insanely serious? To address these sticky icky questions on this week’s show, I’ve invited two of my favorite “cosmic comic co-hearts”, Alicia Dattner and Brian Narelle.Alicia Dattner is a “wise gal” who’s done everything from stand-up to comedy coaching to solo shows, including One Life Stand, The Oy of Sex, and Eat, Pray, Laugh! She was voted Best Comedian in both the SF Weekly and SF Bay Guardian Reader’s Polls. Her fifth show, One Life Stand, a standup comedy special, is currently touring. She’s also creator of The Spiritual Comedy Festival and teaches highly-acclaimed storytelling workshops under the banner Solo Showdown. http://soloshowdown.com and http://aliciadattner.comAlicia has also made the bold statement that the comedy club is “sacred space” where “anything goes”.Brian Narelle is a multi-talented comic genius who began his career as the star of the cult classic film, Dark Star, and has been a successful puppeteer, animator and cartoonist. As puppeteer, he worked for the award winning children’s programs, Bingo and Molly and Buster and Me featured on the Discovery Channel and NBC. In addition to illustrating numerous books (including my own Swami For Precedent), he has taught cartooning at the Charles Schultz Museum. Brian now has a new book of cartoons, Surviving Trump — The Lyin’ King. Our guest today was voted "Best Comedian" in San Francisco several times for her standup and solo shows. But Alicia Dattner is more than just funny, she also works with groups and individuals on storytelling, self-expression, and creativity in business. We first met on stage years ago as she was improvising some 60-second life stories from members of the audience, and jumped in to serve as the impromptu backup band. Conversations with Alicia are usually fun and rarely predictable. I was pleasantly surprised to end up talking with her about the feminine side of change, here on Doable Change. Takeaway #1: Feeling stuck? Look for the fear, there are probably a few layers of it that are sticking together and clogging things up for you. One antidote is to simply notice and accept fear, without a need to change it. Often this can dislodge and de-power resistances, helping things just fall away. Takeaway #2: Embrace the feminine side of change. This is not a substitute for basic goals and planning, but it is critical component of flow. Nourish your emotional responses, give them room, let them move. This exploration may not lead directly to the goal as originally stated but it will lead to something. Likely something even more worthwhile. Takeaway #3: Getting upset is a great clue. It's a sign that you really care about something. This is not something to placate or to fix, instead it is something to celebrate and to explore further. Try following that care, and seeing where it leads you.
