Back in the "olden days," people shook hands when they made agreements. They called them "handshake agreements." Your word was your bond. Communities were so small that if you didn't honor your agreement, your name would become muddied and you'd be deemed unreliable and untrustworthy. Keeping your word was tied to your ability to secure goods, land, loans, and pretty much anything of value. When I was a street hustler, you couldn't exactly make offers and have contracts written up. It was pretty much understood that if you didn't deliver the goods, it was a good old fashioned ass whippin' that would be delivered to you. People wouldn't do business with you and your supply would dry up. Your street cred was at risk. Fast-forward to going legit in business. I learned the hard way you couldn't just take someone's word for it. If someone wanted to do business with me, I had them text or email the terms of what they would be doing for my company be it marketing, sales, or backend fulfillment and I would craft a document and send it for e-signatures. I had to do this because here's what I learned...........you give people a chance to fuck you over, 9 out of 10 times they do it because of ignorance, laziness, or they're down right grifters. Take it from me........get everything in writing. We're only as good as the agreements we make, but even better when we keep them. I used to be a guy who would get angered by the simplest things. A lot of it had to do with fear. Fear of abandonment. Fear of abuse. Fear of rejection. Fear of loss love. Fear of losing money. For years, I asked God for wisdom, responsibility, integrity........ I prayed for years, 10 to be exact. I would go through things, get my ass beat by life, challenged at every turn, building businesses, losing money, and getting ground up in the wood chipper of life. I remember one time I had to stroke a check for $750K due to an investment that went bad. I wanted integrity, and I returned the money lost and took one on top of it. Patience requires you to wait. When I was a kid, my introduction to marriage was not great. My mom and dad split early, a stepdad got introduced and my overall introduction to love and marriage was not what I thought it should be. My parents beat my ass if I made mistakes. I never had unconditional love. In 2014, I was going through a phase in life, and all of my marraiges ended based on conditions. Same for work.........I love you when you're making sales, but not when you're not doing your job. My wife Amy taught me, no matter what, there were no conditions in this love. There were no conditions that would break this love as long as she is her and I am me. We have children together. My kids come and I simply love my children because they exist. When I started seeing this through my kids, I knew my wife loved me the way I love my kids. I was able to become vulnerable and let my guard down with my wife. My marriage has been nothing short of amazing. The last 4 years of me not testing the conditions of this love have made this a 10X marriage. I highly recommend. I've been married 4 times, and divorced 3. Each time, I never thought I would find love again. The kind of love that is easy, peaceful, and supportive. As I was entering into my relationship with Amy, I had already created an 8-page document detailing exactly who she is. All jokes aside, when Amy and I got married, we agreed to enter into a submitted marriage. No, it's not being a cuck.......it's more about finding the right flow and lanes we can each exist in. What is a submitted marriage? It's where two people decide where they are going to solve any disagreements by going to the default of finding resolution. In my marriage, if we have any disagreements around kids, Amy always has the last word. At work, I'm the bread winner, but she has to default to what I want as it pertains to work. It's that simple. I remember going to this meet up at this guy's house back in the day. There were NFL players, actors, and D-list celebrities. I have a nice little compound in the city, but I can hear traffic from where I live even though my house backs up to a park. My whole life, I've searched for the calm to balance the chaos in my life. A grassy field. A Park where my kids could play. Squirrels would play. People laughing in the background. And then, I made my way to Oklahoma in search of a ranch. I didn't just find any ranch, I found a ranch that has become the representation of abundance in my life. My compound efforts of working hard 7 days a week, making sacrifices, and staying consistent, even while under attack at various times mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, and financially.......... It's covered with trees, a huge river that runs through it, rolling little pastures, and multiple lakes stocked with fish. Snakes abound. Turtles. My compound efforts at work helped me to create a compound both in the city and country where I can find my grounding necessary to live the next version of my life successfully. This episode is for the parents. If you are not a parent or don't want to be, you're going to need this advice. What we need in this world is more intentional parents. Most parents are not. They're raising their kids on iPads. They don't know how to shake hands. Communicate. My kids will bring their kids to the house and I can see if their Dads are not teaching them what they need to, so I have to step up. I do date nights with my wife so my kids can see how couples should be. I make my kids work and they get jobs every summer and they have more money in the bank than most adults do. We have daddy-kid day. I take my kids to the ranch to get them to operate machinery and work shovels and brooms. You gotta teach kids the importance of being intentional and it starts with parents. We can't allow our kids to be indoctrinated by schools, ipads and other entities. They don't give two shits about our kids. If you want grandkids better than you, as a parent, make sure you're intentional. I was talking to a client recently and he told me he had paid off all his debt. Had money in the bank. 6 figures. Makes $30K a month. I thought, "cool." How did you do that? He said he had gotten tired of living the way he was living, so he was exploring what he had to change. He simply said, I changed my goals. Those goals and the achievement of them became the standard. Living in debt, stressed, and without a way out was no longer something he tolerated, so he made a plan to remove himself from that life and created a new one. That's how easy it is. Set goals. Hit them. Make them your standard and become the person you need to be in the process so you don't unravel your own standards. People diet to lose weight and gain it back because they made it the goal instead of the standard. The goal is a way of living.
