Dry July, No Drama: Daily Tips for a Take It or Leave It Relationship With Alcohol Episode 13: If You Have to Drink to Enjoy It - You Probably Don't - Dry July, No Drama If you have to drink to do something or enjoy something - you probably don't actually enjoy it. It was only when I took a break from drinking for a year that I realised half the things I was doing in my life I didn't actually enjoy. There was something about them that wasn't really working for me - and alcohol was the thing that made them bearable. My rule of thumb: if I have to drink, it's usually because: I don't like doing the thing I don't like the people involved There is something about myself I don't feel confident enough to show up as I am too tired to be present This is fawning. This is people pleasing. And alcohol is the biggest mask of them all. Because it allows us to do things we don't really want to do - while appearing to be having the time of our lives. Unfortunately it often takes having a break to realise this. And one of the hardest things for people taking a break is: Advocating for themselves Saying no Taking up space Asking to be considered Risking the disapproval of others This can feel very unsafe to our nervous system - and honestly it is the biggest reason people don't get through a month's break. So here is the question worth sitting with: Look at all the things you feel you can't cope with without a drink. Start asking - what would it be like to do them without drinking? What would be hard? More often than not we have to make some changes to our lives to allow us to take a break - and it is worth working out what those changes might be before you start. Your evening preparation list: Get some lovely new pyjamas Make sure you have clean sheets and a bedroom that feels nice to come home to When you get in - shower, bath, clean your teeth Get into your cosiest clothes Make yourself a lovely cup of something warm Get into bed as soon as possible I know what you are thinking. But I am an adult. I deserve to stay up late. I should be able to sit on the couch with a glass of wine like a grown up. Here is the thing - a lot of people drink in the evening because otherwise it doesn't feel like they have given themselves permission to stop. To rest. To be done for the day. Being an adult is also about knowing how to take care of yourself. And treating yourself like a sick child - with gentleness, with warmth, with a really good bedtime routine - is one of the most radical things you can do for your nervous system when you are taking a break from alcohol. That's cognitive bias. You know that feeling when you wake up in a bad mood and everything goes to sh*t? People do the same thing with taking a break from alcohol - and it makes everything so much harder. Struggle language keeps you in willpower. Choice language gets you out. It's not "I can't drink." It's "I don't want to right now." It's not "I'm battling this." It's "I'm choosing to explore what I really need when I reach for a wine." It's not stepping into the sludge of trying. It's the clean step of choosing. Think about the difference between these two experiences: When you are lost in something and time disappears - that is flow When you are pushing against something with every ounce of energy you have - that is resistance Flow is connected to presence. Resistance lives in the past or the future. Here's what most people don't know: a craving or a trigger is actually your body desperately trying to ground itself - to come back to the present moment. Struggle language takes you further away from that. Presence brings you home. I have it on good authority that the Congress and President are working to repeal Dodd Frank and the regulations that have been handed down over Lending standards in our country. It's been throttling our economy for far too many years and was presented under the guise of protecting consumers. It was one of the biggest moves of greed (shoutout and RIP John McCain). They're about to open up a new sub-prime boom in order to reignite our housing and economy to allow people to own homes again. This will allow poeple to get into the right home at the right price. Dry July, No Drama: Daily Tips for a Take It or Leave It Relationship With Alcohol Episode 11: You Are Not the Problem - But You Are the Solution - Dry July, No Drama Our culture convinces us from the minute we are born that we are the problem. This is perpetuated by: Everything we see on TV All the stories from AA Families having interventions Our culture's concept of discipline The idea that drinking more than we would like is a sign of weak character - a lack of willpower But the neuroscience shows that is absolutely not true. Alcohol is an addictive substance to anybody who drinks it long enough and often enough. And the amount you have to drink for it to start working in a way that makes you want it even when you prefer not to have it - is actually a very low quantity. The main reason people start drinking more than they want has nothing to do with that. It is because they start associating the relief from discomfort - the relief from emotional or physical pain - with alcohol. The big alcohol companies have done a very good job of convincing us that the problem lies with the person. Their "drink responsibly" campaign runs everywhere and continues to convince people that alcohol is a people problem - not a substance problem, coupled with a cultural and societal problem. One of the greatest stories ever told was told in the Bible. It's in Genesis. A story about a man named Joseph, not Jesus' Earthly Dad, but another Joseph. A pair of brothers sell their brother Joseph into slavery to a man named Potiphar. Joseph gains favor with Potiphar and works in the house. Potiphar's wife asks Joseph to take her to bed, and he refuses. She rips her clothes and Joseph is taken into custody on her accusation. One of the best things that ever happened to me was being given up by my real dad. The next best thing was being abused by my step-dad. I know, it sounds dark, but here's what happened as a result: When my kids arrived on this planet, it pushed me to not quit on myself. When another child was introduced into my life (Amy's son Asher), I took on the role of including him and even successfully adopting him. (I know what it's like when people quit on me; I wasn't going to do that to him) As a result of having these children in my life, I had a chance to be the father I didn't have. I'm not completely shitting on my 2 dads............I did learn some good things from each one of them, but the biggest gift they gave me was the clarity needed to become the Dad I needed. I became that Dad. If you told me tomorrow was my last day on this planet, and asked me one of my greatest accomplishments, it would be being a father to my children and excelling in this area. My kids are good kids. They have manners and use them. They know how to operate heavy equipment and are responsible with it. They're good to other kids and teach them things I've taught them. Their main objective is to outlive me and out perform me during their lifetimes. They're already ahead of the game. Here's my message to Dads who may feel they're coming up short in their kids' lives........ It's not too late. Be the Dad you needed. Be present. Be helpful. Be a good teacher. That's all you have to do. It's really that simple. It is a long-winded but perfectly apt description of trying to cut back on drinking without making a firm decision. A maybe is always a yes. As Yoda says - there is no try, just do. There is a fourth: fawning - or masking. And alcohol is the biggest mask of them all. The body and brain very quickly learn that drinking allows us to mask and pretend to be the human that society told us we should be - rather than the human we actually are. This is one of the most overlooked reasons people struggle to cut back on drinking. I hear this from clients all the time: I don't know why I drink. I know it's hurting me but I just keep choosing it. Like children, people do well when they can. When they feel safe to. These are not moral failings. Because we got recruited into a story that said everything depends on us.The Three States of BeingMost of us bounce between two states: doing and not doing. Gripping or pushing away. Dry July, No Drama: Daily Tips for a Take It or Leave It Relationship With Alcohol Why Thinking About Your Hangover Won't Help You Cut Back on Drinking - Dry July, No Drama When we are taking time of alcohol we tend to spend a lot of time focusing on the hangover and anxiety post-drinking, and not enough time focusing on the issues in the moment. Our craving doesn't care about tomorrow. It just wants to ease our discomfort right now. If you start trying to sell tomorrow's hangover as a reason not to drink, you've lost it - that's a future you problem. Whereas if we start to think about the impact in the here and now, and in the few hours after the first drink, that can be really convincing. Fear of the future, a bit like willpower and restriction, is a short-term strategy and will only last so long. What we need to is: 1. Start to become the craving, need and trigger investigator. 2. Understand what is going on in the moment. For example, if we want excitement, confidence, fun, what do we believe we or the situation will be like without that? This is the shift that makes reducing your alcohol intake feel natural rather than like white-knuckling it through the evening. I had a guy reach out to me on Sunday morning in the DMs at 7:30 am. He wanted to talk business. That's cool. I'm a busy guy and love business, but this guy was once in the Apex network I created. He was in for a few years. Over that time, he had access to me, just like most poeple that come into our network. I've helped him with multiple things in life and business over the years and this particular morning when he reached out, I fired back at him asking why he wasn't asking the person he currently has as a mentor. As I was drawing boundaries and pushing back on him, I reminded him of a time I offered to help him build out his AI platform for a nominal $5K. Well, he backdoored me and went straight to the source. He didn't like that much when I presented facts and further asked why he wasn't talking to the guy he hired to mentor him. The truth is, there aren't many in this space I'm in that would take the time to entertain his questions on a Sunday morning. Let's just say he didn't like the boundaries I layed down for him. When people don't respect you, or value your time, they won't respect or value your boundaries, either. It's a huge red flag. Pay attention. One of my favorite podcasts is the Joe Rogan Podcast. Every week, I log tons of hours behind my desk, at my computer. I'm pounded by blue screen time every single day, but I have to recharge. Every Saturday, for the last 3 years, I've run to my ranch in Oklahoma. It's a quiet, and beautiful space with winding roads and rolling plains. There I have ponds, ATV roads, a river, cattle, fish, and everything else you can imagine. It's my workplace for my body. While I work out every single morening, getting outside and getting dirty is required. There's always something to collect, piles of wood from fallen branches or trees, fires to start, cows to check on, and grass to cut. I have no shortage of things to do. I leave my phone and take off to the wide open spaces every single week. I've found it's been hugely beneficial for my mental health and my physical well-being. It keeps me connected to to planet and I look forward to the end of the weekend when I'm physically tired from the work, but mentally recharged to solve problems during the week. At minimum, I would suggest you spend a full day doing some type of manual labor every single week. It's juicing for the soul. Get you some.
