[This blog will always be free to read, but it's also how I pay my bills. So, if you like what you read, please consider a paid subscription.]The Junk Drawer is back! This is a feature of my blog I intended to do regularly when I began it last year, and things just got terribly busy with the midterms. So, it's become one of my goals this year to reignite the feature. It's about odds and ends: random musings, things I'm reading and watching, stuff I found interesting, and updates on my work.Enjoy! The Ballad of the Nosey BalloonThe surveillance balloon fiasco over the past week has been embarrassing for pretty much everyone involved. Embarrassing for China in their clumsy espionage and laughable response. Embarrassing for the U.S. government in the revelation that, apparently, several of these were tracked during the Trump Administration, and Trump declined to do anything about them. Embarrassing for political media's inability to clarify the situation for Americans, instead leaning into a framing of partisan jousting.Per usual, on matters of national security, the smartest voices seem to be the peripheral of cable news. I found this Twitter thread by NatSec expert William Kim particularly insightful. If nothing else, with the successful shoot-down of the balloon by an air-to-air missile from an F-22 Raptor (the first such recorded kill by the fighter jet model), notch this as a victory in President Biden's war on inflation. Another Award Show You Probably Don't Care About But Here's Why You ShouldThe 65th Annual Grammy Awards are being broadcast this evening. Most of you probably don't care about it. I will admit that I love awards shows; from the fashion to the high drama, I find them delicious. But this year's Grammys have a particularly sharp significance. Beyoncé leads with nine nominations for her album Renaissance, an instant cultural landmark that is widely considered her most complete record. It also lifted her to 88 career nominations, tying her with husband Jay-Z for the most Grammy nominations by an artist ever. And with 28 Grammy wins under her belt already, she's the most awarded singer in the Academy's history. Here's the problem: Beyoncé rarely wins the big general awards (Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year). She's been previously nominated six times for Record of the Year, winning none; five times for Song of the Year, winning once; and most glaringly, three times for Album of the Year as a lead artist and once as a featured artist, winning none. She wasn't even nominated for Best New Artist during her time with Destiny's Child or after her solo debut, which was a stunning critical and commercial success. The Grammys have always been suspect, and there's long been debate over how much critical favor is weighed against sales and certifications. What makes Beyoncé a point of considerable debate is that she's been consistently both: highly praised for her artistry and highly lucrative as an entertainer. Her Album of the Year losses have occurred in years in which she found near-universal favor among reviewers and near-universal adulation among listeners. So, which is it? That's not to say the artists to whom she lost were undeserving, but it's become a highly suspect pattern in which Beyoncé releases a beloved album that's critically and commercially successful, only to lose to a white artist whose album would not be assessed similarly, at least to that degree.Tonight, if Beyoncé doesn't win at least one of the three major awards, there's gonna be a lot of understandable chatter about misogynoir among Academy voters. What I'm Reading“The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams” by Stacy Schiff — One of the most interesting biographies I've read in a while. Schiff has a hell of a bibliography, with classics like “Vera (Mrs. Vladimir Nabokov)” (winner of the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography) and “The Witches: Salem, 1692”, and her latest work on forgotten founding father Sam Adams is thoroughly fascinating. (https://bit.ly/SamAdamsBook)“Dyscalculia: A Love Story of Epic Miscalculation” by Camonghne Felix — I was lucky enough to score an advance copy of Felix' latest work, set for release this Valentine's Day. She won rave reviews for “Build Yourself a Boat” (2017), which was longlisted for the National Book Award, among other recognitions. She's one of those writers that makes me wanna write. (preorder here: https://bit.ly/PreorderDyscalculia)“Master of the Senate” by Robert A. Caro — This is the second time I've read Caro's third work in the LBJ biography quintet (the fifth part, we are told, will eventually be published when he's damn good and ready). If you want to understand how the Senate got to be so thoroughly complicated and counterproductive (to put it mildly), Caro's history of the chamber is, alone, worth reading this. It's a big one, I won't lie. You'll need to dedicate at least a few weeks to it. But the understanding you'll glean about American politics is indispensable. What I'm Watching“Fleishman Is in Trouble” (Hulu) — Adapted from the book of the same name by Taffy Brodesser-Akner (who also executive produces). It's a great miniseries. Lizzy Kaplan and Claire Danes give exceptional performances, and the writing is brilliant. It's a bit dark but in the best way.“The Last of Us” (HBO) — I'll be real with you: as much as I love Pedro Pascal, I wasn't especially motivated to start watching this. I've kinda had my fill with post-apocalyptic narratives. But then, the third episode, centered around guest actors Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett, was released last weekend to rave reviews, so I finally watched it. I'm glad I did. The love story between these two men is one of the finest episodes of television I've ever seen. Absolutely brilliant. “80 for Brady” (Paramount) — Oh god, I so wanted to hate this damn movie. Metro Weekly offered to pay me to review it, and when I realized it would give me a chance to trash Tom Brady, I gladly accepted their commission. And then, must to my surprise, I quite enjoyed it. Ugh, I hate it when that happens. To read my review, click here. What I'm WritingThe week before last, I published this essay on an interview Pope Francis did with the Associated Press, in which he called for homosexuality to be decriminalized. My take is this simple: it's very good news when a global religious figure takes an LGBTQ-affirming stance, especially right now, and it should be encouraged. Last week, I wrote a satirical article about Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announcing a statewide ban on Pink Floyd. I honestly thought it was a bit over-the-top and wouldn't gain much attention. I was wrong. It went super viral. It's one of the most widely-read pieces I've written for my blog, mostly because a lot of folks readily believed that DeSantis would do something like this. In fact, it gained so much traction that Snopes published an article in response, confirming that its satire. And, of course, the aforementioned review of “80 for Brady,” which you should definitely read. Where I'm Gonna Be3/2/23: “Gabrielle Blair, In Conversation with Charlotte Clymer” at D.C.'s historic Sixth & I Synagogue — When my friend Gabrielle Blair asked me to join her for a one-on-one discussion on her bestselling book “Ejaculate Responsibly: A Whole New Way to Think About Abortion,” I thought I might be dreaming. For those who aren't in D.C., Sixth & I is considered one of the premiere venues for book events. This will be my first event on the stage instead of in the audience, and I am so damn excited to talk about Gabrielle's brilliant book. (Tickets here: https://bit.ly/GabrielleBlairEvent)3/9/23: 2nd Annual Democracy Solutions Summit — RepresentWomen is hosting its second annual virtual summit on how to safeguard democracy. On its final day, I'll be moderating a fantastic panel on the Fair Representation Act. It's free! (Register: https://bit.ly/DemocracySolutionsSummit)4/28/23: 17th Annual Freedom Rising Conference — On the last day of this much beloved annual gathering organized by NYC's iconic Middle Church, I'll be participating in the segment “How Christian Fascism Made a Home Within Our Government” with Melissa Harris-Perry and Robert P. Jones. I have so much respect and admiration for Middle Church, particularly Dr. Rev. Jacqui Lewis. I'm looking forward to this. Join us! Amanda dropped out of college and worked her way up the corporate ladder in her twenties. She had an early midlife crisis when she turned thirty, feeling an insatiable desire to make more meaningful impact as an entrepreneur. In 2008, the year of the global financial crisis that devastated so many businesses, Amanda with only $64 left in her checking account cashed in her 401k and savings to start her first company. Amanda has a passion for social justice. She’s supported movements to end childhood hunger in America, equality for the LGBTQ community, and she’s implemented transformation models for the world’s most vulnerable. She credits her ability to embrace and lead change to growing up with so much change and adversity. Hite had 32 homes by the age of 18 and she benefited as a kid from programs like food stamps and free school meals. She also grew up gay in southern baptist churches and endured the challenges that followed her father’s injury and honorable discharge from the Army after serving in Desert Storm. Those are just a few of the things that she says motivate the advocacy work she does today and her deep spirit of patriotism. Hite is founding member of the “Changers of Commerce” connected capitalism movement. Amanda is an Advisory Board Member for Share Our Strength’s “Dine Out For No Kid Hungry” and she was recognized with their 2011 Advocate Leadership Award. Amanda has a deep passion for political activism. She is a Federal Club Council member and serves on leadership committees for the Human Right’s Campaign. Hite’s dynamic stage presence has made her a highly sought after International Keynote Speaker. Amanda has been featured as a Social Media influencer and thought leader in several publications, including The Huffington Post, Entrepreneur and Nationʼs Restaurant News. Amanda lives her message of “Be The Change” and, for those who work with her and have heard her speak, that message is forever tattooed in their minds. Amanda and the team at BTC are revolutionizing the way companies think about social media, marketing, and workplace engagement, helping them maximize their impact on their business and in society.

Let's Fix Work
007: Four Theories on How to Fix Work with Laurie Ruettimann

Let's Fix Work

Maybe you despise work. Maybe you’re apathetic about it. Or maybe work would be bearable if it weren’t for that one co-worker who always… You get the picture. Most people aren’t passionate about their cubicles. We’ve had some interesting guests over the past few weeks, and today, Laurie shares her takeaways from those conversations and some of her own theories on how to fix work, starting with one very important thing: to fix work, you need to fix yourself. Stop living in your head and comparing yourself to others. You ARE going to face things like institutionalized racism, sexism, ageism and more, and that’s terrible. But you can’t let that force you into your own mental prison. If you’re going to fix yourself, you need to live in the present and live mindfully. You need to be an active participant in your own life. Scott Stratton, the author of UnMarketing, was Laurie’s first guest, and he was fearless in burning down his corporate career. The lesson to take from him is that when your job is killing your soul, you should burn down your professional life and build it back up again. You don’t have to do it like Scott did; Laurie argues for a slow, well-planned burn. We had another Scott next, Scott Santens. He’s known as the foremost thinker and speaker on basic income. It’s not welfare; instead, it’s a dividend. Companies hide profits overseas. They lobby the government for their own benefit, not yours. And the money they save isn’t invested in employees, not at all. Laurie explains how the basic income is needed, and why it needed now more than ever. People need to get fairly paid for their work, and that will only happen with wage transparency, both with employees and employers. Laurie challenges you to ask YOUR potential employers a series of questions that, while they might make them uncomfortable, you need to, and have a RIGHT to know. Jason Lauritsen was up next as a guest, and he and Laurie delved into what you can do to get clear on your goal for your work life. Sure, he hates work. But he doesn’t hate working. They talked about his evolution from cubicle to entrepreneurship and doing it the safer way. It all began with learning. Laurie shares another of her insights to work: we fix work by deprioritizing it in our lives. Hard to do? Of course it is! We need to pay our bills. But even when you’re paying your bills, you can still separate your identity from your job title, and Laure tells you how to do it. She also dares you to only give 80% at work. Guest #4 was Amanda Hite, another of Laurie’s friends. Amanda has had an interesting life, and at one point, she had a boss who encouraged her to stay in the closet to advance her career. Really. Now that Amanda is a successful CEO, she wants people to be their whole selves at work, and she campaigns for employees to be heard and honored, even if it makes management a little more challenging. You need to drop the mask you’re wearing on an everyday basis. It’s not doing you any good to pretend to be someone else, to try to fulfill a role that isn’t you. You can’t live two lives. Laurie believes that we can fix work by having a harmonized personality that reflects your passion, your sense of purpose, and our core values. There’s only one you. So be you. Tim Sackett was the next guest, and he is an expert on recruiters. Yes – the Jerry McGuire type of recruiter who fights to put the best talent in the best jobs. Except they aren’t usually like that. Some – or most – are shady paper-pushers who are only in it for the money. It doesn’t have to be that way, but since you can’t change the recruiters, you can be your OWN talent agent. Laurie explains how. Laurie had a careers reporter from Business Insider as her most recent guest. Áine Cain is the type of woman who breaks the barriers and smashes stereotypes for the next generation of workers in offices. From #MeToo to robot workers, Áine has an exciting breadth of knowledge from her role in Business Insider. She also thinks you should smash your own pseudo-science around generational thinking. Laurie shares what you SHOULD be thinking about instead. Are you interested in a ‘Let’s Fix Work’ community, where you can get freebies, early access to the podcast, interact with Laurie and guests? Let's Fix Work

With all the wisdom out there about creating a great culture at work, you might think companies would have it well in hand by now. Unless you actually work in one of those companies. Creating a great culture at work isn’t as easy as it sounds. Sometimes it’s up to you to be the change you want to see. This week's guest Amanda Hite explains how to be the change at work. One of the best things companies can do is to treat their employees like humans who have lives, families, responsibilities, and interests. At the same time, knowing this can also open people up to other difficulties. Amanda shares the story of being offered a promotion as long as she promised NOT to talk about her LGBT lifestyle. When you look at different companies across the globe in terms of culture problems, you see themes emerge. Amanda shares some of these themes, the most prevalent being the generational gaps and how quickly the world is changing. The old regimes are threatened by the highly intelligent younger generation stepping in. Like it or not, we’re all embroiled in politics. It affects the experience we have at work, so Amanda shares a view you might not expect: what’s going RIGHT for work in regards to politics in America. In a world where information can go worldwide in a matter of minutes, issues in the workplace are brought to light and must be addressed by companies. Changes are made to culture because of it. Have you heard the term ‘weaponization of social media?’ As troubling as the reality of it is, it’s a fascinating concept. Laurie and Amanda talk about how the promise behind platforms like Twitter has changed into damage control, and how the younger generations will need to lead the charge to turn it around. In its current state, poverty is down. Life expectancy is up. Seems great, and it is. But trust is at an all-time low. From trust within organizations to trust between organizations and the public, Laurie and Amanda talk about where trust is emerging and how to foster it. So what happens when your workplace isn’t an actual workplace? If you’re in the freelance, gig economy, you don’t have an HR department. So what change can you actually be? Amanda believes that there are already innovations happening that are making it better. She shares some of her favorites. If you want to fix work, you need to start by fixing yourself. It’s a bold declaration that Laurie makes, and Amanda shares her own thoughts on how to fix work. She also shares how SHE’S fixing her own company and the experience her employees have. What would happen if an entire industry banded together to solve a problem? According to the two leaders on this episode of Add Passion and Stir, the industry would completely solve that problem. John Miller, CEO of Denny’s and Amanda Hite, Co-founder and CEO of Be The Change Revolutions think that the restaurant industry can end child hunger in America. Hite describes the industry as “massive, powerful and influential.” “We’re the industry that feeds people for a living,” says Miller. “Shouldn’t we be involved in being the solution to ending child hunger in America. If not us, then who?” Podcast hosts Share Our Strength founders Billy and Debbie Shore agree. “We can’t wait for the tipping point; we have to force it,” Debbie believes. Both guests are heavily involved with Dine Out for No Kid Hungry, a restaurant-led campaign that raises funds for No Kid Hungry’s work on getting more kids access to school breakfasts, school lunches and summer meals. Denny’s has been a participant for many years, raising over $4M for hungry kids. “The infrastructure of Dine Out makes it easy,” says Miller. “You see the need, you see the kids, you see the difference you’re making.” Hite, who created a social media company because she was impressed by the internet’s ability to bring communities together and ignite for change, sees the power of all the participating restaurants’ networks and fan bases coming together. “You’ll see 200M social media impressions on Dine Out,” she reports. “The Dine Out map broke!” When Billy Shore asks Miller and Hite about the role of partisan politics in fighting child hunger, they are adamant that politics should play no role. Miller believes we can make the case with “stubborn facts” to get people with different political believes working side by side. “These are our children, the next generation of children. They are struggling. They need their voices heard. And they don’t have a chance unless [we] feed them…,” he says. “Those are the facts, so we just have to come together and solve it.” Listen to see how the restaurant industry and others can make kids’ voices heard.
