Louis Virtel is joined by film critic Alonso Duralde to chat queer cinema and Duralde's book Hollywood Pride: A Celebration OF LGBTQ+ Representation and Perseverance in Film. Then the two get into Toy Story 5 and how the franchise has held up over 30 years. Plus, Australian actor Murray Bartlett swings by to talk about his new movie The Death of Robin Hood.
We already reviewed the big movie of the week -- that would be "Toy Story 5" -- so we wanted to tell you about a couple of cool, new indies on this Friday edition of Breakfast All Day: THE DEATH OF ROBIN HOOD. Hugh Jackman stars in this darkly violent version of the Robin Hood legend. Specifically, he wants no part of it, and would rather live out his final days in peace. Michael Sarnoski's film is beautiful but brutal. Co-starring Jodie Comer, Bill Skarsgård and Murray Bartlett. In theaters. LEVITICUS. Two young men (Joe Bird and Stacy Clausen) fall in love in a decaying Australian mill town. Religious leaders force them into a conversion therapy that makes them fear an enigmatic, threatening version of each other. Writer-director Adrian Chiarella executes this inspired horror concept extremely well in his feature filmmaking debut. In theaters. MOVIE NEWS LIVE! This went extra long because there was so much to talk about, including the "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" trailer, Amazon dropping Luca Guadagnino's Sam Altman movie, Fox buying Roku, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" at Sphere Las Vegas, and Ben Stiller's New York Knicks documentary. Robin Hood has been a lot of things over the centuries: noble thief, romantic outlaw, swashbuckling folk hero, animated fox, Kevin Costner with an accent that wanders wherever it pleases. But in Michael Sarnoski's hands, the myth becomes something darker, sadder, and more spiritually eviscerated. His new film, “The Death of Robin Hood,” is less interested in the legend as a heroic brand than in the man who might be trapped beneath its curse.Written and directed by Sarnoski, “The Death of Robin Hood” stars Hugh Jackman as an aging, haunted Robin Hood, a man grappling with a life of violence after a battle leaves him gravely injured. In the care of a mysterious Prioress played by Jodie Comer, he's offered something that might look like salvation, if he can survive long enough to accept it. The film also stars Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe, and arrives in theaters June 19 via A24.READ MORE: ‘Obsession': Curry Barker On His Twisted Wish-Fulfillment Horror Breakout, Inde Navarrette's Wild Performance, ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre,' & More [The Discourse Podcast]Sarnoski joined The Playlist's The Discourse podcast to talk about stripping away centuries of heroic varnish, finding the emotional soul of Robin Hood, reuniting with cinematographer Pat Scola, and writing the upcoming “Death Stranding” movie. And early in the conversation, he acknowledged a thread that has become increasingly clear across his work, from “Pig” to “A Quiet Place: Day One” to “The Death of Robin Hood”: these are stories about people who, in some way, already feel dead before the movie begins.
"The Death Of Robin Hood" is an American thriller film starring Hugh Jackman as Robin Hood in a dark adaptation of the 17th-century ballad "Robin Hood's Death." It is written and directed by Michael Sarnoski and also stars Jodie Comer, Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe. The film received generally positive reviews from critics for its grim atmosphere, craftsmanship, and Hugh Jackman's powerful performance. Sarnoski was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which will be released in theaters on June 19th from A24. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Andrew Mercado and James Manning review three new TV series this episode: Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed (AppleTV, 10 episodes)Paula (Tatiana Maslany) is a magazine fact-checker in the midst of a messy divorce from her ex-husband Karl which centres around the custody arrangements of their daughter Hazel. She begins paying Trevor, a webcam boy, for his time, during which she vents about her life and enjoys sexual experiences with him. One night, during one of their sessions, Paula witnesses Trevor being brutally attacked in his home. Reporting it to the Police, Detective Sofia Gonzalez believes it to be a scam. Co-starring are Murray Bartlett and Dolly De Leon. The Boroughs (Netflix, 8 episodes)The Boroughs is a Netflix sci-fi series executive-produced by the Duffer Brothers. It follows a quirky, resilient crew of retirees in a seemingly idyllic retirement community. The story kicks off in a picturesque retirement community, where a grieving newcomer experiences a bizarre and monstrous encounter. Super cast including Alfred Molina, Geena Davis and Bill Pullman. Kylie (Netflix, 3 episodes)Believe the hype, this really is an unfiltered look at the singer life including the major hits and plenty of revealing insights about and from her family and lovers. It doesn’t cover everything which would be a huge undertaking beyond the scope of this doco. There aren’t a lot of interviews but the director has secured the best with contributions from Pete Waterman, Jason Donovan, Nick Cave and sister Dannii – in addition to several sessions with Kylie on the couch. Plus: Andrew also talks about a new Crawford Productions YouTube channel which is home to some classic Australian TV series. James sounds a bit excited about watching Keeley Hawes playing a nun in the forthcoming series Falling.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Filmmakers at the 27th Provincetown International Film Festival (PIFF) talk with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ in the first part this two-part audio montage series. First we talked with Emmy-winning actor Murray Bartlett and star of “The White Lotus” who was recipient of this year's Excellence in Acting Award. Bartlett talks about being honored and staring in the PIFF feature film “Ponyboi” directed by Esteban Arango with screenplay by River Gallo based upon Gallo's short film. It also stars Gallo, Dylan O'Brien, Victoria Pedretti and Indya Moore. Murray known for his expansive work in HBO's “The Last of Us”, “Looking” and Hulu's “Welcome to Chippendales” also gave us his spin on our LGBTQ issues. Then we chatted with director Megan Rossman whose short film “We'll Carry On Alright” was selected as Best Documentary Short at this year's PIFF. Megan talks about how her film focuses on the friendship between Mabel Hampton an African American lesbian activist and Joan Nestle a white Jewish lesbian professor who is 40 years her junior. Ms. Hampton cared for Joan as a child and roles reversed when Joan cared for Ms. Hampton at the end of her life. Rossman talks about her inspiration for making this film and her spin on our current LGBTQ issues. Next we talked to director Carmen Emmi about his film “Plainclothes” that won the PIFF Audience Award / Best Narrative Feature. Carmen shared experiences about making the film set in 1990s New York and inspired by true events about a working-class undercover officer whose job was to entrap and apprehend gay men only to find himself drawn to one of his targets. We talked to Emmi about what he would like to accomplish with his career and his spin on our current civil rights issues. We concluded the first part of our two-part series with directors Jackie Reeves and Lauren Wolk who talk about their film “The Art of Survival (Unafraid)”. The film is a collection of five short animated films that explore what it means to persist in an increasingly precarious world. Each film fuses animation, poetry and music to confront themes of identity, resilience, and resistance. Raw and unfiltered these pieces reflect the struggle to remain creative, truthful and whole while facing personal and societal pressures. NOTA EDC: 3 estrellas Min 31.

It's a Pi Day miracle: We recorded these reviews in the same place at the same time for the first time in a long time. Five years, to be exact. And it was so nice to be together again at Alonso's apartment on this rainy day in LA. We begin with "The Electric State," an empty, ugly, $320 million action extravaganza from longtime MCU directors Anthony and Joe Russo. It's a retro-futuristic, post-apocalyptic story set in the '90s, after humans and robots have gone to war. The ridiculous cast includes Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Stanley Tucci, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Ke Huy Quan and Woody Harrelson as Mr. Peanut. Yes, you read that right. Streaming now on Netflix. We were also disappointed with "Opus," about a legendary pop star who invites a group of journalists to his remote retreat to listen to his first album in three decades. It's an A24 horror movie, and it feels awfully familiar. It also features an impressive cast including Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich, Murray Bartlett, Juliette Lewis and Amber Midthunder. In theaters now. And over at our Patreon, we recap the latest episode of "Daredevil: Born Again" on Disney+. Thanks for sharing some of your time with us -- we'll try to do this in person again soon! Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes Last Wednesday morning, Marvel Television treated fans to the long awaited first official teaser trailer for Daredevil: Born Again. The trailer was met with universal praise for its dark tone and brutal depictions of violence, elements that it shares with the beloved Netflix series. The nine-episode first season premieres March 4 on Disney Plus. In some Captain America news, it was confirmed that Brave New World will have a total runtime of one hour and 58 minutes, which ties it with Ant-Man & The Wasp as the seventh shortest MCU flick to date. It will also be the first Captain America film under two hours long. It's brand new news today, Ryan Gosling is in negotiations to star in Shawn Levy's future Star Wars film. Levy's film has been in development with Lucasfilm since 2022, and getting Gosling seems like it could be a major step in getting the film truly off the ground and into the galaxy far, far away. Last we knew, the film was not to be set within the Skywalker saga The use of AI has been a frequent hot topic for Hollywood in recent years, reaching a seeming fever pitch during the 2023 WGA and SAG AFTRA strikes as a major point of negotiation. While the dust seemed to have settled a bit with the resolution of those strikes, new controversies plaguing high profile films and filmmakers have brought the discussion back to the forefront. First, Taxi Driver writer and First Reformed director, Paul Schrader, opined, in a since much lambasted Facebook post, the benefits of using a platform like ChatGPT for film ideas, in contrast to waiting the months it can take writers to ideate. Elsewhere, awards season favorite and Oscar hopeful, The Brutalist, has come under fire after an editor revealed generative A.I. was used to enhance the authenticity of the lead performers Hungarian accents. Emily Beecham and David Krumholtz have signed on to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, portraying the parents of Kara Zor-El. Production on the DC Studios film commenced last week. Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for “Until Dawn,” the live-action adaptation of the popular 2015 PlayStation horror game. The film is currently set to be released on April 25th. Dylan and Connor are joined by Andrew Keenan-Bolger (Scarlett Dreams, Newsies). You've asked for years and here he is: AKB on DRAMA, girls, gays, and theys! And he's doing well… ish.
