Ben finds Susan at the Shop struggling under a mountain of deliveries and helps her clear some space for customers. The deliveries are part of Susan's initiative to expand the Shop's range of products, but it looks like it'll be a struggle to put new shelves up and fit everything in before Joy's next shift on Saturday. Then Joy turns up, dismayed to find the stock room full and boxes all over the place. Susan tries to sell Akram some screws and is delighted she can offer him a mallet, before he starts revelling in the cornucopia of hardware items Susan has ordered. Susan's convinced everything's going to be fine now. When Justin tells Lilian he's changed his mind about going on a months-long cruise she replies that it's too late, she's committed to staying in Ambridge, looking out for Alice, Tony, the Stables and The Bull. Lilian wonders why Justin's made a U-turn. He can't exactly say why, but the meeting with Arthur has prompted thoughts about looking after one another as they get older. Justin fancies doing some good in the world, taking Arthur as his example. They go to see Kirsty at the Rewilding, wanting to talk about the art installation Peggy's donation will be funding. They're looking for something to attract more visitors, but not too many. While visiting the pond Lilian recalls a childhood game and pushes Justin in. Luckily he sees the funny side and ends up laughing with Lilian and Kirsty, imagining Peggy looking down and laughing too.

At the Tearoom, before the pancake eating competition starts, Zainab tells relieved Akram she was never going to take a job at The Bull. Brad meanwhile isn't feeling great, following his starvation diet. Natasha introduces Zainab and Brad in boxing-match style with ridiculous nicknames, but then Brad collapses to the floor. Later, while embarrassed Brad recovers, Natasha desperately tries to find a replacement, but it doesn't look promising. Before setting off in the Riley Jazzer confesses how anxious he is about going to this posh restaurant. Tracy susses he's more upset about not going to the pancake event, but she's not changing her mind. However, Tracy then gets a call telling her what's happened to Brad. By the time Tracy and Jazzer reach The Tearoom people have started drifting away. Tracy insists on taking Brad off to feed him up – she's already cancelled the meal with Susan and Neil. Seeing Natasha's desperation Jazzer offers to take Brad's place, but quickly changes his mind when he sees Tracy's face. With a load of uneaten pancakes left on her hands Natasha has no choice but to offer them free to all comers.Back at Ambridge Hall Akram cajoles Zainab into making up with Azra, instead of fighting all the time. Zainab feels bad about the books and photos that were ruined by the sewage, but Adil has found replacements for some of the photographs at least, which Akram has brought back with him. When asked about moving back to Solihull Zainab admits she'd like to give Ambridge a try for a little longer yet.

At No.6 The Green Jazzer moans to Brad about the posh dinner Tracy's making him go to with Susan and Neil. But Brad has other things on his mind, including the pancake eating competition. Jazzer would far rather go to that, but Tracy refuses to change their dinner date to let him do both. Brad then tells jealous Jazzer he'll fast before the competition to make sure he beats Zainab. The prize is as good as his.Akram fills Azra in on how Adil is doing in Pakistan, then outlines some ideas to get his business up and running. They share happy memories of biking together, before Azra shocks him with news about Zainab wanting to work in a pub. Later, they consider the idea of moving back to Solihull, amongst old friends. Azra confesses that, despite the sewage spill, they feel settled in Ambridge. She thinks Akram might grow to like it there too. Despite Emma's best efforts the Tearoom has been dead all day. Both Pat and Emma hope Natasha's punt on getting customers back with the pancake competition works. Pat's frustrated that not many people have signed her petition about the sewage overspill. Emma suggests drumming up a bigger response with a media blitz. Later, Emma shows Pat the work she's been doing online to publicise the petition, using photos of damage at Bridge Farm and adding links to the Borsetshire Clean Water Action Group. Even better, Emma then gets an invite for an interview on Radio Borsetshire – at last, an opportunity for their voices to be heard!

Abia Akram, a globally recognized advocate for women with disabilities and a pioneer in disability rights activism is guest in episode 2 of this special series taking place in the backdrop of the UNGA, the Summit of the Future and Climate Week taking place in NYC in September 2024. Drawing from her personal experience with physical disability, Abia shares her journey in the Disability Movement, which began in 1997. Throughout the episode, she discusses her relentless advocacy at both local and international levels, including lobbying with UN representatives and parliamentarians to ensure that the voices of youth, espcially young women, with disabilities are heard in global forums. Highlights of the episode include Abia's answer to a question of previous guest Carrick of WRI. She is such an inspiration. Her insights offer a deep understanding of how to build advocacy strategies that empower women with disabilities and promote inclusive development on a global scale.
Wasim Akram possessed an extraordinary talent for swing bowling, which often posed significant challenges for opening batsmen in both Test and One Day International cricket formats. His ability to manipulate the ball's movement in the air and off the pitch made him a formidable opponent, capable of unsettling even the most skilled players at the crease.

When a Moroccan scholar becomes a maven of innovation, we're compelled to share his story. Akram Kellis, known affectionately as AK, joins us to recount his transformative journey from Casablanca's bright student to the Chief Technology Officer at MHT Technologies. Alongside him, I weave my narrative, tracing the steps from adapting engineering expertise in a new country to birthing entrepreneurial ventures that predate today's tech norms. Our conversation is a testament to the pursuit of excellence and the embodiment of mentorship, where AK not only shares his professional milestones but also unravels the ethos of cultivating a collaborative culture. From the patina of patents to the artistry of storytelling, we trade experiences that underscore the gravity of simplicity in conveying complex ideas. I reflect on steering through the U.S. engineering landscape, which laid the groundwork for ventures like an early ride-sharing concept, and we dive into the consequential world of intellectual property. The heart of our dialogue beats to the rhythm of recognizing potential, with mentorship cast as the key to unlocking the treasure troves within us. There's a shared belief in the transformative power of guidance, and how it fosters both personal and professional evolution.Gazing into the horizon, we explore the burgeoning realm of smart buildings, where IoT is more than a buzzword; it's the cornerstone of future habitats. AK brings to light how sensor networks and Power over Ethernet are crafting the self-regulating edifices of tomorrow. We muse on the indispensability of data for AI, the imperative of open standards for scalability, and how cultural diversity isn't just a social asset but a crucible for innovation. With AK's insights, we paint a picture of a world where technology is as diverse and adaptive as the human experience itself.Support the showKnowledge is power! Akram's rich career includes performing at the opening ceremony of the London Olympics, collaborating with artists Anish Kapoor and Antony Gormley, and choreographing tours and videos for the likes of Kylie Minogue and Florence + the Machine. He was awarded an MBE for services to dance in 2005. He kindly invited us to his home last summer and we recorded this conversation in a shady spot in the garden. Akram is of Bangladeshi descent and he grew up above his parents' restaurant in south-west London. He was bullied at school and harassed by the National Front outside of it, so he's always had a conflicted view of his community. As a child, he was introverted to the point of being mute, and movement quickly became his primary form of expression. He tells me how he danced so enthusiastically at home that the lights in the restaurant below would start shaking, putting the customers off their food. The word ‘home' has come to mean many things for Akram: it's the small studio in the garden where he practises dance for four hours every morning, it's the stage on which he performs, and it's also his own body. As is the case for so many true artists, there's a lot of conflicting emotion inside him. He talks particularly poignantly about his relationship with his late father, who always struggled to demonstrate his love. Akram's story has really stayed with me. Being able to talk to people on this podcast is a great privilege, and conversations like this one really remind me of that. For more: Visit The Modern House website to see images of the spaces discussed in this episodeCheck out the latest from the Akram Khan CompanyProduction: Hannah PhillipsEditing and mixing: Oscar CrawfordGraphic Design: Tom YoungMusic: FatherThis episode was sponsored by Vitsoe Hosted on Acast. Akram was just 6-years-old when he came to Lebanon and started hearing about Jesus. At 16-years-old he accepted Christ as his personal Savior. Now he is 19-years-old and is serving with Heart for Lebanon in our Hope on Wheels children's ministry. Akram has a heart to help children know Christ at an early age so that they can learn how to overcome challenges based on Truth. Because his parents were open to learning about Jesus and let him go to Sunday School classes, he has God's word planted deep in his heart. This is what we want for all of the children we serve. Listen to a little bit of Akram's story and if you want to be involved in changing the world for a child with the Gospel, visit heartforlebanon.org/ye

Firms and entrepreneurs were key drivers of the globalisation of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This thesis investigates commodity networks, foreign banking and business networks, as three manifestations of the first global economy, in Egypt. The country was integrated into the world economy by exporting cotton, importing foreign capital, and hosting a large foreign community. The thesis shows that the Egyptian cotton network was sophisticated as market participants were spatially dispersed. The network was instrumentally coordinated by foreign banks that provided the crucial functions of intermediating the flows of cotton, finance, and information. Departing from the literature that portrays foreign banks in developing countries as manifestations of imperialism and exploitation of host countries, the thesis demonstrates that the history of these banks in Egypt does not conform to this rhetoric. The case of the Ionian Bank reveals that foreign banks in Egypt were businesses that sought profits and faced many risks and challenges. Some risks were uncontrollable and negatively affected banks' performance, which was shaped by trade-off between opportunity and risk appetite. The analysis of the interlocking directorates of the Egyptian corporate and elite networks demonstrates that these networks, predominantly controlled by local foreigners, served as a basis for coordinating and maintaining collective interests. The structure of the elite network presumably fostered entrepreneurial activities that were funded by foreign capital. The analysis documents the gradual rise of indigenous entrepreneurs at the expense of local foreigners. The study demonstrates how Egypt's integration into the first modern globalisation was facilitated by foreign firms and entrepreneurs. It points out the need to revise the historiography of foreign capital and foreigners in Egypt during this period. In addition, the thesis contributes to the limited business history scholarship on the Middle East and furthers our understanding of the complex nature of globalisation. "Cotton, Finance and Business Networks in a Globalised World: The Case of Egypt During the First half of the Twentieth Century" (2019) was the winner fo the Coleman Prize in 2020.
