On this episode of the podcast I got to talk about one of my favorite subjects: LOVE. As much as I enjoy giving advice and sharing my opinion, I wanted to talk about relationships with two people who are in one. Ariel Jackson is a renaissance woman dabbling in makeup, modeling, art and entrepreneurship. She is the creator behind @urbanrenaccess where she makes beautiful earrings, waistbeads and other accessories. Her artistry spans singing, dancing and painting and you can see her in action on her personal page @1mermaidbabe Patrick Mitchell played basketball for most of his life even going semi-pro. But like Ariel he is an artist at heart not to mention a father and visionary. Together with his partner Ariel they formed @urbanrenalliance to showcase their art and provide a platform for other artists to do the same. On this episode the two share their love story, the ups and downs and offer some advice for how to maintain a healthy relationship with one's self while also being a competent and loving partner. Want to expand your creativity? Well they also give us tips on being disciplined in your craft, accepting feedback on your work and asking for help when necessary. Grab a pen and pad to take notes or a bag to catch all the gems they are dropping.
I'm so happy that I interviewed Ariel Jackson, she is one of a kind and it's been awhile since we used to work together. Here she is giving some really sound advice and I can't wait for you to listen! www.thearieljackson.com If you need to ask any questions! www.veronicabarrera.com
Happy New Years everyone! I wish you had time for peace and reflection as we head into 2019. For this coming year, I am excited to release and share a whole batch of new interviews with you. Just as a reminder, Ariel Jackson, who I interviewed in the previous episode, has her show opening this week at Sculpture Center on Long Island City. So please go and see her show if you are in or around New York City. Moving on to today’s episode, I thought about what to release as the first episode to mark 2019 and I felt it would be a good idea to look back, as in all the way back, to the first interview I ever conducted for this podcast in February of 2018. As I edited the audio, I could hear myself still figuring out how I wanted my podcast to function and sound as I tentatively talked to my guest. At this point, I had not even made the website yet or figured out what to call my podcast. With all that aside, my first guest ever is Umar Rashid, a Los Angeles-based artist, storyteller, history buff, musician, and poet. Umar was born in 1976 in Chicago and he earned a BA at Southern Illinois University in the year 2000. Umar’s work focuses on the colonial history of the Frenglish Empire—a fictionalized empire of his creation that combines France and England. His portraits, drawings, flags, maps, battle scenes, and other artifacts continue the long history of Frengland, a project Umar has been working on since 2006. Our talk hits many different topics, ranging from why it can be important to learn about white history to philosophical questions about power and corruption. The episode feels very raw to me compared to my later episodes, so I hope you enjoy this. Skyping in from her studio at the University of Texas at Austin, artist Ariel Jackson is my guest this week. She produces sculpture, video, performance, and installation works that are research-driven critiques of United States history and culture. On this week’s episode, we talked about science fiction and Afrofuturism, games, intuition and color, complications in comedy and her “Dave Chappelle” moment, accessing and synthesizing information versus emotion, her recent studio projects that engage the politics of education and the history of African American farming, intersectionality, a 2017 artist residency she did in Senegal, cooking, and her new obsession with Topo Chico since relocating to Austin.
