Andrew Conte serves as the founding director of the Center for Media Innovation at Point Park University.  He writes the Pittsburgh Public Editor column at NEXTpittsburgh. And he was an investigative reporter at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, where he won numerous national, state and local awards. Andrew has published several books, including Death of the Daily News, released in September, 2022, Breakaway, and The Color of Sundays, which explores the role of race in the National Football League mainly through how Bill Nunn, Jr. and the Pittsburgh Steelers identified undervalued players at historically black colleges. Netflix has optioned the book for a potential movie, and the Independent Book Publishers Association recognized The Color of Sundays with a Silver Benjamin Franklin Award. I've read The Color of Sundays and can tell you it's a thoroughly researched, fascinating deep dive into how African Americans have become indispensable, elite players in high-profile sports. For the record, Steve and Andy have known one another for many years as colleagues at Point Park University. If Andy hadn't put out a call in 2016 for professors who might like to use the Center for Media Innovation to launch a podcast, StoryBeat would not exist.

The City of McKeesport in southwestern Pennsylvania once had a population of more than fifty thousand people and a newspaper that dated back to the nineteenth century. Technology has caused massive disruption to American journalism, throwing thousands of reporters out of work, closing newsrooms, and leaving vast areas with few traditional news sources—including McKeesport. With the loss of their local paper in 2015, residents now struggle to make sense of what goes on in their community and to separate facts from gossip—often driven by social media. The changes taking place in this one Pennsylvania community are being repeated across the United States as hundreds of local newspapers close, creating news deserts and leaving citizens with little access to reliable local journalism. The obituary for local news, however, does not have to read all bad: Even in the bleakest places, citizens are discovering what happens in their communities and becoming gatekeepers to information for the people around them. In McKeesport, citizens are attempting to make sense of the news on their own, for better and worse. This experiment not only offers clues about what happens after a local newspaper dies, but also provides guidance to the way forward. Andrew Conte founded the Center for Media Innovation at Point Park University in Pittsburgh, which serves as a laboratory for the present and future of local journalism. He previously worked as an investigative journalist, and he has authored several nonfiction books.

Andrew Conte, founding director of the Center for Media Innovation at Point Park University, has been receiving wide industry acclaim for his latest book “Death of the Daily News,” which tells the story of how residents in one Pennsylvania community have identified and sorted local news and information since their local newspaper stopped publishing after 131 years. The book also addresses how “citizen gatekeepers” run a new local newspaper and an online news outlet, post to social media sites and seek other platforms for sharing information. “The massive changes that have caused so much disruption and pain for our industry also are creating opportunities for the future of local journalism,” Conte stated. “While the book focuses on a motif of ‘death,' the narrative tells a story of rebirth that should give hope for all of us who care about local news and the democratic institutions it supports.”  “The hardest part was probably getting people to trust me enough to talk about what was going on in a community where people are wary of outsiders,” says Conte. “They want to know your intentions and why you are interested in their community before they start talking to you and opening up. And so that took a long time.” In this 160th episode of “E&P Reports,” we interview veteran reporter-turned-educator Andrew Conte, who founded the Center for Media Innovation at Point Park University in Pittsburgh. He is also the author of “Death of the Daily News,” his latest book, which takes an in-depth look, via local reporting, at what happens when one local community loses its newspaper of record and flounders to find other forms of local journalism.

What would it mean to lose a fixture in Pittsburgh news? It's a grim future we're getting a glimpse of as portions of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette newsroom, represented by the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh, walked out in the city's biggest newspaper strike since 1992. NEXTPittsburgh media columnist Andrew Conte joins us to talk about how this will affect the community — and working journalists — who depend on the outlet to “tell our stories from birth to death and everything in between.” City Paper did a great write-up about the labor strike, which more deeply considers the perspective of folks who are opting out of the strike: https://www.pghcitypaper.com/pittsburgh/post-gazette-reporters-leave-union-over-striking-disputes/Content?oid=22630472   Here's the PG's 30th anniversary story about the Pittsburgh Press strike in 1992: https://www.post-gazette.com/opinion/insight/2022/05/22/great-newspaper-strike-30-years-later-post-gazette-press/stories/202205220031 And if you're curious about all those references to Styx's "Renegade," check out our episode on the song's affect on the Steelers here: https://pod.link/citycastpittsburgh/episode/ce46373ef70afbba6a6d53a4755f75ee Our newsletter is fresh daily at 6 a.m. Sign up here. FULL TRANSCRIPT AND IMAGE OF MCGILL HERE On today's episode we're talking about a tough problem. And, trigger warning, it contains general information about sexual assault by and against people with intellectual disabilities. While people with intellectual disabilities are seven times more likely to be sexually assaulted as the general population, at times they commit sexual crimes as well. So we're talking with a passionate and experienced Pittsburgh social worker who's helping people learn how to avoid committing sex crimes, how to avoid being victimized themselves, and how to thrive in their relationships. It's a job few others are doing. This season of A Valid Podcast we're looking at how to support people with intellectual disabilities to live with greater safety and inclusion in the community. Obviously when people commit crimes, it's a strike against social inclusion. The most significant factor for someone with an intellectual disability to commit such a crime is if they themselves were previously abused. from the U.S. Justice Department found that nearly a quarter of all prisoners–not just those committing sex offenses–may have intellectual, cognitive or learning disabilities. This figure represents the number of prisoners who said they took special education classes. A Valid Podcast comes to you from the All-Abilities Media Project. December 19, 2016 "The Howitzer and Buzz-saw Show" on Pittsburgh Podcast Network | Episode #011 Embracing hate is often important to success. Few have done this as well as Pittsburgh media extraordinaire Rob Rossi. George "the Howitzer" Gerbo and Mike "the Buzz-saw" Asti welcome Rossi to the first Howitzer and Buzz-saw Show recorded at the Point Park University Center for Media Innovation. Produced by Talent Network, inc. and Pittsburgh Podcast Network. This episode was recorded at Point Park University's Center for Media Innovation. Special Thanks to Chelsea Pompeani and Andrew Conte for coordinating the studio time and the partnership between Pittsburgh Podcast Network and the Center for Media Innovation. Episode Show Notes: While staying true to his heel persona, Rossi talks the drama with Andrew McCutchen, if the Pirates should trade the former National League MVP, and how a potential McCutchen trade can be compared to other trades of Pittsburgh star athletes over the years. Mike attempts to explain his hatred for the often mediocre and recently fired Jeff Fisher. Are the Steelers Super Bowl favorites? Has Le'Veon Bell emerged as an MVP candidate? Rossi even tries to give Mike some advice on how to elevate his own stature as a heel. George then dreams of a possibility to heel turn himself, only to be ruined by realizing it's unlikely Mike will ever not garner hate.
