All That's Jazz

Pittsburgh has a strong connection to the world of jazz; in fact, you might say it is sacred ground for this music genre. Many of the legends of jazz - like Billy Eckstine, Billy Taylor, Ray Brown, George Benson, Stanley Turrentine, Mary Lou Williams, Ahmad Jamal, Art Blakey and dozens more - are from this Pennsylvania “burg.”   In this episode, we talk with co-founder and executive producer of MCG Jazz, Marty Ashby, about how MCG Jazz grew out of the organization founded in the 1960's by Bill Strickland as Manchester Craftsman Guild. What started as Strickland's dream to serve and give back to the community, has since grown into a powerhouse program.  As a Craftsman Guild, MCG initially provided a space to develop ceramics, photography and digital design education for urban youth. In the late 80's, Strickland joined forces with jazz guitarist Ashby. Together as co-founders, they started MCG Jazz, where Ashby also continues to grow this legacy program as its executive producer.  Our conversation begins with Marty Ashby telling me about the backstory to this incredible organization, its history, present projects and their vision for the future of keeping Jazz alive for generations to come

S5 EP17 What's up world, Join host Brandon Avery in an inspiring conversation with the multifaceted individual, Bill Strickland. In this episode, Bill, who wears many hats as an editorial director, writer, cyclist, and father, delves into his life's journey, transcending from small talk about weather to profound discussions that resonate deeply. From navigating a traumatic childhood, a prolonged academic pursuit spanning nine years, grappling with homelessness by sleeping in his car, to his global travels and the apprehensions of fatherhood, Bill shares his intimate experiences. He discusses how these trials culminated in his highly acclaimed book, "10 Points," which not only serves as a testament to his resilience but also offers insights into overcoming adversity and pursuing one's dreams. Hailing from Gary, Indiana, Bill's narrative unfolds from humble beginnings, where he found solace in crafting stories without knowing the trajectory of his future. Notably, in the sixth grade, he authored "The Human Beans,” a book co-created with his mother who contributed illustrations, marking the initial steps of his creative journey. Concluding with this powerful takeaway: This is a conversation you don't want to miss—a compelling journey through trials, triumphs, and the unwavering resilience of the human spirit. Back in the mid-1960s Bill Strickland was a directionless public school student in Pittsburgh who didn't really see a path for success for him or his fellow lower class, minority student friends. Then, one day he walked past a classroom and saw a teacher sitting at a pottery wheel — and that moment, and how he responded to it, changed his life. And since then has changed the lives of countless young people not only in Pittsburgh, but around the country and beyond. Manchester Bidwell Corporation (MBC) takes seemingly disparate elements — adult career training, youth arts education, jazz presentation and botanical sales (they grow orchids) — and combines them into a program with a proven record of positively changing the lives of underserved populations. Bill has helped start an additional 13 centers, including five in Pennsylvania, 6 in other US states, 1 in Puerto Rico, and 1 in Israel.

Bill and Sam retired to the city of Funchal on Madeira in 2021 without ever having stepped foot on the island. Back in the 1960s, Bill Strickland was a listless teenager but life as he knew it was about to change forever. One afternoon, while skipping class, something caught his eye - the door to one of the art rooms was ajar and he could hear the whirring of a potters wheel. Stopping a moment to take a look, Bill beheld a sight that would change the course of his life. At the wheel was a ceramics teacher, Mr Frank Ross, spinning a lump of clay into a beautiful bowl. He was witnessing a profound metaphor - he could make his life into something beautiful as Mr Ross made bowls from clay. Mr Ross had lit a fuse within Bill. He went onto university and eventually set up the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, an afterschool arts programme in his neighbourhood of North Side, Pittsburgh. The programme is designed to intercept the often difficult lives of teenagers in the area, to put them on a path toward a positive future with the help of inspirational teachers. And it works. Thousands of kids come through the programme each year and Bill's work has been recognised by the White House, among others. Matthew Syed explores how teachers have the power to transform the world, one student at a time. It's a big responsibility taken seriously by the likes of history teacher Shalina Patel. Shalina goes beyond the textbooks to engage her students. Professor Sarah-Jayne Blakemore explains why adolescence is such a formative time in terms of brain development and suggests we reconsider the way we talk about and teach teenagers. He shared two stories with a common thread about how something that was once an irritant became a gem, a pearl. The inquiry was to reflect on what irritants we may have, and what gem do they bring to us? How does empathy shift our perceptions? Bill Strickland is a fixture in the cycling industry. Over the decades he and his team have contributed to how we look at cycling at large including setting an example for promoting diversity within work and also amplifying the voices of people from all different backgrounds in his publications. This conversation gets pretty heavy when we spoke about his childhood and his relationship with his abusive father. But we also spoke about his relationship with Lance from the 90s all the way up to his confession of doing in 2013. This episode is incredible. You’re really going to enjoy this!

This is part of our Special Series on Malcolm X and Black Nationalism. In this series, we delve into the background of Malcolm X's action and thought in the context of Black Nationalism, correcting the fundamentally mistaken notion that Malcolm X was a civil rights leader. He certainly did not see himself in that way, and explicitly argued otherwise. This helps us place the Afro-American struggle in its dimensions beyond the current American nation-state, including the Black Atlantic, and beyond. Today, our guest is Jared Ball, co-editor of A Lie of Reinvention: Correcting Manning Marable's Malcolm X (Black Classic Press, 2012). A Lie of Reinvention is a response to Manning Marable’s biography of Malcolm X, A Life of Reinvention. Marable’s book was controversially acclaimed by some as his magnum opus. At the same time, it was denounced and debated by others as a worthless read full of conjecture, errors, and without any new factual content. In this collection of critical essays, editors Jared Ball and Todd Steven Burroughs lead a group of established and emerging Black scholars and activists who take a clear stance in this controversy: Marable’s biography is at best flawed and at worst a major setback in American history, African American studies, and scholarship on the life of Malcolm X. In the tradition of John Henrik Clarke’s classic anthology “William Styron’s Nat Turner: Ten Black Writers Respond,” this volume provides a striking critique of Marable’s text. In 1968, Clarke and his assembled writers felt it essential to respond to Styron’s fictionalized and ahistorical Nat Turner, the heroic leader of one of America’s most famous revolts against enslavement. In A Lie of Reinvention, the editors sense a different threat to an African American icon, Malcolm X. This time, the threat is presented as an authoritative biography. To counter the threat, Ball and Burroughs respond with a barbed collection of commentaries of Marable’s text. The essays come from all quarters of the Black community. From behind prison walls, Mumia Abu-Jamal revises his prior public praise of Marable’s book with an essay written specifically for this volume. A. Peter Bailey, a veteran journalist who worked with Malcolm X’s Organization for Afro-American Unity, disputes how he is characterized in Marable’s book. Bill Strickland, who also knew Malcolm X, provides what he calls a “personal critique” of the biography. Younger scholars such as Kali Akuno, Kamau Franklin, Sundiata Keita Cha-Jua, Christopher M. Tinson, Eugene Puryear and Greg Thomas join veterans Rosmari Mealy, Raymond Winbush, Amiri Baraka and Karl Evanzz in pointing out historical problems and ideological misinterpretations in Marable’s work. Kirk Meighoo is a TV and podcast host, former university lecturer, author and former Senator in Trinidad and Tobago. He hosts his own podcast, Independent Thought & Freedom, where he interviews some of the most interesting people from around the world who are shaking up politics, economics, society and ideas. In this very special guest episode of Wisdom of Wyse Women Podcast, I have astrologer and teacher Kelsey Rose with me to talk about the extreme times we are finding ourselves in. She shares her own experience of awakening to her purpose and leaving a life of teaching in formalized education behind in order to pursue the life that is truly meant for her. She shares the cosmic + complex workings of the universe as processed and described through the practice of astrology, so we get a clearer sense of what is happening in our micro and macro worlds. She acknowledges that these are hard + dark times and we need light workers to bring us through, and help us by acting as doulas for change as we bring in a new world. We riff on the breakdown of systems + structures that we are witnessing and actively taking part of as the repressed ugliness of the collective culture and programming rises strongly to the surface to be purged. This is part of the Plutonian energy in interaction with Capricorn and Saturn as the planets reached conjunction back in January. Many years and happenings have been leading up to this time. We have reached the apocalypse, or ‘the lifting of the veil', which is the end of “time” as we know it. Ancient Greek has two words for time: chronos, which is chronological time that capitalism uses to keep us on the wheel and under its control; and chiros, which is the quality of time that encourages us to live in our natural rhythms and be in the free flow of our desires + talents to do things our own way. We discuss the possibility of the apocalypse as being the end of chronos, clearing the way for the beginning of chiros. She gives us a deep dive into the symbols and interpretations of astrology, pertaining to this current period of time in particular, and of its meaning and validation for our lives as individuals. We come full circle with her words of wisdom that “everything leads to the next thing, and you don't need to know exactly where you're going, to go.” Our conversation is a strong reminder that the human experience is complex and messy! And it's ok to let it be that way. We do not always need to have the answers. And we talk about resting and allowing as processes that encourage+ allow for more abundance of everything we actually want in our lives. Join us for this jam, it's powerful and strong and so very real when it comes to life as we have known it. Show Notes: Book she references is called “Making the Impossible” by Bill Strickland. Astrology teacher she mentions is Acyuta-bhava Dasa of Nightlight Astrology, astrology podcasts mentioned are Holds to Heavens with Sumner , and The Astrology Podcast with Chris Brennan. Today we are having a special episode in honor of our 2nd annual L3 One Day Conference that is coming up on Friday, March 13th, 2020. Today, you'll get to hear a talk from L3 One Day 2019 by my friend and mentor, Matt Keller, Pastor of Next Level Church in Ft. Myers Florida. He kicked off our first conference with a talk called, "The Leader that Succeeds today." It's incredible. I want you to hear it so you can get a preview of the kind of talks that will be at L3 One Day 2020. We have an incredible lineup of speakers for you this year at L3 One Day: we have Jeff Henderson, Author of the Book "For" who works at Northpoint Church for Andy Stanley and worked at Chik-fil-a corporate prior that. We have Laura Ellsworth who is the Partner in Charge of Global Community Service Initiatives at Jones Day and is one of the best speakers I've heard. Bill Strickland, Founder and Chairman of the Bidwell Training Center here in Pittsburgh, Greg Weimer, Partner of Confluence Financial, and more. I believe you are one idea and one connection away from changing your destiny and the destiny of your organization. Leaders get into the room! You have no idea what you miss when you're not in the room. I love what Gerald Brooks said about being in the room: "Leadership can be taught, but it has to be caught. When you're in a room with high-level leaders, you feel it. It's not the lesson you need, it's the life of a leader you need."I know for me, the life of the leaders I've been able to connect with has meant everything for my growth. Please join us! Bill Strickland has spent over half a century teaching kids and training adults. It started on the North Side of Pittsburgh, the neighborhood where he grew up and would name the organization he built: Manchester. In 1968, Bill was a student at the University of Pittsburgh when he founded the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild as an arts program for inner city youth. A few years later, he was building a career training center that, along with the arts program, became a model embraced by cities all over the country. Today, he has the Key to the City – Pittsburgh’s highest civilian award – and travels the world building new partnerships and centers.

Start your journey with E. E. Cummings who said, “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” Then invite Samuel Johnson to join your trek. He is the one who said, “There lurks, perhaps, in every human heart a desire of distinction, which inclines every man first to hope, and then to believe, that Nature has given him something peculiar to himself.” You should let Friedrich Nietzsche come along too, for he said, “At bottom every man knows well enough that he is a unique being, only once on this earth, and by no extraordinary chance will such a marvelously picturesque piece of diversity in unity as he is, ever be put together a second time.” Julius Charles Hare also has some advice qualifying him to serve as your traveling companion, “Be what you are. This is the first step toward becoming better than you are.” It was your fellow traveler, Samuel Johnson, who said, “Almost every man wastes part of his life in attempts to display qualities which he does not possess, and to gain applause which he cannot keep.” With that in mind, find room in your party for John Mason. You need his wisdom, “You were born an original. Don't die a copy.” “Rabbi Zusya said on the Day of Judgment that, God would ask him, not why he had not been Moses, but why he had not been Zusya.” (Walter Kaufmann) Just be sure you are not asked why you hadn't been you. … . . . . . According to Orson Scott Card, “This is how humans are. we question all our beliefs, except for the ones we really believe, and those we never think to question.” Wonder if this is true If so, there are things you believe just because you believe it and others that you believe simply because you've never given any thought to not believing. Add this to Felix Cohen's observation, “Generally the theories we believe we call facts, and the facts we disbelieve we call theories,” and you are left with a discouraging conclusion. Most of what you think is true and factual, most of what you really believe, is little more than one more theory, just another personal opinion. There is an important glitch here. Most everyone else also chooses belief over non-belief, subscribes to one more theory, another personal opinion. That then becomes their belief, the principle according to which they live. Of course, since you really believe, you are right and they are wrong. The way you choose to live is good and right, and the way they choose to live is wrong and unjust. Here is a suggestion that might lessen the tendency to discount everyone else's perspective. Pick one principle you use to govern your life. Assume you are wrong, that this cherished principle is invalid. How would that change your world, your perception of you and your actions? While you are contemplating this alternative reality, keep in mind most of the people in the world are certain that your valued principle, your most cherished belief is wrong. . . . . . “The bicycle, the bicycle surely, should always be the vehicle of novelists and poets.” Christopher Morley's point is certainly worth pondering, for as the famous Anon. observed, “It would not be at all strange if history came to the conclusion that the perfection of the bicycle was the greatest incident of the nineteenth century. It is as Iris Murdoch argued, “The bicycle is the most civilized conveyance known to man. Other forms of transport grow daily more nightmarish. Only the bicycle remains pure in heart.” “When man invented the bicycle he reached the peak of his attainments. Here was a machine of precision and balance for the convenience of man. And (unlike subsequent inventions for man's convenience) the more he used it, the fitter his body became. Here, for once, was a product of man's brain that was entirely beneficial to those who used it, and of no harm or irritation to others. Progress should have stopped when man invented the bicycle.” (Elizabeth West) Should you doubt, consider this from Bill Strickland,
