Potter Revisited Episode #22 | The Less Sexy Red Herring Aka Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 4 "At Flourish and Blotts" We are back from our short break with a long episode - so get a cup of tea and a snack! We love how at ease Harry is at The Burrow Explosions from the Twins' room are seen as "normal" - were they already starting Weasley's Wizards Wheezes?  We finally meet Ginny - we discuss Ginny's early crush on Harry and how timid her character seems compared to later in the series Gilderoy assigning his own books as textbook seems like a scam. Shay compares it to her Queens University days Percy wearing a "knitted tank top" - is it fashion? Hermione says she is busy with schoolwork - again we question what kind of work they can be doing outside of school if they can't do magic The Twins' note that Percy is acting strange. Shay declares Percy the new Red Herring of this book - but not as "Sexy as Snape" in her view Why did they think Harry taking Floo powder by himself on his very first time would be a good idea? Are they not able to send two smaller people together?  Harry of course almost runs into the Malfoys when lost in Knockturn Alley - we both feel for him and remember what it was like running into peers you would rather not see on Summer holidays Apparently Draco has spent the whole summer complaining about Harry, and even Lucius is sick of it  We meet Lucius Malfoy for the first time, we discuss how he comes across and how it shows how Draco is the way he is We see a lot of objects in Borgin and Burkes that play big parts later, particularly in HBP: The Vanishing Cabinet, The Cursed Necklace and The Hand of Glory  Malfoy is selling dark objects to avoid scandal from Ministry raids - which includes a lot of poisons. What are the Malfoy's doing?  Harry is rescued by Hagrid, but why was he in Knockturn Alley?  Shay remembers why she loves Fred so much  Hermione's parents are introduced, but they do not speak, or do much of anything. Should they have had more of a role in this chapter? Would you eat Strawberry and Peanut Butter flavour ice cream? We are not fans Ron mentions Percy wants to be Minster of Magic one day - we discuss Percy's ambition and whether it comes down to who he is fundamentally or if it began more out of necessity as he doesn't want to be in the same financial state as his parents We agree Lockhart is the OG Influencer  Ginny speaks up for Harry despite her crush on him usually debilitating her - showing us the beginning of her strength  Was Lucius slipping Ginny the Diary politically motivated? He is firmly against Arthur's Muggle Protection Act and figured if Ginny got caught it would look bad on him, like Dumbledore reflects at the end of the book We wish we could have seem Jason Isaacs and Mark Williams duke it out on screen like Mr Malfoy and Mr Weasley did in the book What would Hermione's parents be thinking after all of these? They are described as shaking  Lucius didn't know the Diary was a Horcurx, but probably knew it would open the Chamber of Secrets - was it supposed to be given to someone who didn't know what it was, or would it have worked out better if someone had it who wanted the Chamber open and knew what it was? We know from Dobby that Lucius had been planning the Chamber opening - was he planning Ginny the whole time, or was it a moment of opportunity?  Email any thoughts, questions or feedback to potterrevisitedpodcast@gmail.com Music: Shelter Song by Alexander Nakarada (www.serpentsoundstudios.com) Licensed under Creative Commons BY Attribution 4.0 License https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Follow Us:  Facebook  https://www.facebook.com/potterrevisited Twitter https://twitter.com/potterevisited Instagram https://www.instagram.com/potterrevisited_/ Youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4v2Xt0OIQ8_LCVYhKf2S5A TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@potterrevisited

This week on the Binge, we covered Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' 4th chapter: At Flourish and Blotts. In this chapter Harry is transported to the wrong side of town - however much it defies logic - witnesses some shady Malfoy behavior, is nearly kidnapped, meets a total tool who he finds out will be teaching him, and has front row seats to a dad fight. I also shine a light (Lumos) on the Graingers (Hermione's parents, remember them?) and soooooo many questions about muggle parents in the wizarding world. I do some Divination foreshadowing, give/take house points, and callout the parts of the chapter that are utterly Riddikulus! Episode #59: Avoid Investor Complacency In our last episode, we discussed expectations for 2022 - including higher volatility than we've seen in the last few years. We're seeing it already, so this episode will delve further into why we expected this to happen. We'll talk about inflation, back-to-back years of strong market performance, and the Federal Reserve. We'll also discuss why it's important for investors to avoid becoming complacent in times of higher volatility, and why you should have plans in place for inevitable market dips. Please write a review of this podcast on Apple Podcasts or Alexa! Episode Transcript: We finished our “Expectations for 2022” by stating that higher volatility should be expected this year. Since the first few weeks of market activity this year have been pretty volatile, it might help to explain why we expected this to happen. The first is that higher inflation rates have historically led to more volatility because investors are forced to re-evaluate their earnings expectations as some companies struggle during an inflationary environment while others thrive. We are also coming off back-to-back years of strong stock market performance despite an ongoing global pandemic. In addition, expectations for what the Federal Reserve will do to fight inflation while supporting economic growth vary on a daily basis. There were 52 trading days in 2021 when the market moved up or down by 1% or more, which is below the average of 63 days. We experienced 70 new all-time highs for the S&P 500 Index last year despite having negative returns on 43% of the trading days. The worst single trading day was down 2.6% and the biggest cumulative drawdown for the year took place in September when the market fell by a little over 5%. All things considered, those are better than average results and a stark contrast from 2020 when there were 109 days when the market was up or down by more than 1%, including 7 of the 20 most volatile trading days in market history. It's important for investors to avoid being complacent during periods of market volatility, which has definitely been the case in the early stages of 2022. Over 220 companies with market capitalizations over $10 billion are down at least 20% from their market highs. We have witnessed the highest volatility levels in the Nasdaq Index which is dominated by Technology companies. Although the Index is down about 7% for the year, about 40% of the stocks in that index are down 50% from their highs. It can be difficult to explain that investors maximize their return opportunities by being long-term investors who stay patient through market downturns while also stating the importance of avoiding complacency. I want to explain the strategies we use at Flourish during periods of market volatility. The starting point is to have plans in place for the inevitable market dips. A drop of 10% is defined as a “market correction” and typically happens at least once every 18 months. It's been almost 2 years since the last market correction in February and March of 2020, so a market correction in the first half of this year should not be a surprise to anybody. The bigger question is how to react when the correction occurs while staying invested in case a correction doesn't happen. At Flourish, we look at two data points simultaneously. The first is to confirm that clients who are taking periodic withdrawals from their portfolios to support their lifestyle have a safe multi-year cash flow plan in place. It is reassuring to know that a stock market dip of 10% or more will not influence a client's ability to access the cash they need. In addition, we closely monitor the impact of a market dip on client allocations, looking at how the target allocation to stocks and bonds is being affected by market movements. In many cases, a correction is a buying opportunity for long-term investors who can sell a portion of their bond holdings to buy stocks at a discount. Corrections are also an opportunity for clients who have cash reserves outside of Flourish to add to their portfolio through additional stock purchases. For investors who measure success based on 5-, 10-, and 20-year returns, a market dip measured in days, weeks, or months is a relatively short time period. Market volatility can also extend into the Bond market, although our focus on shorter-term bonds with high credit quality ratings typically benefits from stock market corrections. At the same time, this environment creates an opportunity to evaluate the mix of bond investments to identify new investment options that could be added to client portfolios. We are currently exploring a few different bond investments that are designed to do well in a rising interest rate environment along with alternative investment strategies with a non-traditional approach to minimizing risk while earning moderate returns. Sticking to the same mix of preferred investments despite changing market conditions is the definition of complacency, in my opinion, so it's our responsibility as a Fiduciary to constantly be in search of investment options that capitalize on a changing market environment. We also take a proactive approach to Tax Loss Harvesting trades during market downturns. Tax Loss Harvesting involves identifying positions in a taxable account with a current value lower than what was initially paid at the time of purchase, also known as cost basis. We run reports that analyze client holdings by tax lot to identify opportunities to sell those investments and capture or harvest the loss to offset other taxable gains. In addition, we reinvest the proceeds in a similar investment so the client's asset allocation stays aligned with their long-term goals. Tax Loss Harvesting is an example of avoiding investor complacency because we maintain the same long-term approach to the market while reducing the future tax burden for our clients. Staying diversified across investment opportunities is an important concept that we do not abandon just because part of the market may be experiencing short-term headwinds. Hopefully, this has been a helpful overview about how you can stay proactive with your investment decisions while maintaining a long-term buy and hold investment philosophy. This will likely be an important mindset to maintain throughout 2022 as the volatility we've experienced in the first part of January could extend throughout the year in one form or another.   For more up-to-date insights into the market, the economy, and what it all means for your portfolio, subscribe to Flourish Insights on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts. Episode 41: Can You Get Back Into the Market Now? It’s been over a year since the bottom dropped out of the stock market during the midst of the coronavirus crisis. At Flourish, we encouraged our clients to stay in the market and focus on the long-term throughout the turmoil. However, not all investors were able to withstand the emotional, psychological, and financial strain of watching account balances drop on a near-daily basis. As a result, many people sold when the market was on its way down, or even at the bottom. The question then becomes, when is it wise to get back in? In this episode, Jay Pluimer shares his perspective about why now is a good time to reinvest in the market, based on both historical trends and current data. Episode 35: What Biases Influence Your Investment Decisions? There are as many different approaches to making investment decisions as there are colors of the rainbow, but they all share a few common elements. At Flourish, we embrace an aspect called behavioral finance, which explains how personal influences and biases affect the financial behavior of investors. Behavioral finance is a relatively new concept, and the study of human emotions and financial decision-making is still evolving. However, an important development has been that, despite our best intentions, we are not able to make rational investment decisions without being influenced by three broad categories of biases: representativeness, anchoring, and availability. At Flourish we believe we all have our part to play in ensuring women, families and communities are invested in and well supported in order to flourish, so we hope the lessons learned through this consultation, report and podcast gives food for thought and recommendations we can all act upon. If you would like to read the report see HERE (http://10gm.org.uk/assets/files/10GM-Consultation-recommissioningwomenssupportservicesFINALREPORT.pdf) and hear more from women with lived experience on these issues via the listen again version of a Round Table discussion we had as part of the consultation HERE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vve-qL6naY) . Turn to Page 42, At Flourish and Blotts. Today’s lesson is called Subtle Clues. The chapter begins with Harry loving his time at the Burrow, experiencing life in a loving, wizarding family. His time there is capped by a trip to Diagon Alley via the Floo Network. They are all going to buy their school supplies for a new year at Hogwarts. Harry botches his first use of Floo powder and winds up in Knockturn Alley, at Borgin & Burkes. He hides from Draco Malfoy and his father, Lucius, who is trying to unload some poisons. Eventually, the Malfoys leave, and Harry escapes the shop unseen, only to be cornered by a witch. Harry is saved from this situation by Hagrid, who happened to be in Knockturn Alley himself. Hagrid leads Harry back to Diagon Alley, where they meet up with Hermione, her parents, and eventually all of the Weasleys. After a trip to Gringotts, Mr. Weasley insists on buying Hermione’s muggle parents a drink, and the kids split off. Harry, Ron, and Hermione enjoy an hour reunited and surrounded by awesome wizarding shops. Eventually, they make their way into a crowded Flourish and Blotts for a book signing with Gilderoy Lockhart, a famous and handsome wizard who has written many of the books on their school shopping list. Lockhart notices Harry, and pulls him to the front where he announces that he will be their Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. As Harry steps down, Malfoy confronts him, and the situation escalates until Lucius Malfoy and Mr. Weasley come to blows. After the scuffle, they prepare to take the Floo Network back to the Burrow. Melting Potter episode 4 discussing chapter 4 of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, At Flourish and Blotts - it’s a long one! We talk at length about Wizarding World politics such as disposing of dark magical artefacts vs. preserving them, regime changes and how the opposition vilifies the ruling party, and how ordinary people can have no choice but to become accomplices and how we shouldn’t judge them. for that We also discuss the connection between what’s happening in the Wizarding World and what happened in post World War II Germany, including the importance of bearing witness and of keeping tangible proof so as not to give deniers a chance to say some things never happened, and how persecuting people who are just nostalgic about old times can be a double edged sword. In our talk, we touch upon Molly’s attitude toward Gilderoy and whether it’s meant to be endearing or signal a larger problem in her marriage. We also include a POV retelling through Lucius’ eyes, and we discuss Arthur’s internalised sense of worthlessness when it comes to the Malfoys. On a lighter note, Harry is being unnecessarily sneaky and we try to figure out why on earth would Dumbledore hire Gilderoy. Finally, are Madame Hooch and Professor Sprout in a loving relationship? We think so!

"Very fishy. Definitely dodgy." After Ron's heroic rescue of Harry who was imprisoned in the Dursley house, Harry updates the Weasley brothers on everything that happened during the summer. They have a very different take on the Dobby episode. Unlike Harry, they think that Dobby was sent by someone who hates Harry aka Draco Malfoy. At this point, it is important to note that the Weasley brothers and Harry are in a magical flying car. They are flying it back to the Burrow, where the Weasleys live. We meet Mrs. Weasley who is very angry about the boys flaunting the statute of secrecy in this way. She assigns them chores but doesn't forget to feed them. Mr. Weasley is happy to finally meet Harry but he is happier when he hears that the flying car works because he was the one who enchanted it. Harry has the time of his life in the Burrow. He likes how disorderly and loving the Weasleys are. When his second-year term is about to start, they all decide to travel to Dialog alley using floo powder. Harry, unfamiliar with this new complicated method of travel, ends up in Knockturn Alley, where he overhears a suspicious conversation between Mr. Malfoy and a dark magic shop owner Mr. Borgin. He is saved by Hagrid who brings Harry to the anxious Weasleys. They shop for a while and then go to Flourish and Blotts to buy their very expensive books. Here Harry and the gang meet their future Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher - the very colorful Gilderoy Lockhart. The summer holidays end. The Weasleys and Harry hurry to catch the Hogwarts Express. What happens next will probably not surprise you if you have read the books.--Wow. I am tired of typing the summary. So many things happen in these chapters. And I did not even mention Ginny, Percy or the lady selling human fingernails. Just listen to the episode and enjoy our discussion of these very eventful chapters.--HARRY POTTER STORIESIn this episode, this segment features Muralidhar Mutnuru, a listener of the podcast. If you are interested in sharing your story with us, just record yourself telling the story of how you starting reading the books and send it to mimblewimblepodcast@gmail.com.PREPARATIONYou can prepare for this episode by readingChapter 3: The BurrowChapter 4: At Flourish and BlottsChapter 5: The Whomping Willowof Harry Potter and the Chamber of SecretsYou can also listen to this podcast on iTunes, Google Podcast, or any other favorite podcast app. Just search for Mimblewimble - The Harry Potter Podcast.NOTESThe editor (Aishwarya) tells me that I was so tired when we recorded this video that my continuous yawning ruined the latter part of the episode.
