Is Harmens missie geslaagd of mislukt? - Mijn Nederlands-Amerikaanse familie en ‘Now it's our turn!'
- Mijn Nederlands-Amerikaanse familie en ‘Now it's our turn!'
Have you ever tried talking politics with your teen, only for it to spiral into a heated argument—or leave you wondering, “Where did they even get these ideas?!” It's frustrating when their opinions feel so different from your own, and you worry they might be heading down the wrong path. But, no matter how hard you try to talk reason into them, nothing seems to get through. If that sounds familiar, you're not alone—I hear this from parents all the time. So, what can you do?
Social media had many people weigh-in this week regarding the Inauguration Day National Prayer Service where Bishop Budde addressed President Trump directly. Tom and Tabi used this moment to broach the subject of political discourse. As followers of Christ, how do we engage in these and other difficult conversations biblically? Especially in addressing ideas and people with whom we disagree. Special thanks to Dr. Jim Denison.

Today we're going to see if one American family can flip the usual, tortured and tedious script for arguing about politics and do something more interesting. Jenn and Todd Brandel sit down with their dad, Bruce, to see if they can come to a better understanding about what has shaped their different political views. Mónica Guzmán, senior fellow for public practice at Braver Angels and author of I Never Thought Of It That Way: How To Have Fearlessly Curious Conversations in Dangerously Divided Times, is back to provide some insightful post-game analysis. In this second episode of our special two-part series, she breaks down what went well, what got a little messy, and what we can all apply to our own conversations with loved ones. Jenn and Todd Brandel have a close, loving relationship with their father, Bruce. But one thing makes their blood boil: his political chain emails. The messages are often forwarded commentary written in a provocative tone, and are an unwelcome reminder of just how far apart the family is politically. On this episode of How To!, we're joined by Mónica Guzmán, senior fellow for public practice at Braver Angels and author of I Never Thought Of It That Way: How To Have Fearlessly Curious Conversations in Dangerously Divided Times. In the first of a special two-part episode on talking politics with our parents, Mónica teaches Jenn and Todd how to aim for understanding with their dad, not agreement. Next week, Jenn, Todd, and their dad Bruce will put these tips into practice—on mic—around the kitchen table, as Mónica provides post-game analysis. We'll dive into what worked, what got a little messy, and how to keep making progress. The status quo has been to avoid politics with coworkers, friends and family, but that is changing. The question today is how to disagree respectfully.
In this episode, exorcist and demonology expert Father Carlos Martins discusses exorcisms, demonology, and spiritual warfare. In this 500th episode of Drunk Ex-Pastors we hear from a listener who suggests that the two reasons someone might leave Christianity are either doctrinal or interpersonal. We then spend the bulk of the show discussing our political differences, including third-party voting, idealism vs. pragmatism, the value of campaign promises, and whether a Harris victory is a true victory for women. Biebers involve unnecessarily over-complicating tech that used to be simple, and scrubber brushes.

This 'sode is all about surviving this turbulent political season. It's based on training we give our staff at PelvicSanity about how to navigate an election and patients who are passionate/anxious/fired up about the political environment.Let's start with this - talking politics with your patients is never going to go well.Even if you're on the 'same team', going back and forth about what the 'other side' is doing is only going to rile both of you up.And if you have political disagreements, you aren't going to change anyone's mind. Especially not while your finger is up their butt! But with only a handful of days left until an election, it seems almost impossible to avoid this conversations. So how do we navigate them?1) Be curious. If your patient brings up politics, be curious. Ask more about whether their family agrees with them. How much political TV or news they are taking in. Whether it's helping or hurting their symptoms or issues.2) Have a 'no politics' policy. You can also just be a little more firm with a 'no politics' boundary. You could say something like: "totally respect your opinion, but with things so polarized I think it's best to steer away from politics and focus on your pelvic health. How have your symptoms been this week?"3) Shut it down. If your patient says something you feel you can't just let slide - we give an example in the 'sode - it's shutting the conversation down in 1-2 sentences and then immediately redirecting back to them and their care.We hope this helps navigate these conversations until the election! Remember, it's not about you - while it's great to hold strong beliefs of your own, people on the 'other side' (whatever that is) deserve great care as well.Accelerator - January Cohort! If you're a business owner looking to take things to the next level in 2025, you don't have to go it alone! We're doing something a little different on this episode, and throughout this month, as we approach a major and divisive election in the United States. We're going to talk about politics from a neutral and curious place. No ranting. No calling you an idiot if you don't share my beliefs. No name-calling, period. I've invited Lindsey Cormack back to the show, because she's one of the few people I know who can genuinely deliver on this type of political discussion. We recently released an episode together called How to Raise a Citizen, and I was so impressed with her approach that I asked her to come back. I don't know Lindsey's political beliefs and she doesn't know mine. We're going to have a conversation about politics that is likely very different from what you're used to. I hope it's refreshing and that it gets you thinking. Because it's critically important that we practice the hard skills of listening, learning, curiosity, and empathy right now more than ever. It takes no skill to foam at the mouth and call someone names. True leadership, and true citizenship, is about understanding, listening, and engaging in meaningful dialogue. Let's be an example of that. Let's model the behavior we want to see— let's behave better. On today's show, we're continuing our discussion and demonstration of how we talk politics with our kids. We are excited to share a conversation today between Brian Tyler Cohen, Sarah, and Sarah's teenage son Griffin. A conversation between a teenage content consumer, the content creator, and the teen's parent is a rare combination - one we think offers a lot of insight. We are thrilled to be hosting a joint live show this November 7th with one of our favorites, Vanessa Zoltan of Harry Potter and the Sacred Text!
