Show Notes: Amy Hawk — Author, Bible Teacher, and Truth-TellerWhat happens when faithfulness to Jesus begins to put you at odds with the religious community that shaped you?In this episode of Stories from Real Life, I sit down with Amy Hawk, an author, Bible teacher, and writer whose work explores the uncomfortable intersection of Christianity, politics, conscience, and spiritual courage. Amy spent roughly two decades serving in evangelical church life—teaching Bible classes, leading Bible studies, women's ministry, prayer ministry, and adult discipleship—before a season of deep disillusionment forced her to reexamine what it means to follow Jesus when institutional religion becomes entangled with power.Amy is the author of The Judas Effect: How Evangelicals Betrayed Jesus for Power, a deeply personal and Scripture-centered reflection on the American evangelical church, political allegiance, and the cost of choosing power over the way of Christ. The book is described as part Bible study and part personal faith journey, written out of Amy's own crisis of faith as she wrestled with what she saw happening inside parts of the church after 2016.She is also the author of Six Years in the Hanoi Hilton, the story of her father, U.S. Air Force pilot James Shively, who was shot down over North Vietnam in 1967 and spent six years as a prisoner of war. That earlier book explored courage, survival, suffering, and hope under extreme circumstances—themes that also echo through Amy's more recent work. Our conversation moves beyond politics into something more personal and searching: What does Christian integrity require? How do people hold onto faith when the institutions around them disappoint them? And how can Scripture become not a weapon for winning arguments, but a guide back toward humility, compassion, truth, and courage? In This EpisodeMelvin and Amy discuss:How Amy's years in evangelical ministry shaped her faith and her writing. Why she felt compelled to write The Judas Effect. The difference between loyalty to Jesus and loyalty to a political movement. What happens when speaking honestly costs you community. How Scripture helped Amy process disillusionment. The role of courage, repentance, humility, and compassion in the life of the church. How her father's POW story influenced her understanding of endurance and moral clarity. Why some conversations are difficult precisely because they matter. In this powerful episode I chat with Bible teacher and author with Our Daily Bread Publisher Mariel Davenport to talk about her transformative Tend Method — a simple yet deeply intentional way to study Scripture and hear God's voice through His Word.Mariel shares her incredible testimony of going from atheism to becoming a passionate Bible teacher after a coworker handed her a Bible and challenged her to read it. What began as an attempt to disprove Christianity became a life-changing encounter with the living God through Scripture. Some points we discuss:• Why many women feel overwhelmed when approaching the Bible• The importance of slowing down and studying Scripture in context• How the Tend Method helps women confidently hear from God for themselves• The power of being doers of the Word and not just hearers• Recognizing the enemy's schemes through knowing God's Word.If you've ever felt intimidated by Bible study, struggled to stay consistent in the Word, or longed to hear God more clearly, this conversation will encourage and equip you to tend your soul through Scripture one verse at a time.Connect with Mariel and learn more about the Tending Together community at her website. Use code: Podcast5https://marieldavenport.com/community/Plus, hear about her Bible studies with Our Daily Bread Publishing Ministry including Ruth: Finding Grace in the Unexpected, 1 Peter: Sustained by Living Hope, and her upcoming study on James. This episode will inspire you to slow down, cultivate intimacy with God, and allow His Word to transform your life from the inside out!

The return of "What About?" Wednesdays! Text us your questions for apologist and pastor Robby Lashua! Each year, the Northwest Christian School Board enjoys a session with the entire Northwest Christian secondary Bible team. The open-ended conversation includes highs and lows, strengths and weaknesses, and a focus on whether or not the program is truly impacting students and helping them to develop a Biblical worldview.Following the January 2026 version of the conversation, we recognized that we wanted to take it further and, in the spirit of transparency and authenticity, open it up for all to hear and participate. As a result, over the next several weeks and months, Kingdom Culture Conversations is going to take the time to walk through these conversations with each of the school's secondary Bible teachers.Today, we continue this journey with Alana Heater, Northwest Christian's freshman Bible teacher. A Northwest Christian alumni herself, Alana is on the leading edge of the high school's theology program and serves as the intermediary between our middle and high school programs. Teaching Old Testament, especially in sum, can be challenging but she makes the experience both memorable and meaningful in designing opportunities for students to engage the text. Alana is also the director of Northwest Christian's Academic Affiliate partnership with the Colson Center for Christian Worldview. In her two roles, and with this threefold perspective, her contributions to this ongoing conversation are beyond insightful. So, from this unique perspective, what does she have to say? What is working? What isn't? Send us Fan MailWelcome to On The Path with Cheryl Nembhard! This week, Cheryl sits down with Hakeem Bradley — biblical scholar, teacher, and Ph.D. candidate in New Testament Studies, whose passion is helping people understand Scripture with clarity, depth, and context. In this rich and eye-opening conversation, Hakeem shares his powerful journey from the 5% Nation worldview to a life transformed by the truth of Scripture. This is an invitation to move beyond surface-level understanding and engage the Word of God with renewed curiosity and conviction. The return of "What About?" Wednesdays! Text us your questions for apologist and pastor Robby Lashua! Many school advocate for "service learning", an educational concept defined as "an educational approach that combines meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities." But, at Northwest Christian, the bones of this concept are restructured, repurposed, and retitled "Missions Learning".So, pragmatically, what is the difference between service learning and Northwest Christian's "Missions Learning"?Tomorrow, March 4, is one of the 2025/2026 school year's "High School Serve Days" - a day completely dedicated to Missions Learning. As such, we thought it would be interesting to explore this question, as well as several others, with Tyler Collins, the high school teacher/leader that drives the program forward. What is the difference between service learning and Missions Learning? What happens when over 500 high schoolers set out to work within the community? Where do they go and what do they do?
