What Meaneth These Stones?

Crosstalk America from VCY America

On many occasions, individuals will do something so that they remember a significant life event. The Israelites gathered stones as they crossed the Jordan River. With the stones, they built a monument so that when future generations asked what the stones meant, they would hear of how God led them through and provided for them. We also put up monuments, not to worship, but to remember individuals or events that have impacted our nation in a significant way. Unfortunately, it's these statues and monuments that are under attack. Why is this happening? To address this issue, Crosstalk welcomed Dr. Tim Schmig. Dr. Schmig is executive director of the Michigan Association of Christian Schools, director of Stories in Stone and author of Stories in Stones: Our Heritage of Evidence. So why is there such a concerted effort to remove statues and monuments today? Dr. Schmig believes part of it is because people today are looking back through the lens of their own personal experiences, therefore they view our nation's founders based upon what's known as "presentism." In other words, they weigh the actions and productivity of the founders (and others who've gone on before us) based on what they believe is right today. As he noted, none of us are perfect, including America's founders. The present day protesters that tear down monuments aren't perfect either. So if you look at our nation through the lens of idealism, we'll be weighed in the balances and found wanting. Yet if you look at America's history based upon the times that they lived in, you'll see that those individuals did some amazing things.

In this episode, Matt Jamison explore the vital role of Scripture memory through the competitive sport of Bible quizzing. The conversation begins by revisiting the historical "Old Deluder Satan Act" of 1647, which established public education for the purpose of teaching children to read the Bible and guard against spiritual ignorance. Joining the program to share his passion is Micah Folkers, founder of the Cameroon Quizzing Association and a dedicated "Bible quiz evangelist."Micah breaks down the mechanics and philosophy of Bible quizzing, describing it as a high-intensity sport that demands split-second strategy and deep textual mastery. Beyond the competition, the episode examines how quizzing serves as a powerful solution to biblical illiteracy, building a vibrant school culture by making the study of God's Word exciting and relational. Whether you are looking to revitalize a legacy program or start from "ground zero," this episode provides practical tools for integrating quizzing into your school's mission. Listeners will also gain insight into the international expansion of the sport and find resources to help their students take the "next step" in their spiritual walk. For more information about getting a Bible Quiz program started at your school, be sure to visit https://www.biblequizzer.net/.

How do we move students from simply talking about truth, goodness, and beauty to actually living those ideals out in everyday life? In this episode of BaseCamp Live, Davies Owens is joined by Sharon Carlson for a thoughtful conversation about what it means to develop an “operational theology” , a faith that shapes not just beliefs, but daily decisions, relationships, failures, and future plans. Sharon draws from decades of experience in classical Christian education, student formation, counseling, and college advising to explore how schools and parents can help students connect theology to real life. Together, they discuss: Why students often struggle to apply Christian truth in practical decisions What “the good life” actually means from a biblical perspective How parents and schools can respond redemptively when students fail Why discipline moments can become discipleship opportunities The difference between knowing Christian virtues and becoming more like Christ How theology helps students navigate anxiety, uncertainty, and major life decisions Why “the best next step” matters more than fear of making the “wrong” decision Sharon also shares insights from mentoring students through college and career decisions, helping them understand that God's will is ultimately about being conformed to the character of Christ, not simply finding the perfect school, job, or path.

They break down what’s actually happening inside schools right now, especially in places like Maryland, where policies around “mental health,” inclusion, and education are creating serious controversy. From headlines about tampons in boys’ bathrooms to deeper conversations about how school systems shape beliefs over time, this episode goes beyond surface-level outrage. Alvin argues that the real influence isn’t coming from obvious curriculum—but from systems like counseling programs, social-emotional learning, and the language used around “kindness” and “empathy.” Bryce and Alvin dig into how those ideas are taught, how they evolve as kids grow up, and why many parents feel like they’re missing what’s happening until it’s too late. They also get into: Why some school policies spark reactions—and how those reactions are then used to justify more change The shift in discipline, bullying, and student behavior over the years What parents can actually do if they want more control over their child’s environment The bigger question of where responsibility starts—and where it shouldn’t be handed off Ready to JOIN THE FIGHT? Birth tourism and birthright citizenship have become more than legal debates—they reflect a deeper distortion of constitutional intent, driven by profit, corruption, and compromise. In this episode, we examine how systems meant to protect a nation have been twisted to enrich the powerful, embolden criminal enterprise, and undermine sovereignty. When money and kickbacks flow freely, accountability disappears—and infiltration follows. But the problem doesn't stop at government. The same patterns of deception have quietly entered the Church. False teachers, diluted doctrine, and a casual, carnal version of the Kingdom have reshaped faith into something comfortable rather than holy. Families and congregations feel “liberated,” yet Scripture warns us that not all "freedom" is from God.Through the sobering story of Nadab and Abihu, who offered strange fire before the Lord and paid with their lives, this episode confronts the cost of ignoring God's commands. Our God is the omniscient, all‑knowing Creator of the universe—our Shield, our Rock, and our firm foundation. There is nothing fake, artificial, or deceptive about Him. God has given us His Word as a lamp unto our path, guiding us in truth in an age filled with confusion and counterfeit authority.Artificial intelligence, anthropic systems, and digital entities can purport sin—but they cannot atone for sin. Sin is not artificial; it is real, depraved, and destructive. And it can only be paid for by one sacrifice: the shed blood of Jesus Christ. No technology can redeem a soul. No system can replace the Savior.Today, nefarious deception is at our fingertips—before our eyes and even influencing our thinking. As we reflect on 250 years of liberty and freedom, this episode reminds us that true freedom is not found in systems, governments, or technology, but in Christ alone. We are warned not to become entangled by the “world wide web,” nor to use liberty as an occasion for the flesh. Instead, Scripture calls us to serve one another by love, anchored firmly in truth. This episode stands as both a reminder and a warning. Be discerning. Be grounded. In an age dominated by technology and artificial intelligence, where voices compete for authority and truth is often reshaped by culture, this episode calls believers back to an unshakable foundation. A transformed mind in Christ is evident—not entangled again in the yoke of bondage, not deceived by substitutes that can never replace the one true and living God.AI may imitate intelligence, but it can never redeem. It cannot shed blood for sin. Only Jesus Christ, through His sacrifice, has made cleansing and remission of sin possible. The Word of God remains our final authority, the power behind our faith, and the anchor of the Body of Christ—His church—against which the gates of hell shall not prevail. This episode challenges listeners to examine their relationship with technology and cyberspace through a biblical lens. We explore three critical pillars for believers today: • Critical thinking rooted in Scripture • The King James Bible as our authority • Conviction over preference—truth over cultural influenceWe also address the often-avoided issue of computer temperance. Are our devices tools, or have they become masters? Are we disciplined, or distracted? Addicted, or alert? Now is the time to examine our hearts, our habits, and our sources of truth. Be not deceived. In this episode, we reflect on the truth that God deals with nations according to His perfect plan, as clearly demonstrated in Scripture through His dealings with the Moabites and Amorites. The command rings out through history: “Hear, O Israel… love the Lord thy God,” and let His words dwell first and foremost in the heart. Obedience to God's Word has always been the foundation of blessing. We also consider how America has been uniquely blessed because godly preachers stood firm, faithfully proclaiming and preserving the Word of God. As a result, citizens have enjoyed the freedom to worship God openly and to pursue their God‑given talents without coercion. Under a system of limited government, established by the consent of the governed, no other people have lived with such liberty. This episode reminds us that God's Word is true, His promises never fail, and His perfect plan brings blessing to individuals and nations that honor Him. True freedom flows from faithfulness—and history bears witness to that enduring truth. The Voice in the Wilderness does not endorse any link or other material found at buzzsprout.More at https://www.thevoiceinthewilderness.org/

The Voice in the Wilderness

In this episode, we turn to Deuteronomy 2:9 to remember a foundational truth: God rules the nations according to His sovereign will. The Lord gave the land of Ar to the children of Lot—not because of their strength or merit, but because of His divine purpose. Again and again, Scripture shows us that God's ways often move far beyond human understanding, and that blessing sometimes comes through relationship rather than righteousness. We explore how this principle still applies today. The Church itself stands blessed not by its own perfection, but because of the eternal covenant between the Heavenly Father and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. God's faithfulness transcends generations, failures, and even the chaos of history. This episode also reflects on the weight of April 14th, a date marked by powerful moments: Noah Webster publishing the first English dictionary, Abraham Lincoln being shot, the sinking of the Titanic—and now, the rising dominance of artificial intelligence. From Ai in the book of Joshua, reduced to a heap of ruins, to modern “AI” wielded by bad actors with malicious intent, the contrast is striking. Technology and nations rise and fall, but God's purposes remain unshaken. No matter the times we live in—or how uncertain the future may appear—we are reminded that it is God's perfect will that will be done. This episode calls listeners to rest in His sovereignty, trust His wisdom, and remain faithful in an ever-changing world. The Voice in the Wilderness does not endorse any link or other material found at buzzsprout.More at https://www.thevoiceinthewilderness.org/

North Carolina holds a unique place in America's road to freedom. In this episode, we explore how NC became the first colony to take official, independent action against British rule—an act that helped set the stage for the Declaration of Independence. From the Mecklenburg Declaration to the Halifax Resolves of April 12, the symbols and dates commemorated on the North Carolina flag tell a powerful story of courage, conviction, and resolve. As colonial leaders moved from Halifax to Philadelphia calling for total independence, it became clear that a king unwilling to hear his people would leave no path but war Yet this episode goes deeper than political history. We reflect on the timeless warning that “absolute power corrupts absolutely” and consider where the true first steps of freedom begin—not merely in governments, but in the hearts of people. Drawing a parallel between the fight for liberty and our spiritual calling, we explore what it means to claim true freedom in Christ, to lay aside pride, acknowledge Jesus as King of Kings, and pursue His will for His glory. The Voice in the Wilderness does not endorse any link or other material found at buzzsprout.More at https://www.thevoiceinthewilderness.org/

Step back onto Memory Lane and reflect on what truly matters. From the simple joy of wandering antique stores to the deeper meaning behind keepsakes gathered over more than 50 years of marriage, this episode is a reminder that the past still has something to teach us. We ask: What do we need to remember—and what have we forgotten? As we compare “then and now,” we explore how weddings, funerals, values, and appearances have changed, and how the rebel spirit of today often stands in contrast to a life devoted to God. In a world where social media puts our choices on display—including before missionaries and believers serving in desperate places—we're challenged to consider the message our lives are sending. This is a call to remembrance: of God's gift, His commission, and His commands. Who are the people in the greatest danger today? The Bible leaves no doubt—there are clear warnings for those who are willing to read and heed them. While we rejoice in the victory we have in Christ, Scripture also reminds us that covetousness carries consequences, and unchecked desires can lead to spiritual ruin.In this episode, we confront a growing concern: how modern influences—especially artificial intelligence and emerging technologies—may threaten churches and Christians if discernment is lost. Tools themselves are not evil, but they can become dangerous when they begin to shape our thinking, replace wisdom, or quietly claim authority over areas God alone should govern. We examine three crucial aspects of life where the enemy seeks control and ask an essential question: Where does your thinking come from? God commands His people to have transformed minds and to intentionally dwell on what is true, right, and godly. This podcast offers practical and critical insight for believers navigating today's challenges—calling us back to biblical thinking, spiritual vigilance, and faithful obedience in a world filled with distraction and deception. The Voice in the Wilderness does not endorse any link or other material found at buzzsprout.More at https://www.thevoiceinthewilderness.org/

Worldliness is quietly invading Christian schools and churches—often disguised as light, relevance, or progress. At the same time, believers in Iran are pleading for prayer and help, fully aware that the greatest battle they face is not political or cultural, but spiritual. In this episode, we ask an important question: What are Iranian Christians actually asking us to pray for? Their requests are sobering. They recognize a war on souls and the deception that surrounds them. They are praying for seasons of freedom to boldly spread the Gospel. They are asking for doctrinal clarity and for wise, faithful shepherds to guard the flock.Yet while they cry out for truth, it becomes clear that we in America also stand in desperate need of prayer. Scripture warns that the devil transforms himself into an angel of light, and the Spirit expressly speaks that in the latter days some will depart from the faith, giving heed to doctrines of devils. This episode is a call to remembrance—to put the brethren in mind of these things. It is a plea for vigilance, discernment, and a renewed commitment to good doctrine. More than strategy or programs, our deepest prayer request today is this: that God would preserve His truth in His church. Will we stand firm for sound doctrine in a time of great deception? The Voice in the Wilderness does not endorse any link or other material found at buzzsprout.More at https://www.thevoiceinthewilderness.org/

Full Text of Readings Tuesday in the Octave of Easter Lectionary: 262 The Saint of the day is Saint John Baptist de La Salle Saint John Baptist de La Salle's Story Complete dedication to what he saw as God's will for him dominated the life of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. In 1950, Pope Pius XII named him patron of schoolteachers for his efforts in upgrading school instruction. As a young 17th-century Frenchman, John had everything going for him: scholarly bent, good looks, noble family background, money, refined upbringing. At the early age of 11, he received the tonsure and started preparation for the priesthood, to which he was ordained at 27. He seemed assured then of a life of dignified ease and a high position in the Church. But God had other plans for Saint John Baptist de La Salle, which were gradually revealed to him in the next several years. During a chance meeting with Monsieur Adrien Nyel, he became interested in the creation of schools for poor boys in Rheims, where he was stationed. Though the work was extremely distasteful to him at first, he became more involved in working with the deprived youths. Once convinced that this was his divinely appointed mission, Saint John Baptist de La Salle threw himself wholeheartedly into the work, left home and family, abandoned his position as canon at Rheims, gave away his fortune, and reduced himself to the level of the poor to whom he devoted his entire life. The remainder of his life was closely entwined with the community of religious men he founded, the Brothers of the Christian School (also called Christian Brothers or De La Salle Brothers). This community grew rapidly and was successful in educating boys of poor families, using methods designed by John. It prepared teachers in the first training college for teachers and also set up homes and schools for young delinquents of wealthy families. The motivating element in all these endeavors was the desire to become a good Christian. Yet even in his success, John did not escape experiencing many trials: heart-rending disappointment and defections among his disciples, bitter opposition from the secular schoolmasters who resented his new and fruitful methods, and persistent opposition from the Jansenists of his time, whose moral rigidity and pessimism about the human condition John resisted vehemently all his life. Afflicted with asthma and rheumatism in his last years, he died on Good Friday at age 68, and was canonized in 1900. Reflection Complete dedication to one's calling by God, whatever it may be, is a rare quality. Jesus asks us to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30b, emphasis added). Paul gives similar advice: “Whatever you do, do from the heart…” (Colossians 3:23).Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Creation Moments on Oneplace.com

Spider silk begins as a liquid protein made by silk glands on the spider's abdomen. Spiders make many kinds of silk for different uses. As the liquid silk is forced through the spider's spinnerets, it begins to dry. The spinnerets pull and stretch the silk, creating just the right kind of silk for the spider's use. Though the result seems thin and weak to us, ounce for ounce, spider silk is stronger than steel.Web-building spiders make two types of silk for their traps. The basic structure of the web is made of strong, nonsticky silk. Then the spider adds a sticky, elastic silk to trap its prey. Some webs are irregular, others are flat and sheet-like, while still others are shaped like funnels. All of us have admired the beautiful orb web. However, spiders also have many other ways in which they use their silk. The ogre-faced spider makes a net that it throws around its intended victim. The European water spider builds its web underwater. It stores its air supply in the web. The lasso spider twirls a single strand of silk over its head. A tiny drop of sticky silk at the end of the lasso captures its prey when the lasso is thrown. Probably the most creative use of silk is by the young of some species. When they hatch, they produce long loops of silk that catch the wind and send them floating off to new places. The spider's skill in producing and using silk had to come from Someone wiser and more clever than the spider. Clearly, the spider has been well-equipped and instructed by its Creator.Romans 11:33“O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!”Prayer: Father, I thank You for the intelligence and wisdom You have so freely given to Your creatures. Help me to treasure, most of all, Your wisdom in the work of Jesus Christ for my salvation so that my life, too, may glorify You. In Jesus' Name. In this next episode in the BaseCamp Live series exploring classical Christian education, Davies Owens welcomes Dr. Michael Adkins for a thoughtful conversation about what classical Christian education really is and why that question matters so much for families, schools, and the future of society. Dr. Adkins brings both historical depth and practical insight as he explains that classical Christian education is not primarily about training students to do more, but about forming them to become a certain kind of person. In contrast to modern models that often focus on utility, credentials, and workforce preparation, this conversation highlights an older and richer vision of education, one centered on truth, goodness, beauty, wisdom, and virtue. As part of this ongoing series, the episode helps listeners see that classical Christian education is not a trendy alternative or niche experiment. It is part of a much larger tradition that has shaped the West for centuries. Davies and Dr. Adkins trace the historical shift from a largely biblical and classical model of education to the progressive philosophy that reshaped modern schooling, showing how those changes affected not only academics, but also the way students understand freedom, authority, responsibility, and the purpose of life itself. This episode is both a defense of classical Christian education and an invitation to better understand its roots, its goals, and its lasting relevance in a modern world that often feels confused and disordered.

As ODACS celebrates its 50th anniversary, the conversation highlights the association's unique role in supporting member schools across the state of Virginia.A primary focus is the recent legislative battle over House Bill 359, a radical proposal that sought to grant the state absolute control over private school hiring, curriculum, and disciplinary procedures by broadly defining private donations as "public assistance." While the bill is currently stalled in appropriations due to its significant fiscal impact, Jamison and Dan emphasize that this is only a temporary victory requiring continued vigilance. The episode also recounts vital regulatory victories involving childcare ratios and fundraising overreach, underscoring the necessity of active political engagement. Looking forward, Zacharias and Coppola explore the "golden opportunity" presented by the Education Freedom Tax Credit, a federal provision set for 2027 that will allow taxpayers to reclaim funds for Christian education. The discussion concludes with a reflection on the spiritual importance of maintaining a Biblical worldview in the classroom.

In this episode of BaseCamp Live, host Davies Owens sits down with Paul Laywell, founder of Eureka Science Education, to tackle a lingering stereotype - classical Christian schools love great books, but struggle to do science with the same depth and rigor. Paul shares his journey from public school teaching to becoming a “one man science department” in a classical Christian school, and why he became convinced that science is one of the most integratable disciplines. Not by forcing a Bible verse onto every lesson, and not by stripping science down to formulas and memorization, but by teaching science as a story, with real people, real ideas, and real consequences. You will hear why Paul jettisoned most textbooks, how he uses history and philosophy to strengthen scientific understanding, and why families do not need to fear that a classical approach will “hurt” students headed for medicine, engineering, or other STEM-adjacent careers. In fact, Paul argues that what universities and employers need most are students who can think, reason, and ask good questions.

In this special Q&A episode of The Celebrate Kids Podcast, Wayne and Dr. Kathy answer real questions from Christian school leaders and teachers at Linville Hill Christian School in Paradise, Pennsylvania and Hillcrest Academy in Minnesota. These questions aren't theoretical. They come from classrooms, dorm rooms, and dinner tables. Here's what they tackle: How do we teach empathy, especially toward students who are hard to love? Dr. Kathy explains that empathy begins with self-awareness. If children can't identify and manage their own feelings, they will struggle to recognize others' emotions. Discernment matters. Service matters. Prayer matters. And sometimes empathy grows not by fixing someone's pain, but by simply acknowledging it. Are we fooling ourselves about technology addiction? Screens are addictive. The dopamine cycle is real. But the deeper issue isn't just devices, it's the lies we attach to them: "I deserve to be happy all the time." "I need constant choice." "I'm the center." Technology amplifies those lies. The solution is formation. Sabbaths. Boundaries. Stewardship. Teaching children that they are created on purpose and cannot afford to waste their time. What about kids using AI to write their papers? This isn't just about cheating. It continues our conversation about formation. Writing is not simply information transfer; it is character development. Wrestling with ideas, revising drafts, struggling through clarity, that's where growth happens. AI might save time. But what if the point wasn't speed? The question becomes: What kind of human are we forming in our writing? How do we help perfectionist students who freeze under pressure? Perfectionism often grows from home culture. It can reflect unrealistic expectations, fear of mistakes, or conditional approval. Dr. Kathy reminds us: Perfect has already been done. His name is Jesus. Progress matters more than flawlessness. Struggle builds endurance, character, and hope. Perfectionism paralyzes. Grace frees. Why should we let kids struggle? Because resilience only grows through recovery. James 1 and Romans 5 remind us that perseverance produces character. If we rescue children too quickly, we risk raising fragile adults. Victory after struggle builds deep confidence. Struggle isn't failure. It's formation. So, this episode is packed with practical wisdom to guide kids and parents to deeper faith and stronger conviction. Stemming from a Christ-centered, Charlotte Mason education, the curriculum embodies western thought with the instruction that pursues truth, promotes wisdom and beauty, creates a pathway to responsibility, and fosters individual initiative and ingenuity. With the land as the laboratory and assistance from experts within the community, factual knowledge in math and science will be hands-on along with essential life skills such as: producing, processing, and marketing food, animal husbandry, sewing, and basic construction. Roots aim is to cultivate a generation of children ready to succeed in higher education, career, and life, while positively impacting the world around them and preserving the lost art of self-reliance. LEARN MORE at http://teach4theheart.com/371 In Christian schools, we tend to assume everyone is on the same page about abortion, but recent surveys indicate this is not the case. Shockingly, in a recent Ohio election, 30% of Christian school graduates voted for abortion, revealing a deep failure to clearly teach and form a biblical worldview on this critical issue. In this episode, Linda and Troy McIntosh (OCEN) confront why we're falling short in this important area and how we can boldly, faithfully, and compassionately reclaim our responsibility to teach the truth.
