On the podcast this week, the Bishop of Maine, the Rt Revd Thomas James Brown, talks to Madeleine Davies about the American Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Elizabeth Strout – many of whose books are set in the State of Maine, New England. They discuss, among other things, Strout's depiction of the Puritan mindset, the challenges of small-town ministry, and how clergy might respond to the gossip that occurs in their communities. Bishop Brown also considers the comparison often made between Elizabeth Strout and Marilynne Robinson. Madeleine has written a feature on Elizabeth Strout for this week's Church Times (16 December). Complete My Joy is an Apostolic Exhortation to the husbands and wives, mothers and fathers of the Diocese of Phoenix. Trey talked about living our lives in a manner worthy of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our faith is something that is meant to be implemented and have a say in every part of our lives. Trey said we are on the earth for a purpose, and part of that purpose is to show God to others through how we live our lives. We can find great joy in our families and grow together in holiness through them. One quote from the exhortation is “Family is likely where we feel the deepest joys as well as the deepest pain. This is because of the deep love that comes with families.” Listen to this episode to learn about carrying your cross while also walking through life with the joy of Christ! You can check out the full exhortation, Complete My Joy, here. And remember to pray, parent with a purpose, and prepare for God to amaze you, and He will!
