On this week's edition of The Spark Weekly. The Most Reverend Timothy Senior, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg, joins us from Rome to reflect on the life and legacy of Pope Francis, who died the day after Easter. Religious and political leaders, along with the Catholic faithful, are gathering in Rome for the Pope’s funeral, which took place on Saturday. Also on the program... Johannes Kelpius was a German Pietist, mystic, musician, and writer. He was also interested in the occult, botany, and astronomy. He came to believe with his followers – called the "Society of the Woman in the Wilderness" – that the end of the world would occur in 1694.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Initially called “Home from Rome,” Stec created the event to “Welcome the diocesan contingent home from their trip to Rome for World Youth Day,” but eventually changed its name to The Fest. The event takes place on the grounds of The Center For Pastoral Leadership, which is home to Saint Mary Seminary & Graduate School of Theology, and Borromeo Seminary, two seminaries that raise and train Roman Catholic priests. All over America in 2024, the Vatican is issuing the call for “wayward Christians” to return home to ‘Mother Rome', and sadly, many are answering that call. In tonight's Bible study, you will see from the Bible exactly how the Roman Catholic Church is counterfeit Christianity, and we will show you some of today's popular preachers who are giving their flocks over to the Vatican.

Born: 406 AD, Imola, Italy Died: July 31, 450 AD For more on St. Peter Chrysologus and his teachings From Wikipedia: Peter was born in Imola, where Cornelius, bishop of Roman Catholic Diocese of Imola, baptized him, educated him, and ordained him a deacon. He was made an archdeacon through the influence of Emperor Valentinian III. Pope Sixtus III appointed Peter as Bishop of Ravenna (or perhaps archbishop) circa 433, apparently rejecting the candidate whom the people of the city ofRavenna elected. The traditional account, as recorded in the Roman Breviary, is that Sixtus had a vision of Pope Saint Peter the Apostle and Saint Apollinaris of Ravenna, the first bishop of that see, who showed Sixtus a young man, the next Bishop of Ravenna. When a group from Ravenna arrived, including Cornelius and his archdeacon Peter from Imola, Sixtus recognized Peter as the young man in his vision and consecrated him as a bishop. St.-Peter-ChPeople knew Saint Peter Chrysologus, the Doctor of Homilies, for his short but inspired talks; he supposedly feared boring his audience. His piety and zeal won universal admiration. After hearing oratory of his first homily as bishop, Roman Empress Galla Placidia supposedly gave him the surname Chrysologus, meaning "golden-worded." Empress Galla Placidia patronized many of projects of Bishop Saint Peter. In his extant homilies, bishop Peter explained Biblical texts briefly and concisely. He also condemned Arianism and Monophysitism as heresies and explained beautifully the Apostles' Creed, the mystery of the Incarnation, and other topics in simple and clear language. He dedicated a series of homilies to Saint John the Baptist and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Peter advocated daily reception of Eucharist. He urged his listeners to confide in the forgiveness offered through Christ. He shared the confidence of Saint Pope Leo I the Great (440-461), another doctor of the Church. A synod held in Constantinople in 448 condemned Eutyches for Monophysitism; Eutyches then appealed to Saint Peter Chrysologus but failed in his endeavour to win the support of the Bishop. The Acts of the Council of Chalcedon(451) preserves the text of letter of Saint Peter Chrysologus in response to Eutyches; Peter admonishes Eutyches to accept the ruling of the synod and to give obedience to the Bishop of Rome as the successor of Saint Peter. In 2017, New York passed a law requiring employers to cover abortions in their health insurance plans. New York initially planned to exempt religious employers with sincere religious objections but later changed the exemption to protect only religious entities whose purpose is to inculcate religious values and who primarily employ and serve coreligionists. This exempted non-objecting ministries while leaving many religious groups that do object unprotected. Several of these unprotected religious groups—including an order of Anglican nuns, Roman Catholic dioceses, and Baptist and Lutheran churches—sued New York, arguing that the law forced them to violate their deeply held religious beliefs. The New York courts ruled against the religious groups and in 2021, represented by Jones Day and Becket, the groups asked the U.S. Supreme Court to hear its case. The Supreme Court granted the petition, vacated the bad rulings from the New York state courts, and told the state courts to reconsider the case in light of Fulton v. City of Philadelphia. But on May 21, 2024, the New York Court of Appeals found Fulton inapplicable and again upheld the abortion mandate. The religious groups’ cert petition is due on August 18, 2024. These characteristics are reflective of the constants which have presented themselves in this work and are presented here with the invitation to go deeper into them for further reflection. Read all 32 Points of Reflection HERE    In the 2020 CGS Journal Francesca Cocchini wrote an article about characteristic #27.  Today we will listen to that article as well as discuss it with Marty O'Bryan.  Marty also answers one of our listener's questions about how to manage a level one atrium and still follow the child with many little ones. Read the article HERE    Characteristic #27:  The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is also concerned with helping adults open their eyes to the hidden riches of the child, especially to the child's spiritual wealth, so that adults will be drawn to learn from the child and to serve him/her. The guiding principles in this endeavor are:  The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd does not seek success.  It does not set about to be important or to impress others. (Isaiah 10:33-11:10)  It is faithful to the spirit of the mustard seed. (Matthew 13: 31)  It stands in solidarity with the least in the church.    Marty O'Bryan began her formation in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd with Sofia Cavalletti in 1983 and has been a catechists since 1985. She conducts adult formations at Levels I, II and III throughout the United States. Benjamin Roberts, author of the new book on homiletics, The Voice of the Bridegroom. Fr. Roberts discusses his story of conversion, the artistic renovations made to his parish at Our Lady of Lourdes, Monroe, NC, his new book, and his devotion to St. Dymphna. Fr. Roberts shares his own personal journey on how the priest's spousal relationship with a parish can create connectivity that impacts a priest's homily and his ministry.Fr. Benjamin Roberts is a priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte, pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Monroe, NC, holds a doctorate in preaching from the Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, he serves as an Adjunct Professor of Theology for Saint Joseph's College of Maine and the author of the new book, The Voice of the Bridegroom. You can find Fr. Roberts on Twitter @Fr_benjamin; watch the interview we discussed on the Catholic TV Network, where he shares the artistic renovations to his parish, or watch his interview on Good Catholic, where he discusses his devotion to St. Dymphna, the patron saint of anxiety, depression, Alzheimer's, and every other mental illness. The Book: The Voice of the Bridegroom Preaching is a relational act. This book explores the relationship between the preacher and the assembly as a spousal relationship. Written by a parish pastor with a doctorate in preaching and rooted in the Roman Catholic notion of the priest as the bridegroom of the church, this work examines characteristics of the spousal relationship between husband and wife and then provides an analysis of the ministerial priesthood through this nuptial lens. This nuptial reflection on the ministerial priesthood is then applied to preaching. This book presents a nuptial hermeneutic or vision for preaching and the implications of this vision for the assembly, the preacher, the homily, and the homiletical method. The appendices include a one-page strategy for preaching summarizing the homiletical method, a rubric for homily evaluation by members of the assembly, and two sample homilies. Buy it on Amazon. It's Thursday, January 19th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Open Doors documents persecution of Christians in new list Open Doors US released its 2023 World Watch List on Tuesday.  The document ranks the top 50 countries where it is most dangerous for Christians. North Korea is back on top of the list after Afghanistan took the spot in the 2022 report. The other top 10 persecuting countries are Somalia, Yemen, Eritrea, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and Sudan. Open Doors estimates 360 million Christians faced high levels of persecution last year. Over 5,600 Christians were murdered, over 2,000 churches were attacked, and over 4,500 Christians were detained. According to Open Doors, Islamic violence is a driving factor which has led to the unprecedented numbers of Christians who have suffered. NARRATOR: “Right now, more Christians suffer higher levels of persecution and discrimination for their faith than at any time since the World Watch List began. “Over the last 30 years, Islamic oppression has grown and become more violent. Christian communities are severely attacked by a variety of jihadist groups. Converts pay a high price, and it's often their own families who carry out the so-called honor killings.” Church of England greenlights blessings of homosexual couples On Wednesday, the Church of England said it will not offer marriage ceremonies for people living in vile passions with the same sex. However, the organization plans to offer blessing services instead to homosexual couples. Bishops also plan on making an apology to people living sexually perverted lifestyles for any “rejection” they may have felt in churches. Proverbs 25:26 says, “Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.” Transgender treatments for kids: Easier to get in U.S. A new study by Do No Harm found it is easier for children to get so-called “transgender treatments” in the U.S. than in Europe. Countries like the United Kingdom, Finland, Sweden, and France have been closing down gender clinics or urging caution with the use of puberty blockers. Meanwhile, children in the U.S. have easier access to such things -- even without parental consent. Dr. William Malone, a board-certified endocrinologist, told Fox News, “Transgender medicine is big business, and youth who are transitioning today will be medical patients for life . . . Mental health among youth is at an all-time low, making them particularly vulnerable to solutions that suggest an ‘easy fix.'” Iowan Catholic Diocese affirms biological sex Thankfully, not everyone is following the transgender trend. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Des Moines, Iowa implemented 17 new polices on Monday in support of biological sex. The policies affect 17 schools and 80 parishes.  The diocese now requires students to use restrooms, wear uniforms, and play on sports teams that correspond to their biological sex. The policies also ban puberty blockers and so-called “preferred” pronouns.  The diocese stated, “Our biological sex, expressed by our body, is a gift from God and is unchangeable.”  New York COVID-shot mandate for health care workers struck down Last Friday, a New York state Supreme Court judge, Gerard Neri, struck down a COVID-shot mandate for healthcare workers. The state enacted the shot mandate in August 2021. Within months, tens of thousands of healthcare employees were terminated for not complying with the mandate, including many seeking religious exemptions. In June of last year, New York made the shot requirement permanent.  Plaintiffs welcomed the recent ruling. Mary Holland with Children's Health Defense said, “We hope that this decision will continue the trend towards lifting these dangerous and unwarranted . . . mandates throughout the country.” More tech layoffs Tech layoffs show no sign of stopping in the new year. Yesterday, Microsoft announced it would be cutting 10,000 jobs. So far this year, companies are laying off about 1,600 tech workers a day.  Tech layoffs in the first two weeks of 2023 amount to 15% of such layoffs in the whole of 2022. 22 Attorneys General oppose FDA on Kill Pill And finally, Attorneys General from 22 states are challenging the Federal Drug Administration's decision to increase access to the abortion Kill Pill. New FDA rules allow women to get the kill pills over the counter. The Attorneys General wrote a letter to FDA Commissioner Robert Califf calling for him to reverse the decision. The letter stated, “Though the FDA has abdicated its responsibility to protect women's health, we have not. To be crystal clear, you have not negated any of our laws that forbid the remote prescription, administration, and use of abortion-inducing drugs. The health and safety of our citizens—women and children included—is of paramount concern.” Isaiah 1:17 says, “Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Thursday, January 19th in the year of our Lord 2023. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Since 2002 Dr. Bruce Tallman has been a full-time spiritual director and marriage coach in private practice. He is passionate about his mission, which is to help people grow in wisdom and love. Bruce wrote the manual on how to make a living as a spiritual director – a seminal text for most working spiritual directors and companions called Finding Seekers: How to Develop a Spiritual Direction Practice from Beginning to Full-Time Employment. He also participated in our recent Making a Living 3 Webinar series, which is available as a recorded purchase on the SDI website. Bruce has a new book out, an exploration of the 17th century saint Francis de Sales and his 1616 Treatise on the Love of God. This book is called God's Ecstatic Love and is available for purchase on Amazon, and on Bruce's website – brucetallman.com. Bruce and I recently spoke about this recent book and caught up on all kinds of topics around spiritual direction. In spiritual direction, he has worked with laity and clergy from every Christian denomination. He has published two books for spiritual directors (one of them, Finding Seekers: How to Develop a Spiritual Direction Practice from Beginning to Full-Time Employment, is a bestseller in the field). He has also published two books on spirituality for clergy and lay people (see the "Books" page). He has had hundreds of articles on spirituality published in the London Free Press and other newspapers and is an adjunct faculty for the Haden Institute for Spiritual Directors Training. From 1988 to 2002 Dr. Tallman was the director of two adult religious education centers for the Roman Catholic Diocese of London, Ontario. He holds a Doctor of Ministry degree in Spiritual Direction/Counselling from the Graduate Theological Foundation, which is affiliated with the Gregorian Institute in Rome and Oxford University in England. Francis de Sales, bishop, doctor, saint, and mystic, published Treatise on the Love of God in 1616. Scholars consider it to be one of the classics of Christian literature, on the level of The Cloud of Unknowing, The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis, and The Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola. Yet, most people have never heard of it. Dr. Bruce Tallman's new book God's Ecstatic Love takes de Sales' spiritual masterpiece and updates it in a way that makes sense to 21st century minds. The Nativity School of Worcester can no longer call themselves Catholic. Bishop Robert J. McManus of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Worcester has prohibited the school from identifying itself as “Catholic” for refusing to remove their Pride and Black Lives Matter flags at his request. The Bishop argues the flying of these flags, “sends a mixed, confusing and scandalous message to the public about the Church's stance on these important moral and social issues.” Dan hears your reaction.

The history of the Palestine War does not only concern military history. It also involves social, humanitarian and religious history, as in the case of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jerusalem. A Liminal Church: Refugees, Conversions and the Latin Diocese of Jerusalem, 1946–1956 (Brill, 2020) offers a complex narrative of the Latin patriarchal diocese, commonly portrayed as monolithically aligned with anti-Zionist and anti-Muslim positions during the “long” year of 1948. Making use of largely unpublished archives in the Middle East, Europe and the United States, including the recently released Pius XII papers, Maria Chiara Rioli depicts a church engaged in multiple and sometimes contradictory pastoral initiatives, amid harsh battles, relief missions for Palestinian refugees, theological reflections on Jewish converts to Catholicism, political relations with the Israeli and Jordanian authorities, and liturgical responses to a fluid and uncertain scenario. The pieces of this history include the Jerusalem grand mufti's appeal to Pius XII to support the Arab cause, the Catholic liturgies for peace and international mobilization during the Palestine War and Suez crisis, refugees petitioning the patriarch for aid, and Jewish converts establishing Christian kibbutzim. New archival collections and records reveal hidden aspects of the lives of women, children and other silenced actors, faith communities and religious institutions during and after 1948, connecting narratives that have been marginalized by a dominant historiography more focused on military campaigns or confessional conflicts. A Liminal Church weaves diocesan history with global history. In the momentous decade from 1946 to 1956, the study of the transnational Jerusalem Latin diocese, as split between Israel, Jordan, Egypt and Cyprus, with ties to diaspora and religious international networks and comprising clergy from all over the world, attests to the possibilities of contrapuntal narratives, reintroducing complexity to a deeply and painfully polarized debate, exposing false assumptions and situating changes and ruptures in a long-term perspective.
