This is a rebroadcast from 2023! In this episode of Mindful Leader, host Dennis Shaw revisits a 2023 conversation with Thomas Risager, a pastor in the Danish United Methodist Church who is a candidate for the Episcopacy in the Nordic and Baltic Central Conference in early April.   They explore the unique religious landscape of Denmark, where a small percentage of the population attends church despite the majority being church members. Thomas shares insights on how Danish churches are adapting to modern challenges, employing music, especially gospel choirs, as an evangelism tool to connect with the community. Through anecdotes and heartfelt dialogue, this episode offers a profound look at the evolving role of the church in a secularized society and the innovative ways in which faith leaders are fostering a sense of community and spiritual connection in today's world.

As President Xi Jinping wrapped up his trip to Latin America last week, observers noted that the year 2024 has been special for marking the 10th anniversaries of a range of landmark events, such as China's hosting of the 2014 APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Beijing and the founding of the Forum of China and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.Following these memorable moments, Thursday also marks the 10th anniversary of another landmark event in China's foreign policy history — Xi's proposing of the idea of major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics. Many scholars and officials have been impressed by how Beijing has showcased distinct Chinese characteristics, style and ethos in its diplomacy, and how it has been working on building the image of a confident, self-reliant, open and inclusive major country with a global vision over the past 10 years. In the eyes of Keith Bennett, a London-based senior analyst on international relations and co-editor of the Friends of Socialist China platform, the Chinese characteristics of the country's major country diplomacy include a number of components, such as the country's commitment to peace, dialogue, equality, mutual respect, noninterference and win-win cooperation."The Chinese policies are not based solely on the narrow national interest, or interest at the expense of other countries", but instead have a global vision and "are for the benefit of all of humanity," he said.On Nov 28, 2014, Xi stated in his speech at the Central Conference on Work Relating to Foreign Affairs that China "must have a major country diplomacy with its own characteristics".In March 2016, the concept of major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics was for the first time clearly stated in the annual Government Work Report.Analysts said the concept has been developed in the past decade and has seen its theoretical architecture greatly taking shape and its supporting pillars being built. The Central Conference on Work Relating to Foreign Affairs held in December last year identified the theme of China's external work as building a community with a shared future for mankind, which is also the noble goal pursued by China in conducting major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics. The conference decided that the current and future work on foreign affairs should follow the principles of "self-confidence and self-reliance, openness and inclusiveness, fairness and justice, and win-win cooperation" — the guidelines of major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics."The concept helps to explain the definition and the underlying logic of China's diplomacy," said Chen Xulong, a professor of multilateral diplomacy and United Nations' reform studies at the University of International Business and Economics. The concept calls for the country to act as a major country should, shoulder its duties, meet the challenges, and make contributions to global governance, he said."A range of outstanding, distinct qualities of Chinese culture have been endorsed by this concept, including the consistent pursuit of a peaceful rise, objecting to hegemony and subscribing to innovation," he added. In an article published in January in Qiushi Journal, the flagship magazine of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, Foreign Minister Wang Yi wrote that "major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics in the new era builds on and carries forward New China's diplomacy"."China has become a responsible major country with enhanced international influence, stronger capacity to steer new endeavors and greater moral appeal," he wrote."Head-of-state diplomacy has played an important and irreplaceable role in major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics in the new era", he added. At a bilateral meeting with Xi on the sidelines of the 31st APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Lima, Peru, on Nov 15, Chilean President Gabriel Boric brought a copy of the fourth volume of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China, one of Xi's books.Boric presented the book to Xi and invited him to sign it.Nadia Helmy, an associate professor of political science at Beni Suef University in Egypt and an expert on Chinese politics and Asian affairs, said, "We find that China has achieved fruitful diplomatic results, as the diplomacy of the Chinese head of state, Comrade Xi Jinping, played a strategic guiding role."Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics "led China to achieve tangible achievements in the field of Beijing's foreign policy and international relations, (and) brought China closer to assuming the forefront of the global scene", she wrote in an article published in January. She listed some main points of China's major country diplomacy, such as "maintaining justice while seeking to achieve common interests at the political and economic levels", "sincere and friendly international relations with the developing countries" and "building a new type of relations between major countries".Regarding his expectations for China's major country diplomacy in the next 10 years and beyond, Bennett, the London-based international relations analyst, said that China is expected to win more support and more understanding from more countries, as there is "quite a strong contrast" between "the worldview and practice of China and the worldview and practice of most other major powers".

While many of our listeners are no doubt getting ready for Christmas festivities this week, for others the winter celebrations have already begun. Candles are being lit, loved ones are gathered close, and latkes are already sizzling in oil as our Jewish friends, family, and neighbors are celebrating Chanukah, the festival of lights. From Gerda Lerner and Gloria Steinem to Betty Freidan and Naomi Wolf, I have always admired to contributions of Jewish women to feminist thought and yet we haven't yet had the opportunity to highlight voices from the Jewish community this season. With that in mind, I was so grateful to be put in contact with a fabulous writer, thinker, and rabbi — Hara Person —who generously volunteered to join us this season and share some stories of powerful women in the Jewish holiday tradition.Rabbi Hara Person (she/her) is the Chief Executive of Central Conference of American Rabbis. Previously, she was the CCAR's Chief Strategy Officer. In that capacity, she oversaw the Communications Department and served as Publisher of CCAR Press, and worked with leadership on overall organizational strategy.Rabbi Person was ordained in 1998 from HUC-JIR, after graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Amherst College (1986) and receiving an MA in Fine Arts from New York University/International Center of Photography (1992).She served as Educator at the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue from 1990-1996, and was the Adjunct Rabbi there from 1998-2019. Since 1998, Rabbi Person has been the High Holy Day Rabbi of Congregation B'nai Olam, Fire Island Pines, NY.Before coming to the CCAR, Rabbi Person was the Editor-in-Chief of URJ Books and Music, where she was responsible for the revision of The Torah: A Modern Commentary (2005) and the publication of many significant projects, including the Aleph Isn't Tough adult Hebrew series and Mitkadem: Hebrew for Youth as well as several award-winning children's books. While at URJ, she was also the Managing Editor of The Torah: A Women's Commentary, named the National Jewish Book Award Book of the Year in 2008.Rabbi Person is also the co-author of Stories of Heaven and Earth: Bible Heroes in Contemporary Children's Literature and as well as co-editor of That You May Live Long: Caring for Your Aging Parents, Caring for Yourself, and Editor of The Mitzvah of Healing. This month, Don takes a look at the story of Thomas, the disciple often referred to as “doubting Thomas,” in the gospel according to John. In his reading of this story, Don presents a rather revolutionary interpretation of Thomas and his reaction to the disciples' claim that they have seen their teacher, Jesus. Through his refreshing take on the story, Don invites us to consider the Thomases among us, now. We can question: are we like Thomas? Liam, for one, energetically, if not sadly, claims to be a Thomasite. Give a listen and find out why. Following the discussion, Liam offers a reading - a prayer, in fact - from the Jewish Mishkan T'filah for Travelers, A Reform Siddur (or prayer book).  Produced by the Central Conference of American Rabbis I begin with a prayer of gratitude for all that is holy in my life. God needs no words, no English or Hebrew, no semantics and no services. But I need them. Through prayer, I can sense my inner strength, my inner purpose, my inner joy, my capacity to love. As I reach upward in prayer, I sense these qualities in my Creator. To love God is to love each other, to work to make our lives better. To love God is to love the world God created, and to work to perfect it. To love God is love dreams of peace and joy that illumine all of us and to bring that vision to life. In Trans-Forming Proclamation, Liam Hooper tenderly explores gender and the Bible. This book actually defies genre. With rich patches of poetry, memoir, and devotional, Liam weaves together inspiring literary insights with grounded, original, and informed scholarship. Trans-Forming proclamation: A Transgender Theology of Daring Existence is new wine in a new wine skin. It is Inventive, artful, and liberating. Available on Amazon and published by Otherwise Engaged.   About US In each episode of Bible Bash Podcast, , Liam Michael Hooper, a white trans Bible scholar and Don Durham, a white, cis, heterosexual farmer, minister, and podcaster take turns presenting the text. Darrell invites us to think about and celebrate a mystery which takes place every time we worship. When we worship here on earth, we are joining a worship service that is already in progress in heaven. By looking at the passages of Isa. 6, and Rev. 4&5, we see the heavenly worship has changed before and after the death and resurrection of Jesus. The changing dynamic of the heavenly worship shapes and empowers our earthly worship. On earth as it is in heaven. Today, when we gather together to worship, we are to cry out: worthy is the Lamb, who sits in the middle of the One who sits on the throne.

As you should know, we love firsts here at Kick It Forward and this one pleases us quite a bit. We are proud to provide the exclusive, first podcast interview of our new friend, Dean Johnson, head coach of the Des Moines Menace. Dean comes to us as a Watford, England native and journeyman player and coach. There is no question that he brings a winning mentality and a work ethic to the former Kings of the Heartland (apparently there's a new conference name, the Deep North Division of the Central Conference (facepalm)) and the 2021 USL 2 Champions. Currently the head coach at NCAA Division II powerhouse, Davis & Elkins, Dean has some big shoes to fill, but our impression is that he might put more pressure on himself to win than the Des Moines Society and Red Army combined. Please enjoy this conversation and also, have a little chuckle that we made Deano walk for about 12 minutes in the freezing cold to find a place to record and when we actually landed, it was at a frozen daiquiri bar. He was a great sport and we are excited to have him at the helm!

ABOUT THIS EVENT: Liturgy is a kind of sacred poetry, using metaphors and imagery that spoke to our ancestors. What happens when we pair our liturgy with more contemporary poetry? How does poetry help us better understand the yearnings, pain, joy, and questions expressed in our liturgy? And how does it offer us new insights and ways to grapple with the big questions, with doubt, and with our aspirations? ABOUT THIS SPEAKER: Rabbi Hara Person is the Chief Executive of Central Conference of American Rabbis. Previously, she was the CCAR's Chief Strategy Officer. In that capacity, she oversaw the Communications Department and served as Publisher of CCAR Press, and worked with leadership on overall organizational strategy. Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. This week, Tyler chats Rabbi Denise L. Eger, an incredible activist, author, proud lesbian, and inspiring Rabbi. Throughout her rabbinical career, she has worked extensively to include and uplift the LGBTQ+ community, she has worked tirelessly with and for people with AIDS, she was the first openly LGBTQ+ President of the Central Conference of American Rabbis which is the largest organization of Rabbis in the world, she’s also the past President of the Southern California Board of Rabbis (being the first woman and openly gay person to do that), and a past President of the Pacific Association of Reform Rabbis. But get this, she officiated the very first US same-sex marriage in L.A. County in 2008. What they primarily discussed was her groundbreaking new book: Mishkan Ga'avah: Where Pride Dwells: A Celebration of LGBTQ Jewish Life and Ritual. It is an absolutely gorgeous book filled with prayers, rituals, history, and traditions that actually include the LGBTQ+ community. There is no other religious denomination that has published a book of queer prayers as part of its primary liturgy. Along with her book, they also talk about inclusivity, tolerance vs. acceptance, seeking activism as a faith leader, and how to make our holidays more inclusive, right now, but also year round. Professor Ugalde also denounces the government’s use of the school system to indoctrinate the population ideologically, a population that continuously resists these attempts. He projects a very difficult year for the Venezuelan economy, and argues that the silence of the OAS about the "hegemonic will" in Venezuela is due to the country’s mass imports from Brazil as well as the government’s numerous irresponsible donations. Nevertheless, having studied several crises as a former member of the Social Equity Forum of the Inter-American Development Bank, he remains optimistic.
