Adinel Dincă is Associate Professor at Babeș-Bolyai University (UBB) in Cluj-Napoca.  In this interview he talks about his major research project “Restory – Recovering Past Stories for the Future: A Synergistic Approach to Textual and Oral Heritage of Small Communities”.  While this project focuses on the little known group of Transylvanian Saxons, it includes partners from all over Europe. The project aims to rediscover local experiences and micro histories by working along-side local galleries, libraries, archives, and museums, to share them with the localities that the stories came from.Adinel breaks down how the endeavour was developed, how the several elements of the project function and how the partners are working together.  He also points out that the research is particularly interested in the local stories of good resource management, whether this is through primary education to build better human resources, or through re-use and re-purposing of physical resources for pragmatic and symbolic aims. This podcast is part of a series of interviews covering central Europe in the medieval period for MECERN and CEU Department of Historical Studies. The Restory project is funded by the European Research Executive Agency through the Research and Innovation Actions, Cluster 2 - Culture, Creativity, Inclusive Society, Pillar 2 of Horizon Europe (call HORIZON-CL2-2023-HERITAGE-01-04: Cultural heritage in transformation – facing change with confidence; Project nr. 101132781). “We're not alone...that's kind of our mission and why we do the work that we do.”Anu Gorakanti (MD) and Laura Holford (RN) co-founded Introspective Spaces, a collective creating contemplative community spaces for healthcare workers to reconnect with themselves and reimagine a new way forward in healthcare. Now approaching their five-year anniversary, they share how they're building “small communities of care” across the country—one relationship at a time.Introspective Spaces on SubstackListen to a prior podcast with Anu and Laura here!Key Themes:* The Power of Slow Work: “Change moves at the speed of trust” (Stephen Covey, via adrienne maree brown's Emergent Strategy). Building authentic community takes time, and that's exactly what healthcare needs.* From Isolation to Connection: Both founders started Introspective Spaces after feeling alone in their moral distress, believing they were the only ones struggling. Their mission: help healthcare workers realize they're not alone.* The Imagination Battle: As adrienne maree brown writes, we're living in someone else's imagination. Healthcare's current design is intentional—but healthcare workers can activate their own imagination to create something different.* Humanizing One Another: “What if humanizing healthcare starts with humanizing one another?” Breaking down silos between physicians, nurses, and other healthcare workers can shift the entire culture of care.Introspective Spaces Programs:* Artist's Way cohorts (including a new healthcare parents group) Next cohort begins March 9th!! Jon Hubbell and Diane Malone shared stories of how they found ways to help people in need. Ron told of repelling down the front of a building in Lach. The goal was to raise $1000 for Thurston County Networks and Jon said proudly that the goal was exceeded. Diane added Sponsored Food Help for Thurston County was receiving help from and for Thurston County families in need. In small towns, residents rely on informal and formal networks to provide mutual support, from exchanging practical assistance to organizing community-wide aid projects. In these close-knit communities, social ties are stronger, and neighbors often know each other well, which builds trust and a collective sense of responsibility. Small-town help often happens spontaneously and informally, relying on a sense of shared community. Checking on each other: It is common for neighbors to keep an eye on one another, particularly the elderly or those who live alone. They notice when a neighbor's routine changes or when they haven't been seen in a while. Providing practical assistance: Neighbors lend a hand with day-to-day tasks. This includes things like sharing extra produce from a garden, mowing a recent widower's lawn, or bringing in a neighbor's trash can. Offering help during a crisis: In times of illness or family tragedy, residents will rally to support those in need. For example, they might cook and deliver meals, run errands, or organize carpooling. Sharing and borrowing resources: A culture of reciprocity allows neighbors to borrow infrequently used items, such as tools or lawnmowers. Sharing resources helps everyone and builds a stronger bond. Supporting new residents: In many small towns, newcomers are welcomed with friendly introductions and invitations to gatherings. Some communities compile welcome guides with information on local amenities and businesses. Organized efforts led by community groups are also a vital part of the small-town support system. Grassroots and mutual aid networks: Formed by local residents, these groups respond to specific community needs by providing food, delivering groceries, or checking in on people. These networks operate on the principle of reciprocal support. Community events and fundraising: Residents come together for social and charitable events, which are central to fostering community spirit. Examples include: 15 ideas to improve community spirit - Eden Project Communities15 ideas to improve community spirit * 1) Host a Big Lunch. You can hold a Big Lunch anytime, anywhere! ... * 2) Start a private WhatsApp, Facebook or Nextdoor What do you do when the restaurant wants a cash tip, but you don't have enough cash and all you have is a card? I have no problem paying a tip in cash if I have cash in my wallet, but I'm not going to empty my wallet for the restaurant's co… How do you feel about the idea of selling traditional street foods like Phuchka at high prices in fancy settings? If people are willing to buy cheap food at inflated prices, that's their choice. If there's a demand for legal substances and someone can meet that demand, why not? Fall is coming and to go along with the pumpkins, spiced lattes, and changing leaves, we also have corn Mazes. And a special one in Lodi is paying homage to the state we call home. Ben Jarboe talks to Angie Treinen an owner of the Treinen Farm Corn Maze. So why is Wisconsin the focus of this year's maze and what does it take to encapsulate the details? She says this maze is on 15 acres of land and over their 25 years of making corn mazes, they have learned what people like and don't like and continue to incorporate that.Cooler temps are on the way for the weekend. Stu Muck says it may be a little bit of a surprise at this stage of August to feel temps in the 60's, but that's what he expects for the weekend. The Ribbon is cut and now the Lafayette Hospital & Clinic in Darlington is ready to serve rural Wisconsin. The new state of the art hospital opened its doors officially on Thursday and Ben Jarboe spoke with the chairman of the county board, as well as the chair of the hospital committee. Jack Sauer says it's probably one of the proudest moments in his 24 years of public service. The project began in 2023, and features 84,000 square feet of space dedicated to quality health care for rural Wisconsin and the entire region. Sauer's proud not only of the financial collaboration that made the project a success, but the creativity they deployed to staff it. Sauer says they're offering up to $50,000 in stipends to offset the cost of education to entice and keep doctors at the hospital. July milk production was as big as expected. The 24 major dairy producing states brought a 3.5% increase in July milk to the market. Wisconsin's production was up less than 1%, but California, South Dakota, Texas and Michigan were just a few states with over 3% increase in milk. The Pro Farmer Crop tour concluded Thursday night in Rochester, Minnesota. While the full report will be released later today, many crop scouts on the tour said that despite the big yield projections, you can't lose sight of the disease risk. Emily Carolan is one of the scouts that measured through Western Iowa and Southern Minnesota. She says Sudden Death Syndrome(SDS) could take a toll on soybean yields. A little competition can keep you sharp! What if that competition is your spouse? A little good natured competition has inspired husband/wife team, Emily and Dan Sleik of Berlin, to be part of the 2025 Wisconsin Soybean Yield Contest. Pam Jahnke chats with the two about why they got started in the event and what they've learned along the way. Emily says their real goal is to replicate results and see how they benchmark against other farms in the state. The entry deadline to participate in this year's WI Soybean Yield Contest is August 31st.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ever wondered what it feels like to be the richest person in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere? Today's guest, Travis, is worth $50m, yet he's never been tempted to leave his hometown of 2400 people. Travis has already had an exit of $25m, and he's about to double that with a second exit. Now he's navigating life as the local big shot. From curious neighbors asking about his money to balancing wealth without being flashy, Travis shares the surprising perks—and awkward challenges—of being a big fish in a very small pond. In this episode, Travis shares why he chose to keep his family and business in a small town and why he believes more people should consider doing the same. He reveals the highs and lows of small-town life after wealth, from nosy neighbors to giving back to his community in ways that wouldn't be possible in a big city..  This is Moneywise, a podcast where host Sam Parr is joined by high-net-worth guests to explore exclusive insights into personal finance and lifestyle tailored for other high-net-worth people, or those on their way. They'll get radically transparent about the numbers, revealing things like their burn rates, portfolios, and spending habits. Who is Sam Parr? The Squad Community, a compact solar city car solution, as presented by CEO Robert Hoovers of Squad Mobility, offers a sustainable and affordable transportation option for urban and suburban areas. The vehicle, which is only 2 meters long and equipped with a solar panel on top, is designed for short-distance travel within communities, resorts, campuses, and gated neighborhoods.Compact solar city car solutionOne of the key advantages of the Squad Community is its reliance on solar power for charging. In sunny locations like Las Vegas or Tampa, the vehicle can charge up to 30 km per day, exceeding the average daily usage of 12 km for small vehicles. This means that owners in sunny regions may never have to worry about charging their vehicle, making it a convenient and cost-effective option for daily commuting and errands.Furthermore, the efficiency of the Squad Community is highlighted by its lightweight design and compact size. Weighing only 350 kilograms, the vehicle is easy to maneuver and park in urban environments where space is limited. The use of solar power technology also adds to the efficiency of the vehicle, providing an additional 30 kilometers of range in sunny locations like Las Vegas. This combination of lightweight design and solar power technology makes the Squad Mobility car a practical and efficient option for daily commuting and short trips within urban areas.Sustainability at the forefrontThe Squad Community also addresses the need for sustainable transportation solutions in densely populated areas. With increasing concerns about air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, electric and solar-powered vehicles offer a cleaner and greener alternative to traditional cars. By reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting renewable energy sources, the Squad Community contributes to a more environmentally friendly transportation system.By utilizing solar power technology and swappable batteries, the vehicle reduces its carbon footprint and reliance on fossil fuels. This eco-friendly approach aligns with the growing trend towards sustainable transportation options and addresses the environmental concerns associated with traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. As cities and communities continue to prioritize sustainability and reduce emissions, the Squad Community presents a viable solution for individuals looking to reduce their impact on the environment while still enjoying the convenience of personal transportation. Conclusion: An affordable option for small communitiesIn terms of market availability, Squad Mobility is currently accepting pre-orders for the Squad Community, with plans to begin production and assembly in the U.S. market within the next year. The company has received significant interest from communities in states like Florida, California, Nevada, and Arizona, where golf cart neighborhoods and gated communities are prevalent. This indicates a growing demand for sustainable and practical transportation options in residential areas. With a starting price of $6,500 for the base model without doors, the compact solar city car provides an accessible and eco-friendly alternative to traditional gas-powered vehicles.Overall, the Squad Community solution presented by Squad Mobility offers a promising solution to the challenges of urban mobility and environmental sustainability. By combining compact design, solar power technology, and affordability, the vehicle provides a practical and eco-friendly transportation option for individuals living in communities and neighborhoods. As the market for electric and solar-powered vehicles continues to grow, the Squad Community represents a step towards a more sustainable future in transportation.Interview by Scott Ertz of F5 Live: Refreshing Technology.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy.
